Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
72 1 He prayeth for the prosperous estate of the kingdom of Solomon, who was the figure of Christ, 4 under whom shall be righteousness, peace, and felicity. 10 Unto whom all Kings and nations shall do homage, 17 Whose name and power shall endure forever, and in whom all nations shall be blessed.
A Psalm [a]of Solomon.
1 Give thy [b]judgments to the King, O God, and thy righteousness to the King’s [c]son.
2 Then shall he judge thy people in righteousness, and thy poor with equity.
3 The [d]mountains, and the hills shall bring peace to the people by justice.
4 He shall [e]judge the poor of the people: he shall save the children of the needy, and shall subdue the oppressor.
5 They shall [f]fear thee as long as the sun and moon endureth, from generation to generation.
6 He shall come [g]down like the rain upon the mown grass, and as the showers that water the earth.
7 In his days shall the righteous flourish, and abundance of peace shall be so long as the moon endureth.
8 His dominion shall be also from [h]sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the land.
9 They that dwell in the wilderness, shall kneel before him, and his enemies shall lick the dust.
10 The kings of [i]Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings [j]of Sheba and Seba shall bring gifts.
11 Yea, all kings shall worship him: all nations shall serve him.
12 For he shall deliver the poor when he crieth: the needy also, and him that hath no helper.
13 He shall be merciful to the poor and needy, and shall preserve the souls of the poor.
14 He shall redeem their souls from deceit and violence, and [k]dear shall their blood be in his sight.
15 Yea, he shall live, and unto him shall they give of the [l]gold of Sheba: they shall also pray for him continually, and daily bless him.
16 An handful of corn shall be sown in the earth, even in the top of the mountains, and the [m]fruit thereof shalt shake like the trees of Lebanon: and the children shall flourish out of the city like the grass of the earth.
17 His name shall be forever: his name shall endure as long as the Sun: all nations shall bless [n]him, and be blessed in him.
18 Blessed be the Lord God, even the God of Israel which only doeth [o]wondrous things.
19 And blessed be his glorious Name forever: and let all the earth be filled with his glory. So be it, even so be it.
[20] Here end the [p]prayers of David the son of Jesse.
The Book of Joshua
1 2 The Lord encourageth Joshua to invade the land. 4 The borders and limits of the land of the Israelites. 5 The Lord promiseth to assist Joshua, if he obey his word. 11 Joshua commandeth the people to prepare themselves to pass over Jordan, 12 and exhorteth the Reubenites to execute their charge.
1 Now after the [a]death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying,
2 Moses my servant is dead: now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I give them, that is, to the children of Israel.
3 (A)Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, have I given you, as I said unto Moses.
4 (B)From the [b]wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river [c]Perath: all the land of the [d]Hittites, even unto the great [e]Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.
5 There shall not a man be able to withstand thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so will I be with thee: (C)I will not leave thee, nor forsake thee.
6 (D)Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide the land for an inheritance, which I swore unto their fathers to give them.
7 Only be thou strong, and [f]of a most valiant courage, that thou mayest observe and do according to all the Law which Moses my servant hath commanded thee: (E)thou shalt not turn away from it to the right hand, nor to the left, that thou mayest [g]prosper whithersoever thou goest.
8 Let not this book of the Law depart out of thy mouth, but meditate therein day and [h]night, that thou mayest observe and do according to all that is written therein: for then shalt thou make thy way prosperous, and then shalt thou [i]have good success.
9 Have not I commanded thee, saying, Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be discouraged? for I the Lord thy God will be with thee whithersoever thou goest.
32 [a]And what shall I more say? for the time would be too short for me to tell of (A)Gideon, of (B)Barak, and of (C)Samson, and of (D)Jephthah, also of David, and Samuel, and of the Prophets:
33 Which through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained the [b]promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, of weak were made strong, waxed valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
35 The [c]women received their dead raised to life: others also were [d]racked, and would not be delivered, that they might receive a better resurrection.
36 And others have been tried by mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover by bonds, and imprisonment.
37 They were stoned, they were hewn asunder, they were tempted, they were slain with the sword, they wandered up and down in [e]sheep’s skins, and in goats’ skins, being destitute, afflicted, and tormented:
38 Whom the world was not worthy of: they wandered in wildernesses and mountains, and dens, and caves of the earth.
39 [f]And these all through faith obtained good report, and received [g]not the promise,
40 God providing a better thing for us, that they [h]without us should not be made perfect.
12 1 He doth not only by the examples of the Fathers before recited, exhort them to patience and constancy, 3 but also by the example of Christ. 11 That the chastenings of God cannot be rightly judged by the outward sense of our flesh.
1 Wherefore, (E)[i]let us also, seeing that we are compassed with so great a cloud of witnesses, cast away everything that presseth down, and the sin that [j]hangeth so fast on: let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 [k][l]Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, who for the [m]joy that was set before him, endured the cross, and despised the shame, and is set at the right hand of the throne of God.
