Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
34 Then Samuel went to (A)Ramah, but Saul went up to his house at (B)Gibeah of Saul. 35 (C)So Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death; for Samuel (D)grieved over Saul. And Yahweh regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.
David Anointed King
16 Then Yahweh said to Samuel, “(E)How long will you be grieving over Saul? (F)I have rejected him from being king over Israel. (G)Fill your horn with oil and go; I will send you to (H)Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I (I)see among his sons a king for Me.” 2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? Saul will hear of it and will kill me.” Then Yahweh said, “(J)Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh.’ 3 And you shall invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and (K)I will make you know what you shall do; and (L)you shall anoint for Me the one whom I say to you.” 4 So Samuel did what Yahweh said and came to (M)Bethlehem. And the elders of the city came trembling to meet him and said, “(N)Do you come in peace?” 5 And he said, “In peace; I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. (O)Set yourselves apart as holy and come with me to the sacrifice.” He also set apart Jesse and his sons as holy and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 Now it happened, when they entered, he looked at (P)Eliab and thought, “Surely the anointed of Yahweh is before Him.” 7 But Yahweh said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for [a]God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, (Q)but Yahweh looks at the heart.” 8 Then Jesse called (R)Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Yahweh has not chosen this one either.” 9 Next Jesse made [b](S)Shammah pass by. And he said, “Yahweh has not chosen this one either.” 10 Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, “Yahweh has not chosen these.” 11 And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are these all the young men?” And he said, “(T)There remains yet the youngest, and behold, he is shepherding the sheep.” Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and [c]bring him, for we will not turn around until he comes here.” 12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with (U)beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And Yahweh said, “(V)Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and (W)anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and (X)the Spirit of Yahweh [d]came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
We Will Boast in the Name of Yahweh
For the choir director. A Psalm of David.
20 May Yahweh answer you (A)in the day of distress!
May the (B)name of the (C)God of Jacob set you securely on high!
2 May He send you help (D)from the sanctuary
And (E)uphold you from Zion!
3 May He (F)remember all your meal offerings
And (G)find your burnt offering [a]acceptable! [b]Selah.
4 May He grant you your (H)heart’s desire
And (I)fulfill all your [c]counsel!
5 [d]We will (J)sing for joy over your salvation,
And in the name of our God we will (K)set up our banners.
May Yahweh (L)fulfill all your petitions.
6 Now (M)I know that Yahweh saves His anointed;
He will (N)answer him from His holy heaven
With the [e](O)saving might of His right hand.
7 Some boast in chariots and some in (P)horses,
But (Q)we will [f]boast in the name of Yahweh, our God.
8 They have (R)bowed down and fallen,
But we have (S)risen and stood upright.
9 [g](T)Save, O Yahweh;
May the (U)King answer us in the day we call.
6 Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that (A)while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord— 7 for (B)we walk by faith, not by [a]sight— 8 we are of good courage and (C)prefer rather to be absent from the body and (D)to be at home with the Lord. 9 Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be (E)pleasing to Him. 10 For we must all appear before (F)the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for [b]his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
11 So then, knowing the (A)fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we [a]have been made manifest to God; and I hope that we [b]have been (B)made manifest also in your consciences. 12 We are not (C)again commending ourselves to you but are giving you an (D)opportunity to boast of us, so that you will have an answer for those who boast in appearance and not in heart. 13 For if we [c]are (E)out of our mind, it is for God, or if we are of right mind, it is for you.
14 For the love of Christ (A)controls us, having concluded this, that (B)one died for all, therefore all died. 15 And He died for all, so that they who live would no longer (C)live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.
16 Therefore from now on we recognize no one [a](D)according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ [b]according to the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer. 17 Therefore if anyone is (E)in Christ, he is (F)a new creation; (G)the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
The Parable of the Seed
26 And He was saying, “The kingdom of God is like a man who casts seed upon the soil; 27 and he sleeps and rises, night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows—how, he himself does not know. 28 The soil produces crops by itself; first the blade, then the head, then the mature grain in the head. 29 But when the grain [a]is ripe, he immediately [b](A)puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
The Parable of the Mustard Seed
30 (B)And He was saying, “How shall we (C)compare the kingdom of God, or by what parable shall we present it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the soil, though it is [c]smallest of all the seeds that are upon the soil, 32 yet when it is sown, it grows up and becomes [d]largest of all the garden plants and forms large branches; so that (D)the birds of the [e]air can nest under its shade.”
33 And with many such parables He was speaking the word to them, as they were able to hear it; 34 and He was not speaking to them (E)without a parable; but He was (F)explaining everything privately to His own disciples.
