Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 149[a]
149 Praise the Lord.
Sing to the Lord a new song.
Praise him in the assembly of the godly.[b]
2 Let Israel rejoice in their Creator.
Let the people[c] of Zion delight in their King.[d]
3 Let them praise his name with dancing.
Let them sing praises to him to the accompaniment of the tambourine and harp.
4 For the Lord takes delight in his people;
he exalts the oppressed by delivering them.[e]
5 Let the godly rejoice because of their vindication.[f]
Let them shout for joy upon their beds.[g]
6 May the praises of God be in their mouths
and a two-edged sword in their hands,
7 in order to take[h] revenge on the nations,
and punish foreigners.
8 The godly bind[i] their enemies’ kings in chains,
and their nobles in iron shackles,
9 and execute the judgment to which their enemies[j] have been sentenced.[k]
All his loyal followers will be vindicated.[l]
Praise the Lord.
Plague Nine: Darkness
21 [a] The Lord said to Moses, “Extend your hand toward heaven[b] so that there may be[c] darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness so thick it can be felt.”[d]
22 So Moses extended his hand toward heaven, and there was absolute darkness[e] throughout the land of Egypt for three days.[f] 23 No one[g] could see[h] another person, and no one could rise from his place for three days. But the Israelites had light in the places where they lived.
24 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, “Go, serve the Lord—only your flocks and herds will be detained. Even your families[i] may go with you.”
25 But Moses said, “Will you also[j] provide us[k] with sacrifices and burnt offerings that we may present them[l] to the Lord our God? 26 Our livestock must[m] also go with us! Not a hoof is to be left behind! For we must take[n] these animals[o] to serve the Lord our God. Until we arrive there, we do not know what we must use to serve the Lord.”[p]
27 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he was not willing to release them. 28 Pharaoh said to him, “Go from me![q] Watch out for yourself! Do not appear before me again,[r] for when[s] you see my face you will die!” 29 Moses said, “As you wish![t] I will not see your face again.”[u]
15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How timely[a] is the arrival[b] of those who proclaim the good news.”[c] 16 But not all have obeyed the good news, for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?”[d] 17 Consequently faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the preached word[e] of Christ.[f]
18 But I ask, have they[g] not heard?[h] Yes, they have:[i] Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.[j] 19 But again I ask, didn’t Israel understand?[k] First Moses says, “I will make you jealous by those who are not a nation; with a senseless nation I will provoke you to anger.”[l] 20 And Isaiah is even bold enough to say, “I was found by those who did not seek me; I became well known to those who did not ask for me.”[m] 21 But about Israel he says, “All day long I held out my hands to this disobedient and stubborn people!”[n]
