Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
40 1 David delivered from great danger doth magnify and praise the grace of God for his deliverance, and commendeth his providence toward all mankind. 5 Then doth he promise to give himself wholly to God’s service, and so declareth how God is truly worshipped. 14 Afterwards he giveth thanks and praiseth God, and having complained of his enemies, with good courage he calleth for aid and succor.
To him that excelleth. A Psalm of David.
1 I waited [a]patiently for the Lord, and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
2 He brought me also out of the [b]horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon the rock, and ordered my goings.
3 And he hath put in my mouth [c]a new song of praise unto our God: many shall see it and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.
4 Blessed is the man that maketh the Lord his trust, and regardeth [d]not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
5 [e]O Lord my God, thou hast made thy wonderful works so many, that none can count in order to thee thy thoughts toward us: I would declare and speak of them, but they are more than I am able to express.
6 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire: (for [f]mine ears hast thou prepared) burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.
7 [g]Then said I, Lo, I come: for in the roll of the book it is written of me.
8 I desired to do thy good will, O my God: yea, thy Law is within mine heart.
9 I have declared thy righteousness in the [h]great congregation: lo, I will not refrain my lips: O Lord, thou knowest.
10 I have not hid thy righteousness within mine heart, but I have declared thy [i]truth and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy mercy, and thy truth from the great Congregation.
11 Withdraw not thou thy tender mercy from me, O Lord, let thy mercy and thy truth always preserve me.
15 Thus saith the Lord God of hosts, Go, get thee to that [a]treasurer, to Shebna, the steward of the house, and say,
16 What hast thou to do here? and whom hast thou [b]here? that thou shouldest here hew thee out a sepulcher, as he that heweth out his sepulcher in a high place, or that graveth an habitation [c]for himself in a rock?
17 Behold, the Lord will carry thee away with a great captivity, and will surely cover thee.
18 He will surely roll and turn thee like a ball in a large country: there shalt thou die, and there the chariots of thy glory shall be the [d]shame of thy lord’s house.
19 And I will drive thee from thy station, and out of thy dwelling will he destroy thee.
20 And in that day will I [e]call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah,
21 And with thy garments will I clothe him, and with thy girdle will I strengthen him: thy power also will I commit into his hand, and he shall be a father of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and of the house of Judah.
22 And the [f]key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder: so he shall open, and no man shall shut: and he shall shut, and no man shall open.
23 And I will fasten him as a [g]nail in a sure place, and he shall be for the throne of glory to his father’s house.
24 And they shall hang upon him all the glory of his father’s house, even of the nephews and posterity [h]all small vessels, from the vessels of the cups, even to all the instruments of music.
25 In that day saith the Lord of hosts, shall the [i]nail that is fastened in the sure place, depart and shall be broken and fall, and the burden that was upon it, shall be cut off: for the Lord hath spoken it.
6 [a]I marvel that ye are so soon [b]removed away unto another Gospel, from him that had called you in the grace of Christ,
7 [c]Which is not another Gospel, save that there be some which trouble you, and intend to [d]pervert the Gospel of Christ.
8 But though that we, or an Angel from heaven preach unto you otherwise than that which we have preached unto you, let him be [e]accursed.
9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach unto you otherwise than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
10 [f]For now preach I [g]man’s doctrine, or God’s? or go I about to please men? for if I should yet please men, I were not the servant of Christ.
11 (A)[h]Now I certify you, brethren, that the Gospel which was preached of me, was not after man.
12 For neither received I it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the [i]revelation of Jesus Christ.
