Numbers 21

Arad Conquered

21 When the Canaanite, the king of (A)Arad, who lived in the [a]Negev, heard that Israel was coming by the way of [b]Atharim, then he fought against Israel and took some of them captive. So (B)Israel made a vow to the Lord and said, “If You will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will [c]utterly destroy their cities.” The Lord heard the voice of Israel and delivered up the Canaanites; then they [d]utterly destroyed them and their cities. Thus the name of the place was called [e](C)Hormah.

Then they set out from Mount Hor by the way of the [f]Red Sea, to (D)go around the land of Edom; and the [g]people became impatient because of the journey. The people spoke against God and Moses, “(E)Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no [h]food and no water, and [i](F)we loathe this miserable food.”

The Bronze Serpent

(G)The Lord sent fiery serpents among the people and (H)they bit the people, so that (I)many people of Israel died. (J)So the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and you; (K)intercede with the Lord, that He may remove the serpents from us.” And Moses interceded for the people. Then the Lord said to Moses, “[j]Make a (L)fiery serpent, and set it on a standard; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, he will live.” And Moses made a (M)bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.

10 (N)Now the sons of Israel moved out and camped in Oboth. 11 They journeyed from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness which is opposite Moab, to the [k]east. 12 (O)From there they set out and camped in [l]Wadi Zered. 13 From there they journeyed and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the border of the Amorites, (P)for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. 14 Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of the Lord,

“Waheb in Suphah,
And the wadis of the Arnon,
15 And the slope of the wadis
That extends to the site of (Q)Ar,
And leans to the border of Moab.”

16 (R)From there they continued to [m]Beer, that is the well where the Lord said to Moses, “Assemble the people, that I may give them water.”

17 (S)Then Israel sang this song:

“Spring up, O well! Sing to it!
18 “The well, which the leaders sank,
Which the nobles of the people dug,
With the scepter and with their staffs.”

And from the wilderness they continued to Mattanah, 19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth, 20 and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the land of Moab, at the top of Pisgah which overlooks the [n]wasteland.

Two Victories

21 (T)Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, saying, 22 (U)Let me pass through your land. We will not turn off into field or vineyard; we will not drink water from wells. We will go by the king’s highway until we have passed through your border.” 23 (V)But Sihon would not permit Israel to pass through his border. So Sihon gathered all his people and went out against Israel in the wilderness, and came to (W)Jahaz and fought against Israel. 24 Then (X)Israel [o]struck him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the sons of Ammon; for the (Y)border of the sons of Ammon was [p]Jazer. 25 Israel took all these cities and (Z)Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all her [q]villages. 26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken all his land out of his hand, as far as the Arnon. 27 Therefore those who use proverbs say,

“Come to Heshbon! Let it be built!
So let the city of Sihon be established.
28 (AA)For a fire went forth from Heshbon,
A flame from the town of Sihon;
It devoured (AB)Ar of Moab,
The [r](AC)dominant [s]heights of the Arnon.
29 (AD)Woe to you, O Moab!
You are ruined, O people of (AE)Chemosh!
(AF)He has given his sons as fugitives,
(AG)And his daughters into captivity,
To an Amorite king, Sihon.
30 “But we have cast them down,
Heshbon is ruined as far as (AH)Dibon,
Then we have laid waste even to Nophah,
Which reaches to Medeba.”

31 Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites. 32 Moses sent to spy out (AI)Jazer, and they captured its villages and dispossessed the Amorites who were there.

33 (AJ)Then they turned and went up by the way of Bashan, and Og the king of Bashan went out [t]with all his people, for battle at (AK)Edrei. 34 But the Lord said to Moses, “(AL)Do not fear him, for I have given him into your hand, and all his people and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.” 35 So (AM)they [u]killed him and his sons and all his people, until there was no remnant left him; and they possessed his land.

Psalm 60-61

Lament over Defeat in Battle, and Prayer for Help.

For the choir director; according to [a]Shushan Eduth. A [b]Mikhtam of David, to teach; [c]when he struggled with Aram-naharaim and with Aram-zobah, and Joab returned, and smote twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt.

60 O God, (A)You have rejected us. You have [d](B)broken us;
You have been (C)angry; O, (D)restore us.
You have made the [e](E)land quake, You have split it open;
(F)Heal its breaches, for it totters.
You have [f](G)made Your people experience hardship;
You have given us [g]wine to (H)drink that makes us stagger.
You have given a (I)banner to those who fear You,
That it may be displayed because of the truth. [h]Selah.
(J)That Your (K)beloved may be delivered,
(L)Save with Your right hand, and answer [i]us!

God has spoken in His [j](M)holiness:
“I will exult, I will portion out (N)Shechem and measure out the valley of (O)Succoth.
(P)Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine;
(Q)Ephraim also is the [k]helmet of My head;
Judah is My [l](R)scepter.
(S)Moab is My washbowl;
Over (T)Edom I shall throw My shoe;
Shout loud, O (U)Philistia, because of Me!”

Who will bring me into the besieged city?
Who [m]will lead me to Edom?
10 Have not You Yourself, O God, (V)rejected us?
And (W)will You not go forth with our armies, O God?
11 O give us help against the adversary,
For (X)deliverance [n]by man is in vain.
12 [o]Through God we shall (Y)do valiantly,
And it is He who will (Z)tread down our adversaries.

Confidence in God’s Protection.

For the choir director; on a stringed instrument. A Psalm of David.

61 (AA)Hear my cry, O God;
(AB)Give heed to my prayer.
From the (AC)end of the earth I call to You when my heart is (AD)faint;
Lead me to (AE)the rock that is higher than I.
For You have been a (AF)refuge for me,
A (AG)tower of strength [p]against the enemy.
Let me [q](AH)dwell in Your tent forever;
Let me (AI)take refuge in the shelter of Your wings. [r]Selah.

For You have heard my (AJ)vows, O God;
You have given me the inheritance of those who (AK)fear Your name.
You will [s](AL)prolong the king’s [t]life;
His years will be as many generations.
He will [u]abide (AM)before God forever;
Appoint (AN)lovingkindness and truth that they may preserve him.
So I will (AO)sing praise to Your name forever,
That I may (AP)pay my vows day by day.

Isaiah 10:5-34

Woe to (A)Assyria, the (B)rod of My anger
And the staff in whose hands is (C)My indignation,
I send it against a (D)godless nation
And commission it against the (E)people of My fury
To capture booty and (F)to seize plunder,
And to [a]trample them down like (G)mud in the streets.
Yet it (H)does not so intend,
Nor does [b]it plan so in its heart,
But rather it is [c]its purpose to destroy
And to cut off [d]many nations.
For it says, “Are not my princes [e]all kings?
“Is not (I)Calno like (J)Carchemish,
Or (K)Hamath like Arpad,
Or (L)Samaria like (M)Damascus?
10 “As my hand has reached to the (N)kingdoms of the idols,
Whose graven images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
11 Shall I not [f]do to Jerusalem and her images
Just as I have done to Samaria and (O)her idols?”

12 So it will be that when the Lord has completed all His (P)work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, He will say, “I will [g]punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and (Q)the pomp of [h]his haughtiness.” 13 For (R)he has said,

“By the power of my hand and by my wisdom I did this,
For I have understanding;
And I (S)removed the boundaries of the peoples
And plundered their treasures,
And like a mighty man I brought down [i]their inhabitants,
14 And my hand reached to the riches of the peoples like a (T)nest,
And as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth;
And there was not one that flapped its wing or opened its beak or chirped.”

15 Is the (U)axe to (V)boast itself over the one who chops with it?
Is the saw to exalt itself over the one who wields it?
That would be like (W)a [j]club wielding those who lift it,
Or like (X)a rod lifting him who is not wood.
16 Therefore the Lord, the [k]God of hosts, will send a (Y)wasting disease among his (Z)stout warriors;
And under his (AA)glory a fire will be kindled like a burning flame.
17 And the (AB)light of Israel will become a fire and his (AC)Holy One a flame,
And it will (AD)burn and devour his thorns and his briars in a single day.
18 And He will (AE)destroy the glory of his forest and of his fruitful garden, both soul and body,
And it will be as when a sick man wastes away.
19 And the (AF)rest of the trees of his forest will be so small in number
That a child could write them down.

A Remnant Will Return

20 Now in that day the (AG)remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob (AH)who have escaped, will never again rely on the one who struck them, but will truly (AI)rely on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

21 A (AJ)remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the (AK)mighty God.
22 For (AL)though your people, O Israel, may be like the sand of the sea,
Only a remnant within them will return;
A (AM)destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness.

23 For a complete destruction, one that is decreed, (AN)the Lord [l]God of hosts will execute in the midst of the whole land.

24 Therefore thus says the Lord [m]God of hosts, “O My people who dwell in (AO)Zion, (AP)do not fear the Assyrian [n]who (AQ)strikes you with the rod and lifts up his staff against you, the way Egypt did. 25 For in a very (AR)little while (AS)My indignation against you will be spent and My anger will be directed to their destruction.” 26 The Lord of hosts will (AT)arouse a scourge against him like the slaughter of (AU)Midian at the rock of Oreb; and His (AV)staff will be over the sea and He will lift it up (AW)the way He did in Egypt. 27 So it will be in that day, that [o]his (AX)burden will be removed from your shoulders and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be broken because (AY)of fatness.

28 He has come against Aiath,
He has passed through (AZ)Migron;
At (BA)Michmash he deposited his (BB)baggage.
29 They have gone through (BC)the pass, saying,
(BD)Geba will be our lodging place.”
(BE)Ramah is terrified, and (BF)Gibeah of Saul has fled away.
30 Cry aloud with your voice, O daughter of (BG)Gallim!
Pay attention, Laishah and [p]wretched (BH)Anathoth!
31 Madmenah has fled.
The inhabitants of Gebim have sought refuge.
32 Yet today he will halt at (BI)Nob;
He (BJ)shakes his fist at the mountain of the [q](BK)daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

33 Behold, the Lord, the [r]God of hosts, will lop off the boughs with a terrible crash;
Those also who are (BL)tall in stature will be cut down
And those who are lofty will be abased.
34 He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an iron axe,
And (BM)Lebanon will fall [s]by the Mighty One.

James 4

Things to Avoid

[a]What is the source of quarrels and (A)conflicts among you? [b]Is not the source your pleasures that wage (B)war in your members? You lust and do not have; so you (C)commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and (D)do not receive, because you ask [c]with wrong motives, so that you may spend it [d]on your pleasures. You (E)adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with (F)the world is (G)hostility toward God? (H)Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture (I)speaks to no purpose: “[e]He [f]jealously desires (J)the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us”? But (K)He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “(L)God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (M)Submit therefore to God. (N)Resist the devil and he will flee from you. (O)Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. (P)Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and (Q)purify your hearts, you (R)double-minded. (S)Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 (T)Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.

11 (U)Do not speak against one another, (V)brethren. He who speaks against a brother or (W)judges his brother, speaks against (X)the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not (Y)a doer of the law but a judge of it. 12 There is only one (Z)Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is (AA)able to save and to destroy; but (AB)who are you who judge your neighbor?

13 (AC)Come now, you who say, “(AD)Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.” 14 [g]Yet you do not know [h]what your life will be like tomorrow. (AE)You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. 15 [i]Instead, you ought to say, “(AF)If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.” 16 But as it is, you boast in your [j]arrogance; (AG)all such boasting is evil. 17 Therefore, (AH)to one who knows the [k]right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.
