Psalm 38

Do Not Forsake Me, O Yahweh

A Psalm of David. To bring to remembrance.

38 O Yahweh, (A)reprove me not in Your wrath,
And discipline me not in Your burning anger.
For Your (B)arrows have pressed deep into me,
And (C)Your hand has pressed down upon me.
There is (D)no soundness in my flesh (E)because of Your indignation;
There is no health (F)in my bones because of my sin.
For my (G)iniquities go over my head;
As a heavy burden they weigh too much for me.
My [a]wounds stink and rot
Because of (H)my [b]folly.
I am bent over and (I)greatly bowed down;
I (J)go mourning all day long.
For my loins are filled with (K)burning,
And there is (L)no soundness in my flesh.
I am (M)faint and [c]badly crushed;
I [d](N)groan because of the [e]agitation of my heart.

Lord, all (O)my desire is [f]before You;
And my (P)sighing is not hidden from You.
10 My heart throbs, (Q)my strength forsakes me;
And the (R)light of my eyes, even [g]that [h]has gone from me.
11 My [i](S)loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague;
And my kinsmen (T)stand afar off.
12 Those who (U)search for my life (V)lay snares for me;
And those who (W)seek [j]to do me evil have [k]threatened destruction,
And they (X)meditate on deception all day long.

13 But I, like a deaf man, do not hear;
And I am like a (Y)mute man who does not open his mouth.
14 And I am like a man who does not hear,
And in whose mouth are no reproofs.
15 For (Z)I [l]wait on You, O Yahweh;
You (AA)will answer, O Lord my God.
16 For I said, “Save, lest they be glad over me,
Who, when my foot stumbles, (AB)magnify themselves against me.”
17 For I am (AC)ready to fall,
And (AD)my [m]sorrow is continually before me.
18 For I [n](AE)confess my iniquity;
I am full of (AF)anxiety because of my sin.
19 But my (AG)enemies are vigorous and [o]strong,
And those who wrongfully (AH)hate me abound.
20 And those who (AI)repay evil for good,
They (AJ)accuse me, for I pursue what is good.
21 Do not forsake me, O Yahweh;
O my God, (AK)do not be far from me!
22 Make (AL)haste to help me,
O Lord, (AM)my salvation!

Genesis 33:1-17

Jacob Meets Esau

33 Then Jacob lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, (A)Esau was coming, and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children [a]among Leah and Rachel and the two servant-women. And he put the servant-women and their children first, and Leah and her children after them, and Rachel and Joseph after them. But he himself passed on ahead of them and (B)bowed down to the ground seven times, until he (C)came near to his brother.

Then Esau ran to meet him and embraced him and (D)fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. And he lifted up his eyes and saw the women and the children and said, “[b]Who are these with you?” And he said, “(E)The children whom God has graciously given your servant.” Then the servant-women came near [c]with their children, and they bowed down. Leah likewise came near with her children, and they bowed down; and afterward Joseph came near with Rachel, and they bowed down. And he said, “What do you mean by (F)all [d]these camps which I have met?” And he said, “(G)To find favor in the sight of my lord.” But Esau said, “(H)I have plenty, my brother; let what you have be your own.” 10 And Jacob said, “No, please, if now I have found favor in your sight, then take my present from my hand, [e]for I see your face as one sees the face of God, and you have received me favorably. 11 Please take my (I)blessing which has been brought to you, (J)because God has dealt graciously with me and because I have [f]everything.” Thus he urged him, and he took it.

12 Then [g]Esau said, “Let us take our journey and go, and I will go before you.” 13 But he said to him, “My lord knows that the children are weak and that the flocks and herds which are nursing are [h]a care to me. And if they are driven hard one day, all the flocks will die. 14 Please let my lord pass on before his servant, and I will lead on slowly, according to the pace of the cattle that are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come to my lord at (K)Seir.”

15 Then Esau said, “Please let me leave with you some of the people who are with me.” But he said, “Why do this? (L)Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.” 16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir. 17 But Jacob journeyed to [i](M)Succoth and built for himself a house and made booths for his livestock; therefore the place is named Succoth.

1 Corinthians 11:2-16

Head Coverings

Now (A)I praise you because you (B)remember me in everything and (C)hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you. But I want you to understand that [a]Christ is the (D)head of every man, and (E)the man is the head of a woman, and God is the (F)head of [b]Christ. Every man who has something on his head while praying or (G)prophesying, shames his head. But every (H)woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying, shames her head, for she is one and the same as the woman [c]whose head is (I)shaved. For if a woman does not cover [d]her head, let her also [e]have her hair cut short. But if it is disgraceful for a woman to [f]have her hair cut short or [g]her head shaved, let her cover [h]her head. For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the (J)image and glory of God, but the woman is the glory of man. For (K)man [i]does not originate from woman, but woman from man. For indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but (L)woman for the man’s sake. 10 Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord, neither is woman [j]independent of man, nor is man [k]independent of woman. 12 For as the woman [l]originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman, but (M)all things [m]originate (N)from God. 13 (O)Judge [n]for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering. 16 But if one is inclined to be contentious, (P)we have no [o]other practice, nor have (Q)the churches of God.
