Numbers 34

Instruction for Apportioning Canaan

34 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Command the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When you enter (A)the land of Canaan, this is the land that shall fall to you as an inheritance, even the land of Canaan according to its borders. (B)Your southern [a]sector shall [b]extend from the wilderness of Zin along the side of Edom, and your southern border shall [c]extend from the end of the Salt Sea (C)eastward. Then your border shall turn direction from the south to the ascent of Akrabbim and [d]continue to Zin, and its [e]termination shall be to the south of (D)Kadesh-barnea; and it shall [f]reach Hazaraddar and [g]continue to Azmon. The border shall turn direction from Azmon to the brook of Egypt, and its termination shall be at (E)the sea.

‘As for the western border, you shall have the Great Sea, that is, its [h]coastline; this shall be your west border.

(F)And this shall be your north border: you shall draw your border line from the Great Sea to Mount Hor. You shall draw a line from Mount Hor to (G)the [i]Lebo-hamath, and the termination of the border shall be at Zedad; and the border shall proceed to Ziphron, and its termination shall be at Hazar-enan. This shall be your north border.

10 ‘For your eastern border you shall also draw a line from Hazar-enan to Shepham, 11 and the border shall go down from Shepham to (H)Riblah on the east side of Ain; and the border shall go down and reach to the [j]slope on the east side of the Sea of (I)Chinnereth. 12 And the border shall go down to the Jordan and its termination shall be at the Salt Sea. This shall be your land according to its borders all around.’”

13 So Moses commanded the sons of Israel, saying, “(J)This is the land that you are to apportion by lot among you as a possession, which the Lord has commanded to give to the nine and a half tribes. 14 (K)For the tribe of the sons of Reuben have received theirs according to their fathers’ households, and the tribe of the sons of Gad according to their fathers’ households, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their possession. 15 The two and a half tribes have received their possession across the Jordan opposite Jericho, eastward toward the sunrising.”

16 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 17 (L)These are the names of the men who shall apportion the land to you for inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun. 18 You shall take one leader of every tribe to apportion the land for inheritance. 19 These are the names of the men: of the tribe of (M)Judah, (N)Caleb the son of Jephunneh. 20 Of the tribe of the sons of (O)Simeon, Samuel the son of Ammihud. 21 Of the tribe of (P)Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon. 22 Of the tribe of the sons of Dan a leader, Bukki the son of Jogli. 23 Of the sons of Joseph: of the tribe of the sons of Manasseh a leader, Hanniel the son of Ephod. 24 Of the tribe of the sons of Ephraim a leader, Kemuel the son of Shiphtan. 25 Of the tribe of the sons of Zebulun a leader, Elizaphan the son of Parnach. 26 Of the tribe of the sons of Issachar a leader, Paltiel the son of Azzan. 27 Of the tribe of the sons of Asher a leader, Ahihud the son of Shelomi. 28 Of the tribe of the sons of Naphtali a leader, Pedahel the son of Ammihud.” 29 These are those whom the Lord commanded to apportion the inheritance to the sons of Israel in the land of Canaan.

Psalm 78:38-72

38 But He, being (A)compassionate, [a](B)forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them;
And often He [b](C)restrained His anger
And did not arouse all His wrath.
39 Thus (D)He remembered that they were but (E)flesh,
A [c](F)wind that passes and does not return.

40 How often they (G)rebelled against Him in the wilderness
And (H)grieved Him in the (I)desert!
41 Again and again they [d](J)tempted God,
And pained the (K)Holy One of Israel.
42 They (L)did not remember (M)His [e]power,
The day when He (N)redeemed them from the adversary,
43 When He performed His (O)signs in Egypt
And His (P)marvels in the field of Zoan,
44 And (Q)turned their rivers to blood,
And their streams, they could not drink.
45 He sent among them swarms of (R)flies which devoured them,
And (S)frogs which destroyed them.
46 He gave also their crops to the (T)grasshopper
And the product of their labor to the (U)locust.
47 He [f]destroyed their vines with (V)hailstones
And their sycamore trees with frost.
48 He gave over their (W)cattle also to the hailstones
And their herds to bolts of lightning.
49 He (X)sent upon them His burning anger,
Fury and indignation and trouble,
[g]A band of destroying angels.
50 He leveled a path for His anger;
He did not spare their soul from death,
But (Y)gave over their life to the plague,
51 And (Z)smote all the firstborn in Egypt,
The (AA)first issue of their virility in the tents of (AB)Ham.
52 But He (AC)led forth His own people like sheep
And guided them in the wilderness (AD)like a flock;
53 He led them (AE)safely, so that they did not fear;
But (AF)the sea engulfed their enemies.

54 So (AG)He brought them to His holy [h]land,
To this [i](AH)hill country (AI)which His right hand had gained.
55 He also (AJ)drove out the nations before them
And (AK)apportioned them for an inheritance by measurement,
And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.
56 Yet they [j](AL)tempted and (AM)rebelled against the Most High God
And did not keep His testimonies,
57 But turned back and (AN)acted treacherously like their fathers;
They (AO)turned aside like a treacherous bow.
58 For they (AP)provoked Him with their (AQ)high places
And (AR)aroused His jealousy with their (AS)graven images.
59 When God heard, He [k]was filled with (AT)wrath
And greatly (AU)abhorred Israel;
60 So that He (AV)abandoned the (AW)dwelling place at Shiloh,
The tent [l]which He had pitched among men,
61 And gave up His (AX)strength to captivity
And His glory (AY)into the hand of the adversary.
62 He also (AZ)delivered His people to the sword,
And [m]was filled with wrath at His inheritance.
63 (BA)Fire devoured [n]His young men,
And [o]His (BB)virgins had no wedding songs.
64 [p]His (BC)priests fell by the sword,
And [q]His (BD)widows could not weep.

65 Then the Lord (BE)awoke as if from sleep,
Like a (BF)warrior [r]overcome by wine.
66 He [s](BG)drove His adversaries backward;
He put on them an everlasting reproach.
67 He also (BH)rejected the tent of Joseph,
And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
68 But chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount (BI)Zion which He loved.
69 And He (BJ)built His sanctuary like the heights,
Like the earth which He has founded forever.
70 He also (BK)chose David His servant
And took him from the sheepfolds;
71 From [t](BL)the care of the [u]ewes (BM)with suckling lambs He brought him
To (BN)shepherd Jacob His people,
And Israel (BO)His inheritance.
72 So he shepherded them according to the (BP)integrity of his heart,
And guided them with his skillful hands.

Isaiah 26

Song of Trust in God’s Protection

26 (A)In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:

“We have a (B)strong city;
He sets up walls and ramparts for [a](C)security.
“Open the (D)gates, that the (E)righteous nation may enter,
The one that [b]remains faithful.
“The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect (F)peace,
Because he trusts in You.
(G)Trust in the Lord forever,
For in [c]God the Lord, we have an everlasting (H)Rock.
“For He has brought low those who dwell on high, the (I)unassailable city;
(J)He lays it low, He lays it low to the ground, He casts it to the dust.
(K)The foot will trample it,
The feet of the (L)afflicted, the steps of the helpless.”

The (M)way of the righteous is smooth;
O Upright One, (N)make the path of the righteous level.
Indeed, while following the way of (O)Your judgments, O Lord,
We have waited for You eagerly;
(P)Your name, even Your (Q)memory, is the desire of our souls.
(R)At night [d]my soul longs for You,
Indeed, [e]my spirit within me (S)seeks You diligently;
For when the earth [f]experiences Your judgments
The inhabitants of the world (T)learn righteousness.
10 Though the wicked is shown favor,
He does not (U)learn righteousness;
He (V)deals unjustly in the land of uprightness,
And does not perceive the majesty of the Lord.

11 O Lord, Your hand is lifted up yet they (W)do not see it.
[g]They see (X)Your zeal for the people and are put to shame;
Indeed, [h](Y)fire will devour Your enemies.
12 Lord, You will establish (Z)peace for us,
Since You have also performed for us all our works.
13 O Lord our God, (AA)other masters besides You have ruled us;
But through You alone we [i](AB)confess Your name.
14 (AC)The dead will not live, the [j]departed spirits will not rise;
Therefore You have (AD)punished and destroyed them,
And You have wiped out all remembrance of them.
15 (AE)You have increased the nation, O Lord,
You have increased the nation, You are glorified;
You have (AF)extended all the borders of the land.
16 O Lord, they sought You (AG)in distress;
They [k]could only whisper a prayer,
Your chastening was upon them.
17 (AH)As the pregnant woman approaches the time to give birth,
She writhes and cries out in her labor pains,
Thus were we before You, O Lord.
18 We were pregnant, we writhed in labor,
We (AI)gave birth, as it seems, only to wind.
We could not accomplish deliverance for the earth,
Nor were (AJ)inhabitants of the world [l]born.
19 Your (AK)dead will live;
[m]Their corpses will rise.
You who lie in the dust, (AL)awake and shout for joy,
For your dew is as the dew of the [n]dawn,
And the earth will [o]give birth to the [p]departed spirits.

20 Come, my people, (AM)enter into your rooms
And close your doors behind you;
Hide for a little [q](AN)while
Until (AO)indignation [r]runs its course.
21 For behold, the Lord is about to (AP)come out from His place
To (AQ)punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity;
And the earth will (AR)reveal her bloodshed
And will no longer cover her slain.

1 John 4

Testing the Spirits

(A)Beloved, do not believe every (B)spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because (C)many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: (D)every spirit that (E)confesses that (F)Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that (G)does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the (H)antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and (I)now it is already in the world. You are from God, (J)little children, and (K)have overcome them; because (L)greater is He who is in you than (M)he who is in the world. (N)They are from the world; therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them. (O)We are from God; (P)he who knows God listens to us; (Q)he who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know (R)the spirit of truth and (S)the spirit of error.

God Is Love

(T)Beloved, let us (U)love one another, for love is from God; and (V)everyone who loves is [a](W)born of God and (X)knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for (Y)God is love. By this the love of God was manifested [b](Z)in us, that (AA)God has sent His [c]only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, (AB)not that we loved God, but that (AC)He loved us and sent His Son to be (AD)the propitiation for our sins. 11 (AE)Beloved, if God so loved us, (AF)we also ought to love one another. 12 (AG)No one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His (AH)love is perfected in us. 13 (AI)By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. 14 We have seen and (AJ)testify that the Father has (AK)sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.

15 (AL)Whoever confesses that (AM)Jesus is the Son of God, God (AN)abides in him, and he in God. 16 (AO)We have come to know and have believed the love which God has [d](AP)for us. (AQ)God is love, and the one who (AR)abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this, (AS)love is perfected with us, so that we may have (AT)confidence in (AU)the day of judgment; because (AV)as He is, so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but (AW)perfect love casts out fear, because fear [e]involves punishment, and the one who fears is not (AX)perfected in love. 19 (AY)We love, because He first loved us. 20 (AZ)If someone says, “I love God,” and (BA)hates his brother, he is a (BB)liar; for (BC)the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, (BD)cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And (BE)this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God (BF)should love his brother also.
