Book of Common Prayer
I Will Praise Yahweh Throughout My Life
146 [a]Praise Yah!
(A)Praise Yahweh, O my soul!
2 I will praise Yahweh (B)throughout my life;
I will (C)sing praises to my God while I have my being.
3 (D)Do not trust in nobles,
In merely a son of (E)man, in whom there is (F)no salvation.
4 His (G)spirit departs, he (H)returns to [b]the earth;
In that very day his (I)plans perish.
5 How (J)blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
Whose (K)hope is in Yahweh his God,
6 Who (L)made heaven and earth,
The (M)sea and all that is in them;
Who (N)keeps truth forever;
7 Who (O)does justice for the oppressed;
Who (P)gives food to the hungry.
Yahweh (Q)sets the prisoners free.
8 Yahweh (R)opens the eyes of the blind;
Yahweh (S)raises up those who are bowed down;
Yahweh (T)loves the righteous;
9 Yahweh (U)keeps the sojourners;
He [c](V)helps up the orphan and the widow,
But He bends (W)the way of the wicked.
10 Yahweh will (X)reign forever,
Your God, O Zion, [d]from generation to generation.
[e]Praise Yah!
He Heals the Brokenhearted
147 [f]Praise Yah!
For (Y)it is good to sing praises to our God;
For [g]it is pleasant and praise is (Z)becoming.
2 Yahweh (AA)builds up Jerusalem;
He (AB)gathers the [h]outcasts of Israel.
3 He is the One who heals the (AC)brokenhearted
And who (AD)binds up their [i]wounds,
4 Who (AE)counts the number of the stars;
He [j](AF)gives names to all of them.
5 (AG)Great is our Lord and abundant in power;
His (AH)discernment is [k]infinite.
6 Yahweh [l](AI)helps up the afflicted;
He brings down the wicked to the ground.
7 (AJ)Sing to Yahweh with thanksgiving;
Sing praises to our God on the lyre.
8 He is the One who (AK)covers the heavens with clouds,
The One who (AL)provides rain for the earth,
The One who (AM)makes grass to sprout on the mountains,
9 Who (AN)gives to the animal its food,
And to the (AO)young ravens which call out.
10 He does not delight in the might of the (AP)horse;
He (AQ)does not take pleasure in the legs of a man.
11 Yahweh (AR)is pleased with those who fear Him,
(AS)Those who wait for His lovingkindness.
12 Laud Yahweh, O Jerusalem!
Praise your God, O Zion!
13 For He strengthened the (AT)bars of your gates;
He (AU)blessed your sons within you.
14 He is the One who (AV)sets [m]peace in your borders,
He (AW)satisfies you with (AX)the [n]finest of the wheat,
15 The One who sends forth His (AY)command to the earth;
His (AZ)word runs very swiftly,
16 The One who gives (BA)snow like wool;
He scatters the (BB)frost like ashes,
17 Who casts forth His (BC)ice as fragments;
Who can stand before His (BD)cold?
18 He (BE)sends forth His word and melts them;
He (BF)causes His wind to blow and so the waters flow,
19 Who (BG)declares His words to Jacob,
His (BH)statutes and His judgments to Israel.
20 He (BI)has not done so with any nation;
So as for His judgments, they have (BJ)not known them.
[o]Praise Yah!

Jeremiah’s Scroll Read in the Temple
36 Now it happened that in the (A)fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying, 2 “Take a (B)scroll of a book and write on it all the (C)words which I have spoken to you concerning (D)Israel and concerning Judah and concerning all the (E)nations, from the (F)day I first spoke to you, from the days of Josiah, even to this day. 3 (G)Perhaps the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I devise [a]to bring on them, in order that every man will (H)turn from his evil way; then I will (I)forgive their iniquity and their sin.”
4 Then Jeremiah called (J)Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote on a [b](K)scroll [c]at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of Yahweh which He had spoken to him. 5 And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, “I am [d](L)confined; I cannot go into the house of Yahweh. 6 So you shall go and (M)read from the scroll, which you have (N)written [e]at my dictation, the words of Yahweh [f]in the hearing of the people in the house of Yahweh on a (O)fast day. And also you shall read them in the hearing of all the people of Judah who come from their cities. 7 (P)Perhaps their supplication will [g]come before Yahweh, and everyone will turn from his evil way, for (Q)great is the anger and the wrath that Yahweh has spoken against this people.” 8 So Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, (R)reading from the book the words of Yahweh in the house of Yahweh.
9 Now it happened in the (S)fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the (T)ninth month, that all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who (U)came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem called for a (V)fast before Yahweh. 10 Then Baruch read from the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of Yahweh in the (W)chamber of (X)Gemariah the son of Shaphan the (Y)scribe, in the upper court, at the (Z)entry of the New Gate of the house of Yahweh, in the hearing of all the people.
In Lystra and Derbe
8 And at (A)Lystra (B)a man was sitting who had no strength in his feet, lame from his mother’s womb, who had never walked. 9 This man listened to Paul as he spoke, who, (C)when he fixed his gaze on him and saw that he had (D)faith to be [a]saved from being lame, 10 said with a loud voice, “Stand upright on your feet.” (E)And he leaped up and began to walk. 11 And when the crowds saw what Paul had done, they raised their voice, saying in the (F)Lycaonian language, “(G)The gods have become like men and have come down to us.” 12 And they began calling Barnabas, [b]Zeus, and Paul, [c]Hermes, because he was [d]the chief speaker. 13 And the priest of Zeus, whose temple was [e]just outside the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, and (H)was wanting to offer sacrifice with the crowds. 14 But when (I)the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they (J)tore their garments and rushed out into the crowd, crying out 15 and saying, “Men, why are you doing these things? We are also (K)men of the same nature as you, (L)proclaiming the gospel to you that you should turn from these [f](M)vain things to a (N)living God, (O)who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them. 16 [g]In the generations gone by He (P)permitted all the [h]nations to (Q)go their own ways; 17 and yet (R)He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good and (S)gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling your hearts with food and gladness.” 18 And saying these things, with difficulty they restrained the crowds from offering sacrifice to them.
36 Now one of the Pharisees was asking Him to eat with him, and He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 (A)And behold, there was a woman in the city who was a [a]sinner. And when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume. 38 And standing behind Him at His feet, crying, she began to wet His feet with her tears. And she kept wiping them with the hair of her head, and kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume. 39 Now when the Pharisee, who had invited Him, saw this, he said to himself, saying, “If this man were (B)a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a sinner.”
Parable of Two Debtors
40 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he [b]replied, “Say it, Teacher.” 41 “A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred [c](C)denarii, and the other fifty. 42 When they (D)were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he graciously forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have judged correctly.” 44 And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you (E)gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You (F)gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet. 46 (G)You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume. 47 For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48 Then He said to her, “(H)Your sins have been forgiven.” 49 And those who were reclining at the table with Him began to say [d]to themselves, “(I)Who is this man who even forgives sins?” 50 And He said to the woman, “(J)Your faith has saved you; (K)go in peace.”
