An Oracle Concerning Babylon
13 The [a](A)oracle concerning (B)Babylon which (C)Isaiah the son of Amoz beheld.
2 (D)Lift up a standard on the [b](E)bare hill,
Heighten your voice at them,
(F)Wave the hand that they may (G)enter the doors of the nobles.
3 I have commanded My set apart ones,
I have even called My (H)mighty warriors,
My [c]proudly exulting ones,
To execute My anger.
4 A (I)sound of tumult on the mountains,
Like that of many people!
A sound of the rumbling of kingdoms,
Of nations gathered together!
Yahweh of hosts is mustering the host for battle.
5 They are coming from a far country,
From the (J)end of the sky,
Yahweh and His instruments of (K)indignation,
To (L)wreak destruction on the whole land.
6 Wail, for the (M)day of Yahweh is near!
It will come as (N)destruction from [d]the Almighty.
7 Therefore (O)all hands will fall limp,
And every man’s (P)heart will melt.
8 They will be (Q)terrified,
Pains and labor pangs will take hold of them;
They will (R)writhe like a woman in labor,
They will look at one another in astonishment,
Their faces aflame.
9 Behold, (S)the day of Yahweh is coming,
Cruel, with fury and burning anger,
To make the land a desolation;
And He will exterminate its sinners from it.
10 For the (T)stars of heaven and their constellations
Will not flash forth their light;
The (U)sun will be dark when it rises
And the moon will not shed its light.
11 Thus I will (V)punish the world for its evil
And the (W)wicked for their iniquity;
I will also put an end to the (X)pride of the arrogant
And bring low the (Y)lofty pride of the [e](Z)ruthless.
12 I will make mortal man [f](AA)scarcer than fine gold
And mankind than the (AB)gold of Ophir.
13 Therefore I will make the (AC)heavens tremble,
And (AD)the earth will be shaken from its place
At the fury of Yahweh of hosts
In (AE)the day of His burning anger.
14 And it will be that like a hunted gazelle,
Or like (AF)sheep with none to gather them,
They will each turn to his own people,
And each one flee to his own land.
15 Anyone who is found will be (AG)pierced through,
And anyone who is captured will fall by the sword.
16 Their (AH)infants also will be dashed to pieces
Before their eyes;
Their houses will be plundered
And their wives ravished.
17 Behold, I am going to (AI)awaken the Medes against them,
Who will not think about silver or (AJ)take pleasure in gold.
18 And their bows will dash the (AK)young men to pieces,
They will not even have compassion on the fruit of the womb,
Nor will their (AL)eye pity [g]children.
19 And it will be that (AM)Babylon, the (AN)beauty of kingdoms, the [h]honor of the Chaldeans’ pride,
Will be as when God (AO)overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
20 It will (AP)never be inhabited or dwelt in from generation to generation;
Nor will the [i](AQ)Arab pitch his tent there,
Nor will shepherds make their flocks lie down there.
21 But (AR)desert creatures will lie down there,
And their houses will be full of [j]owls;
Ostriches also will dwell there, and [k]shaggy goats will leap there.
22 [l]And hyenas will howl in their fortified towers
And jackals in their luxurious (AS)palaces.
Her fateful time also [m]will soon come
And her days will not be prolonged.

Lament for Babylon
47 “(A)Come down and sit in the dust,
O (B)virgin (C)daughter of Babylon;
Sit on the ground without a throne,
O daughter of the Chaldeans!
For you shall no longer be called (D)tender and delicate.
2 Take the (E)millstones and (F)grind flour.
Uncover your (G)veil, (H)strip off the skirt,
Uncover the leg, cross the rivers.
3 Your (I)nakedness will be uncovered;
Your reproach also will be seen;
I will (J)take vengeance and will not [a]spare a man.”
4 Our (K)Redeemer, Yahweh of hosts is His name,
The Holy One of Israel.
5 “(L)Sit silently, and go into (M)darkness,
O daughter of the Chaldeans,
For you will no longer be called
The (N)queen of (O)kingdoms.
6 I was furious with My people;
I profaned My inheritance
And gave them into your hand.
You did not show compassion to them,
On the (P)aged you made your yoke very heavy.
7 Yet you said, ‘I will be a (Q)queen forever.’
These things you did not (R)put on your heart
Nor remember the (S)outcome of [b]them.
8 “So now, hear this, you (T)sensual one,
Who (U)sits securely,
Who says in [c]your heart,
‘(V)I am, and there is no one besides me.
I will (W)not sit as a widow,
Nor know loss of children.’
9 But these (X)two things will come on you (Y)suddenly in one day:
Loss of children and widowhood.
They will come on you in full measure
In spite of your many (Z)sorceries,
In spite of the great might of your spells.
10 You felt (AA)secure in your evil and said,
‘(AB)No one sees me,’
Your (AC)wisdom and your knowledge [d]have turned you astray;
So you have said in your heart,
‘(AD)I am, and there is no one besides me.’
11 But (AE)evil will come on you
Which you will not know how to charm away;
And disaster will fall on you
For which you cannot atone;
And (AF)destruction about which you do not know
Will come on you (AG)suddenly.
12 “Stand fast now in your (AH)spells
And in your many sorceries
With which you have labored from your youth;
Perhaps you will be able to profit;
Perhaps you may cause trembling.
13 You are (AI)wearied with your many counsels;
Let now the (AJ)astrologers,
Those who behold visions by the stars,
Those who predict by the new moons,
Stand up and (AK)save you from what will come upon you.
14 Behold, they have become (AL)like stubble,
(AM)Fire burns them;
They cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame;
There will be (AN)no coal to warm by
Nor a fire to sit before!
15 Thus they have become for you, those among whom you have labored,
Who have (AO)traded with you from your youth;
Each has wandered in his own [e]way;
There is (AP)none to save you.

12 ‘Then it will be (A)when seventy years are fulfilled, that I will (B)punish the king of Babylon and that nation,’ declares Yahweh, ‘for their iniquity, even the land of the Chaldeans; and (C)I will make it an everlasting desolation.

Word Against Babylon
50 The word which Yahweh spoke concerning (A)Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, by the hand of Jeremiah the prophet:
2 “(B)Declare and make it heard among the nations.
Make it heard and (C)lift up a standard.
Do not conceal it but say,
‘(D)Babylon has been captured;
(E)Bel has been put to shame; [a]Marduk has been [b]shattered;
Her (F)images have been put to shame; her idols have been shattered.’
3 For a nation has come up against her out of the (G)north; it will make her land (H)an object of horror, and there will be (I)no inhabitant in it. Both man and beast have wandered off; they have gone away!
4 “In those days and at that time,” declares Yahweh, “the sons of Israel will come, both they and the sons of Judah (J)as well; they will go along (K)weeping as they go, and it will be (L)Yahweh their God they will seek. 5 They will (M)ask for the way to Zion—turning their faces [c]in its direction and saying, ‘[d]Come!’—in order that they may join themselves to Yahweh in an (N)everlasting covenant that will not be forgotten.
6 “My people have become (O)lost sheep;
(P)Their shepherds have led them astray.
They have made them turn away on the (Q)mountains;
They have gone along from mountain to hill
And have forgotten their (R)resting place.
7 All who came out against them have devoured them;
And their adversaries have said, ‘(S)We are not guilty,
Inasmuch as they have sinned against Yahweh, who is the (T)abode of righteousness,
Even Yahweh, the (U)hope of their fathers.’
8 “Wander away from the (V)midst of Babylon
And [e]go forth from the land of the Chaldeans;
Be also like male goats [f]at the head of the flock.
9 For behold, I am going to (W)arouse and bring up against Babylon
An assembly of great nations from the land of the north,
And they will arrange their battle lines against her;
From there she will be taken captive.
Their arrows will be like [g]a warrior who makes one childless
Who does not return empty-handed.
10 [h](X)Chaldea will become spoil;
All who take her spoil will have enough,” declares Yahweh.
11 “Because you are glad, because you exult,
O you who (Y)plunder My inheritance,
Because you skip about [i]like a threshing (Z)heifer
And neigh like [j]valiant steeds,
12 Your (AA)mother [k]will be greatly ashamed;
She who gave you birth [l]will be humiliated.
Behold, she will be the least of the nations,
A (AB)wilderness, a parched land, and a desert.
13 Because of the wrath of Yahweh she will (AC)not be inhabited,
But she will be (AD)completely desolate;
Everyone who passes by Babylon (AE)will be in desolation
And will hiss because of all her wounds.
14 Arrange your battle lines against Babylon on every side,
All you who [m]bend the bow;
Shoot at her, do not be sparing with your arrows,
For she has (AF)sinned against Yahweh.
15 Raise a loud shout against her on every side!
She has (AG)given [n]herself up, her pillars have fallen,
Her (AH)walls have been pulled down.
For this is the (AI)vengeance of Yahweh:
Take vengeance on her;
(AJ)As she has done to others, so do to her.
16 Cut off the (AK)sower from Babylon
And the one who seizes the sickle at the time of harvest;
From before [o]the (AL)sword of the oppressor
(AM)They will each turn back to his own people,
And they will each flee to his own land.
17 “Israel is a (AN)scattered [p]flock; the (AO)lions have banished them away. The first one who devoured him was the (AP)king of Assyria, and this last one who has broken his bones is (AQ)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. 18 Therefore thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I am going to punish the king of Babylon and his land, just as I (AR)punished the king of Assyria. 19 And I will [q](AS)return Israel back to his pasture, and he will graze on Carmel and Bashan, and his [r]desire will be satisfied in the (AT)hill country of Ephraim and Gilead. 20 In those days and at that time,’ declares Yahweh, ‘search will be made for the iniquity of Israel, but (AU)there will be none; and for the sins of Judah, but they will not be found; for I will pardon those (AV)whom I leave as a remnant.’
21 “Against the land of [s]Merathaim, go up against it,
And against the inhabitants of [t](AW)Pekod.
Put them to the sword and [u]devote them to destruction,” declares Yahweh,
“And do according to all that I have commanded you.
22 The (AX)noise of battle is in the land,
And great destruction.
23 How the (AY)hammer of the whole earth
Has been cut in pieces and broken!
How Babylon has become
An object of horror among the nations!
24 I (AZ)set a snare for you, and you were also (BA)caught, O Babylon,
But you yourself did not know;
You have been found and also seized
Because you have engaged in (BB)conflict with Yahweh.”
25 Yahweh has opened His armory
And has brought forth the (BC)weapons of His indignation,
For it is a (BD)work of Lord Yahweh of hosts
In the land of the Chaldeans.
26 Come to her from the [v]farthest border;
(BE)Open up her barns;
Pile her up like heaps,
And [w](BF)devote her to destruction;
Let nothing of her remain.
27 (BG)Put all her young bulls to the sword;
Let them (BH)go down to the slaughter!
Woe be upon them, for their (BI)day has come,
The time of their punishment.
28 There is a (BJ)sound of those who flee and escape from the land of Babylon,
To declare in Zion the (BK)vengeance of Yahweh our God,
Vengeance for His (BL)temple.
29 “Summon [x]many against Babylon,
All those who [y]bend the bow:
Encamp against her on every side,
Let there be no escape[z].
Repay her according to her work;
(BM)According to all that she has done, so do to her;
For she has become (BN)arrogant against Yahweh,
Against the Holy One of Israel.
30 Therefore her (BO)young men will fall in her open squares,
And all her men of war will be [aa](BP)silenced in that day,” declares Yahweh.
31 “Behold, (BQ)I am against you, O [ab]arrogant one,”
Declares Lord Yahweh of hosts,
“For your day has come,
The time [ac]when I will punish you.
32 The [ad](BR)arrogant one will stumble and fall
With no one to raise him up;
And I will (BS)set fire to his cities,
And it will devour him on every side.”
33 Thus says Yahweh of hosts,
“The sons of Israel are oppressed,
And the sons of Judah as well;
And (BT)all who took them captive have held them fast;
They have refused to let them go.
34 Their (BU)Redeemer is strong, (BV)Yahweh of hosts is His name;
He will vigorously (BW)plead their case
So that He may (BX)bring relief to [ae]the earth,
But turmoil to the inhabitants of Babylon.
35 A (BY)sword against the Chaldeans,” declares Yahweh,
“And against the inhabitants of Babylon
And against her (BZ)officials and her (CA)wise men!
36 A sword against the (CB)oracle priests, and they will become fools!
A sword against her (CC)mighty men, and they will be [af](CD)shattered!
37 A sword against [ag]their (CE)horses and against [ah]their chariots
And against all the [ai](CF)foreigners who are in the midst of her,
And they will become (CG)women!
A sword against her treasures, and they will be plundered!
38 A [aj](CH)drought on her waters, and they will be dried up!
For it is a land of (CI)graven images,
And they are mad over terrifying idols.
39 “Therefore the (CJ)desert creatures will live there along with the jackals;
The ostriches also will live in it,
And it will (CK)never again be lived in
Or dwelt in from generation to generation.
40 As when God overthrew (CL)Sodom
And Gomorrah with its neighbors,” declares Yahweh,
“No man will live there,
Nor will any son of man sojourn in it.
41 “Behold, a people is coming (CM)from the north,
And a great nation and many kings
Will be aroused from the remote parts of the earth.
42 They (CN)seize their bow and [ak]javelin;
They are (CO)cruel and have no compassion.
Their (CP)voice roars like the sea;
And they ride on (CQ)horses,
(CR)Arranged like a man for the battle
Against you, O daughter of Babylon.
43 The (CS)king of Babylon has heard the report about them,
And his hands hang limp;
(CT)Distress has taken hold of him,
Agony like a woman in childbirth.
44 “(CU)Behold, one will come up like a lion from the [al]thicket of the Jordan to an enduring pasture; for in an instant I will make them run away from it, and whoever is (CV)chosen I will appoint over it. For who is (CW)like Me, and who will [am]summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd who can (CX)stand before Me?” 45 Therefore hear the (CY)counsel of Yahweh which He has counseled against Babylon, and His purposes which He has purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: (CZ)surely they will drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; surely He will make their [an]pasture desolate because of them. 46 At the sound, “Babylon has been seized!” the (DA)earth is shaken, and an (DB)outcry is heard among the nations.
Yahweh Sends Calamity to Babylon
51 Thus says Yahweh:
“Behold, I am going to arouse against Babylon
And against the inhabitants of [ao]Leb-kamai
[ap]The (DC)spirit of a destroyer.
2 I will send [aq]strangers to Babylon that they may (DD)winnow her
And may empty her land to destruction;
For on every side they will be against her
In the day of her calamity.
3 [ar]Let not [as]him who [at](DE)bends his bow [au]bend it,
[av]Nor let him rise up in his (DF)scale-armor;
So do not spare her young men;
Devote all her army to destruction.
4 They will fall down [aw]slain in the land of the Chaldeans,
And (DG)pierced through in their streets.”
5 For (DH)neither Israel nor Judah has been widowed
By his God, by Yahweh of hosts,
Although their land is (DI)full of guilt
[ax]Before the Holy One of Israel.
6 (DJ)Flee from the midst of Babylon,
And each of you escape with his life!
Do not be [ay](DK)silenced in her [az]iniquity,
For this is (DL)Yahweh’s time of vengeance;
He is going to (DM)render recompense to her.
7 Babylon has been a golden (DN)cup in the hand of Yahweh,
Intoxicating all the earth.
The (DO)nations have drunk of her wine;
Therefore the nations are (DP)going mad.
8 Suddenly (DQ)Babylon has fallen and been broken;
(DR)Wail over her!
(DS)Take [ba]balm for her pain;
Perhaps she may be healed.
9 We applied healing to Babylon, but she was not healed;
Forsake her and (DT)let us each go to his own country,
For her judgment has (DU)touched heaven
And lifts up to the very skies.
10 Yahweh has (DV)brought [bb]about our righteousness;
Come and let us (DW)recount in Zion
The work of Yahweh our God!
11 (DX)Sharpen the arrows, fill the quivers!
Yahweh has aroused the spirit of the kings of the Medes
Because His purpose is against Babylon to destroy it;
For it is the (DY)vengeance of Yahweh, vengeance for His temple.
12 (DZ)Lift up a standard against the walls of Babylon;
Make strong the watch;
Raise up [bc]watchmen;
Establish men in ambush!
For Yahweh has both (EA)purposed and performed
What He spoke concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.
13 O you who (EB)dwell by abundant waters,
Abundant in (EC)treasures,
Your end has come,
The [bd]measure of your [be](ED)end.
14 (EE)Yahweh of hosts has sworn by Himself:
“Surely I will fill you with a [bf]population like (EF)locusts,
And they will cry out with [bg]shouts of victory over you.”
15 It is (EG)He who made the earth by His power,
Who established the world by His wisdom,
And by His understanding He (EH)stretched out the heavens.
16 When He gives forth His (EI)voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens,
And He causes the (EJ)clouds to ascend from the end of the earth;
He makes lightning for the rain
And brings forth the (EK)wind from His storehouses.
17 (EL)All mankind is senseless, devoid of knowledge;
Every goldsmith is put to shame by his graven image,
For his molten images are (EM)a lie,
And there is no breath in them.
18 They are (EN)vanity, a work of mockery;
In the time of their punishment they will perish.
19 The (EO)portion of Jacob is not like these;
For the [bh]Maker of all is He,
And of the [bi]tribe of His inheritance;
(EP)Yahweh of hosts is His name.
20 He says, “You are My (EQ)instrument of shattering, My weapon of war;
And with you I (ER)shatter nations,
And with you I destroy kingdoms.
21 With you I (ES)shatter the horse and his rider,
And with you I shatter the (ET)chariot and its rider,
22 And with you I shatter (EU)man and woman,
And with you I shatter old man and (EV)youth,
And with you I shatter choice man and virgin,
23 And with you I shatter the shepherd and his flock,
And with you I shatter the farmer and his pair of oxen,
And with you I shatter governors and prefects.
24 “But I will repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of (EW)Chaldea for (EX)all their evil that they have done in Zion before your eyes,” declares Yahweh.
25 “Behold, (EY)I am against you, (EZ)O destroying mountain,
Who destroys the whole earth,” declares Yahweh,
“And I will stretch out My hand against you
And roll you down from the crags,
And I will make you a (FA)burnt out mountain.
26 They will not take from you even a stone for a corner
Nor a stone for foundations,
But you will be a perpetual (FB)desolation,” declares Yahweh.
27 (FC)Lift up a standard in the land,
Blow a trumpet among the nations!
Set apart the nations against her;
Summon against her the (FD)kingdoms of (FE)Ararat, Minni, and (FF)Ashkenaz;
Appoint a marshal against her;
Bring up the (FG)horses like bristly locusts.
28 Set apart the nations against her,
The kings of the Medes,
[bj]Their governors and all [bk]their [bl]prefects
And every land of [bm]their rule.
29 So the (FH)land quakes and writhes,
For the purposes of Yahweh against Babylon stand,
To make the land of Babylon
[bn]A (FI)desolation without inhabitants.
30 The (FJ)mighty men of Babylon have ceased fighting;
They inhabit the strongholds;
(FK)Their might is dried up;
They are becoming (FL)like women;
Their dwelling places are set on fire;
The (FM)bars of her gates are broken.
31 One (FN)runner runs to meet [bo]another,
And one (FO)messenger to meet [bp]another,
To give a message to the king of Babylon
That his city has been captured from end to end;
32 The fords also have been seized,
And they have burned the marshes with fire,
And the men of war are terrified.
33 For thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel:
“The daughter of Babylon is like a (FP)threshing floor
At the time [bq]it is stamped firm;
Yet in a little while the time of (FQ)harvest will come for her.”
34 “Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has (FR)devoured me and brought me into confusion;
He has set me down like an (FS)empty vessel;
He has (FT)swallowed me like a sea monster;
He has filled his stomach with my delicacies;
He has rinsed me away.
35 May the (FU)violence done to me and to my flesh be upon Babylon,”
The [br]inhabitant of Zion will say;
And, “May my blood be upon the inhabitants of Chaldea,”
Jerusalem will say.
36 Therefore thus says Yahweh,
“Behold, I am going to (FV)plead your case
And (FW)exact full vengeance for you;
And (FX)I will dry up her [bs]sea
And make her fountain dry.
37 (FY)Babylon will become a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals,
An (FZ)object of horror and hissing, without inhabitants.
38 They will roar together like (GA)young lions;
They will growl like lions’ cubs.
39 When they become heated up, I will set before them their feast
And (GB)make them drunk, that they may exult
And may (GC)sleep a perpetual sleep
And not wake up,” declares Yahweh.
40 “I will bring them down like [bt]lambs (GD)to the slaughter,
Like rams together with male goats.
41 “How [bu](GE)Sheshak has been captured,
And (GF)the praise of the whole earth been seized!
How Babylon has become an object of horror among the nations!
42 The [bv](GG)sea has come up over Babylon;
She has been covered with its tumultuous waves.
43 Her cities have become an (GH)object of horror,
A parched land, and a desert,
A land in which (GI)no man lives
And through which no son of man passes.
44 (GJ)I will punish Bel in Babylon,
And I will make what he has swallowed (GK)come out of his mouth;
And the nations will no longer (GL)stream to him.
Even the (GM)wall of Babylon has fallen down!
45 “(GN)Come forth from her midst, My people,
And each of you (GO)escape with his life
From the burning anger of Yahweh.
46 Now (GP)lest your heart grow faint,
And you fear the (GQ)report that will be heard in the land—
For the report will come [bw]one year,
And after that [bx]another report in [by]another year,
And violence will be in the land
With (GR)ruler against ruler—
47 Therefore behold, days are coming
When I will punish the (GS)graven images of Babylon;
And her whole land will be (GT)put to shame,
And all her slain will fall in her midst.
48 Then (GU)heaven and earth and all that is in them
Will shout for joy over Babylon,
For (GV)the destroyers will come to her from the north,”
Declares Yahweh.
49 (GW)Indeed Babylon is to fall for the slain of Israel,
As also for Babylon (GX)the slain of all the earth have fallen.
50 You (GY)who have escaped the sword,
Go! Do not stand around!
(GZ)Remember Yahweh from afar,
And let Jerusalem come upon your heart.
51 (HA)We are ashamed because we have heard reproach;
Dishonor has covered our faces,
For (HB)strangers have entered
The holy places of the house of Yahweh.
52 “Therefore behold, the days are coming,” declares Yahweh,
“When I will punish her (HC)graven images,
And the mortally wounded will groan throughout her land.
53 Though Babylon should (HD)ascend to the heavens,
And though she should fortify [bz]her lofty stronghold,
From (HE)Me destroyers will come to her,” declares Yahweh.
54 The (HF)sound of an outcry from Babylon,
And of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans!
55 For Yahweh is going to destroy Babylon,
And He will make her loud [ca]noise [cb]vanish from her.
And their (HG)waves will roar like many waters;
The rumbling of their voices [cc]sounds forth.
56 For the (HH)destroyer is coming against her, against Babylon,
And her mighty men will be captured;
Their (HI)bows are shattered;
For Yahweh is a God of (HJ)recompense,
He will fully repay.
57 “I will (HK)make her princes and her wise men drunk,
Her governors, her prefects, and her mighty men,
That they may sleep a (HL)perpetual sleep and not wake up,”
(HM)Declares the King, whose name is Yahweh of hosts.
58 Thus says Yahweh of hosts,
“The broad (HN)wall of Babylon will be completely razed,

59 The [cd]message which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of (HR)Neriah, the grandson of Mahseiah, when he went with (HS)Zedekiah the king of Judah to Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. (Now Seraiah was quartermaster.) 60 So Jeremiah (HT)wrote in a single [ce]scroll all the calamity which would come upon Babylon, that is, all these words which have been written concerning Babylon. 61 Then Jeremiah said to Seraiah, “As soon as you come to Babylon, then see that you read all these words aloud, 62 and then you will say, ‘You, O Yahweh, have [cf]promised concerning this place to (HU)cut it off, so that there will be (HV)nothing inhabiting it, [cg]whether man or beast, but it will be a perpetual desolation.’ 63 And as soon as you finish reading this [ch]scroll, you will tie a stone to it and (HW)throw it into the middle of the Euphrates, 64 and then you will say, ‘Just so shall Babylon sink down and (HX)not rise again because of the calamity that I am going to bring upon her; and they will become (HY)utterly weary.’” (HZ)Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.
