Good News Translation (GNT)
Version
Deuteronomy 13-14

13 “Prophets or interpreters of dreams may promise a miracle or a wonder, in order to lead you to worship and serve gods that you have not worshiped before. Even if what they promise comes true, do not pay any attention to them. The Lord your God is using them to test you, to see if you love the Lord with all your heart. Follow the Lord and honor him; obey him and keep his commands; worship him and be faithful to him. But put to death any interpreters of dreams or prophets that tell you to rebel against the Lord, who rescued you from Egypt, where you were slaves. Such people are evil and are trying to lead you away from the life that the Lord has commanded you to live. They must be put to death, in order to rid yourselves of this evil.

“Even your brother or your son or your daughter or the wife you love or your closest friend may secretly encourage you to worship other gods, gods that you and your ancestors have never worshiped. Some of them may encourage you to worship the gods of the people who live near you or the gods of those who live far away. But do not let any of them persuade you; do not even listen to them. Show them no mercy or pity, and do not protect them. Kill them! Be the first to stone them, and then let everyone else stone them too. 10 Stone them to death! They tried to lead you away from the Lord your God, who rescued you from Egypt, where you were slaves. 11 Then all the people of Israel will hear what happened; they will be afraid, and no one will ever again do such an evil thing.

12 “When you are living in the towns that the Lord your God gives you, you may hear 13 that some worthless people of your nation have misled the people of their town to worship gods that you have never worshiped before. 14 If you hear such a rumor, investigate it thoroughly; and if it is true that this evil thing did happen, 15 then kill all the people in that town and all their livestock too. Destroy that town completely. 16 Bring together all the possessions of the people who live there and pile them up in the town square. Then burn the town and everything in it as an offering to the Lord your God. It must be left in ruins forever and never again be rebuilt. 17 Do not keep for yourselves anything that was condemned to destruction, and then the Lord will turn from his fierce anger and show you mercy. He will be merciful to you and make you a numerous people, as he promised your ancestors, 18 if you obey all his commands that I have given you today, and do what he requires.

A Forbidden Mourning Practice

14 (A)“You are the people of the Lord your God. So when you mourn for the dead, don't gash yourselves or shave the front of your head, as other people do. (B)You belong to the Lord your God; he has chosen you to be his own people from among all the peoples who live on earth.

Clean and Unclean Animals(C)

“Do not eat anything that the Lord has declared unclean. You may eat these animals: cattle, sheep, goats, deer, wild sheep, wild goats, or antelopes— any animals that have divided hoofs and that also chew the cud. But no animals may be eaten unless they have divided hoofs and also chew the cud. You may not eat camels, rabbits, or rock badgers. They must be considered unclean; they chew the cud but do not have divided hoofs. Do not eat pigs. They must be considered unclean; they have divided hoofs but do not chew the cud. Do not eat any of these animals or even touch their dead bodies.

“You may eat any kind of fish that has fins and scales, 10 but anything living in the water that does not have fins and scales may not be eaten; it must be considered unclean.

11 “You may eat any clean bird. 12-18 But these are the kinds of birds you are not to eat: eagles, owls, hawks, falcons; buzzards, vultures, crows; ostriches; seagulls, storks, herons, pelicans, cormorants;[a] hoopoes; and bats.

19 “All winged insects are unclean; do not eat them. 20 You may eat any clean insect.

21 (D)“Do not eat any animal that dies a natural death. You may let the foreigners who live among you eat it, or you may sell it to other foreigners. But you belong to the Lord your God; you are his people.

“Do not cook a young sheep or goat in its mother's milk.

The Law of the Tithe

22 (E)“Set aside a tithe—a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. 23 Then go to the one place where the Lord your God has chosen to be worshiped; and there in his presence eat the tithes of your grain, wine, and olive oil, and the first-born of your cattle and sheep. Do this so that you may learn to honor the Lord your God always. 24 If the place of worship is too far from your home for you to carry there the tithe of the produce that the Lord has blessed you with, then do this: 25 Sell your produce and take the money with you to the one place of worship. 26 Spend it on whatever you want—beef, lamb, wine, beer—and there, in the presence of the Lord your God, you and your families are to eat and enjoy yourselves.

27 “Do not neglect the Levites who live in your towns; they have no property of their own. 28 At the end of every third year bring the tithe of all your crops and store it in your towns. 29 This food is for the Levites, since they own no property, and for the foreigners, orphans, and widows who live in your towns. They are to come and get all they need. Do this, and the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.

Psalm 99-101

God the Supreme King

99 (A)The Lord is king,
    and the people tremble.
He sits on his throne above the winged creatures,
    and the earth shakes.
The Lord is mighty in Zion;
    he is supreme over all the nations.
Everyone will praise his great and majestic name.
    Holy is he!

Mighty king,[a] you love what is right;
    you have established justice in Israel;
    you have brought righteousness and fairness.
Praise the Lord our God;
    worship before his throne!
    Holy is he!

Moses and Aaron were his priests,
    and Samuel was one who prayed to him;
    they called to the Lord, and he answered them.
(B)He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud;
    they obeyed the laws and commands that he gave them.

O Lord, our God, you answered your people;
    you showed them that you are a God who forgives,
    even though you punished them for their sins.
Praise the Lord our God,
    and worship at his sacred hill![b]
The Lord our God is holy.

A Hymn of Praise[c]

100 Sing to the Lord, all the world!
Worship the Lord with joy;
    come before him with happy songs!

Acknowledge that the Lord is God.
    He made us, and we belong to him;
    we are his people, we are his flock.

Enter the Temple gates with thanksgiving;
    go into its courts with praise.
    Give thanks to him and praise him.

(C)The Lord is good;
    his love is eternal
    and his faithfulness lasts forever.

A King's Promise[d]

101 My song is about loyalty and justice,
    and I sing it to you, O Lord.
My conduct will be faultless.
    When will you come to me?

I will live a pure life in my house
    and will never tolerate evil.
I hate the actions of those who turn away from God;
    I will have nothing to do with them.
I will not be dishonest[e]
    and will have no dealings with evil.[f]
I will get rid of anyone
    who whispers evil things about someone else;
I will not tolerate anyone
    who is proud and arrogant.

I will approve of those who are faithful to God
    and will let them live in my palace.
Those who are completely honest
    will be allowed to serve me.

No liar will live in my palace;
    no hypocrite will remain in my presence.
Day after day I will destroy
    the wicked in our land;
I will expel all who are evil
    from the city of the Lord.

Isaiah 41

God's Assurance to Israel

41 God says,

“Be silent and listen to me, you distant lands!
    Get ready to present your case in court;
    you will have your chance to speak.
Let us come together to decide who is right.

“Who was it that brought the conqueror from the east[a]
    and makes him triumphant wherever he goes?
Who gives him victory over kings and nations?
    His sword strikes them down as if they were dust.
    His arrows scatter them like straw before the wind.
He follows in pursuit and marches safely on,
    so fast that he hardly touches the ground!
Who was it that made this happen?
    Who has determined the course of history?
I, the Lord, was there at the beginning,
    and I, the Lord, will be there at the end.

“The people of distant lands have seen what I have done;
    they are frightened and tremble with fear.
    So they all assemble and come.
The skilled workers help and encourage each other.
The carpenter says to the goldsmith, ‘Well done!’
    The one who beats the idol smooth
    encourages the one who nails it together.
They say, ‘The soldering is good’—
    and they fasten the idol in place with nails.

(A)“But you, Israel my servant,
    you are the people that I have chosen,
    the descendants of Abraham, my friend.
I brought you from the ends of the earth;
    I called you from its farthest corners
    and said to you, ‘You are my servant.’
I did not reject you, but chose you.
10 Do not be afraid—I am with you!
    I am your God—let nothing terrify you!
I will make you strong and help you;
    I will protect you and save you.

11 “Those who are angry with you
    will know the shame of defeat.
Those who fight against you will die
12     and will disappear from the earth.
13 I am the Lord your God;
    I strengthen you and tell you,
    ‘Do not be afraid; I will help you.’”

14 The Lord says,

“Small and weak as you are, Israel,
    don't be afraid; I will help you.
I, the holy God of Israel, am the one who saves you.
15 I will make you like a threshing board,
    with spikes that are new and sharp.
You will thresh mountains and destroy them;
    hills will crumble into dust.
16 You will toss them in the air;
    the wind will carry them off,
    and they will be scattered by the storm.
Then you will be happy because I am your God;
    you will praise me, the holy God of Israel.

17 “When my people in their need look for water,
    when their throats are dry with thirst,
then I, the Lord, will answer their prayer;
    I, the God of Israel, will never abandon them.
18 I will make rivers flow among barren hills
    and springs of water run in the valleys.
I will turn the desert into pools of water
    and the dry land into flowing springs.
19 I will make cedars grow in the desert,
    and acacias and myrtles and olive trees.
Forests will grow in barren land,
    forests of pine and juniper and cypress.
20 People will see this and know
    that I, the Lord, have done it.
They will come to understand
    that Israel's holy God has made it happen.”

The Lord's Challenge to False Gods

21 The Lord, the king of Israel, has this to say:

“You gods of the nations, present your case.
    Bring the best arguments you have!
22 Come here and predict what will happen,
    so that we will know it when it takes place.
Explain to the court the events of the past,
    and tell us what they mean.
23 Tell us what the future holds—
    then we will know that you are gods!
Do something good or bring some disaster;
    fill us with fear and awe!
24 You and all you do are nothing;
    those who worship you are disgusting!

25 “I have chosen a man who lives in the east;[b]
    I will bring him to attack from the north.
He tramples on rulers as if they were mud,
    like a potter trampling clay.
26 Which of you predicted that this would happen,
    so that we could say that you were right?
None of you said a word about it;
    no one heard you say a thing!
27 I, the Lord, was the first to tell Zion the news;
    I sent a messenger to Jerusalem to say,
    ‘Your people are coming! They are coming home!’[c]
28 When I looked among the gods,
    none of them had a thing to say;
    not one could answer the questions I asked.
29 All these gods are useless;
    they can do nothing at all—
    these idols are weak and powerless.”

Revelation 11

The Two Witnesses

11 (A)I was then given a stick that looked like a measuring-rod, and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, and count those who are worshiping in the temple. (B)But do not measure the outer courts, because they have been given to the heathen, who will trample on the Holy City for forty-two months. I will send my two witnesses dressed in sackcloth, and they will proclaim God's message during those 1, 260 days.”

(C)The two witnesses are the two olive trees and the two lamps that stand before the Lord of the earth. If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes out of their mouths and destroys their enemies; and in this way whoever tries to harm them will be killed. (D)They have authority to shut up the sky so that there will be no rain during the time they proclaim God's message. They have authority also over the springs of water, to turn them into blood; they have authority also to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they wish.

(E)When they finish proclaiming their message, the beast that comes up out of the abyss will fight against them. He will defeat them and kill them, (F)and their bodies will lie in the street of the great city, where their Lord was crucified. The symbolic name of that city is Sodom, or Egypt. People from all nations, tribes, languages, and races will look at their bodies for three and a half days and will not allow them to be buried. 10 The people of the earth will be happy because of the death of these two. They will celebrate and send presents to each other, because those two prophets brought much suffering upon the whole human race. 11 (G)After three and a half days a life-giving breath came from God and entered them, and they stood up; and all who saw them were terrified. 12 (H)Then the two prophets heard a loud voice say to them from heaven, “Come up here!” As their enemies watched, they went up into heaven in a cloud. 13 (I)At that very moment there was a violent earthquake; a tenth of the city was destroyed, and seven thousand people were killed. The rest of the people were terrified and praised the greatness of the God of heaven.

14 The second horror is over, but the third horror will come soon!

The Seventh Trumpet

15 (J)Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The power to rule over the world belongs now to our Lord and his Messiah, and he will rule forever and ever!” 16 Then the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones in front of God threw themselves face downward and worshiped God, 17 saying:

“Lord God Almighty, the one who is and who was!
We thank you that you have taken your great power
    and have begun to rule!
18 (K)The heathen were filled with rage,
    because the time for your anger has come,
    the time for the dead to be judged.
The time has come to reward your servants, the prophets,
    and all your people, all who have reverence for you,
    great and small alike.
The time has come to destroy those who destroy the earth!”

19 (L)God's temple in heaven was opened, and the Covenant Box was seen there. Then there were flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail.
