Version
Exodus 15:19-17:7

19 (A)For the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, and the Lord brought back the waters of the sea on them, but the sons of Israel walked on (B)dry land through the midst of the sea.

20 (C)Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took the (D)tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with [a](E)dancing. 21 And Miriam answered them,

(F)Sing to the Lord, for He [b]is highly exalted;
The horse and his rider He has hurled into the sea.”

The Lord Provides Water

22 (G)Then Moses [c]led Israel from the [d]Red Sea, and they went out into (H)the wilderness of (I)Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness and found no water. 23 When they came to (J)Marah, they could not drink the waters [e]of Marah, because they were [f]bitter; for that reason it was named [g]Marah. 24 So the people (K)grumbled at Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?” 25 Then he (L)cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him (M)a tree; and he threw it into the waters, and the waters became sweet.

There He (N)made for them a statute and regulation, and there He (O)tested them. 26 And He said, “(P)If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in His sight, and listen (Q)to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, (R)I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, (S)the Lord, am your healer.”

27 Then they came to (T)Elim where there were twelve springs of water and seventy date palms, and they camped there beside the waters.

The Lord Provides Manna

16 Then they set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the sons of Israel came to the wilderness of (U)Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on (V)the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt. But the whole congregation of the sons of Israel (W)grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The sons of Israel said to them, “(X)If only we had died by the Lords hand in the land of Egypt, (Y)when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate bread until we were full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this entire assembly with hunger!”

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, (Z)I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, so that I may (AA)test them, whether or not they will walk in My [h]instruction. (AB)On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.” So Moses and Aaron said to all the sons of Israel, “At evening [i](AC)you will know that the Lord has brought you out of the land of Egypt; and in the morning [j]you will see (AD)the glory of the Lord, for (AE)He hears your grumblings against the Lord; and (AF)what are we, that you grumble against us?”

The Lord Provides Meat

And Moses said, “This will happen when the Lord gives you meat to eat in the evening, and bread to the full in the morning; for the Lord hears your grumblings which you grumble against Him. And what are we? Your grumblings are (AG)not against us but against the Lord.”

Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, ‘(AH)Come forward before the Lord, for He has heard your grumblings.’” 10 And it came about, as Aaron spoke to the entire congregation of the sons of Israel, that they [k]looked toward the wilderness, and behold, (AI)the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. 11 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 12 (AJ)I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel; speak to them, saying, ‘[l]At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and (AK)you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’”

13 So it came about at evening that (AL)the quails came up and covered the camp, and in the morning (AM)there was a layer of dew around the camp. 14 (AN)When the layer of dew [m]evaporated, behold, on the [n]surface of the wilderness (AO)there was a fine flake-like thing, fine as the frost on the ground. 15 When the sons of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “[o]What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “(AP)It is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat. 16 This is [p]what the Lord has commanded: ‘Everyone gather [q]as much as he will eat; you shall take [r](AQ)an omer apiece according to the number of people each of you has in his tent.’” 17 The sons of Israel did so, and some gathered much and some little. 18 When they measured it by the [s]omer, (AR)the one who had gathered much did not have too much, and the one who had gathered little did not have too little; everyone gathered [t]as much as he would eat. 19 Moses said to them, “(AS)No one is to leave any of it until morning.” 20 But they did not listen to Moses, and some left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank; and Moses was angry with them. 21 They gathered it morning by morning, everyone [u]as much as he would eat; but when the sun became hot, it would melt.

The Sabbath

22 (AT)Now on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, [v]two omers for each one. When all the (AU)leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, 23 then he said to them, “This is what the Lord [w]meant: (AV)Tomorrow is a Sabbath observance, a holy Sabbath to the Lord. Bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and (AW)all that is left over [x]put aside to be kept until morning.” 24 So they put it aside until morning, as Moses had ordered, and (AX)it did not stink nor was there a maggot in it. 25 Then Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field. 26 (AY)Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will be [y]none.”

27 Yet it came about on the seventh day that some of the people went out to gather, but they found none. 28 Then the Lord said to Moses, “(AZ)How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My [z]instructions? 29 See, [aa]the Lord has given you the Sabbath; for that reason He gives you bread for two days on the sixth day. Remain, everyone, in his place; no one is to leave his place on the seventh day.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.

31 And the house of (BA)Israel named the bread [ab]manna, and it was like (BB)coriander seed, white, and its taste was like wafers with honey. 32 Then Moses said, “This is [ac]what the Lord has commanded: ‘A [ad]full omer of it is to be kept safe throughout your generations, so that they may see the bread that I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’” 33 And Moses said to Aaron, “(BC)Take a jar and put a [ae]full omer of manna in it, and place it before the Lord to be kept safe throughout your generations.” 34 As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before (BD)the Testimony, to be kept. 35 And (BE)the sons of Israel ate the manna for forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate the manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan. 36 (Now (BF)an [af]omer is a tenth of an ephah.)

Water in the Rock

17 Then all the congregation of the sons of Israel journeyed by [ag]stages from the wilderness of (BG)Sin, according to the [ah]command of the Lord, and camped at (BH)Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink. So the people (BI)quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water so that we may drink!” And Moses said to them, “(BJ)Why do you quarrel with me? (BK)Why do you test the Lord?” But the people were thirsty for water there; and [ai]they (BL)grumbled against Moses and said, “Why is it that you have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill [aj]us and [ak]our children and [al](BM)our livestock with thirst?” So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, “What am I to do with this people? A (BN)little more and they will stone me!” Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pass before the people and take with you some of (BO)the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your staff with which (BP)you struck the Nile, and go. Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at (BQ)Horeb; and (BR)you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. Then he named the place [am](BS)Massah and [an](BT)Meribah because of the quarrel of the sons of Israel, and because they (BU)tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us, or not?”

Matthew 22:1-33

Parable of the Marriage Feast

22 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying, (A)The kingdom of heaven [a]is like [b]a king who [c]held a (B)wedding feast for his son. And he (C)sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast, and they were unwilling to come. Again he (D)sent other slaves, saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited, “Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fattened cattle are all butchered and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast!”’ But they paid no attention and went their separate ways, one to his own [d]farm, another to his business, and the rest seized his slaves and treated them abusively, and then killed them. Now the king was angry, and he sent his armies and destroyed those murderers and set their city on fire. Then he *said to his slaves, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. So go to (E)the main roads, and invite whomever you find there to the wedding feast.’ 10 Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good; and the wedding hall was filled with [e]dinner guests.

11 “But when the king came in to look over the [f]dinner guests, he saw (F)a man there who was not dressed in wedding clothes, 12 and he *said to him, ‘(G)Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ And the man was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the servants, ‘Tie his hands and feet, and throw him into (H)the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth in that place.’ 14 For many are [g](I)called, but few are (J)chosen.”

Poll-tax to Caesar

15 (K)Then the Pharisees went and [h]plotted together how they might trap Him [i]in what He said. 16 And they *sent their disciples to Him, along with the (L)Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that You are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and [j]do not care what anyone thinks; for You [k]are not partial to anyone. 17 Tell us then, what do You think? Is it [l]permissible to pay a [m](M)poll-tax to (N)Caesar, or not?” 18 But Jesus perceived their [n]malice, and said, “Why are you testing Me, you hypocrites? 19 Show Me the (O)coin used for the poll-tax.” And they brought Him a [o]denarius. 20 And He *said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” 21 They *said to Him, “Caesar’s.” Then He *said to them, (P)Then pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.” 22 And hearing this, they were amazed; and (Q)they left Him and went away.

Jesus Answers the Sadducees

23 (R)On that day some (S)Sadducees (who say (T)there is no resurrection) came to [p]Jesus and questioned Him, 24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘(U)If a man dies having no children, his brother as next of kin shall marry his wife, and raise up [q]children for his brother.’ 25 Now there were seven brothers among us; and the first married and died, and having no [r]children, he left his wife to his brother. 26 It was the same also with the second brother, and the third, down to the seventh. 27 Last of all, the woman died. 28 In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her in marriage.”

29 But Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, (V)since you do not [s]understand the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither (W)marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31 But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God: 32 (X)I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” 33 When the crowds heard this, (Y)they were astonished at His teaching.

Psalm 27:1-6

A Psalm of Fearless Trust in God.

A Psalm of David.

27 The Lord is my (A)light and my (B)salvation;
Whom should I fear?
The Lord is the [a](C)defense of my life;
(D)Whom should I dread?
When evildoers came upon me to (E)devour my flesh,
My adversaries and my enemies, they (F)stumbled and fell.
If an (G)army encamps against me,
My heart will not fear;
If war arises against me,
In spite of this I am (H)confident.

(I)One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek:
That I may (J)dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
To behold (K)the [b]beauty of the Lord
And to [c](L)meditate in His temple.
For on the (M)day of trouble He will (N)conceal me in His [d]tabernacle;
He will (O)hide me in the secret place of His tent;
He will (P)lift me up on a rock.
And now (Q)my head will be lifted up above my enemies around me,
And I will offer (R)sacrifices in His tent [e]with shouts of joy;
I will (S)sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.

Proverbs 6:20-26

20 (A)My son, comply with the commandment of your father,
And do not ignore the [a]teaching of your mother;
21 (B)Bind them continually on your heart;
Tie them around your neck.
22 When you (C)walk, [b]they will guide you;
When you sleep, [c]they will watch over you;
And when you awake, [d]they will talk to you.
23 For (D)the commandment is a lamp and the [e]teaching is light;
And rebukes for discipline are the way of life
24 To (E)keep you from the evil woman,
From the smooth tongue of the foreign woman.
25 (F)Do not desire her beauty in your heart,
Nor let her capture you with her (G)eyelids.
26 For (H)the price of a prostitute reduces one to a loaf of bread,
And [f]an adulteress (I)hunts for a precious life.
