Psalm 93

The Majesty of the Lord

93 The Lord ·is king [reigns; 47:2; 96:10; 97:1; 98:6; 99:1; Rev. 19:6]. He is ·clothed [robed] in majesty.
    The Lord is ·clothed [robed] in majesty
    and ·armed [girded] with strength.
The world is ·set [established],
    and it ·cannot be moved [will not totter].
Lord, your ·kingdom [L throne] was ·set up [established] long ago;
    you are everlasting.

Lord, the ·seas [L rivers; C perhaps referring to currents within the sea] raise,
    the ·seas [L rivers] raise their voice.
    The ·seas [L rivers] raise up their pounding waves [C representing chaos].
The sound of the water is loud;
    the ·ocean waves [L breakers of the sea] are ·powerful [majestic],
but the Lord above is much ·greater [more powerful/majestic; C God is in control of chaos].

Lord, your ·laws [decrees; testimonies] ·will stand forever [are very faithful/true].
·Your Temple will be holy forevermore [L At your house holiness is fitting/appropriate and will be for length of days].

Psalm 96

Praise for the Lord’s Glory

96 Sing to the Lord a new song [C celebrating victory; 33:3; 40:3; 98:1; 144:9; 149:1; Is. 42:10; Rev. 5:9; 14:3];
sing to the Lord, all the earth.

Sing to the Lord and ·praise [bless] his name;
    every day ·tell [announce the good news] ·how he saves us [L of his salvation/victory].
Tell the nations of his glory [C his manifest presence];
    tell all peoples the ·miracles [wonderful acts] he does,

because the Lord is great; he should be praised ·at all times [or with vigor].
    He ·should be honored [is awesome; should be feared] more than all the gods,
because all the gods of the nations are ·only idols [or worthless],
    but the Lord made the heavens [Gen. 1].
The Lord has ·glory [splendor] and majesty;
    he has power and beauty in his ·Temple [sanctuary; L Holy Place].

·Praise [L Ascribe to] the Lord, all ·nations on earth [L families of peoples];
    ·praise the Lord’s [L ascribe to the Lord] glory and power.

    Bring an ·offering [grain/gift/tribute sacrifice; Lev. 2:1] and come into his Temple courtyards.
·Worship [Bow down to] the Lord ·because he is holy [L in the splendor of his holiness].
    Tremble before him, everyone on earth.

    The earth is ·set [established], and it cannot be moved.
    He will judge the people fairly.
11 Let the ·skies [heavens] rejoice and the earth be glad;
    let the sea and everything in it ·shout [thunder; roar].
12 Let the fields and everything in them rejoice.
Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy
13     before the Lord, because he is coming.
    He is coming to judge the world;
he will judge the world with ·fairness [righteousness]
    and the peoples with ·truth [faithfulness; 98:9].

Psalm 34

Praise God Who Judges and Saves

David’s song from the time he ·acted crazy [acted mad/insane; L changed his mind/discernment] so Abimelech [C perhaps another name for Achish] would ·send [drive] him away, and David did leave [1 Sam. 21:10–15].

34 I will ·praise [bless] the Lord at all times;
    his praise is always ·on my lips [L in my mouth].
My ·whole being [soul] praises the Lord.
    The ·poor [humble] will hear and be glad.
·Glorify [Praise; Magnify] the Lord with me,
    and let us ·praise [L extol] his name together.

I ·asked the Lord for help [sought the Lord], and he answered me.
    He ·saved [rescued; T delivered] me from all that I feared.
Those who ·go [L look] to him for help are ·happy [radiant],

    and he saves them.

You ·who belong to the Lord [holy ones], fear him [Prov. 1:7]!
    Those who fear him will ·have everything they need [not lack anything; 23:1].
10 Even lions [C the most noble wild beast] may get weak and hungry,

11 Children, come and listen to me.

    and he saves those whose spirits have been crushed.

19 People who ·do what is right may [are righteous] have many ·problems [afflictions],
    but the Lord ·will solve them [L saves them from them] all.
20 He will protect their very bones;
    not one of them will be broken.
21 Evil will kill the wicked;
    those who hate ·good [righteous] people will be judged guilty.
22 But the Lord ·saves [redeems; ransoms] his servants’ lives;

Numbers 6:22-27

The Priests’ Blessings

22 The Lord said to Moses, 23 “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you should bless the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel]. Say to them:

24 “May the Lord bless you and ·keep [guard] you.
25 May the Lord ·show you his kindness [L make his face shine upon you]
    and ·have mercy on [be gracious to] you.
26 May the Lord ·watch over [L lift his face/presence/countenance upon] you
    and give you peace.”’

27 “So Aaron and his sons will ·bless the Israelites with my name [L put my name upon the sons/T children of Israel], and I will bless them.”

Acts 13:1-12

Barnabas and Saul Are Chosen

13 In the church at Antioch there were these prophets and teachers: Barnabas [4:36], Simeon (also called Niger [C meaning “Black”; Luke 23:26]), Lucius (from the city of Cyrene [C a city in North Africa]), Manaen (who ·had grown up with Herod [or was a close friend of Herod; or was a member of Herod’s court], the ·ruler [L tetrarch; C a Roman political title; see Luke 3:1]), and Saul. They were all ·worshiping [or serving] the Lord and fasting [C giving up eating for spiritual purposes]. During this time the Holy Spirit said to them, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul to do ·a special [L the] work for which I have ·chosen [called] them.”

So after they fasted and prayed, they laid their hands on [C a ritual of blessing and/or conferring of authority] Barnabas and Saul and sent them out.

Barnabas and Saul in Cyprus

Barnabas and Saul, sent out by the Holy Spirit, went to the city of Seleucia [C a Syrian city 15 miles from Antioch]. From there they sailed to the island of Cyprus [C an island off the coast of Syria, and Barnabas’ homeland; 4:36]. When they came to Salamis [C the main city of Cyprus], they preached the ·Good News [Gospel; L word] of God in the synagogues [L of the Jews]. John Mark was ·with them to help [their assistant].

They went across the whole island to Paphos [C the capital city of Cyprus, on the southwest coast] where they met a ·magician [sorcerer] named Bar-Jesus [C meaning “son of Jesus/Joshua”]. He was a Jewish false prophet who ·always stayed close to [L was with; C perhaps an assistant or advisor] Sergius Paulus, the ·governor [proconsul] and a ·smart [intelligent; discerning] man. He asked Barnabas and Saul to come to him, because he wanted to hear the ·message [L word] of God. But Elymas, the magician (that is what his name means), was against them [C Elymas probably comes either from an Arabic word meaning “wise man” or an Aramaic word meaning “interpreter of dreams”—hence a “magician”]. He tried to ·stop [turn away] the ·governor [proconsul] from ·believing in Jesus [L the faith]. But Saul, who was also called Paul [C Saul was his Jewish name; Paul his Roman name (both probably given at birth)], was filled with the Holy Spirit. He looked ·straight [intently] at Elymas 10 and said, “You son of the devil! You are an enemy of ·everything that is right [all righteousness]! You are full of ·lies [deceit] and ·evil tricks [fraud; evil schemes], ·always trying to change the Lord’s truths into lies [L will you never stop making crooked/perverting the straight paths of the Lord?]. 11 Now [L look; T behold] the [L hand of the] Lord will touch you, and you will be blind. For a time you will not be able to see anything—not even the light from the sun.”

Then ·everything became dark for [L mist and darkness fell upon] Elymas, and he walked around, trying to find someone to lead him by the hand. 12 When the ·governor [proconsul] saw this, he believed because he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.

Luke 12:41-48

Who Is the Trusted Servant?

41 Peter said, “Lord, did you tell this ·story to [parable for] us or ·to [for] all people?”

42 The Lord said, “Who is the ·trusted [faithful] and ·wise [sensible] ·servant [household manager] that the ·master [lord] ·trusts [L puts in charge of the household servants] to give ·the other servants [L them] their ·food [food allowance; daily provisions] at the right time? 43 That ·servant [slave] will be ·blessed [happy; or rewarded] when the master comes and finds him doing his work. 44 I tell you the truth, the master will ·choose that servant to take care [put him in charge] of everything he owns. 45 But suppose the ·servant [slave] thinks to himself, ‘My master ·will not come back soon [is delayed in coming],’ and he begins to beat the other servants, men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. 46 The master [L of that servant/slave] will come [L on a day] when that servant is not ready and [L at an hour when he] is not expecting him. Then the master will cut him in pieces and ·send him away to be [assign/appoint him a place] with the ·others who don’t obey [unfaithful; unbelievers; C a metaphorical reference to Jesus, the ultimate Lord and Master, returning to judge his servants].

47 “The ·servant [slave] who knows what his master wants but is not ·ready [prepared], or who does not do what the master wants, will ·be beaten with many blows [beaten severely]! 48 But the servant who does not know what his master wants and does things that should be punished will be beaten ·with few blows [lightly; C a metaphor for judgment]. From everyone who has been given much, much will be ·demanded [required]. And from the one trusted with much, much more will be expected.
