The Compassion of the Lord

55 (A)“Come, everyone who thirsts,
    come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
    (B)come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
    without money and without price.
(C)Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
    and your labour for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
    and delight yourselves in rich food.
Incline your ear, and come to me;
    (D)hear, that your soul may live;
(E)and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
    (F)my steadfast, sure love for (G)David.
(H)Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples,
    (I)a leader and commander for the peoples.
(J)Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know,
    and (K)a nation that did not know you shall run to you,
because of the Lord your God, and of the Holy One of Israel,
    (L)for he has glorified you.

Psalm 145:8-9

The Lord is (A)gracious and merciful,
    slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
The Lord is (B)good to all,
    and his mercy is over all that he has made.

Psalm 145:14-21

14 The Lord (A)upholds all who are falling
    and (B)raises up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all (C)look to you,
    and you give them their food in due season.
16 You (D)open your hand;
    you (E)satisfy the desire of every living thing.
17 The Lord is (F)righteous in all his ways
    and (G)kind in all his works.
18 The Lord is (H)near to all who call on him,
    to all who call on him (I)in truth.
19 He (J)fulfils the desire of those who fear him;
    he also (K)hears their cry and saves them.
20 The Lord (L)preserves all who love him,
    but all the wicked he will destroy.
21 My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
    and (M)let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever.

Romans 9:1-5

God's Sovereign Choice

(A)I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For (B)I could wish that I myself were (C)accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers,[a] my kinsmen (D)according to the flesh. They are (E)Israelites, and to them belong (F)the adoption, (G)the glory, (H)the covenants, (I)the giving of the law, (J)the worship, and (K)the promises. To them belong (L)the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ (M)who is God over all, (N)blessed for ever. Amen.

Matthew 14:13-21

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

13 Now when Jesus heard this, (A)he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When he went ashore he (B)saw a great crowd, and (C)he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15 Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; (D)send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16 But Jesus said, “They need not go away; (E)you give them something to eat.” 17 They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” 18 And he said, “Bring them here to me.” 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, (F)he looked up to heaven and (G)said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
