Warning Against Willful Sin

26 For if we go on (A)sinning willfully after receiving (B)the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a terrifying expectation of (C)judgment and (D)the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries. 28 (E)Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy by the mouth of two or three witnesses. 29 (F)How much worse punishment do you think he will deserve (G)who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has regarded as defiled (H)the blood of the covenant (I)by which he was sanctified, and has (J)insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said, “(K)Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.” And again, “(L)The [a]Lord will judge His people.”

For (A)if God did not spare angels who sinned, but cast them into the [a]pit and (B)delivered them to chains of darkness, being kept for judgment; and did not spare (C)the ancient world, but preserved (D)Noah, a [b]preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a (E)flood upon the world of the ungodly; and if He (F)condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an (G)example to those who would (H)live ungodly lives thereafter; and if He (I)rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the (J)sensual conduct of (K)unprincipled men (for by what he saw and heard that (L)righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds), (M)then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from [c]trial, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the (N)day of judgment, 10 and especially those who (O)go after the flesh in its corrupt lust and (P)despise authority.

Daring, (Q)self-willed, they do not tremble when they (R)blaspheme [d]glorious ones, 11 (S)whereas angels who are greater in strength and power do not bring a reviling judgment against them before the Lord. 12 But (T)these, like unreasoning animals, (U)born as creatures of instinct to be captured and killed, blaspheming where they have no knowledge, will in [e]the destruction of those creatures also be destroyed, 13 suffering unrighteousness as (V)the wages of their unrighteousness, considering it a pleasure to (W)revel in the (X)daytime—they are stains and blemishes, (Y)reveling in their [f]deceptions, as they (Z)feast with you, 14 having eyes full of adultery and unceasing sin, (AA)enticing (AB)unstable souls, having a heart trained in (AC)greed—they are (AD)accursed children. 15 Forsaking (AE)the right way, they have gone astray, having followed (AF)the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved (AG)the wages of unrighteousness, 16 but he received a rebuke for his own lawlessness, (AH)for a mute donkey, speaking out with a voice of a man, restrained the madness of the prophet.

17 These are (AI)springs without water and mists driven by a storm, (AJ)for whom the [g]black darkness has been kept. 18 For speaking out (AK)arrogant words of (AL)vanity, they (AM)entice by (AN)sensual lusts of the flesh, those who barely (AO)escape from the ones who conducted themselves in error, 19 promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for (AP)by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved. 20 For if they are overcome, having both (AQ)escaped the defilements of the world by (AR)the knowledge of the (AS)Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and having again been (AT)entangled in them, then (AU)the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21 (AV)For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from (AW)the holy commandment (AX)handed on to them. 22 The [h]message of the true proverb has happened to them, “(AY)A dog returns to its own vomit,” and, “A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire.”

God’s Wrath on Unrighteousness

18 For (A)the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who (B)suppress the truth [a]in unrighteousness, 19 because (C)that which is known about God is evident [b]within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For (D)since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, both His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, (E)being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21 For even though they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or give thanks, but they became (F)futile in their thoughts, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 (G)Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and (H)exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the likeness of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.

24 Therefore (I)God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be (J)dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for [c]a (K)lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, (L)who is blessed [d]forever. Amen.

26 For this reason (M)God gave them over to (N)dishonorable passions; for their (O)females exchanged the natural function for that which is [e]unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the (P)males abandoned the natural function of the female and burned in their desire toward one another, (Q)males with males committing [f]indecent acts and receiving in [g]their own persons the due penalty of their error.

28 And just as they did not see fit [h]to acknowledge God, (R)God gave them over to an unfit mind, to do those things which are not proper, 29 having been filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are (S)gossips, 30 slanderers, [i](T)haters of God, violent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, (U)disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, (V)unloving, unmerciful; 32 and although they know the righteous requirement of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of (W)death, they not only do the same, but also (X)give hearty approval to those who practice them.

(C)You shall have no other (D)gods [b]before Me.
(E)You shall not make for yourself [c]an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
(F)You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, Yahweh your God, am a (G)jealous God, (H)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
but showing lovingkindness to (I)thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
(J)You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain, for Yahweh will not [d]leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.
“Remember (K)the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
(L)Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of Yahweh your God; in it (M)you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female slave or your cattle or your sojourner who is within your gates.
11 (N)For in six days Yahweh made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.
12 (O)Honor your father and your mother, that your (P)days may be prolonged in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.

Faith Comes by Hearing

For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of law: “(A)The man who does these things shall live by them.” But (B)the righteousness of faith speaks in this way: “(C)Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will go up into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down), or ‘Who will go down into the (D)abyss?’ (that is, to (E)bring Christ up from the dead).” But what does it say? “(F)The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, [a]that (G)if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and (H)believe in your heart that (I)God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, [b]leading to righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, [c]leading to salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “(J)Whoever believes upon Him will not be put to shame.” 12 For (K)there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord is (L)Lord of (M)all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him, 13 for “(N)Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

14 How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him (O)whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without (P)a preacher? 15 And how will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “(Q)How beautiful are the feet of those who (R)proclaim good news of good things!”

16 However, they (S)did not all heed the [d]good news, for Isaiah says, “(T)Lord, who has believed our report?” 17 So faith comes from (U)hearing, and hearing by (V)the word [e]of Christ.

18 But I say, have they never heard? On the contrary, they have;

(W)Their voice has gone out into all the earth,
And their words to the ends of the [f]world.”

19 But I say, did Israel not know? First Moses says,

(X)I will (Y)make you jealous by that which is not a nation,
By a nation without understanding will I anger you.”

20 And Isaiah is very bold and says,

(Z)I was found by those who did not seek Me,
I became manifest to those who did not ask for Me.”

21 But as for Israel He says, “(AA)All day long I have stretched out My hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.”

21 (G)Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 (H)Many will say to Me on (I)that day, ‘Lord, Lord, in Your name did we not prophesy, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name do many [d]miracles?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; (J)depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’

Be Imitators of God

(A)Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and (B)walk in love, just as Christ also (C)loved [a]us and (D)gave Himself up for us, an (E)offering and a sacrifice to God [b]as a (F)fragrant aroma.

But (G)sexual immorality [c]or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among [d]saints; nor (H)filthiness and foolish talk, or coarse jesting, which (I)are not fitting, but rather (J)giving of thanks. For this you know with certainty, that (K)no one sexually immoral or impure or greedy, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom (L)of Christ and God.

(M)Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things (N)the wrath of God comes upon (O)the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be (P)partakers with them, for (Q)you were formerly (R)darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as (S)children of light (for (T)the fruit of that light consists in all (U)goodness and righteousness and truth), 10 [e](V)trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 (W)And do not participate in the unfruitful (X)works of (Y)darkness, but instead even [f](Z)expose them. 12 For it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things become visible (AA)when they are [g]exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. 14 For this reason [h]it says,

Put On the New Man

Therefore, if you have been (A)raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, (B)seated at the right hand of God. [a](C)Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you (D)died and your life has been hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, (E)who is our life, is manifested, (F)then you also will be manifested with Him in glory.

(G)Therefore, [b]consider (H)the members of your earthly body as dead to (I)sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry. On account of these things, (J)the wrath of God is coming [c]upon the sons of disobedience, and (K)in them you also once walked, when you were living [d]in them. But now you also, (L)lay them all aside: (M)wrath, anger, malice, slander, and (N)abusive speech from your mouth. [e](O)Do not lie to one another, since you (P)put off the old man with its evil practices, 10 and have (Q)put on the new man who is being [f](R)renewed to a full knowledge (S)according to the image of the One who (T)created him— 11 a renewal in which (U)there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, (V)circumcised and uncircumcised, [g](W)barbarian, Scythian, (X)slave, and freeman, but (Y)Christ is all and in all.

12 So, as the (Z)elect of God, holy and beloved, (AA)put on a (AB)heart of compassion, kindness, (AC)humility, gentleness, and [h](AD)patience; 13 (AE)bearing with one another, and (AF)graciously forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone, (AG)just as the Lord graciously forgave you, so also should you. 14 Above all these things put on love, which is [i](AH)the perfect bond of (AI)unity. 15 And let (AJ)the peace of Christ [j]rule in your hearts, to which [k]indeed you were called in (AK)one body, and [l]be thankful. 16 Let (AL)the word of [m]Christ dwell in you richly, [n]with all wisdom (AM)teaching and admonishing [o]one another (AN)with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, (AO)singing [p]with gratefulness in your hearts to God. 17 (AP)And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, (AQ)giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
