An Annual Atonement
29 “This shall be a permanent statute for you: (A)in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall humble [a]yourselves and not (B)do any work, whether the native, or the stranger who resides among you; 30 for it is on this day that [b]atonement shall be made for you to (C)cleanse you; you will be clean from all your sins before the Lord. 31 It is to be a Sabbath of solemn rest for you, so that you may (D)humble [c]yourselves; it is a permanent statute. 32 So the priest who is anointed and [d]ordained to serve as priest in his father’s place shall make atonement: he shall put on (E)the linen garments, the holy garments, 33 and make atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar. He shall also make atonement for (F)the priests and for all the people of the assembly. 34 Now you shall have this as a (G)permanent statute, to (H)make atonement for the sons of Israel for all their sins once every year.” And just as the Lord had commanded Moses, so he did.
Blood for Atonement
17 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to Aaron and to his sons and to all the sons of Israel, and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord has commanded, saying, 3 “Anyone from the house of Israel who slaughters an ox, a lamb, or a goat in the camp, or slaughters it outside the camp, 4 and (I)has not brought it to the doorway of the tent of meeting to present it as an offering to the Lord in front of the [e]tabernacle of the Lord, bloodshed is to be counted against that person. He has shed blood, and that person shall be cut off from among his people. 5 This shall be done so that the sons of Israel will bring their sacrifices which they were sacrificing [f]in the open field—so that they will bring them to the Lord at the doorway of the tent of meeting to the priest, and sacrifice them as sacrifices of peace offerings to the Lord. 6 The priest shall sprinkle the blood on the altar of the Lord at the doorway of the tent of meeting, and (J)offer up the fat in smoke as a soothing aroma to the Lord. 7 And (K)they shall no longer offer their sacrifices to the [g]goat demons with which they play the prostitute. This shall be a permanent statute to them throughout their generations.”’
8 “Then you shall say to them, ‘Anyone from the house of Israel, or from the strangers who reside among them, who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice, 9 and (L)does not bring it to the doorway of the tent of meeting to [h]offer it to the Lord, that person also shall be cut off from his people.
10 ‘(M)And anyone from the house of Israel, or from the strangers who reside among them, who eats any blood, (N)I will set My face against that person who eats the blood, and will cut him off from among his people. 11 For (O)the [i]life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for (P)it is the blood by reason of the [j]life that makes atonement.’ 12 Therefore I said to the sons of Israel, ‘No person among you may eat blood, nor may any stranger who resides among you eat blood.’ 13 So when anyone from the sons of Israel, or from the strangers who reside among them, [k]while hunting catches an animal or a bird which may be eaten, (Q)he shall pour out its blood and cover it with dirt.
14 “(R)For as for the [l]life of all flesh, its blood is identified with its [m]life. Therefore I said to the sons of Israel, ‘You are not to eat the blood of any flesh, for the [n]life of all flesh is its blood; whoever eats it shall be cut off.’ 15 And (S)any person who eats an animal which dies or is torn by animals, whether he is a native or a stranger, shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and remain unclean until evening; then he will become clean. 16 But if he does not wash his clothes and bathe his body, then (T)he shall bear the responsibility for his [o]guilt.”
Laws on Immoral Relations
18 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘(U)I am the Lord your God. 3 You shall not do [p]what is (V)done in the land of Egypt where you lived, nor are you to do [q]what is (W)done in the land of Canaan where I am bringing you; you shall not walk in their statutes. 4 You are to perform My judgments and keep My statutes, [r]to live in accord with them; (X)I am the Lord your God. 5 So you shall keep My statutes and My judgments, (Y)which, if [s]a person [t]follows them, then he will live by them; I am the Lord.
6 ‘None of you shall approach any blood relative [u]of his to uncover nakedness; I am the Lord. 7 (Z)You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father, that is, the nakedness of your mother. She is your mother; you are not to uncover her nakedness. 8 (AA)You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s wife; it is your father’s nakedness. 9 As for (AB)the nakedness of your sister, either your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether born in the household or born outside the household, you shall not uncover their nakedness. 10 The nakedness of your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, their nakedness you shall not uncover; for [v]their nakedness is yours. 11 The nakedness of your father’s wife’s daughter, born to your father, she is your sister; you shall not uncover her nakedness. 12 (AC)You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s sister; she is your father’s blood relative. 13 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister, for she is your mother’s blood relative. 14 (AD)You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s brother. You shall not approach his wife; she is your aunt. 15 (AE)You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter-in-law. She is your son’s wife; you shall not uncover her nakedness. 16 (AF)You shall not uncover the nakedness of your brother’s wife; it is your brother’s nakedness. 17 (AG)You shall not uncover the nakedness of a woman and of her daughter, nor shall you take her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter, to uncover her nakedness; they are blood relatives. It is an outrageous sin. 18 And you shall not [w]marry a woman in addition to her sister [x]as a second wife while she is alive, to uncover her nakedness.
19 ‘(AH)Also you shall not approach a woman to uncover her nakedness during her (AI)menstrual impurity. 20 And (AJ)you shall not have sexual intercourse with your neighbor’s wife, to be defiled with her. 21 You shall not give any of your children (AK)to [y]offer them to Molech, nor shall you (AL)profane the name of your God; I am the Lord. 22 (AM)You shall not sleep with a male as [z]one sleeps with a female; it is an abomination. 23 (AN)Also you shall not have sexual intercourse with any animal to be defiled with it, nor shall any woman stand before an animal to [aa]mate with it; it is a perversion.
24 ‘Do not defile yourselves by any of these things; for by all these things (AO)the nations which I am driving out from you have become defiled. 25 For the land has become defiled, (AP)therefore I have brought its punishment upon it, so the land (AQ)has vomited out its inhabitants. 26 But as for you, you are to keep My statutes and My judgments, and you shall not do any of these abominations, neither the native, nor the stranger who resides among you 27 (for the people of the land who were there before you did all these abominations, and the land has become defiled), 28 so that the land will not vomit you out should you defile it, as it has vomited out the nation which was there before you. 29 For whoever does any of these abominations, those persons who do so shall be cut off from among their people. 30 So you are to keep (AR)your [ab]commitment to Me not to practice any of the abominable customs which have been practiced before you, so that you do not defile yourselves with them; (AS)I am the Lord your God.’”
The Syrophoenician Woman
24 (A)Now Jesus got up and went from there to the region of (B)Tyre[a]. And when He had entered a house, He wanted no one to know about it; and yet He could not escape notice. 25 But after hearing about Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately came and fell at His feet. 26 Now the woman was a [b]Gentile, of Syrophoenician descent. And she repeatedly asked Him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 And He was saying to her, “Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not [c]good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the [d]dogs.” 28 But she answered and *said to Him, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table feed on the children’s crumbs.” 29 And He said to her, “Because of this [e]answer, go; the demon has gone out of your daughter.” 30 And after going back to her home, she found the child [f]lying on the bed, and the demon gone.
31 (C)Again He left the region of (D)Tyre and came through Sidon to (E)the Sea of Galilee, within the region of (F)Decapolis. 32 And they *brought to Him one who was deaf and had difficulty speaking, and they *begged Him to (G)lay His hand on him. 33 And Jesus (H)took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers in his ears, and after (I)spitting, He touched his tongue with the saliva; 34 and looking up to heaven with a deep (J)sigh, He *said to him, “Ephphatha!” that is, “Be opened!” 35 And his ears were opened, and the [g]impediment of his tongue was [h]removed, and he began speaking plainly. 36 And (K)He gave them orders not to tell anyone; but the more He ordered them, the more widely they (L)continued to proclaim it. 37 And they were utterly astonished, saying, “He has done all things well; He makes even those who are deaf hear, and those who are unable to talk, speak.”
Four Thousand Men Fed
8 In those days, (M)when there was again a large crowd and they had nothing to eat, Jesus summoned His disciples and *said to them, 2 “(N)I feel compassion for the [i]people because they have remained with Me for three days already and have nothing to eat. 3 And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from a great distance.” 4 And His disciples replied to Him, “Where will anyone be able to find enough [j]bread here in this desolate place to satisfy these people?” 5 And He was asking them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.” 6 And He *directed the [k]people to recline on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and started giving them to His disciples to serve, and they served them to the [l]people. 7 They also had a few small fish; and (O)after He had blessed them, He told the disciples to serve these as well. 8 And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large (P)baskets full of what was left over of the broken pieces. 9 About four thousand [m]men were there; and He dismissed them. 10 And immediately He got into the boat with His disciples and came to the region of (Q)Dalmanutha.

41 Blessed is one who (A)considers the [a]helpless;
The Lord will save him (B)on a day of [b]trouble.
2 The Lord will (C)protect him and keep him alive,
And he will be called [c](D)blessed upon the earth;
And (E)do not turn him over to the desire of his enemies.
3 The Lord will sustain him upon his sickbed;
In his illness, You [d]restore him to health.
4 As for me, I said, “Lord, be gracious to me;
(F)Heal my soul, for (G)I have sinned against You.”
5 My enemies (H)speak evil against me,
“When will he die, and his name perish?”
6 And [e]when he comes to see me, he (I)speaks [f]empty words;
His heart gathers wickedness to itself;
When he goes outside, he tells it.
7 All who hate me whisper together against me;
They (J)plot my harm against me, saying,
8 “A wicked thing is poured out [g]upon him,
So that when he lies down, he will (K)not get up again.”
9 Even my [h](L)close friend in whom I trusted,
Who ate my bread,
Has lifted up his heel against me.
10 But You, Lord, be gracious to me and (M)raise me up,
That I may repay them.
11 By this I know that (N)You are pleased with me,
Because (O)my enemy does not shout in triumph over me.
12 As for me, (P)You uphold me in my integrity,
And You place me (Q)in Your presence forever.
13 (R)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
From everlasting to everlasting.
