19 The angel of God, who was going before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them, and the pillar[a] of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them. 20 It came between the Egyptian camp and the Israelite camp; it was a dark cloud[b] and it lit up the night so that one camp did not come near the other[c] the whole night.[d] 21 Moses stretched out his hand toward the sea, and the Lord drove the sea apart[e] by a strong east wind all that night, and he made the sea into dry land, and the water was divided. 22 So the Israelites went through the middle of the sea on dry ground, the water forming a wall[f] for them on their right and on their left.
23 The Egyptians chased them and followed them into the middle of the sea—all the horses of Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen. 24 In the morning watch[g] the Lord looked down[h] on the Egyptian army[i] through the pillar of fire and cloud, and he threw the Egyptian army[j] into a panic.[k] 25 He jammed[l] the wheels of their chariots so that they had difficulty driving,[m] and the Egyptians said, “Let’s flee[n] from Israel, for the Lord fights[o] for them against Egypt!”
26 The Lord said to Moses, “Extend your hand toward the sea, so that the waters may flow back[p] on the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen!” 27 So Moses extended his hand toward the sea, and the sea returned to its normal state[q] when the sun began to rise.[r] Now the Egyptians were fleeing[s] before it, but the Lord overthrew[t] the Egyptians in the middle of the sea. 28 The water returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen and all the army of Pharaoh that was coming after the Israelites into the sea[u]—not so much as one of them survived![v] 29 But the Israelites walked on dry ground in the middle of the sea, the water forming a wall for them on their right and on their left. 30 So the Lord saved[w] Israel on that day from the power[x] of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead[y] on the shore of the sea. 31 When Israel saw[z] the great power[aa] that the Lord had exercised[ab] over the Egyptians, they[ac] feared the Lord, and they believed in[ad] the Lord and in his servant Moses.[ae]
Psalm 114[a]
114 When Israel left Egypt,
when the family of Jacob left a foreign nation behind,[b]
2 Judah became his sanctuary,
Israel his kingdom.
3 The sea looked and fled;[c]
the Jordan River[d] turned back.[e]
4 The mountains skipped like rams,
the hills like lambs.[f]
5 Why do you flee, O sea?
Why do you turn back, O Jordan River?
6 Why do you skip like rams, O mountains,
like lambs, O hills?
7 Tremble, O earth, before the Lord—
before the God of Jacob,
8 who turned a rock into a pool of water,
a hard rock into springs of water.[g]
The Song of Triumph
15 [a] Then Moses and the Israelites sang[b] this song to the Lord. They said,[c]
“I will sing[d] to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously,[e]
the horse and its rider[f] he has thrown into the sea.
2 The Lord[g] is my strength and my song,[h]
and he has become my salvation.
This is my God, and I will praise him,[i]
my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
3 The Lord is a warrior[j]—
the Lord is his name.[k]
4 The chariots of Pharaoh[l] and his army he has thrown into the sea,
and his chosen[m] officers were drowned[n] in the Red Sea.
5 The depths have covered them;[o]
they went down to the bottom[p] like a stone.
6 Your right hand, O Lord, was majestic[q] in power;
your right hand, O Lord, shattered the enemy.
7 In the abundance of your majesty[r] you have overthrown[s]
those who rise up against you.[t]
You sent forth[u] your wrath;[v]
it consumed them[w] like stubble.
8 By the blast of your nostrils[x] the waters were piled up,
the flowing water stood upright like a heap,[y]
and the deep waters were solidified in the heart of the sea.
9 The enemy said, ‘I will chase,[z] I will overtake,
I will divide the spoil;
my desire[aa] will be satisfied on them.
I will draw[ab] my sword, my hand will destroy them.’[ac]
10 But[ad] you blew with your breath, and[ae] the sea covered them.
They sank[af] like lead in the mighty waters.
11 Who is like you,[ag] O Lord, among the gods?[ah]
Who is like you—majestic in holiness, fearful in praises,[ai] working wonders?
Exhortation to Mutual Forbearance
14 Now receive the one who is weak in the faith, and do not have disputes over differing opinions.[a] 2 One person believes in eating everything, but the weak person eats only vegetables. 3 The one who eats everything must not despise the one who does not, and the one who abstains must not judge the one who eats everything, for God has accepted him. 4 Who are you to pass judgment on another’s servant? Before his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord[b] is able to make him stand.
5 One person regards one day holier than other days, and another regards them all alike.[c] Each must be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who observes the day does it for the Lord. The[d] one who eats, eats for the Lord because he gives thanks to God, and the one who abstains from eating abstains for the Lord, and he gives thanks to God. 7 For none of us lives for himself and none dies for himself. 8 If we live, we live for the Lord; if we die, we die for the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. 9 For this reason Christ died and returned to life, so that he may be the Lord of both the dead and the living.
10 But you who eat vegetables only—why do you judge your brother or sister?[e] And you who eat everything—why do you despise your brother or sister?[f] For we will all stand before the judgment seat[g] of God. 11 For it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow to me, and every tongue will give praise to God.”[h] 12 Therefore, each of us will give an account of himself to God.[i]
21 Then Peter came to him and said, “Lord, how many times must I forgive my brother[a] who sins against me? As many as seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “Not seven times, I tell you, but seventy-seven times![b]
The Parable of the Unforgiving Slave
23 “For this reason, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his slaves.[c] 24 As[d] he began settling his accounts, a man who owed 10,000 talents[e] was brought to him. 25 Because[f] he was not able to repay it,[g] the lord ordered him to be sold, along with[h] his wife, children, and whatever he possessed, and repayment to be made. 26 Then the slave threw himself to the ground[i] before him, saying,[j] ‘Be patient with me, and I will repay you everything.’ 27 The lord had compassion on that slave and released him, and forgave him the debt. 28 After[k] he went out, that same slave found one of his fellow slaves who owed him 100 silver coins.[l] So[m] he grabbed him by the throat and started to choke him,[n] saying, ‘Pay back what you owe me!’[o] 29 Then his fellow slave threw himself down and begged him,[p] ‘Be patient with me, and I will repay you.’ 30 But he refused. Instead, he went out and threw him in prison until he repaid the debt. 31 When[q] his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were very upset and went and told their lord everything that had taken place. 32 Then his lord called the first slave[r] and said to him, ‘Evil slave! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me! 33 Should you not have shown mercy to your fellow slave, just as I showed it to you?’ 34 And in anger his lord turned him over to the prison guards to torture him[s] until he repaid all he owed. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to you, if each of you does not forgive your[t] brother[u] from your heart.”
