Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 78[a]
A well-written song[b] by Asaph.
78 Pay attention, my people, to my instruction.
Listen to the words I speak.[c]
2 I will sing a song that imparts wisdom;
I will make insightful observations about the past.[d]
3 What we have heard and learned[e]—
that which our ancestors[f] have told us—
4 we will not hide from their[g] descendants.
We will tell the next generation
about the Lord’s praiseworthy acts,[h]
about his strength and the amazing things he has done.
12 He did amazing things in the sight of their ancestors,
in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan.[a]
13 He divided the sea and led them across it;
he made the water stand in a heap.
14 He led them with a cloud by day,
and with the light of a fire all night long.
15 He broke open rocks in the wilderness,
and gave them enough water to fill the depths of the sea.[b]
16 He caused streams to flow from the rock,
and made the water flow like rivers.
17 This is what the Lord, your Protector,[a] says,
the Holy One of Israel:[b]
“I am the Lord your God,
who teaches you how to succeed,
who leads you in the way you should go.
18 If only you had obeyed my[c] commandments,
prosperity would have flowed to you like a river,[d]
deliverance would have come to you like the waves of the sea.[e]
19 Your descendants would have been as numerous as sand,[f]
and your children[g] like its granules.
Their name would not have been cut off
and eliminated from my presence.[h]
20 Leave Babylon!
Flee from the Babylonians!
Announce it with a shout of joy!
Make this known—
proclaim it throughout the earth![i]
Say, ‘The Lord protects[j] his servant Jacob.
21 They do not thirst as he leads them through dry regions;
he makes water flow out of a rock for them;
he splits open a rock and water flows out.’[k]
11 Do not speak against one another, brothers and sisters.[a] He who speaks against a fellow believer[b] or judges a fellow believer speaks against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but its judge.[c] 12 But there is only one who is lawgiver and judge—the one who is able to save and destroy. On the other hand, who are you to judge your neighbor?[d]
13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into this or that town[e] and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.” 14 You[f] do not know about tomorrow. What is your life like?[g] For you are a puff of smoke[h] that appears for a short time and then vanishes. 15 You ought to say instead,[i] “If the Lord is willing, then we will live and do this or that.” 16 But as it is,[j] you boast about your arrogant plans.[k] All such boasting is evil.
