10 The thief comes only to steal and (A)kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 (B)I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd (C)lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is (D)a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and (E)leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and (F)scatters them. 13 He flees because (G)he is a hired hand and (H)cares nothing for the sheep. 14 (I)I am the good shepherd. (J)I know my own and (K)my own know me, 15 (L)just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and (M)I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And (N)I have other sheep that are not of this fold. (O)I must bring them also, and (P)they will listen to my voice. So there will be (Q)one flock, (R)one shepherd. 17 (S)For this reason the Father loves me, (T)because (U)I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 (V)No one takes it from me, but (W)I lay it down (X)of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and (Y)I have authority to take it up again. (Z)This charge I have received from my Father.”

19 (AA)There was again a division among the Jews because of these words. 20 Many of them said, (AB)“He has a demon, and (AC)is insane; why listen to him?” 21 Others said, “These are not the words of one who is oppressed by a demon. (AD)Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

I and the Father Are One

22 At that time the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was walking in the temple, (AE)in the colonnade of Solomon. 24 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are (AF)the Christ, (AG)tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. (AH)The works that I do (AI)in my Father's name bear witness about me, 26 but (AJ)you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. 27 (AK)My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 (AL)I give them eternal life, and (AM)they will never perish, and (AN)no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, (AO)who has given them to me,[a] (AP)is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of (AQ)the Father's hand. 30 (AR)I and the Father are one.”

31 (AS)The Jews picked up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?” 33 The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but (AT)for blasphemy, because you, being a man, (AU)make yourself God.” 34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in (AV)your Law, (AW)‘I said, you are gods’? 35 If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be (AX)broken— 36 do you say of him whom (AY)the Father consecrated and (AZ)sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because (BA)I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37 (BB)If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; 38 but if I do them, (BC)even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that (BD)the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” 39 (BE)Again they sought to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands.

40 He went away again across the Jordan to the place (BF)where John had been baptizing at first, and there he remained. 41 And many came to him. And they said, “John did no sign, but (BG)everything that John said about this man was true.” 42 And (BH)many believed in him there.

The Death of Lazarus

11 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of (BI)Mary and her sister Martha. (BJ)It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, (BK)he whom you love is ill.” But when Jesus heard it he said, (BL)“This illness does not lead to death. It is for (BM)the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

Now (BN)Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So, when he heard that Lazarus[b] was ill, (BO)he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. Then after this he said to the disciples, (BP)“Let us go to Judea again.” The disciples said to him, (BQ)“Rabbi, (BR)the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” Jesus answered, (BS)“Are there not twelve hours in the day? (BT)If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But (BU)if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not (BV)in him.” 11 After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus (BW)has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” 12 The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 (BX)So Thomas, called the Twin,[c] said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, (BY)that we may die with him.”

I Am the Resurrection and the Life

17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb (BZ)four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles[d] off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary (CA)to console them concerning their brother. 20 (CB)So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Martha said to (CC)Jesus, “Lord, (CD)if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, (CE)God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 (CF)Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in (CG)the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, (CH)“I am the resurrection and (CI)the life.[e] Whoever believes in me, (CJ)though he die, (CK)yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me (CL)shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; (CM)I believe that (CN)you are the Christ, the Son of God, (CO)who is coming into the world.”

Jesus Weeps

28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, (CP)“The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews (CQ)who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, (CR)“Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he (CS)was deeply moved[f] in his spirit and (CT)greatly troubled. 34 And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 (CU)Jesus wept. 36 So the Jews said, “See (CV)how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he (CW)who opened the eyes of the blind man (CX)also have kept this man from dying?”

Jesus Raises Lazarus

38 Then Jesus, (CY)deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was (CZ)a cave, and (DA)a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for (DB)he has been dead four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, (DC)“Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see (DD)the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus (DE)lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 (DF)I knew that you always hear me, but I said this (DG)on account of the people standing around, (DH)that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 (DI)The man who had died came out, (DJ)his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and (DK)his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45 (DL)Many of the Jews therefore, (DM)who had come with Mary and (DN)had seen what he did, believed in him, 46 but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees (DO)gathered (DP)the council and said, (DQ)“What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and (DR)the Romans will come and take away both our (DS)place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, (DT)Caiaphas, (DU)who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. 50 Nor do you understand that (DV)it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 He did not say this of his own accord, but (DW)being high priest that year (DX)he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and (DY)not for the nation only, but also (DZ)to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they (EA)made plans to put him to death.

54 Jesus therefore (EB)no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples.

55 Now (EC)the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and (ED)many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover (EE)to purify themselves. 56 (EF)They were looking for[g] Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

Mary Anoints Jesus at Bethany

12 Six days before (EG)the Passover, (EH)Jesus therefore came to Bethany, (EI)where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they gave a dinner for him there. (EJ)Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. (EK)Mary therefore took a pound[h] of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii[i] and (EL)given to the poor?” He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and (EM)having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it[j] for the day of my burial. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”

The Plot to Kill Lazarus

When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus[k] was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, (EN)whom he had raised from the dead. 10 (EO)So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, 11 because (EP)on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

The Triumphal Entry

12 The next day (EQ)the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of (ER)palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, (ES)“Hosanna! Blessed is (ET)he who comes in the name of the Lord, even (EU)the King of Israel!” 14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,

15 (EV)“Fear not, daughter of Zion;
behold, your king is coming,
    sitting on a donkey's colt!”

16 (EW)His disciples did not understand these things at first, but (EX)when Jesus was glorified, then (EY)they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. 17 (EZ)The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. 18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him (FA)was that they heard he had done this sign. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, (FB)“You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, (FC)the world has gone after him.”

Some Greeks Seek Jesus

20 Now (FD)among those who went up to worship at the feast were some (FE)Greeks. 21 So these came to (FF)Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told (FG)Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23 And Jesus answered them, (FH)“The hour has come (FI)for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, (FJ)unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 (FK)Whoever loves his life loses it, and (FL)whoever (FM)hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, he must (FN)follow me; and (FO)where I am, there will my servant be also. (FP)If anyone serves me, (FQ)the Father will honor him.

The Son of Man Must Be Lifted Up

27 (FR)“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, (FS)save me from (FT)this hour’? But (FU)for this purpose I have come to (FV)this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” Then (FW)a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, (FX)“An angel has spoken to him.” 30 Jesus answered, (FY)“This voice has come for your sake, not mine. 31 (FZ)Now is the judgment of this world; now will (GA)the ruler of this world (GB)be cast out. 32 And I, (GC)when I am lifted up from the earth, (GD)will draw (GE)all people to myself.” 33 He said this (GF)to show by what kind of death he was going to die. 34 So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that (GG)the Christ remains forever. How can you say that (GH)the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” 35 So Jesus said to them, (GI)“The light is among you (GJ)for a little while longer. (GK)Walk while you have the light, lest darkness (GL)overtake you. (GM)The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become (GN)sons of light.”

The Unbelief of the People

When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. 37 Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, 38 (GO)so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

(GP)“Lord, who has believed what he heard from us,
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

39 Therefore they (GQ)could not believe. For again Isaiah said,

40 (GR)“He has blinded their eyes
    and (GS)hardened their heart,
lest they see with their eyes,
and understand with their heart, and turn,
    and I would heal them.”

41 Isaiah said these things because (GT)he saw his glory and (GU)spoke of him. 42 Nevertheless, (GV)many even of the authorities believed in him, but (GW)for fear of the Pharisees they did not (GX)confess it, so that they would not be (GY)put out of the synagogue; 43 (GZ)for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

Jesus Came to Save the World

44 And Jesus cried out and said, (HA)“Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but (HB)in him who sent me. 45 And (HC)whoever (HD)sees me sees him who sent me. 46 (HE)I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone (HF)hears my words and does not keep them, (HG)I do not judge him; for (HH)I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 (HI)The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; (HJ)the word that I have spoken will judge him (HK)on the last day. 49 For (HL)I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father (HM)who sent me has himself given me (HN)a commandment—what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”

Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet

13 Now (HO)before (HP)the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that (HQ)his hour had come (HR)to depart out of this world to the Father, (HS)having loved (HT)his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. During supper, when (HU)the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, Jesus, knowing (HV)that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that (HW)he had come from God and (HX)was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, (HY)tied it around his waist. Then he (HZ)poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” (IA)Jesus answered him, “What I am doing (IB)you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” (IC)Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, (ID)“If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, (IE)except for his feet,[l] but is completely clean. And (IF)you[m] are clean, (IG)but not every one of you.” 11 (IH)For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12 When he had washed their feet and (II)put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, (IJ)“Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 (IK)You call me (IL)Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, (IM)you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, (IN)that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, (IO)a servant[n] is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, (IP)blessed are you if you do them. 18 (IQ)I am not speaking of all of you; I know (IR)whom I have chosen. But (IS)the Scripture will be fulfilled,[o] (IT)‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19 (IU)I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, (IV)whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”

One of You Will Betray Me

21 After saying these things, (IW)Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, (IX)“Truly, truly, I say to you, (IY)one of you will betray me.” 22 (IZ)The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 (JA)One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table (JB)at Jesus' side,[p] 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus[q] of whom he was speaking. 25 (JC)So that disciple, (JD)leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, (JE)“It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread (JF)when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, (JG)he gave it to Judas, (JH)the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after he had taken the morsel, (JI)Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, (JJ)“What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, (JK)because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need (JL)for the feast,” or that he should (JM)give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. (JN)And it was night.

A New Commandment

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, (JO)“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and (JP)God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, (JQ)God will also glorify him in himself, and (JR)glorify him at once. 33 Little children, (JS)yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just (JT)as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 (JU)A new commandment (JV)I give to you, (JW)that you love one another: (JX)just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 (JY)By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” (JZ)Jesus answered him, “Where I am going (KA)you cannot follow me now, (KB)but you will follow afterward.” 37 (KC)Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, (KD)the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

14 (KE)“Let not your hearts be troubled. (KF)Believe in God;[r] believe also in me. In (KG)my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that (KH)I go to prepare a place for you?[s] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you (KI)to myself, that (KJ)where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”[t] (KK)Thomas said to him, “Lord, (KL)we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am (KM)the way, and (KN)the truth, and (KO)the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (KP)If you had known me, you would have (KQ)known my Father also.[u] From now on you do know him and (KR)have seen him.”

(KS)Philip said to him, “Lord, (KT)show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? (KU)Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that (KV)I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you (KW)I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that (KX)I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else (KY)believe on account of the works themselves.

12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, (KZ)whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I (LA)am going to the Father. 13 (LB)Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that (LC)the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 (LD)If you ask me[v] anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 (LE)“If you love me, you will (LF)keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another (LG)Helper,[w] to be with you forever, 17 even (LH)the Spirit of truth, (LI)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and (LJ)will be[x] in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; (LK)I will come to you. 19 (LL)Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but (LM)you will see me. (LN)Because I live, you also will live. 20 (LO)In that day you will know that (LP)I am in my Father, and (LQ)you in me, and (LR)I in you. 21 (LS)Whoever has my commandments and (LT)keeps them, he it is who loves me. And (LU)he who loves me (LV)will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and (LW)manifest myself to him.” 22 (LX)Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it (LY)that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, (LZ)“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and (MA)we will come to him and (MB)make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And (MC)the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the (MD)Helper, the Holy Spirit, (ME)whom the Father will send in my name, (MF)he will teach you all things and (MG)bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 (MH)Peace I leave with you; (MI)my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. (MJ)Let not your hearts be troubled, neither (MK)let them be afraid. 28 (ML)You heard me say to you, (MM)‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I (MN)am going to the Father, for (MO)the Father is greater than I. 29 And (MP)now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for (MQ)the ruler of this world is coming. (MR)He has no claim on me, 31 but I do (MS)as the Father has commanded me, (MT)so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

I Am the True Vine

15 “I am the (MU)true vine, and my Father is (MV)the vinedresser. (MW)Every branch in me that does not bear fruit (MX)he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, (MY)that it may bear more fruit. Already (MZ)you are clean (NA)because of the word that I have spoken to you. (NB)Abide (NC)in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; (ND)you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that (NE)bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me (NF)he is thrown away like a branch and withers; (NG)and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If (NH)you abide in me, and my words abide in you, (NI)ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. (NJ)By this my Father is glorified, that you (NK)bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. (NL)As the Father has loved me, (NM)so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 (NN)If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as (NO)I have kept (NP)my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, (NQ)that my joy may be in you, and that (NR)your joy may be full.

12 (NS)“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 (NT)Greater love has no one than this, (NU)that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are (NV)my friends (NW)if you do what I command you. 15 (NX)No longer do I call you servants,[y] for the servant (NY)does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for (NZ)all that I have heard from my Father (OA)I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but (OB)I chose you and appointed you that you should go and (OC)bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that (OD)whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, (OE)so that you will love one another.

The Hatred of the World

18 (OF)“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 (OG)If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because (OH)you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: (OI)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, (OJ)they will also persecute you. (OK)If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But (OL)all these things they will do to you (OM)on account of my name, (ON)because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, (OO)they would not have been guilty of sin,[z] but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 (OP)Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 (OQ)If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, (OR)they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have (OS)seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But (OT)the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: (OU)‘They hated me without a cause.’

26 “But (OV)when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, (OW)he will bear witness about me. 27 And (OX)you also will bear witness, (OY)because you have been with me (OZ)from the beginning.

16 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. (PA)They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, (PB)the hour is coming when (PC)whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. And they will do these things (PD)because they have not known the Father, nor me. But (PE)I have said these things to you, that when (PF)their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, (PG)because I was with you. But now (PH)I am going to him who sent me, and (PI)none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, (PJ)sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for (PK)if I do not go away, (PL)the Helper will not come to you. But (PM)if (PN)I go, (PO)I will send him to you. (PP)And when he comes, he will (PQ)convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, (PR)because they do not believe in me; 10 (PS)concerning righteousness, (PT)because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 (PU)concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world (PV)is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When (PW)the Spirit of truth comes, (PX)he will (PY)guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but (PZ)whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will (QA)glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life,(A) and have it to the full.(B)

11 “I am(C) the good shepherd.(D) The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.(E) 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away.(F) Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

14 “I am the good shepherd;(G) I know my sheep(H) and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father(I)—and I lay down my life for the sheep.(J) 16 I have other sheep(K) that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock(L) and one shepherd.(M) 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life(N)—only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.(O) I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”(P)

19 The Jews who heard these words were again divided.(Q) 20 Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed(R) and raving mad.(S) Why listen to him?”

21 But others said, “These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon.(T) Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”(U)

Further Conflict Over Jesus’ Claims

22 Then came the Festival of Dedication[a] at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade.(V) 24 The Jews(W) who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”(X)

25 Jesus answered, “I did tell you,(Y) but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me,(Z) 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.(AA) 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them,(AB) and they follow me.(AC) 28 I give them eternal life,(AD) and they shall never perish;(AE) no one will snatch them out of my hand.(AF) 29 My Father, who has given them to me,(AG) is greater than all[b];(AH) no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”(AI)

31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him,(AJ) 32 but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”

33 “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”(AK)

34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law,(AL) ‘I have said you are “gods”’[c]?(AM) 35 If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God(AN) came—and Scripture cannot be set aside(AO) 36 what about the one whom the Father set apart(AP) as his very own(AQ) and sent into the world?(AR) Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?(AS) 37 Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father.(AT) 38 But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”(AU) 39 Again they tried to seize him,(AV) but he escaped their grasp.(AW)

40 Then Jesus went back across the Jordan(AX) to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. There he stayed, 41 and many people came to him. They said, “Though John never performed a sign,(AY) all that John said about this man was true.”(AZ) 42 And in that place many believed in Jesus.(BA)

The Death of Lazarus

11 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany,(BB) the village of Mary and her sister Martha.(BC) (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)(BD) So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love(BE) is sick.”

When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory(BF) so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”(BG)

“But Rabbi,”(BH) they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you,(BI) and yet you are going back?”

Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.(BJ) 10 It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”

11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend(BK) Lazarus has fallen asleep;(BL) but I am going there to wake him up.”

12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.(BM)

14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”

16 Then Thomas(BN) (also known as Didymus[d]) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus

17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.(BO) 18 Now Bethany(BP) was less than two miles[e] from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.(BQ) 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.(BR)

21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.(BS) 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”(BT)

23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection(BU) at the last day.”(BV)

25 Jesus said to her, “I am(BW) the resurrection and the life.(BX) The one who believes(BY) in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing(BZ) in me will never die.(CA) Do you believe this?”

27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah,(CB) the Son of God,(CC) who is to come into the world.”(CD)

28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher(CE) is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.(CF) 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her,(CG) noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.

32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”(CH)

33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved(CI) in spirit and troubled.(CJ) 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked.

“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.

35 Jesus wept.(CK)

36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”(CL)

37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man(CM) have kept this man from dying?”(CN)

Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead

38 Jesus, once more deeply moved,(CO) came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.(CP) 39 “Take away the stone,” he said.

“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”(CQ)

40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe,(CR) you will see the glory of God?”(CS)

41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up(CT) and said, “Father,(CU) I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here,(CV) that they may believe that you sent me.”(CW)

43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”(CX) 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,(CY) and a cloth around his face.(CZ)

Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary,(DA) and had seen what Jesus did,(DB) believed in him.(DC) 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees(DD) called a meeting(DE) of the Sanhedrin.(DF)

“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.(DG) 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”

49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas,(DH) who was high priest that year,(DI) spoke up, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”(DJ)

51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.(DK) 53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.(DL)

54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea.(DM) Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.

55 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(DN) many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing(DO) before the Passover. 56 They kept looking for Jesus,(DP) and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?” 57 But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.

Jesus Anointed at Bethany(DQ)

12 Six days before the Passover,(DR) Jesus came to Bethany,(DS) where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served,(DT) while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. Then Mary took about a pint[f] of pure nard, an expensive perfume;(DU) she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair.(DV) And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him,(DW) objected, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.[g] He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag,(DX) he used to help himself to what was put into it.

“Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.(DY) You will always have the poor among you,[h](DZ) but you will not always have me.”

Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.(EA) 10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, 11 for on account of him(EB) many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.(EC)

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(ED)

12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches(EE) and went out to meet him, shouting,

“Hosanna![i]

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”[j](EF)

“Blessed is the king of Israel!”(EG)

14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:

15 “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion;
    see, your king is coming,
    seated on a donkey’s colt.”[k](EH)

16 At first his disciples did not understand all this.(EI) Only after Jesus was glorified(EJ) did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.

17 Now the crowd that was with him(EK) when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18 Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign,(EL) went out to meet him. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”(EM)

Jesus Predicts His Death

20 Now there were some Greeks(EN) among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida(EO) in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.

23 Jesus replied, “The hour(EP) has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.(EQ) 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies,(ER) it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it(ES) for eternal life.(ET) 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be.(EU) My Father will honor the one who serves me.

27 “Now my soul is troubled,(EV) and what shall I say? ‘Father,(EW) save me from this hour’?(EX) No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!”

Then a voice came from heaven,(EY) “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.

30 Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit,(EZ) not mine. 31 Now is the time for judgment on this world;(FA) now the prince of this world(FB) will be driven out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up[l] from the earth,(FC) will draw all people to myself.”(FD) 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.(FE)

34 The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law(FF) that the Messiah will remain forever,(FG) so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man(FH) must be lifted up’?(FI) Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”

35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light(FJ) just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light,(FK) before darkness overtakes you.(FL) Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. 36 Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.”(FM) When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.(FN)

Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews

37 Even after Jesus had performed so many signs(FO) in their presence, they still would not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:

“Lord, who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”[m](FP)

39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:

40 “He has blinded their eyes
    and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
    nor understand with their hearts,
    nor turn—and I would heal them.”[n](FQ)

41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory(FR) and spoke about him.(FS)

42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him.(FT) But because of the Pharisees(FU) they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;(FV) 43 for they loved human praise(FW) more than praise from God.(FX)

44 Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.(FY) 45 The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.(FZ) 46 I have come into the world as a light,(GA) so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

47 “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.(GB) 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them(GC) at the last day. 49 For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me(GD) to say all that I have spoken. 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life.(GE) So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”(GF)

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

13 It was just before the Passover Festival.(GG) Jesus knew that the hour had come(GH) for him to leave this world and go to the Father.(GI) Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.(GJ) Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power,(GK) and that he had come from God(GL) and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.(GM) After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet,(GN) drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”(GO)

“No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

“Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”

10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean,(GP) though not every one of you.”(GQ) 11 For he knew who was going to betray him,(GR) and that was why he said not every one was clean.

12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’(GS) and ‘Lord,’(GT) and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.(GU) 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.(GV) 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master,(GW) nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.(GX)

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

18 “I am not referring to all of you;(GY) I know those I have chosen.(GZ) But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture:(HA) ‘He who shared my bread(HB) has turned[o](HC) against me.’[p](HD)

19 “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe(HE) that I am who I am.(HF) 20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”(HG)

21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit(HH) and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”(HI)

22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved,(HJ) was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”

25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”(HK)

26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas,(HL) the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.(HM)

So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money,(HN) some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival,(HO) or to give something to the poor.(HP) 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.(HQ)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(HR)

31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man(HS) is glorified(HT) and God is glorified in him.(HU) 32 If God is glorified in him,[q] God will glorify the Son in himself,(HV) and will glorify him at once.

33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.(HW)

34 “A new command(HX) I give you: Love one another.(HY) As I have loved you, so you must love one another.(HZ) 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”(IA)

36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”(IB)

Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now,(IC) but you will follow later.”(ID)

37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!(IE)

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled.(IF) You believe(IG) in God[r];(IH) believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there(II) to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back(IJ) and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.(IK) You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus the Way to the Father

Thomas(IL) said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am(IM) the way(IN) and the truth(IO) and the life.(IP) No one comes to the Father except through me.(IQ) If you really know me, you will know[s] my Father as well.(IR) From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Philip(IS) said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.(IT) How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?(IU) The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority.(IV) Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.(IW) 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes(IX) in me will do the works I have been doing,(IY) and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask(IZ) in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, keep my commands.(JA) 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate(JB) to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth.(JC) The world cannot accept him,(JD) because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[t] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans;(JE) I will come to you.(JF) 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.(JG) Because I live, you also will live.(JH) 20 On that day(JI) you will realize that I am in my Father,(JJ) and you are in me, and I am in you.(JK) 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.(JL) The one who loves me will be loved by my Father,(JM) and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

22 Then Judas(JN) (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”(JO)

23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.(JP) My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.(JQ) 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.(JR)

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate,(JS) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,(JT) will teach you all things(JU) and will remind you of everything I have said to you.(JV) 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.(JW) I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled(JX) and do not be afraid.

28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’(JY) If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father,(JZ) for the Father is greater than I.(KA) 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.(KB) 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world(KC) is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.(KD)

“Come now; let us leave.

The Vine and the Branches

15 “I am(KE) the true vine,(KF) and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,(KG) while every branch that does bear fruit(KH) he prunes[u] so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.(KI) Remain in me, as I also remain in you.(KJ) No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;(KK) apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.(KL) If you remain in me(KM) and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.(KN) This is to my Father’s glory,(KO) that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.(KP)

“As the Father has loved me,(KQ) so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands,(KR) you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.(KS) 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.(KT) 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.(KU) 14 You are my friends(KV) if you do what I command.(KW) 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.(KX) 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you(KY) so that you might go and bear fruit(KZ)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.(LA) 17 This is my command: Love each other.(LB)

The World Hates the Disciples

18 “If the world hates you,(LC) keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you(LD) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.(LE) 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[v](LF) If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.(LG) If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name,(LH) for they do not know the one who sent me.(LI) 22 If I had not come and spoken to them,(LJ) they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.(LK) 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did,(LL) they would not be guilty of sin.(LM) As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:(LN) ‘They hated me without reason.’[w](LO)

The Work of the Holy Spirit

26 “When the Advocate(LP) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father(LQ)—the Spirit of truth(LR) who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.(LS) 27 And you also must testify,(LT) for you have been with me from the beginning.(LU)

16 “All this(LV) I have told you so that you will not fall away.(LW) They will put you out of the synagogue;(LX) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(LY) They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(LZ) I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(MA) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(MB) but now I am going to him who sent me.(MC) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(MD) Rather, you are filled with grief(ME) because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(MF) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(MG) When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin,(MH) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(MI) because I am going to the Father,(MJ) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(MK) now stands condemned.

12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(ML) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(MM) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(MN) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.
