¹⁰ It will ^(A)not be quenched night or day;
Its ^(B)smoke will go up forever.
From ^(C)generation to generation it will be laid waste;
^(D)None will pass through it forever and ever.
¹¹ But ^[a](E)pelican and hedgehog will possess it,
And ^[b]owl and raven will dwell in it;
And He will stretch over it the ^(F)line of utter formlessness
And the ^[c]plumb line of utter void.
¹² Its nobles—there is ^(G)no one there
Whom they may proclaim king—
And all its princes will be ^(H)non-existent.
¹³ And thorns will come up in its ^(I)fortified towers,
Weeds and thistles in its fortified cities;
It will also be a haunt of ^(J)jackals
And an abode of ostriches.
¹⁴ And the desert ^(K)creatures will meet with the ^[d]wolves;
The ^[e](L)hairy goat also will cry to its kind;
Surely, the ^[f]night creature will obtain relief there
And will find itself a resting place.
¹⁵ The ^[g]owl will make its nest and find its escape there,
And it will hatch its eggs and gather them in its shade.
Surely, ^(M)the ^[h]falcons will be gathered there,
Every one with its kind.

^37 (A)Babylon will become a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals,
An ^(B)object of horror and hissing, without inhabitants.
³⁸ They will roar together like ^(C)young lions;
They will growl like lions’ cubs.
³⁹ When they become heated up, I will set before them their feast
And ^(D)make them drunk, that they may exult
And may ^(E)sleep a perpetual sleep
And not wake up,” declares Yahweh.
⁴⁰ “I will bring them down like ^[a]lambs ^(F)to the slaughter,
Like rams together with male goats.
