Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord;

for the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church, and He is the savior of the body.

Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the Word,

Let there be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse [obscene or vulgar] joking, because such things are not appropriate [for believers]; but instead speak of your thankfulness [to God].

For be sure of this: no immoral, impure, or greedy person—for that one is [in effect] an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God [for such a person places a higher value on something other than God].

Let no one deceive you with empty arguments [that encourage you to sin], for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience [those who habitually sin].

So do not participate or even associate with them [in the rebelliousness of sin].

For once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of Light [live as those who are native-born to the Light]

(for the fruit [the effect, the result] of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth),

trying to learn [by experience] what is pleasing to the Lord [and letting your lifestyles be examples of what is most acceptable to Him—your behavior expressing gratitude to God for your salvation].

Do not participate in the worthless and unproductive deeds of darkness, but instead expose them [by exemplifying personal integrity, moral courage, and godly character];

for it is disgraceful even to mention the things that such people practice in secret.

But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light [of God’s precepts], for it is light that makes everything visible.

For this reason He says, “Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine [as dawn] upon you and give you light.”

Therefore see that you walk carefully [living life with honor, purpose, and courage; shunning those who tolerate and enable evil], not as the unwise, but as wise [sensible, intelligent, discerning people],

making the very most of your time [on earth, recognizing and taking advantage of each opportunity and using it with wisdom and diligence], because the days are [filled with] evil.

Therefore do not be foolish and thoughtless, but understand and firmly grasp what the will of the Lord is.

Do not get drunk with wine, for that is wickedness (corruption, stupidity), but be filled with the [Holy] Spirit and constantly guided by Him.

Speak to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, [offering praise by] singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;

always giving thanks to God the Father for all things, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

being subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as [a service] to the Lord.

For the husband is head of the wife, as Christ is head of the church, Himself being the Savior of the body.

But as the church is subject to Christ, so also wives should be subject to their husbands in everything [respecting both their position as protector and their responsibility to God as head of the house].

Husbands, love your wives [seek the highest good for her and surround her with a caring, unselfish love], just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,

so that He might sanctify the church, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word [of God],

so that [in turn] He might present the church to Himself in glorious splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy [set apart for God] and blameless.

Even so husbands should and are morally obligated to love their own wives as [being in a sense] their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself.

For no one ever hated his own body, but [instead] he nourishes and protects and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church,

because we are members (parts) of His body.

For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall be joined [and be faithfully devoted] to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.

This mystery [of two becoming one] is great; but I am speaking with reference to [the relationship of] Christ and the church.

However, each man among you [without exception] is to love his wife as his very own self [with behavior worthy of respect and esteem, always seeking the best for her with an attitude of lovingkindness], and the wife [must see to it] that she respects and delights in her husband [that she notices him and prefers him and treats him with loving concern, treasuring him, honoring him, and holding him dear].

Therefore be imitators of God [copy Him and follow His example], as well-beloved children [imitate their father].

And walk in love, [esteeming and delighting in one another] as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us, a slain offering and sacrifice to God [for you, so that it became] a sweet fragrance.

But immorality (sexual vice) and all impurity [of lustful, rich, wasteful living] or greediness must not even be named among you, as is fitting and proper among saints (God’s consecrated people).

Let there be no filthiness (obscenity, indecency) nor foolish and sinful (silly and corrupt) talk, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting or becoming; but instead voice your thankfulness [to God].

For be sure of this: that no person practicing sexual vice or impurity in thought or in life, or one who is covetous [who has lustful desire for the property of others and is greedy for gain]—for he [in effect] is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Let no one delude and deceive you with empty excuses and groundless arguments [for these sins], for through these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of rebellion and disobedience.

So do not associate or be sharers with them.

For the fruit (the effect, the product) of the Light or the Spirit [consists] in every form of kindly goodness, uprightness of heart, and trueness of life.

And try to learn [in your experience] what is pleasing to the Lord [let your lives be constant proofs of what is most acceptable to Him].

Take no part in and have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds and enterprises of darkness, but instead [let your lives be so in contrast as to] expose and reprove and convict them.

For it is a shame even to speak of or mention the things that [such people] practice in secret.

But when anything is exposed and reproved by the light, it is made visible and clear; and where everything is visible and clear there is light.

Therefore He says, Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall shine (make day dawn) upon you and give you light.

Look carefully then how you walk! Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise (sensible, intelligent people),

Making the very most of the time [buying up each opportunity], because the days are evil.

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but ever be filled and stimulated with the [Holy] Spirit.

Speak out to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, offering praise with voices [and instruments] and making melody with all your heart to the Lord,

At all times and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.

Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).

Wives, be subject (be submissive and adapt yourselves) to your own husbands as [a service] to the Lord.

For the husband is head of the wife as Christ is the Head of the church, Himself the Savior of [His] body.

As the church is subject to Christ, so let wives also be subject in everything to their husbands.

Sexual immorality, and any kind of impurity or greed, shouldn’t even be mentioned among you, which is right for holy persons.

Obscene language, silly talk, or vulgar jokes aren’t acceptable for believers. Instead, there should be thanksgiving.

Because you know for sure that persons who are sexually immoral, impure, or greedy—which happens when things become gods—those persons won’t inherit the kingdom of Christ and God.

Nobody should deceive you with stupid ideas. God’s anger comes down on those who are disobedient because of this kind of thing.

So you shouldn’t have anything to do with them.

You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord, so live your life as children of light.

Light produces fruit that consists of every sort of goodness, justice, and truth.

Therefore, test everything to see what’s pleasing to the Lord,

and don’t participate in the unfruitful actions of darkness. Instead, you should reveal the truth about them.

It’s embarrassing to even talk about what certain persons do in secret.

But everything exposed to the light is revealed by the light.

Everything that is revealed by the light is light. Therefore, it says, Wake up, sleeper! Get up from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.

So be careful to live your life wisely, not foolishly.

Take advantage of every opportunity because these are evil times.

Because of this, don’t be ignorant, but understand the Lord’s will.

Don’t get drunk on wine, which produces depravity. Instead, be filled with the Spirit in the following ways:

speak to each other with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; sing and make music to the Lord in your hearts;

always give thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

and submit to each other out of respect for Christ.

For example, wives should submit to their husbands as if to the Lord.

A husband is the head of his wife like Christ is head of the church, that is, the savior of the body.

So wives submit to their husbands in everything like the church submits to Christ.

As for husbands, love your wives just like Christ loved the church and gave himself for her.

He did this to make her holy by washing her in a bath of water with the word.

He did this to present himself with a splendid church, one without any sort of stain or wrinkle on her clothes, but rather one that is holy and blameless.

That’s how husbands ought to love their wives—in the same way as they do their own bodies. Anyone who loves his wife loves himself.

No one ever hates his own body, but feeds it and takes care of it just like Christ does for the church

because we are parts of his body.

This is why a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two of them will be one body.

Marriage is a significant allegory, and I’m applying it to Christ and the church.

In any case, as for you individually, each one of you should love his wife as himself, and wives should respect their husbands.

So imitate God, as his dear children;

and live a life of love, just as also the Messiah loved us, indeed, on our behalf gave himself up as an offering, as a slaughtered sacrifice to God with a pleasing fragrance.

Among you there should not even be mentioned sexual immorality, or any kind of impurity, or greed; these are utterly inappropriate for God’s holy people.

Also out of place are obscenity and stupid talk or coarse language; instead, you should be giving thanks.

For of this you can be sure: every sexually immoral, impure or greedy person — that is, every idol-worshipper — has no share in the Kingdom of the Messiah and of God.

Let no one deceive you with empty talk; for it is because of these things that God’s judgment is coming on those who disobey him.

So don’t become partners with them!

For you used to be darkness; but now, united with the Lord, you are light. Live like children of light,

for the fruit of the light is in every kind of goodness, rightness and truth —

try to determine what will please the Lord.

Have nothing to do with the deeds produced by darkness, but instead expose them,

for it is shameful even to speak of the things these people do in secret.

But everything exposed to the light is revealed clearly for what it is,

since anything revealed is a light. This is why it says, “Get up, sleeper! Arise from the dead, and the Messiah will shine on you!”

Therefore, pay careful attention to how you conduct your life — live wisely, not unwisely.

Use your time well, for these are evil days.

So don’t be foolish, but try to understand what the will of the Lord is.

Don’t get drunk with wine, because it makes you lose control. Instead, keep on being filled with the Spirit —

sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs to each other; sing to the Lord and make music in your heart to him;

always give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah.

Submit to one another in fear of the Messiah.

Wives should submit to their husbands as they do to the Lord;

because the husband is head of the wife, just as the Messiah, as head of the Messianic Community, is himself the one who keeps the body safe.

Just as the Messianic Community submits to the Messiah, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

As for husbands, love your wives, just as the Messiah loved the Messianic Community, indeed, gave himself up on its behalf,

in order to set it apart for God, making it clean through immersion in the mikveh, so to speak,

in order to present the Messianic Community to himself as a bride to be proud of, without a spot, wrinkle or any such thing, but holy and without defect.

This is how husbands ought to love their wives — like their own bodies; for the man who loves his wife is loving himself.

Why, no one ever hated his own flesh! On the contrary, he feeds it well and takes care of it, just as the Messiah does the Messianic Community,

because we are parts of his Body.

There is profound truth hidden here, which I say concerns the Messiah and the Messianic Community.

However, the text also applies to each of you individually: let each man love his wife as he does himself, and see that the wife respects her husband.

Do as God does. After all, you are his dear children.

Let love be your guide. Christ loved us and offered his life for us as a sacrifice that pleases God.

You are God's people, so don't let it be said that any of you are immoral or indecent or greedy.

Don't use dirty or foolish or filthy words. Instead, say how thankful you are.

Being greedy, indecent, or immoral is just another way of worshiping idols. You can be sure people who behave in this way will never be part of the kingdom that belongs to Christ and to God.

Don't let anyone trick you with foolish talk. God punishes everyone who disobeys him and says foolish things.

So don't have anything to do with anyone like that.

You used to be like people living in the dark, but now you are people of the light because you belong to the Lord. So act like people of the light

and make your light shine. Be good and honest and truthful,

as you try to please the Lord.

Don't take part in doing those worthless things that are done in the dark. Instead, show how wrong they are.

It is disgusting even to talk about what is done in the dark.

But the light will show what these things are really like.

Light shows up everything, just as the Scriptures say, “Wake up from your sleep and rise from death. Then Christ will shine on you.”

Act like people with good sense and not like fools.

These are evil times, so make every minute count.

Don't be stupid. Instead, find out what the Lord wants you to do.

Don't destroy yourself by getting drunk, but let the Spirit fill your life.

When you meet together, sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, as you praise the Lord with all your heart.

Always use the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to thank God the Father for everything.

Honor Christ and put others first.

A wife should put her husband first, as she does the Lord.

A husband is the head of his wife, as Christ is the head and the Savior of the church, which is his own body.

Wives should always put their husbands first, as the church puts Christ first.

A husband should love his wife as much as Christ loved the church and gave his life for it.

He made the church holy by the power of his word, and he made it pure by washing it with water.

Christ did this, so he would have a glorious and holy church, without faults or spots or wrinkles or any other flaws.

In the same way, a husband should love his wife as much as he loves himself. A husband who loves his wife shows he loves himself.

None of us hate our own bodies. We provide for them and take good care of them, just as Christ does for the church,

because we are each part of his body.

As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother to get married, and he becomes like one person with his wife.”

This is a great mystery, but I understand it to mean Christ and his church.

So each husband should love his wife as much as he loves himself, and each wife should respect her husband.

Be ye therefore imitators of God, as beloved children,

and walk in love, even as the Christ loved us, and delivered himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour.

But fornication and all uncleanness or unbridled lust, let it not be even named among you, as it becomes saints;

and filthiness and foolish talking, or jesting, which are not convenient; but rather thanksgiving.

For this reason, do not be foolish ones, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

And do not get-drunk with wine, in which is wild-living, but be filled with the Spirit,

speaking to each other with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making-melody with your heart to the Lord,

giving-thanks always for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to our God and Father,

being-subject to one another in the fear of Christ—

... wives— to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

Because a husband is the head of his wife as also Christ is the head of the church, He being the Savior of the body.

Nevertheless, as the church is subject to Christ, in this manner also let the wives be to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, be loving your wives just-as Christ also loved the church and handed Himself over for her

in order that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her with the washing of water by the word,

in order that He might present the church to Himself as glorious— not having spot or wrinkle or any of such things, but that she might be holy and without-blemish.

In this manner, husbands ought also to be loving their wives as their own bodies. The one loving his wife is loving himself.

For no one ever hated his own flesh, but he nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church,

because we are body-parts of His body.

“For this cause a man shall leave-behind his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two will be one flesh” [Gen 2:24].

This mystery is great, but I am speaking with reference to Christ and with reference to the church.

Nevertheless, you also individually, let each in this manner be loving his wife as himself. And let the wife see that she be respecting her husband.

Be ye therefore followers of God, as most dear children;

And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath delivered himself for us, an oblation and a sacrifice to God for an odour of sweetness.

But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not so much as be named among you, as becometh saints:

Or obscenity, or foolish talking, or scurrility, which is to no purpose; but rather giving of thanks.

Being subject one to another, in the fear of Christ.

Let women be subject to their husbands, as to the Lord:

Because the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church. He is the saviour of his body.

But there must be no sexual sin among you. There must not be any kind of evil or selfishly wanting more and more, because such things are not right for God’s holy people.

Also, there must be no evil talk among you. Don’t say things that are foolish or filthy. These are not for you. But you should be giving thanks to God.

You can be sure of this: No one will have a place in the kingdom of Christ and of God if that person commits sexual sins, or does evil things, or is a person who selfishly wants more and more. A greedy person like that is serving a false god.

Don’t let anyone fool you with words that are not true. God gets very angry when people who don’t obey him talk like that.

So don’t have anything to do with them.

In the past you were full of darkness, but now you are full of light in the Lord. So live like children who belong to the light.

This light produces every kind of goodness, right living, and truth.

Try to learn what pleases the Lord.

Have no part in the things that people in darkness do, which produce nothing good. Instead, tell everyone how wrong those things are.

Actually, it is shameful to even talk about the things those people do in secret.

But the light makes clear how wrong those things are.

Yes, everything is made clear by the light. This is why we say, “Wake up, you who are sleeping! Rise from death, and Christ will shine on you.”

So be very careful how you live. Live wisely, not like fools.

I mean that you should use every opportunity you have for doing good, because these are evil times.

So don’t be foolish with your lives, but learn what the Lord wants you to do.

Don’t be drunk with wine, which will ruin your life, but be filled with the Spirit.

Encourage each other with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord.

Always give thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Be willing to serve each other out of respect for Christ.

Wives, be willing to serve your husbands the same as the Lord.

A husband is the head of his wife, just as Christ is the head of the church. Christ is the Savior of the church, which is his body.

The church serves under Christ, so it is the same with you wives. You should be willing to serve your husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives the same as Christ loved the church and gave his life for it.

He died to make the church holy. He used the telling of the Good News to make the church clean by washing it with water.

Christ died so that he could give the church to himself like a bride in all her beauty. He died so that the church could be holy and without fault, with no evil or sin or any other thing wrong in it.

And husbands should love their wives like that. They should love their wives as they love their own bodies. The man who loves his wife loves himself,

because no one ever hates his own body, but feeds and takes care of it. And that is what Christ does for the church

because we are parts of his body.

The Scriptures say, “That is why a man will leave his father and mother and join his wife, and the two people will become one.”

That secret truth is very important—I am talking about Christ and the church.

But each one of you must love his wife as he loves himself. And a wife must respect her husband.

You are God's children and he loves you very much. So you must try to be like him.

Show that you love other people. Remember how much Christ loved us. He gave himself as a sacrifice on our behalf. He offered himself in a way that pleased God, like a sacrifice with a lovely smell.

So, as God's people, you must never have sex with anyone that you are not married to. Do not do any kind of disgusting thing like that. Do not want many things for yourselves, just to make you happy. That is not how God's people should live.

Do not speak in a way which uses dirty words. Do not talk about silly things, like fools do. It is not right for God's people to talk like that. Instead, you should speak in a way which shows that you are thanking God.

You can be sure about this: If anyone has sex in a wrong way, that person does not belong to God's people. Nobody who does any kind of disgusting thing belongs to God's people. People who want many things just to please themselves are like people who worship an idol. They also do not belong to God's people. Nobody like that belongs to the kingdom where Christ and God rule. They will not receive the good things that God has prepared for his people.

Do not let anyone have a chance to deceive you with a false message about those kinds of bad things. God will certainly punish people who do not obey him.

So keep away from those kinds of people.

Once your minds were completely in the dark. But now you belong to the Lord. As a result, you have become full of light. So now you must live as people who belong to the light.

The light helps you to live in a way that is good, right and true.

You should learn more and more to do the things that please the Lord.

People whose minds are in the dark do things that have no good purpose. Keep away from wrong things like that. Instead, show how bad those things really are.

People like that should be ashamed of the things that they do secretly. Those things are too bad for us even to talk about.

But when God's light shines on something, people can see clearly its true nature.

Everything that becomes clear to see is in the light. That is why it says: ‘Wake up, you people who are asleep! Rise up from among the dead people! Then Christ will shine his light on you.’

So you must be very careful how you live. Live like people who are wise. Do not live like fools.

Many bad things are happening in these days. So, whenever you have a chance to do something good, do as much as you can.

Do not live like fools. But instead, understand what the Lord wants you to do.

Do not drink too much wine so that you become drunk. That will destroy your life. Instead, let God's Spirit fill you.

He will help you to speak to each other with all kinds of spiritual songs. Sing psalms from the Bible, and Christian songs. Praise the Lord with songs from inside yourselves.

And always thank God, the Father, for everything, by our Lord Jesus Christ's name.

Serve one another to show that you respect Christ as your master.

Wives, obey your own husbands, as you obey the Lord.

A husband has authority over his wife, in the same way that Christ has authority over the church. The church is like Christ's body. As its head, he saves her.

As the church serves Christ as its master, so wives should serve their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church. He even agreed to die on its behalf.

He did that to make us completely clean, as the people of God. It was like he washed us with water, as he brought God's message to us.

Christ himself did this to bring us to himself as a beautiful group of his people. His church would belong to him completely. It would be pure, without anything bad to spoil it.

So husbands should love their wives, just as they love their own bodies. A man who loves his wife shows that he loves himself.

There is nobody who hates his own body. Everyone feeds his body and he takes care of it. In the same way, the church is like Christ's body that he takes care of.

We are like the parts of Christ's body.

The Bible says this: ‘When a man marries, he leaves his father and his mother. Instead, God joins the man and his wife together. The two people become like one body.’

This is God's secret and it is difficult to understand. But I am saying that it teaches us about Christ and the church.

But each one of you husbands should understand this: love your own wife as you love yourself. And every wife among you must respect her husband.

Therefore, be imitators of God as his dearly loved children.

And walk in love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

But do not let sexual immorality, any kind of impurity, or greed even be mentioned among you, as is proper for saints.

Obscenity, foolish talk, and coarse joking are also out of place. Instead, give thanks.

Certainly you are aware of this: No immoral, impure, or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ, who is God.

Let no one deceive you with empty words. It is because of these things that the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience.

So do not share in what they do.

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light,

for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.

Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord,

and do not participate in fruitless deeds of darkness. Instead, expose them.

For it is shameful even to mention the things that are done by people in secret.

But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes things visible.

Therefore it is said, “Awake, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

Consider carefully, then, how you walk, not as unwise people, but as wise people.

Make the most of your time, because the days are evil.

For this reason, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

And do not get drunk on wine, which causes you to lose control. Instead, be filled with the Spirit

by speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (singing and making music with your hearts to the Lord),

by always giving thanks for everything to God the Father, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

and by submitting to one another in reverence for Christ.

Wives, submit to your own husbands as to the Lord.

For the husband is the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he himself is the Savior.

Moreover, as the church submits to Christ, so also wives are to submit to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, in the same way as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her

to make her holy, by cleansing her with the washing of water in connection with the Word.

He did this so that he could present her to himself as a glorious church, having no stain or wrinkle or any such thing, but so that she would be holy and blameless.

Also, there must be no ·evil talk [obscenity; filthiness] among you, and you must not speak foolishly or tell ·evil [crude; coarse; vulgar] jokes. These things are ·not right for you [out of place/character]. Instead, you should be giving thanks to God.

[^LFor] You can be sure of this: No one will have a ·place [inheritance] in the kingdom of Christ and of God who sins sexually, or does ·evil [impure] things, or is greedy. Anyone who is greedy is ·serving a false god [^Lan idolater].

Do not let anyone ·fool [deceive] you ·by telling you things that are not true [or with shallow philosophies; ^Lwith empty words], because these things will bring God’s ·anger [wrath] on ·those who do not obey him [^Lthe children/sons of disobedience].

So ·have nothing to do with them [or do not partner/associate with them].

In the past you were ·full of darkness [^Ldarkness], but now you are ·full of light [^Llight] in the Lord. So ·live [walk] like children ·who belong to [living in; ^Lof] the light.

·Light brings [^LFor the fruit of the light is] every kind of goodness, ·right living [righteousness], and truth.

·Try to learn [Discern; Test and prove] what pleases the Lord.

·Have nothing to do with [Take no part in] the things done in darkness, which are ·not worth anything [^Lunfruitful]. But ·show that they are wrong [expose them].

[^LFor] It is shameful even to talk about what those people do in secret.

But the light makes all things ·easy to see [visible; exposed],

and everything that is ·made easy to see [visible; exposed] ·can become [or becomes a; ^Lis] light. This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper! Rise from death, and Christ will ·shine on [give light to] you [^Clikely an early Christian hymn based on Is. 26:19 and 60:1–2].”

Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church [Col. 3:19; 1 Pet. 3:7] and gave himself for her

He did this so that he could present the church to himself ·like a bride in all her beauty [in splendor; glorious], with no ·evil or sin [^Lstain or wrinkle] or any other ·wrong thing in it [^Lsuch thing], but ·pure [holy] and ·without fault [blameless].

In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they love their own bodies. The man who loves his wife loves himself.

[^LFor] No one ever hates his own ·body [^Tflesh], but feeds and takes care of it. And that is what Christ does for the church,

because we are ·parts [members] of his body.

The Scripture says, “·So [For this reason] a man will leave his father and mother and be ·united [joined] with his wife, and the two will become one ·body [flesh; Gen. 2:24].”

This ·secret [mystery] is ·very important [or great; profound]—I am talking about Christ and the church.

·But [However; In any case; or To sum up] each one of you must love his wife as he loves himself, and a wife must ·respect [reverence; v. 21] her husband.

3 Lest, in those vices which he reprehended, they should set light by his admonitions, 5 he terrifieth them by denouncing severe judgment, 8 and stirreth them forward: 15 Then he defendeth from general lessons of manners, 22 to the particular duties of wives, 25 and husbands. Therefore as the Church is in subjection to Christ, even so let the wives be to their husbands in everything.

¶ Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the Church, and gave himself for it,

That he might sanctify it, and cleanse it by the washing of water through the word,

That he might make it unto himself a glorious Church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any such thing: but that it should be holy and without blame.

So ought men to love their wives, as their own bodies: he that loveth his wife, loveth himself.

Imitate God, since you are the children he loves.

Don’t let sexual sin, perversion of any kind, or greed even be mentioned among you. This is not appropriate behavior for God’s holy people.

It’s not right that dirty stories, foolish talk, or obscene jokes should be mentioned among you either. Instead, give thanks ⌞to God⌟.

You know very well that no person who is involved in sexual sin, perversion, or greed (which means worshiping wealth) can have any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Don’t let anyone deceive you with meaningless words. It is because of sins like these that God’s anger comes to those who refuse to obey him.

Don’t be partners with them.

Once you lived in the dark, but now the Lord has filled you with light. Live as children who have light.

Light produces everything that is good, that has God’s approval, and that is true.

Determine which things please the Lord.

Have nothing to do with the useless works that darkness produces. Instead, expose them for what they are.

It is shameful to talk about what some people do in secret.

Light exposes the true character of everything

because light makes everything easy to see. That’s why it says: “Wake up, sleeper! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” 

So then, be very careful how you live. Don’t live like foolish people but like wise people.

Make the most of your opportunities because these are evil days.

So don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord wants.

Don’t get drunk on wine, which leads to wild living. Instead, be filled with the Spirit 

by reciting psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs for your own good. Sing and make music to the Lord with your hearts.

Always thank God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Place yourselves under each other’s authority out of respect for Christ.

Wives, place yourselves under your husbands’ authority as you have placed yourselves under the Lord’s authority.

The husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. It is his body, and he is its Savior.

As the church is under Christ’s authority, so wives are under their husbands’ authority in everything.

Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave his life for it.

He did this to make the church holy by cleansing it, washing it using water along with spoken words.

Then he could present it to himself as a glorious church, without any kind of stain or wrinkle—holy and without faults.

So husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies. A man who loves his wife loves himself.

No one ever hated his own body. Instead, he feeds and takes care of it, as Christ takes care of the church.

We are parts of his body.

That’s why a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two will be one.

This is a great mystery. (I’m talking about Christ’s relationship to the church.)

But every husband must love his wife as he loves himself, and wives should respect their husbands.

Since you are God's dear children, you must try to be like him.

Your life must be controlled by love, just as Christ loved us and gave his life for us as a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice that pleases God.

Since you are God's people, it is not right that any matters of sexual immorality or indecency or greed should even be mentioned among you.

Nor is it fitting for you to use language which is obscene, profane, or vulgar. Rather you should give thanks to God.

You may be sure that no one who is immoral, indecent, or greedy (for greed is a form of idolatry) will ever receive a share in the Kingdom of Christ and of God.

Do not let anyone deceive you with foolish words; it is because of these very things that God's anger will come upon those who do not obey him.

So have nothing at all to do with such people.

You yourselves used to be in the darkness, but since you have become the Lord's people, you are in the light. So you must live like people who belong to the light,

for it is the light that brings a rich harvest of every kind of goodness, righteousness, and truth.

Try to learn what pleases the Lord.

Have nothing to do with the worthless things that people do, things that belong to the darkness. Instead, bring them out to the light.

( It is really too shameful even to talk about the things they do in secret.)

And when all things are brought out to the light, then their true nature is clearly revealed;

for anything that is clearly revealed becomes light. That is why it is said, “Wake up, sleeper, and rise from death, and Christ will shine on you.”

So be careful how you live. Don't live like ignorant people, but like wise people.

And so wives must submit themselves completely to their husbands just as the church submits itself to Christ.

He did this to dedicate the church to God by his word, after making it clean by washing it in water,

in order to present the church to himself in all its beauty—pure and faultless, without spot or wrinkle or any other imperfection.

Men ought to love their wives just as they love their own bodies. A man who loves his wife loves himself.

( None of us ever hate our own bodies. Instead, we feed them, and take care of them, just as Christ does the church;

for we are members of his body.)

As the scripture says, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and unite with his wife, and the two will become one.”

There is a deep secret truth revealed in this scripture, which I understand as applying to Christ and the church.

But it also applies to you: every husband must love his wife as himself, and every wife must respect her husband.

Therefore, be imitators of God, as dearly loved children.

And walk in love, as the Messiah also loved us and gave Himself for us, a sacrificial and fragrant offering to God.

But sexual immorality and any impurity or greed should not even be heard of among you, as is proper for saints.

Coarse and foolish talking or crude joking are not suitable, but rather giving thanks.

For know and recognize this: Every sexually immoral or impure or greedy person, who is an idolater, does not have an inheritance in the kingdom of the Messiah and of God.

Let no one deceive you with empty arguments, for God’s wrath is coming on the disobedient because of these things.

Therefore, do not become their partners.

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light—

for the fruit of the light results in all goodness, righteousness, and truth—

discerning what is pleasing to the Lord.

Don’t participate in the fruitless works of darkness, but instead expose them.

For it is shameful even to mention what is done by them in secret.

Everything exposed by the light is made clear,

for what makes everything clear is light. Therefore it is said: Get up, sleeper, and rise up from the dead, and the Messiah will shine on you.

Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk—not as unwise people but as wise—

making the most of the time, because the days are evil.

So don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

And don’t get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless actions, but be filled by the Spirit:

speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music from your heart to the Lord,

giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

submitting to one another in the fear of Christ.

Wives, submit to your own husbands as to the Lord,

To sum up, each one of you is to love his wife as himself, and the wife is to respect her husband.

You are God’s children whom he loves. So try to be like God.

Live a life of love. Love other people just as Christ loved us. Christ gave himself for us—he was a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice to God.

But there must be no sexual immorality among you. There must not be any kind of evil or greed. Those things are not right for God’s holy people.

Also, there must be no evil talk among you. You must not speak foolishly or tell evil jokes. These things are not right for you. But you should be giving thanks to God.

You can be sure of this: No one will have a place in the kingdom of Christ and of God who engages in sexual sin, or does evil things, or is greedy. Anyone who is greedy is serving a false god.

Do not let anyone fool you by telling you things that are not true. These things will bring God’s anger on those who do not obey him.

So have no part with them.

In the past you were full of darkness, but now you are full of light in the Lord. So live like children who belong to the light.

Light brings every kind of goodness, right living, and truth.

Try to learn what pleases the Lord.

Do not do the things that people in darkness do. That brings nothing good. But do good things to show that the things done in darkness are wrong.

It is shameful even to talk about what those people do in secret.

But the light makes all things easy to see.

And everything that is made easy to see can become light. This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper! Rise from death, and Christ will shine on you.”

I mean that you should use every chance you have for doing good, because these are evil times.

So do not be foolish with your lives. But learn what the Lord wants you to do.

Always give thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Be willing to obey each other. Do this because you respect Christ.

Wives, be under the authority of your husbands, as of the Lord.

The husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church. The church is Christ’s body—Christ is the Savior of the body.

The church is under the authority of Christ. So it is the same with you wives. You should be under the authority of your husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church. Christ died for the church

to make it belong to God. Christ used the word to make the church clean by washing it with water.

Christ died so that he could give the church to himself like a bride in all her beauty. He died so that the church could be pure and without fault, with no evil or sin or any other wrong thing in it.

And husbands should love their wives in the same way. They should love their wives as they love their own bodies. The man who loves his wife loves himself.

making the best use of your time because the times are evil.

Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

Stop getting drunk with wine, which leads to wild living, but keep on being filled with the Spirit.

Then you will recite to one another psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; you will sing and make music to the Lord with your hearts;

you will consistently give thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah;

and you will submit to one another out of reverence for the Messiah.

Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands as to the Lord.

For the husband is the head of his wife as the Messiah is the head of the church. It is he who is the Savior of the body.

Indeed, just as the church is submissive to the Messiah, so wives must be submissive to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives as the Messiah loved the church and gave himself for it,

so that he might make it holy by cleansing it, washing it with water and the word,

and might present the church to himself in all its glory, without a spot or wrinkle or anything of the kind, but holy and without fault.

In the same way, husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies. A man who loves his wife loves himself.

For no one has ever hated his own body, but he nourishes and tenderly cares for it, as the Messiah does the church.

For we are parts of his body—of his flesh and of his bones.

“That is why a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”

This is a great secret, but I am talking about the Messiah and the church.

But each individual man among you must love his wife as he loves himself; and may the wife fear her husband.

As children copy their fathers you, as God’s children, are to copy him. Live your lives in love—the same sort of love which Christ gives us and which he perfectly expressed when he gave himself up for us in sacrifice to God.

But as for sexual immorality in all its forms, and the itch to get your hands on what belongs to other people—don’t even talk about such things; they are not fit subjects for Christians to talk about. The key-note of your conversation should not be nastiness or silliness or flippancy, but a sense of all that we owe to God.

For of this much you can be certain: that neither the immoral nor the dirty-minded nor the covetous man (which latter is, in effect, worshipping a false god) has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Don’t let anyone fool you on this point, however plausible his argument. It is these very things which bring down the wrath of God upon the disobedient. Have nothing to do with men like that—once you were “darkness” but now you are “light”. Live then as children of the light. The light produces in men quite the opposite of sins like these—everything that is wholesome and good and true. Let your lives be living proofs of the things which please God. Steer clear of the activities of darkness; let your lives show by contrast how dreary and futile these things are. (You know the sort of things I mean—to detail their secret doings is really too shameful). For light is capable of “showing up” everything for what it really is. It is even possible (after all, it happened to you!) for light to turn the thing it shines upon into light also. Thus God speaks through the scriptures: “Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”

Live life, then, with a due sense of responsibility, not as men who do not know the meaning and purpose of life but as those who do. Make the best use of your time, despite all the difficulties of these days. Don’t be vague but firmly grasp what you know to be the will of God. Don’t get your stimulus from wine (for there is always the danger of excessive drinking), but let the Spirit stimulate your souls. Express your joy in singing among yourselves psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, making music in your hearts for the ears of God! Thank God at all times for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. And “fit in with” each other, because of your common reverence for Christ.

You wives must learn to adapt yourselves to your husbands, as you submit yourselves to the Lord, for the husband is the “head” of the wife in the same way that Christ is head of the Church and saviour of the body. The willing subjection of the Church to Christ should be reproduced in the submission of wives to their husbands.

But, remember, this means that the husband must give his wife the same sort of love that Christ gave to the Church, when he sacrificed himself for her. Christ gave himself to make her holy, having cleansed her through the baptism of his Word—to make her an altogether glorious Church in his eyes. She is to be free from spots, wrinkles or any other disfigurement—a Church holy and perfect.

Men ought to give their wives the love they naturally have for their own bodies. The love a man gives his wife is the extending of his love for himself to enfold her. Nobody ever hates or neglects his own body; he feeds and looks after it. And that is what Christ does for his body, the Church. And we are all members of that body, we are his flesh and blood! ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’. The marriage relationship is doubtless a great mystery, but I am speaking of something deeper still—the marriage of Christ and his Church. In practice what I have said amounts to this: let every one of you who is a husband love his wife as he loves himself; let the wife reverence her husband.

Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

Follow God’s example in everything you do just as a much loved child imitates his father.

Be full of love for others, following the example of Christ who loved you and gave himself to God as a sacrifice to take away your sins. And God was pleased, for Christ’s love for you was like sweet perfume to him.

Let there be no sex sin, impurity or greed among you. Let no one be able to accuse you of any such things.

Dirty stories, foul talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, remind each other of God’s goodness, and be thankful.

You can be sure of this: The Kingdom of Christ and of God will never belong to anyone who is impure or greedy, for a greedy person is really an idol worshiper—he loves and worships the good things of this life more than God.

Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the terrible wrath of God is upon all those who do them.

Don’t even associate with such people.

For though once your heart was full of darkness, now it is full of light from the Lord, and your behavior should show it!

Because of this light within you, you should do only what is good and right and true.

Learn as you go along what pleases the Lord.

Take no part in the worthless pleasures of evil and darkness, but instead, rebuke and expose them.

It would be shameful even to mention here those pleasures of darkness that the ungodly do.

But when you expose them, the light shines in upon their sin and shows it up, and when they see how wrong they really are, some of them may even become children of light!

That is why God says in the Scriptures, “Awake, O sleeper, and rise up from the dead; and Christ shall give you light.”

So be careful how you act; these are difficult days. Don’t be fools; be wise: make the most of every opportunity you have for doing good.

Don’t act thoughtlessly, but try to find out and do whatever the Lord wants you to.

Don’t drink too much wine, for many evils lie along that path; be filled instead with the Holy Spirit and controlled by him.

Talk with each other much about the Lord, quoting psalms and hymns and singing sacred songs, making music in your hearts to the Lord.

Always give thanks for everything to our God and Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Honor Christ by submitting to each other.

You wives must submit to your husbands’ leadership in the same way you submit to the Lord.

For a husband is in charge of his wife in the same way Christ is in charge of his body the Church. (He gave his very life to take care of it and be its Savior!)

So you wives must willingly obey your husbands in everything, just as the Church obeys Christ.

And you husbands, show the same kind of love to your wives as Christ showed to the Church when he died for her,

to make her holy and clean, washed by baptism and God’s Word;

so that he could give her to himself as a glorious Church without a single spot or wrinkle or any other blemish, being holy and without a single fault.

That is how husbands should treat their wives, loving them as parts of themselves. For since a man and his wife are now one, a man is really doing himself a favor and loving himself when he loves his wife!

No one hates his own body but lovingly cares for it, just as Christ cares for his body the Church, of which we are parts.

(That the husband and wife are one body is proved by the Scripture, which says, “A man must leave his father and mother when he marries so that he can be perfectly joined to his wife, and the two shall be one.”)

I know this is hard to understand, but it is an illustration of the way we are parts of the body of Christ.

So again I say, a man must love his wife as a part of himself; and the wife must see to it that she deeply respects her husband—obeying, praising, and honoring him.

Watch what God does, and then you do it, like children who learn proper behavior from their parents. Mostly what God does is love you. Keep company with him and learn a life of love. Observe how Christ loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn’t love in order to get something from us but to give everything of himself to us. Love like that.

Don’t allow love to turn into lust, setting off a downhill slide into sexual promiscuity, filthy practices, or bullying greed. Though some tongues just love the taste of gossip, those who follow Jesus have better uses for language than that. Don’t talk dirty or silly. That kind of talk doesn’t fit our style. Thanksgiving is our dialect.

You can be sure that using people or religion or things just for what you can get out of them—the usual variations on idolatry—will get you nowhere, and certainly nowhere near the kingdom of Christ, the kingdom of God.

Don’t let yourselves get taken in by religious smooth talk. God gets furious with people who are full of religious sales talk but want nothing to do with him. Don’t even hang around people like that.

You groped your way through that murk once, but no longer. You’re out in the open now. The bright light of Christ makes your way plain. So no more stumbling around. Get on with it! The good, the right, the true—these are the actions appropriate for daylight hours. Figure out what will please Christ, and then do it.

Don’t waste your time on useless work, mere busywork, the barren pursuits of darkness. Expose these things for the sham they are. It’s a scandal when people waste their lives on things they must do in the darkness where no one will see. Rip the cover off those frauds and see how attractive they look in the light of Christ. Wake up from your sleep, Climb out of your coffins; Christ will show you the light! So watch your step. Use your head. Make the most of every chance you get. These are desperate times!

Don’t live carelessly, unthinkingly. Make sure you understand what the Master wants.

Don’t drink too much wine. That cheapens your life. Drink the Spirit of God, huge drafts of him. Sing hymns instead of drinking songs! Sing songs from your heart to Christ. Sing praises over everything, any excuse for a song to God the Father in the name of our Master, Jesus Christ.

Out of respect for Christ, be courteously reverent to one another.

Wives, understand and support your husbands in ways that show your support for Christ. The husband provides leadership to his wife the way Christ does to his church, not by domineering but by cherishing. So just as the church submits to Christ as he exercises such leadership, wives should likewise submit to their husbands.

Husbands, go all out in your love for your wives, exactly as Christ did for the church—a love marked by giving, not getting. Christ’s love makes the church whole. His words evoke her beauty. Everything he does and says is designed to bring the best out of her, dressing her in dazzling white silk, radiant with holiness. And that is how husbands ought to love their wives. They’re really doing themselves a favor—since they’re already “one” in marriage.

No one abuses his own body, does he? No, he feeds and pampers it. That’s how Christ treats us, the church, since we are part of his body. And this is why a man leaves father and mother and cherishes his wife. No longer two, they become “one flesh.” This is a huge mystery, and I don’t pretend to understand it all. What is clearest to me is the way Christ treats the church. And this provides a good picture of how each husband is to treat his wife, loving himself in loving her, and how each wife is to honor her husband.

Therefore be imitators of God as beloved children.

Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.

In the same way husbands also should · love · their wives as · their own bodies. He who loves · his wife loves himself,

for no one ever hates · his own body but nourishes and takes care of it, just as · · Christ does the church,

since we are members of his body.

“For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to · his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”

· This mystery is profound, but I am speaking about Christ and about the church.

Nevertheless, · each one of you · is to love · his wife as he loves himself, and the wife is to respect her husband.

Imitate God, since you are the children he loves.

Live in love as Christ also loved us. He gave his life for us as an offering and sacrifice, a soothing aroma to God.

Don’t let sexual sin, perversion of any kind, or greed even be mentioned among you. This is not appropriate behavior for God’s holy people.

It’s not right that dirty stories, foolish talk, or obscene jokes should be mentioned among you either. Instead, give thanks to God.

You know very well that no person who is involved in sexual sin, perversion, or greed (which means worshiping wealth) can have any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Don’t let anyone deceive you with meaningless words. It is because of sins like these that God’s anger comes to those who refuse to obey him.

Don’t be partners with them.

Once you lived in the dark, but now the Lord has filled you with light. Live as children who have light.

Light produces everything that is good, that has God’s approval, and that is true.

Determine which things please the Lord.

Have nothing to do with the useless works that darkness produces. Instead, expose them for what they are.

It is shameful to talk about what some people do in secret.

Light exposes the true character of everything

because light makes everything easy to see. That’s why it says: “Wake up, sleeper! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

So then, be very careful how you live. Don’t live like foolish people but like wise people.

Make the most of your opportunities because these are evil days.

So don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord wants.

Don’t get drunk on wine, which leads to wild living. Instead, be filled with the Spirit

by reciting psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs for your own good. Sing and make music to the Lord with your hearts.

Always thank God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Yeshua Christ.

Place yourselves under each other’s authority out of respect for Christ.

Wives, place yourselves under your husbands’ authority as you have placed yourselves under the Lord’s authority.

The husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. It is his body, and he is its Savior.

As the church is under Christ’s authority, so wives are under their husbands’ authority in everything.

Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave his life for it.

He did this to make the church holy by cleansing it, washing it using water along with spoken words.

Then he could present it to himself as a glorious church, without any kind of stain or wrinkle—holy and without faults.

So husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies. A man who loves his wife loves himself.

No one ever hated his own body. Instead, he feeds and takes care of it, as Christ takes care of the church.

We are parts of his body.

That’s why a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two will be one.

This is a great mystery. (I’m talking about Christ’s relationship to the church.)

But every husband must love his wife as he loves himself, and wives should respect their husbands.

So be imitators of God, as beloved children,

and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma.

Immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is fitting among holy ones,

no obscenity or silly or suggestive talk, which is out of place, but instead, thanksgiving.

Be sure of this, that no immoral or impure or greedy person, that is, an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Let no one deceive you with empty arguments, for because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the disobedient.

So do not be associated with them.

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light,

for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth.

Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.

Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them,

for it is shameful even to mention the things done by them in secret;

but everything exposed by the light becomes visible,

giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.

Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord.

For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body.

You can be absolutely certain that no immoral or impure person or one who is greedy—that is, an idolater—will have any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Let no one deceive you with worthless arguments. These are the very things that bring down the wrath of God on those who are disobedient.

Do not associate with them.

Once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light,

for light produces all goodness and righteousness and truth.

Discern what the Lord finds pleasing.

Take no part in the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather seek to expose them.

For it is shameful even to speak of what deeds people do in secret.

However, everything that is exposed by the light is made visible,

and whatever is made visible is light. Therefore, it is said, “Awake, O sleeper! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

Therefore, take care to live as intelligent people, and do not be like those who are senseless.

Make the most of the present time, for this is a wicked age.

Do not be foolish, but recognize what is the will of the Lord.

Do not get drunk on wine, which can lead to debauchery. Rather, be filled with the Spirit,

as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with one another. Sing and chant to the Lord in your hearts,

giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Wives, be subject to your husbands as you are to the Lord.

For the husband is the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head of the Church, the body of which he is the Savior.

Just as the Church is subject to Christ, so also wives must be subject to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her

in order to sanctify her by cleansing her with water and the word,

in order to present the Church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such flaw, but holy and without the slightest blemish.

In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies. The man who loves his wife loves himself.

For no one ever hates his own body; rather, he nourishes it and cares for it, even as Christ does for the Church,

because we are members of his body.

For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.

This is a great mystery. Here I am applying it to Christ and the Church.

However, each one of you should love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife should respect her husband.

You are God’s children whom he loves, so try to be like him.

Live a life of love just as Christ loved us and gave himself for us as a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice to God.

But there must be no sexual sin among you, or any kind of evil or greed. Those things are not right for God’s holy people.

Also, there must be no evil talk among you, and you must not speak foolishly or tell evil jokes. These things are not right for you. Instead, you should be giving thanks to God.

You can be sure of this: No one will have a place in the kingdom of Christ and of God who sins sexually, or does evil things, or is greedy. Anyone who is greedy is serving a false god.

Do not let anyone fool you by telling you things that are not true, because these things will bring God’s anger on those who do not obey him.

So have nothing to do with them.

In the past you were full of darkness, but now you are full of light in the Lord. So live like children who belong to the light.

Light brings every kind of goodness, right living, and truth.

Try to learn what pleases the Lord.

Have nothing to do with the things done in darkness, which are not worth anything. But show that they are wrong.

It is shameful even to talk about what those people do in secret.

But the light makes all things easy to see,

and everything that is made easy to see can become light. This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper! Rise from death, and Christ will shine on you.”

So be very careful how you live. Do not live like those who are not wise, but live wisely.

Use every chance you have for doing good, because these are evil times.

So do not be foolish but learn what the Lord wants you to do.

Do not be drunk with wine, which will ruin you, but be filled with the Spirit.

Speak to each other with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your hearts to the Lord.

Always give thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Yield to obey each other as you would to Christ.

Wives, yield to your husbands, as you do to the Lord,

because the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church. And he is the Savior of the body, which is the church.

As the church yields to Christ, so you wives should yield to your husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it

to make it belong to God. Christ used the word to make the church clean by washing it with water.

He died so that he could give the church to himself like a bride in all her beauty. He died so that the church could be pure and without fault, with no evil or sin or any other wrong thing in it.

In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they love their own bodies. The man who loves his wife loves himself.

No one ever hates his own body, but feeds and takes care of it. And that is what Christ does for the church,

because we are parts of his body.

That secret is very important—I am talking about Christ and the church.

There should not be even a hint of sexual sin among you. Don’t do anything impure. And do not always want more and more. These are not the things God’s holy people should do.

There must not be any bad language or foolish talk or dirty jokes. They are out of place. Instead, you should give thanks.

Here is what you can be sure of. Those who give themselves over to sexual sins are lost. So are people whose lives are impure. The same is true of those who always want more and more. People who do these things might as well worship statues of gods. No one who does them will receive a share in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Don’t let anyone fool you with worthless words. People who say things like that aren’t obeying God. He is angry with them.

So don’t go along with people like that.

At one time you were in the dark. But now you are in the light because of what the Lord has done. Live like children of the light.

The light produces what is completely good, right and true.

Find out what pleases the Lord.

Have nothing to do with the acts of darkness. They don’t produce anything good. Show what they are really like.

It is shameful even to talk about what people who don’t obey do in secret.

But everything the light shines on can be seen. And everything that the light shines on becomes a light.

That is why it is said, “Wake up, sleeper. Rise from the dead. Then Christ will shine on you.”

So be very careful how you live. Do not live like people who aren’t wise. Live like people who are wise.

Make the most of every opportunity. The days are evil.

So don’t be foolish. Instead, understand what the Lord wants.

Don’t fill yourself up with wine. Getting drunk will lead to wild living. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.

Always give thanks to God the Father for everything. Give thanks to him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Follow the lead of one another because of your respect for Christ.

Wives, follow the lead of your own husbands as you follow the Lord.

The husband is the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head of the church. The church is Christ’s body. He is its Savior.

The church follows the lead of Christ. In the same way, wives should follow the lead of their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives. Love them just as Christ loved the church. He gave himself up for her.

He did it to make her holy. He made her clean by washing her with water and the word.

He did it to bring her to himself as a brightly shining church. He wants a church that has no stain or wrinkle or any other flaw. He wants a church that is holy and without blame.

In the same way, husbands should love their wives. They should love them as they love their own bodies. Any man who loves his wife loves himself.

After all, no one ever hated their own body. Instead, they feed and care for their body. And this is what Christ does for the church.

We are parts of his body.

That is a deep mystery. But I’m talking about Christ and the church.

This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Do as God would do. Much-loved children want to do as their fathers do.

Live with love as Christ loved you. He gave Himself for us, a gift on the altar to God which was as a sweet smell to God.

Do not let sex sins or anything sinful be even talked about among those who belong to Christ. Do not always want everything.

Do not be guilty of telling bad stories and of foolish talk. These things are not for you to do. Instead, you are to give thanks for what God has done for you.

Be sure of this! No person who does sex sins or who is not pure will have any part in the holy nation of Christ and of God. The same is true for the person who always wants what other people have. This becomes a god to him.

Do not let anyone lead you in the wrong way with foolish talk. The anger of God comes on such people because they choose to not obey Him.

Have nothing to do with them.

At one time you lived in darkness. Now you are living in the light that comes from the Lord. Live as children who have the light of the Lord in them.

This light gives us truth. It makes us right with God and makes us good.

Learn how to please the Lord.

Have nothing to do with the bad things done in darkness. Instead, show that these things are wrong.

It is a shame even to talk about these things done in secret.

All things can be seen when they are in the light. Everything that can be seen is in the light.

The Holy Writings say, “Wake up, you who are sleeping. Rise from the dead and Christ will give you light.”

So be careful how you live. Live as men who are wise and not foolish.

Make the best use of your time. These are sinful days.

Do not be foolish. Understand what the Lord wants you to do.

Do not get drunk with wine. That leads to wild living. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Tell of your joy to each other by singing the Songs of David and church songs. Sing in your heart to the Lord.

Always give thanks for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Be willing to help and care for each other because of Christ. By doing this, you honor Christ.

Wives, obey your own husbands. In doing this, you obey the Lord.

For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. It is His body (the church) that He saves.

As the church is to obey Christ, wives are to obey their own husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives. You must love them as Christ loved the church. He gave His life for it.

Christ did this so He could set the church apart for Himself. He made it clean by the washing of water with the Word.

Christ did this so the church might stand before Him in shining-greatness. There is to be no sin of any kind in it. It is to be holy and without blame.

So men should love their wives as they love their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

No man hates himself. He takes care of his own body. That is the way Christ does. He cares for His body which is the church.

We are all a part of His body, the church.

For this reason, a man must leave his father and mother when he gets married and be joined to his wife. The two become one.

This is hard to understand, but it shows that the church is the body of Christ.

So every man must love his wife as he loves himself. Every wife must respect her husband.

Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children.

Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.

Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people.

Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God.

You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.

Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him.

Don’t participate in the things these people do.

For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!

For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.

Carefully determine what pleases the Lord.

Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them.

It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret.

But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them,

for the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said, “Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”

So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise.

Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.

Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.

Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,

singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts.

And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord.

For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church.

As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything.

For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her

to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word.

He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault.

In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself.

No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church.

And we are members of his body.

As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.”

This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one.

So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Be followers of God as dear children,

and walk in love, even as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice of a sweet savour to God.

As for fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let them not be once named among you, as it becomes saints.

Nor should there be coarseness, or foolish talking, or jestings which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.

Don’t let anyone fool you with empty words. It’s because of these things, you see, that God’s wrath is coming on people who are disobedient.

So don’t share in their practices.

After all, at one time you were darkness, but now, in the Lord, you are light! So behave as children of light.

Light has its fruit, doesn’t it, in everything that’s good, and just, and true.

Think through what’s going to be pleasing to the Lord. Work it out.

So, then, don’t get involved in the works of darkness, which all come to nothing. Instead, expose them!

The things they do in secret, you see, are shameful even to talk about.

But everything becomes visible when it’s exposed to the light,

since everything that is visible is light. That’s why it says: Wake up, you sleeper! Rise up from the dead! The Messiah will shine on you!

So take special care how you conduct yourselves. Don’t be unwise, but be wise.

Make use of any opportunity you have, because these are wicked times we live in.

So don’t be foolish; rather, understand what the Lord’s will is.

And don’t get drunk with wine; that way lies dissipation. Rather, be filled with the spirit!

Speak to each other in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and chanting in your heart to the Lord,

always giving thanks for everything to God the father in the name of our Lord Jesus the Messiah.

Be subject to one another out of reverence for the Messiah.

Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

The man, you see, is the head of the woman, just as the Messiah, too, is head of the church. He is himself the savior of the body.

But, just as the church is subject to the Messiah, in the same way women should be subject in everything to their husbands.

Husbands, love your wives, as the Messiah loved the church, and gave himself for it,

so that he could make it holy, cleansing it by washing it with water through the word.

He did this in order to present the church to himself in brilliant splendor, without a single spot or blemish or anything of the kind—that it might be holy and without blame.

That’s how husbands ought to love their own wives, just as they love their own bodies. Someone who loves his wife loves himself.

After all, nobody ever hates his own flesh: he feeds it and takes care of it, just as the Messiah does with the church,

because we are parts of his body.

“That’s why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two become one flesh.”

The hidden meaning in this saying is very deep; but I am reading it as referring to the Messiah and the church.

Anyway, each one of you must love your wife as you love yourself; and the wife must see that she respects her husband.

Therefore, be imitators of Hashem as beloved yeladim,

And fier zich (comport oneself) in your derech in ahavah, as also Moshiach had ahavah for us and gave Himself up on behalf of us as a korban and zevach to Hashem for a RE’ACH HANNICHOACH ("a pleasant aroma" BERESHIS 8:21).

But do not let zenut (fornication) or anything of tumah (uncleanness) or chamdanut (covetousness) even be named among you, as is proper for Kadoshim.

And also let there be nothing that is an ERVAT DAVAR (indecent thing) or the tipshus (foolery) or foolish talking of letzim (coarse jesting) or shtiklech (misconduct), which are not fitting, but rather hodayah (thanksgiving).

For of this you have da’as vada (with certainty), that every zoneh (fornicator) or impure person or covetous person (chamdanut is avodah zarah, avodah elilim) does not have a nachalah in the Malchut of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach and of Hashem.

Let no one deceive you with empty dvarim. For, because of these things the Charon Af Hashem comes upon the Bnei HaMeri (sons of Rebellion).

Therefore, do not be shuttafim (partners) with them.

For you were once Choshech, but now you are Ohr (Light) in Hashem. Fier zich (comport oneself) in your derech as yeladim of HaOhr.

For the p’ri HaOhr is in doing chesed and tzedek and emes,

Proving that which is well-pleasing be’einei Hashem (in the eyes of G-d).

And do not involve yourself in the ma’asei haChoshech (works of darkness), those works without p’ri; but rather even expose them.

For as to the things being done by them under cover of secrecy, it brings bushah (shame) and is a bizayon (disgrace) even to speak of them.

But everything being exposed by HaOhr (Light) becomes visible,

For everything becoming visible is HaOhr (Light); therefore here is the meaning of these words, KUMI, ("Rise up!" YESHAYAH 51:17; 60:1), sleeper, and arise from the MESIM” YESHAYAH 26:19) AND Moshiach WILL SHINE ON YOU (YESHAYAH 60:1 2). [MALACHI 4:2]

Therefore, fier zich (comport oneself) in your derech with a careful walk, not as kesilim (fools) but as chachamim (wise ones),

Redeeming the time, because the yamim are ra’im.

Therefore, do not be foolish, but have binah of what the ratzon Hashem is.

And do not become a shikker with schnapps, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Ruach Hakodesh, [VAYIKRA 10:9; MISHLE 20:1; YESHAYAH 28:7]

Speaking to one another in Tehillim and shirim and hymns and neshamah niggunim mi Ruach Hakodesh (soul melodies from the Ruach Hakodesh), singing and making melody in your levavot to Adonoi, [TEHILLIM 27:6]

Giving todot always for everything to Eloheinu, even Avinu b’Shem Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Yehoshua, [IYOV 1:21; TEHILLIM 34:1]

Being submissive to one another in the yirat HaMoshiach.

Nashim (wives), make yourselves accountable to your ba’alim (husbands) as to Adoneinu, [BERESHIS 3:16]

Because a ba’al (husband) is rosh of the isha as also Moshiach is rosh of the Brit Chadasha Kehillah, being Himself the Go’el (Savior) of HaGuf (the Body of Moshiach). [BERESHIS 47:18; TEHILLIM 16:9-10; IYOV 19:25-27; YESHAYAH 53:11]

But as the Brit Chadasha Kehillah is accountable to Moshiach, so also the nashim should be to their ba’alim in everything.

Ba’alim, have ahavah for your nashim, as also Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach has ahavah for the Brit Chadasha Kehillah and gave Himself up on behalf of her,

That He might bring her to kedushah, having given her tohorah (purification) by the tevilah of the mikveh mayim of the Dvar Hashem,

Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord.

For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.

As the church is subject to Christ, so let wives also be subject in everything to their husbands.

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,

that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,

that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

Even so husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

For no man ever hates his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, as Christ does the church,

because we are members of his body.

“For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”

This mystery is a profound one, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church;

however, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.

And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

But immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is fitting among saints.

Let there be no filthiness, nor silly talk, nor levity, which are not fitting; but instead let there be thanksgiving.

Be sure of this, that no immoral or impure man, or one who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for it is because of these things that the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

Therefore do not associate with them,

for once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light

(for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true),

and try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.

Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.

For it is a shame even to speak of the things that they do in secret;

but when anything is exposed by the light it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light.

Therefore it is said, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light.”

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise,

making the most of the time, because the days are evil.

Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit,

addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart,

always and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.

This is a great mystery, and I mean in reference to Christ and the church;

however, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

and walk in love, just as Messiah also loved us and gave Himself up for us as an offering and sacrifice to God for a fragrant aroma.

But sexual immorality and any impurity or greed—don’t even let these be mentioned among you, as is proper for kedoshim.

Obscene, coarse, and stupid talk are also out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.

Know for certain that no immoral, indecent, or greedy person—who is really an idol worshipper at heart—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Messiah and God.

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s judgment comes on the children of disobedience.

Therefore do not be partners with them.

For once you were darkness, but now in union with the Lord you are light. Walk as children of light

(for the fruit of light is in all goodness and righteousness and truth),

trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.

Take no part in the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them—

for it is disgraceful even to mention the things that are done by them in secret.

Yet everything exposed by the light is being made visible,

for everything made visible is light. This is why it says, “Wake up, O sleeper! Rise from the dead, and Messiah will shine on you.”

So pay close attention to how you walk—not as unwise people but as wise.

Make the most of your time because the days are evil.

For this reason do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

And do not get drunk on wine, for that is recklessness. Instead, be filled with the Ruach,

speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your heart to the Lord—

always giving thanks for everything to God the Father, in the name of the Lord Yeshua the Messiah.

Also submit yourselves to one another out of reverence for Messiah—

wives to your own husbands as to the Lord.

For the husband is head of the wife, as Messiah also is head of His community—Himself the Savior of the body.

But as Messiah’s community is submitted to Messiah, so also the wives to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives just as Messiah also loved His community and gave Himself up for her

to make her holy, having cleansed her by immersion in the word.

Messiah did this so that He might present to Himself His glorious community—not having stain or wrinkle or any such thing, but in order that she might be holy and blameless.

In the same way, husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it—just as Messiah also does His community,

because we are members of His body.

This mystery is great—but I am talking about Messiah and His community.

In any case, let each of you love his own wife as himself, and let the wife respect her husband.

So imitate God. Follow Him like adored children,

and live in love as the Anointed One loved you—so much that He gave Himself as a fragrant sacrifice, pleasing God.

Listen, don’t let any kind of immorality be breathed among you. Any demoralizing behaviors (perverse sexual acts, uncleanliness, greediness, and the like) are inappropriate topics of conversation for those set apart as God’s people.

Don’t swear or spurt nonsense. Don’t make harsh jokes or clown around. Make proper use of your words, and offer them thankfully in praise.

This is what we know for certain: no one who engages in loose sex, impure actions, and greed—which is just a form of idolatry—has any inheritance in the kingdom of God and His Anointed.

Don’t be fooled by people whose sentences are compounded with useless words, empty words—they just show they are empty souls. For, in His wrath, God will judge all the children of disobedience for these kinds of sins.

So don’t be persuaded into their ignorance; and don’t cast your lot with them
