Psalm 115

Heathen Idols Contrasted with the Lord.

115 (A)Not to us, O Lord, not to us,
But (B)to Your name give glory
Because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your [a]truth.
(C)Why should the nations say,
(D)Where, now, is their God?”
But our (E)God is in the heavens;
He (F)does whatever He pleases.
Their (G)idols are silver and gold,
The (H)work of man’s hands.
They have mouths, but they (I)cannot speak;
They have eyes, but they cannot see;
They have ears, but they cannot hear;
They have noses, but they cannot smell;
[b]They have hands, but they cannot feel;
[c]They have feet, but they cannot walk;
They cannot make a sound with their throat.
(J)Those who make them [d]will become like them,
Everyone who trusts in them.

O (K)Israel, (L)trust in the Lord;
He is their (M)help and their shield.
10 O house of (N)Aaron, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.
11 You who [e](O)fear the Lord, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.
12 The Lord (P)has been mindful of us; He will bless us;
He will bless the house of Israel;
He will bless the house of Aaron.
13 He will (Q)bless those who [f]fear the Lord,
(R)The small together with the great.
14 May the Lord (S)give you increase,
You and your children.
15 May you be blessed of the Lord,
(T)Maker of heaven and earth.

16 The heavens are (U)the heavens of the Lord,
But (V)the earth He has given to the sons of men.
17 The (W)dead do not praise [g]the Lord,
Nor do any who go down into (X)silence;
18 But as for us, we will (Y)bless [h]the Lord
From this time forth and forever.
[i]Praise [j]the Lord!

Isaiah 8:1-15

Damascus and Samaria Fall

Then the Lord said to me, “Take for yourself a large tablet and (A)write on it [a]in ordinary letters: [b](B)Swift is the booty, speedy is the prey. And [c]I will take to Myself faithful witnesses for testimony, (C)Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.” So I approached the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Name him [d](D)Maher-shalal-hash-baz; for (E)before the boy knows how to cry out ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of (F)Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria.”

Again the Lord spoke to me further, saying,

“Inasmuch as these people have (G)rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah
And rejoice in (H)Rezin and the son of Remaliah;
“Now therefore, behold, the Lord is about to bring on them the (I)strong and abundant waters of the [e](J)Euphrates,
Even the (K)king of Assyria and all his glory;
And it will (L)rise up over all its channels and go over all its banks.
“Then (M)it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass through,
It will (N)reach even to the neck;
And the spread of its wings will [f]fill the breadth of [g]your land, O (O)Immanuel.

A Believing Remnant

(P)Be broken, O peoples, and be [h](Q)shattered;
And give ear, all remote places of the earth.
Gird yourselves, yet be [i]shattered;
Gird yourselves, yet be [j]shattered.
10 (R)Devise a plan, but it will be thwarted;
State a [k]proposal, but (S)it will not stand,
For [l](T)God is with us.”

11 For thus the Lord spoke to me [m]with (U)mighty power and instructed me (V)not to walk in the way of this people, saying,

12 “You are not to say, ‘It is a (W)conspiracy!’
In regard to all that this people call a conspiracy,
And (X)you are not to fear [n]what they fear or be in dread of it.
13 “It is the (Y)Lord of hosts (Z)whom you should regard as holy.
And He shall be your fear,
And He shall be your dread.
14 “Then He shall become a (AA)sanctuary;
But to both the houses of Israel, a (AB)stone to strike and a rock to stumble over,
And a snare and a (AC)trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15 “Many (AD)will stumble over them,
Then they will fall and be broken;
They will even be snared and caught.”

Luke 5:27-32

Call of Levi (Matthew)

27 (A)After that He went out and noticed a tax collector named [a](B)Levi sitting in the tax booth, and He said to him, “Follow Me.” 28 And he (C)left everything behind, and got up and began to follow Him.

29 And (D)Levi gave a big reception for Him in his house; and there was a great crowd of (E)tax collectors and other people who were reclining at the table with them. 30 (F)The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling at His disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and [b]sinners?” 31 And Jesus answered and said to them, (G)It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”
