Job’s Confession
42 Then Job answered the Lord:
2 “I know that you can do all things;
no purpose of yours can be thwarted;
3 you asked,[a] ‘Who is this who darkens counsel without knowledge?’
But[b] I have declared without understanding[c]
things too wonderful for me to know.[d]
4 You said,[e] ‘Pay attention, and I will speak;
I will question you, and you will answer me.’
5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,
but now my eye has seen you.[f]
6 Therefore I despise myself,[g]
and I repent in dust and ashes!”
VII. The Epilogue (42:7-17)
Job’s Restoration
7 After the Lord had spoken these things to Job, he[h] said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My anger is stirred up[i] against you and your two friends, because you have not spoken about me what is right,[j] as my servant Job has. 8 So now take[k] seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and offer a burnt offering for yourselves. And my servant Job will intercede[l] for you, and I will respect him,[m] so that I do not deal with you[n] according to your folly,[o] because you have not spoken about me what is right, as my servant Job has.”[p]
9 So they went, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, and did just as the Lord had told them; and the Lord had respect for Job.[q]
10 So the Lord[r] restored what Job had lost[s] after he prayed for his friends,[t] and the Lord doubled[u] all that had belonged to Job. 11 So they came to him, all his brothers and sisters and all who had known him before, and they dined[v] with him in his house. They comforted him and consoled him for all the trouble the Lord had brought on him, and each one gave him a piece of silver[w] and a gold ring.[x]
12 So the Lord blessed the second part of Job’s life more than the first. He had 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys. 13 And he also had seven sons[y] and three daughters. 14 The first daughter he named Jemimah,[z] the second Keziah,[aa] and the third Keren-Happuch.[ab] 15 Nowhere in all the land could women be found who were as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance alongside their brothers.
16 After this Job lived 140 years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. 17 And so Job died, old and full of days.
Book 1 (Psalms 1-41)
Psalm 1[ac]
1 How blessed[ad] is the one[ae] who does not follow[af] the advice[ag] of the wicked,[ah]
or stand in the pathway[ai] with sinners,
or sit in the assembly[aj] of scoffers.[ak]
2 Instead[al] he finds pleasure in obeying the Lord’s commands;[am]
he meditates on[an] his commands[ao] day and night.
3 He is like[ap] a tree planted by flowing streams;[aq]
it[ar] yields[as] its fruit at the proper time,[at]
and its leaves never fall off.[au]
He succeeds in everything he attempts.[av]
4 Not so with the wicked!
Instead[aw] they are like wind-driven chaff.[ax]
5 For this reason[ay] the wicked cannot withstand[az] judgment,[ba]
nor can sinners join the assembly of the godly.[bb]
6 Certainly[bc] the Lord guards the way of the godly,[bd]
but the way of the wicked ends in destruction.[be]
Psalm 2[bf]
2 Why[bg] do the nations rebel?[bh]
Why[bi] are the countries[bj] devising[bk] plots that will fail?[bl]
2 The kings of the earth[bm] form a united front;[bn]
the rulers collaborate[bo]
against the Lord and his anointed king.[bp]
3 They say,[bq] “Let’s tear off the shackles they’ve put on us.[br]
Let’s free ourselves from[bs] their ropes.”
4 The one enthroned[bt] in heaven laughs in disgust;[bu]
the Lord taunts[bv] them.
5 Then he angrily speaks to them
and terrifies them in his rage,[bw] saying,[bx]
6 “I myself[by] have installed[bz] my king
on Zion, my holy hill.”
7 The king says,[ca] “I will announce the Lord’s decree. He said to me:[cb]
‘You are my son.[cc] This very day I have become your father.
8 Ask me,
and I will give you the nations as your inheritance,[cd]
the ends of the earth as your personal property.
9 You will break them[ce] with an iron scepter;[cf]
you will smash them like a potter’s jar.’”[cg]
10 So now, you kings, do what is wise;[ch]
you rulers of the earth, submit to correction.[ci]
11 Serve[cj] the Lord in fear.
Repent in terror.[ck]
12 Give sincere homage.[cl]
Otherwise he[cm] will be angry,[cn]
and you will die because of your behavior,[co]
when his anger quickly ignites.[cp]
How blessed[cq] are all who take shelter in him![cr]
Psalm 3[cs]
A psalm of David, written when he fled from his son Absalom.[ct]
3 Lord, how[cu] numerous are my enemies!
Many attack me.[cv]
2 Many say about me,
“God will not deliver him.”[cw] (Selah)[cx]
3 But you, Lord, are a shield that protects me;[cy]
you are my glory[cz] and the one who restores me.[da]
4 To the Lord I cried out,[db]
and he answered me from his holy hill.[dc] (Selah)
5 I rested and slept;
I awoke,[dd] for the Lord protects[de] me.
6 I am not afraid[df] of the multitude of people[dg]
who attack me from all directions.[dh]
7 Rise up,[di] Lord!
Deliver me, my God!
Yes,[dj] you will strike[dk] all my enemies on the jaw;
you will break the teeth[dl] of the wicked.[dm]
8 The Lord delivers;[dn]
you show favor to your people.[do] (Selah)
Psalm 4[dp]
For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a psalm of David.
4 When I call out, answer me,
O God who vindicates me.[dq]
Though I am hemmed in, you will lead me into a wide, open place.[dr]
Have mercy on me[ds] and respond to[dt] my prayer.
2 You men,[du] how long will you try to turn my honor into shame?[dv]
How long[dw] will you love what is worthless[dx]
and search for what is deceptive?[dy] (Selah)
3 Realize that[dz] the Lord shows the godly special favor;[ea]
the Lord responds[eb] when I cry out to him.
4 Tremble with fear and do not sin.[ec]
Meditate as you lie in bed, and repent of your ways.[ed] (Selah)
5 Offer the prescribed sacrifices[ee]
and trust in the Lord.[ef]
6 Many say, “Who can show us anything good?”
Smile upon us, Lord![eg]
7 You make me happier[eh]
than those who have abundant grain and wine.[ei]
8 I will lie down and sleep peacefully,[ej]
for you, Lord, make me safe and secure.[ek]
Psalm 5[el]
For the music director, to be accompanied by wind instruments;[em] a psalm of David.
5 Listen to what I say,[en] Lord!
Carefully consider my complaint![eo]
2 Pay attention to my cry for help,
my King and my God,
for I am praying to you!
3 Lord, in the morning[ep] you will hear[eq] me;[er]
in the morning I will present my case to you[es] and then wait expectantly for an answer.[et]
4 Certainly[eu] you are not a God who approves of evil;[ev]
evil people[ew] cannot dwell with you.[ex]
5 Arrogant people cannot stand in your presence;[ey]
you hate[ez] all who behave wickedly.[fa]
6 You destroy[fb] liars;[fc]
the Lord despises[fd] violent and deceitful people.[fe]
7 But as for me,[ff] because of your great faithfulness I will enter your house;[fg]
I will bow down toward your holy temple as I worship you.[fh]
8 Lord, lead me in your righteousness[fi]
because of those who wait to ambush me,[fj]
remove the obstacles in the way in which you are guiding me.[fk]
9 For[fl] they do not speak the truth;[fm]
their stomachs are like the place of destruction,[fn]
their throats like an open grave,[fo]
their tongues like a steep slope leading into it.[fp]
10 Condemn them,[fq] O God!
May their own schemes be their downfall.[fr]
Drive them away[fs] because of their many acts of insurrection,[ft]
for they have rebelled against you.
11 But may all who take shelter[fu] in you be happy.[fv]
May they continually[fw] shout for joy.[fx]
Shelter them[fy] so that those who are loyal to you[fz] may rejoice.[ga]
12 Certainly[gb] you reward[gc] the godly,[gd] Lord.
Like a shield you protect[ge] them[gf] in your good favor.[gg]
Psalm 6[gh]
For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments, according to the sheminith style;[gi] a psalm of David.
6 Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger.
Do not discipline me in your raging fury.[gj]
2 Have mercy on me,[gk] Lord, for I am frail.
Heal me, Lord, for my bones are shaking.[gl]
3 I am absolutely terrified,[gm]
and you, Lord—how long will this continue?[gn]
4 Relent, Lord, rescue me![go]
Deliver me because of your faithfulness.[gp]
5 For no one remembers you in the realm of death.[gq]
In Sheol who gives you thanks?[gr]
6 I am exhausted as I groan.
All night long I drench my bed in tears;[gs]
my tears saturate the cushion beneath me.[gt]
7 My eyes[gu] grow dim[gv] from suffering;
they grow weak[gw] because of all my enemies.[gx]
8 Turn back from me, all you who behave wickedly,[gy]
for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.[gz]
9 The Lord has heard my appeal for mercy;
the Lord has accepted[ha] my prayer.
10 They will be humiliated[hb] and absolutely terrified.[hc]
All my enemies will turn back and be suddenly humiliated.
Psalm 7[hd]
A musical composition[he] by David, which he sang to the Lord concerning[hf] a Benjaminite named Cush.[hg]
7 O Lord my God, in you I have taken shelter.[hh]
Deliver me from all who chase me. Rescue me!
2 Otherwise they will rip[hi] me[hj] to shreds like a lion;
they will tear me to bits and no one will be able to rescue me.[hk]
3 O Lord my God, if I have done what they say,[hl]
or am guilty of unjust actions,[hm]
4 or have wronged my ally,[hn]
or helped his lawless enemy,[ho]
5 may an enemy relentlessly chase[hp] me[hq] and catch me;[hr]
may he trample me to death[hs]
and leave me lying dishonored in the dust.[ht] (Selah)
6 Stand up angrily,[hu] Lord.
Rise up with raging fury against my enemies.[hv]
Wake up for my sake, and execute the judgment you have decreed for them.[hw]
7 The countries are assembled all around you;[hx]
take once more your rightful place over them.[hy]
8 The Lord judges the nations.[hz]
Vindicate me, Lord, because I am innocent,[ia]
because I am blameless,[ib] O Exalted One.[ic]
9 May the evil deeds of the wicked[id] come to an end.[ie]
But make the innocent[if] secure,[ig]
O righteous God,
you who examine[ih] inner thoughts and motives.[ii]
10 The Exalted God is my shield,[ij]
the one who delivers the morally upright.[ik]
11 God is a just judge;
he is angry throughout the day.[il]
12 If a person[im] does not repent, God will wield his sword.[in]
He has prepared to shoot his bow.[io]
13 He has prepared deadly weapons to use against him;[ip]
he gets ready to shoot flaming arrows.[iq]
14 See the one who is pregnant with wickedness,
who conceives destructive plans,
and gives birth to harmful lies—
15 he digs a pit[ir]
and then falls into the hole he has made.[is]
16 He becomes the victim of his own destructive plans[it]—
and the violence he intended for others falls on his own head.[iu]
17 I will thank the Lord for[iv] his justice;
I will sing praises to the Lord Most High![iw]
Psalm 8[ix]
For the music director, according to the gittith style;[iy] a psalm of David.
8 O Lord, our Lord,[iz]
how magnificent[ja] is your reputation[jb] throughout the earth!
You reveal your majesty in the heavens above.[jc]
2 From the mouths of children and nursing babies
you have ordained praise on account of your adversaries,[jd]
so that you might put an end to the vindictive enemy.[je]
3 When I look up at the heavens, which your fingers made,
and see the moon and the stars, which you set in place,[jf]
4 Of what importance is the human race,[jg] that you should notice[jh] them?
Of what importance is mankind,[ji] that you should pay attention to them?[jj]
5 You made them[jk] a little less than[jl] the heavenly beings.[jm]
You crowned mankind[jn] with honor and majesty.[jo]
6 you appoint them to rule over your creation;[jp]
you have placed[jq] everything under their authority,[jr]
7 including all the sheep and cattle,
as well as the wild animals,[js]
8 the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea,
and everything that moves through the currents[jt] of the seas.
9 O Lord, our Lord,[ju]
how magnificent[jv] is your reputation[jw] throughout the earth![jx]
Psalm 9[jy]
For the music director, according to the alumoth-labben style;[jz] a psalm of David.
9 I will thank the Lord with all my heart!
I will tell about all your amazing deeds.[ka]
2 I will be happy and rejoice in you.
I will sing praises to you, O Most High.[kb]
3 When my enemies turn back,
they trip and are defeated[kc] before you.
4 For you defended my just cause;[kd]
from your throne you pronounced a just decision.[ke]
5 You terrified the nations with your battle cry.[kf]
You destroyed the wicked;[kg]
you permanently wiped out all memory of them.[kh]
6 The enemy’s cities have been reduced to permanent ruins.[ki]
You destroyed their cities;[kj]
all memory of the enemies has perished.[kk]
7 But the Lord[kl] rules[km] forever;
he reigns in a just manner.[kn]
8 He judges the world fairly;
he makes just legal decisions for the nations.[ko]
9 Consequently[kp] the Lord provides safety for the oppressed;[kq]
he provides safety in times of trouble.[kr]
10 Your loyal followers trust in you,[ks]
for you, Lord, do not abandon those who seek your help.[kt]
11 Sing praises to the Lord, who rules[ku] in Zion.
Tell the nations what he has done.[kv]
12 For the one who takes revenge against murderers took notice of the oppressed;[kw]
he did not overlook[kx] their cry for help[ky]
13 when they prayed:[kz]
“Have mercy on me,[la] Lord!
See how I am oppressed by those who hate me,[lb]
O one who can snatch me away[lc] from the gates of death!
14 Then I will[ld] tell about all your praiseworthy acts;[le]
in the gates of Daughter Zion[lf] I will rejoice because of your deliverance.”[lg]
15 The nations fell[lh] into the pit they had made;
their feet were caught in the net they had hidden.[li]
16 The Lord revealed himself;
he accomplished justice.
The wicked were ensnared by their own actions.[lj] (Higgaion.[lk] Selah)
17 The wicked are turned back and sent to Sheol;[ll]
this is the destiny of[lm] all the nations that ignore[ln] God,
18 for the needy are not permanently ignored,[lo]
the hopes of the oppressed are not forever dashed.[lp]
19 Rise up, Lord![lq]
Don’t let men be defiant.[lr]
May the nations be judged in your presence.
20 Terrify them, Lord.[ls]
Let the nations know they are mere mortals.[lt] (Selah)
Psalm 10[lu]
10 Why, Lord, do you stand far off?
Why do you pay no attention during times of trouble?[lv]
2 The wicked arrogantly chase the oppressed;[lw]
the oppressed are trapped[lx] by the schemes the wicked have dreamed up.[ly]
3 Yes,[lz] the wicked man[ma] boasts because he gets what he wants;[mb]
the one who robs others[mc] curses[md] and[me] rejects the Lord.[mf]
4 The wicked man is so arrogant he always thinks,
“God won’t hold me accountable; he doesn’t care.”[mg]
5 He is secure at all times.[mh]
He has no regard for your commands;[mi]
he disdains all his enemies.[mj]
6 He says to himself,[mk]
“I will never[ml] be shaken,
because I experience no calamity.”[mm]
7 His mouth is full of curses and deceptive, harmful words;[mn]
his tongue injures and destroys.[mo]
8 He waits in ambush near the villages;[mp]
in hidden places he kills the innocent.
His eyes look for some unfortunate victim.[mq]
9 He lies in ambush in a hidden place, like a lion in a thicket.[mr]
He lies in ambush, waiting to catch[ms] the oppressed;
he catches the oppressed[mt] by pulling in his net.[mu]
10 His victims are crushed and beaten down;
they are trapped in his sturdy nets.[mv]
11 He says to himself,[mw]
“God overlooks it;
he does not pay attention;
he never notices.”[mx]
12 Rise up, Lord![my]
O God, strike him down.[mz]
Do not forget the oppressed.
13 Why does the wicked man reject God?[na]
He says to himself,[nb] “You[nc] will not hold me accountable.”[nd]
14 You have taken notice,[ne]
for[nf] you always see[ng] one who inflicts pain and suffering.[nh]
The unfortunate victim entrusts his cause to you;[ni]
you deliver[nj] the fatherless.[nk]
15 Break the arm[nl] of the wicked and evil man.
Hold him accountable for his wicked deeds,[nm]
which he thought you would not discover.[nn]
16 The Lord rules forever![no]
The nations are driven out of his land.[np]
17 Lord, you have heard[nq] the request[nr] of the oppressed;
you make them feel secure because you listen to their prayer.[ns]
18 You defend[nt] the fatherless and oppressed,[nu]
so that mere mortals may no longer terrorize them.[nv]
Psalm 11[nw]
For the music director, by David.
11 In the Lord I have taken shelter.[nx]
How can you say to me,[ny]
“Flee to a mountain like a bird.[nz]
2 For look, the wicked[oa] prepare[ob] their bows,[oc]
they put their arrows on the strings,
to shoot in the darkness[od] at the morally upright.[oe]
3 When the foundations[of] are destroyed,
what can the godly[og] accomplish?”[oh]
4 The Lord is in his holy temple;[oi]
the Lord’s throne is in heaven.[oj]
His eyes[ok] watch;[ol]
his eyes[om] examine[on] all people.[oo]
5 The Lord approves of[op] the godly,[oq]
but he[or] hates[os] the wicked and those who love to do violence.[ot]
6 May he rain down[ou] burning coals[ov] and brimstone[ow] on the wicked!
A whirlwind is what they deserve.[ox]
7 Certainly[oy] the Lord is just;[oz]
he rewards godly deeds.[pa]
The upright will experience his favor.[pb]
Psalm 12[pc]
For the music director, according to the sheminith style;[pd] a psalm of David.
12 Deliver, Lord!
For the godly[pe] have disappeared;[pf]
people of integrity[pg] have vanished.[ph]
2 People lie to one another;[pi]
they flatter and deceive.[pj]
3 May the Lord cut off[pk] all flattering lips,
and the tongue that boasts![pl]
4 They say,[pm] “We speak persuasively;[pn]
we know how to flatter and boast.[po]
Who is our master?”[pp]
5 “Because of the violence done to the oppressed,[pq]
because of the painful cries[pr] of the needy,
I will spring into action,”[ps] says the Lord.
“I will provide the safety they so desperately desire.”[pt]
6 The Lord’s words are absolutely reliable.[pu]
They are as untainted as silver purified in a furnace on the ground,
where it is thoroughly refined.[pv]
7 You, Lord, will protect them;[pw]
you will continually shelter each one from these evil people,[px]
8 for the wicked seem to be everywhere,[py]
when people promote evil.[pz]
Psalm 13[qa]
For the music director, a psalm of David.
13 How long, Lord, will you continue to ignore me?[qb]
How long will you pay no attention to me?[qc]
2 How long must I worry,[qd]
and suffer in broad daylight?[qe]
How long will my enemy gloat over me?[qf]
3 Look at me![qg] Answer me, O Lord my God!
Revive me,[qh] or else I will die.[qi]
4 Then[qj] my enemy will say, “I have defeated him.”
Then[qk] my foes will rejoice because I am shaken.
5 But I[ql] trust in your faithfulness.
May I rejoice because of your deliverance.[qm]
6 I will sing praises[qn] to the Lord
when he vindicates me.[qo]
Psalm 14[qp]
For the music director, by David.
14 Fools say to themselves,[qq] “There is no God.”[qr]
They sin and commit evil deeds;[qs]
none of them does what is right.[qt]
2 The Lord looks down from heaven[qu] at the human race,[qv]
to see if there is anyone who is wise[qw] and seeks God.[qx]
3 Everyone rejects God;[qy]
they are all morally corrupt.[qz]
None of them does what is right,[ra]
not even one.
4 All those who behave wickedly[rb] do not understand—[rc]
those who devour my people as if they were eating bread,
and do not call out to the Lord.
5 They are absolutely terrified,[rd]
for God defends the godly.[re]
6 You want to humiliate the oppressed,[rf]
even though[rg] the Lord is their[rh] shelter.
7 I wish the deliverance[ri] of Israel would come from Zion!
When the Lord restores the well-being of his people,[rj]
may Jacob rejoice,[rk]
may Israel be happy![rl]
Psalm 15[rm]
A psalm of David.
15 Lord, who may be a guest in your home?[rn]
Who may live on your holy hill?[ro]
2 Whoever lives a blameless life,[rp]
does what is right,
and speaks honestly.[rq]
3 He[rr] does not slander,[rs]
or do harm to others,[rt]
or insult his neighbor.[ru]
4 He despises a reprobate,[rv]
but honors the Lord’s loyal followers.[rw]
He makes firm commitments and does not renege on his promise.[rx]
5 He does not charge interest when he lends his money.[ry]
He does not take bribes to testify against the innocent.[rz]
The one who lives like this[sa] will never be shaken.
Psalm 16[sb]
A prayer[sc] of David.
16 Protect me, O God, for I have taken shelter in you.[sd]
2 I say to the Lord, “You are the Lord,
my only source of well-being.”[se]
3 As for God’s chosen people who are in the land,
and the leading officials I admired so much[sf]—
4 their troubles multiply;
they desire other gods.[sg]
I will not pour out drink offerings of blood to their gods,[sh]
nor will I make vows in the name of their gods.[si]
5 Lord, you give me stability and prosperity;[sj]
you make my future secure.[sk]
6 It is as if I have been given fertile fields
or received a beautiful tract of land.[sl]
7 I will praise[sm] the Lord who[sn] guides[so] me;
yes, during the night I reflect and learn.[sp]
8 I constantly trust in the Lord;[sq]
because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
9 So my heart rejoices
and I am happy;[sr]
my life is safe.[ss]
10 You will not abandon me[st] to Sheol;[su]
you will not allow your faithful follower[sv] to see[sw] the Pit.[sx]
11 You lead me in[sy] the path of life.[sz]
I experience absolute joy in your presence;[ta]
you always give me sheer delight.[tb]
Psalm 17[tc]
A prayer of David.
17 Lord, consider my just cause.[td]
Pay attention to my cry for help.
Listen to the prayer
I sincerely offer.[te]
2 Make a just decision on my behalf.[tf]
Decide what is right.[tg]
3 You have scrutinized my inner motives;[th]
you have examined me during the night.[ti]
You have carefully evaluated me, but you find no sin.
I am determined I will say nothing sinful.[tj]
4 As for the actions of people[tk]—
just as you have commanded,
I have not followed in the footsteps of violent men.[tl]
5 I carefully obey your commands;[tm]
I do not deviate from them.[tn]
6 I call to you because you will answer me, O God.
Listen to me![to]
Hear what I say![tp]
7 Accomplish awesome, faithful deeds,[tq]
you who powerfully deliver those who look to you for protection from their enemies.[tr]
8 Protect me as you would protect the pupil of your eye.[ts]
Hide me in the shadow of your wings.[tt]
9 Protect me from[tu] the wicked men who attack[tv] me,
my enemies who crowd around me for the kill.[tw]
10 They are calloused;[tx]
they speak arrogantly.[ty]
11 They attack me, now they surround me;[tz]
they intend to throw me to the ground.[ua]
12 He[ub] is like a lion[uc] that wants to tear its prey to bits,[ud]
like a young lion crouching[ue] in hidden places.
13 Rise up, Lord!
Confront him.[uf] Knock him down.[ug]
Use your sword to rescue me from the wicked man.[uh]
14 Lord, use your power to deliver me from these murderers,[ui]
from the murderers of this world.[uj]
They enjoy prosperity;[uk]
you overwhelm them with the riches they desire.[ul]
They have many children,
and leave their wealth to their offspring.[um]
15 As for me, because I am innocent I will see your face;[un]
when I awake you will reveal yourself to me.[uo]
Psalm 18[up]
For the music director, by the Lord’s servant David, who sang[uq] to the Lord the words of this song when[ur] the Lord rescued him from the power[us] of all his enemies, including Saul.[ut]
18 He said:[uu]
“I love[uv] you, Lord, my source of strength![uw]
2 The Lord is my high ridge,[ux] my stronghold,[uy] my deliverer.
My God is my rocky summit where[uz] I take shelter,[va]
my shield, the horn that saves me,[vb] and my refuge.[vc]
3 I called[vd] to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,[ve]
and I was delivered from my enemies.
4 The waves[vf] of death engulfed me,
the currents[vg] of chaos[vh] overwhelmed me.[vi]
5 The ropes of Sheol tightened around me,[vj]
the snares of death trapped me.[vk]
6 In my distress I called to the Lord;
I cried out to my God.[vl]
From his heavenly temple[vm] he heard my voice;
he listened to my cry for help.[vn]
7 The earth heaved and shook.[vo]
The roots of the mountains[vp] trembled;[vq]
they heaved because he was angry.
8 Smoke ascended from[vr] his nose;[vs]
fire devoured as it came from his mouth.[vt]
He hurled down fiery coals.[vu]
9 He made the sky sink[vv] as he descended;
a thick cloud was under his feet.
10 He mounted[vw] a winged angel[vx] and flew;
he glided[vy] on the wings of the wind.[vz]
11 He shrouded himself in darkness,[wa]
in thick rain clouds.[wb]
12 From the brightness in front of him came
hail and fiery coals.[wc]
13 The Lord thundered[wd] in[we] the sky;
the Most High[wf] shouted.[wg]
14 He shot his[wh] arrows and scattered them,[wi]
many lightning bolts[wj] and routed them.[wk]
15 The depths[wl] of the sea[wm] were exposed;
the inner regions[wn] of the world were uncovered
by[wo] your battle cry,[wp] Lord,
by the powerful breath from your nose.[wq]
16 He reached down[wr] from above and took hold of me;
he pulled me from the surging water.[ws]
17 He rescued me from my strong enemy,[wt]
from those who hate me,
for they were too strong for me.
18 They confronted[wu] me in my day of calamity,
but the Lord helped me.[wv]
19 He brought me out into a wide open place;
he delivered me because he was pleased with me.[ww]
20 The Lord repaid[wx] me for my godly deeds;[wy]
he rewarded[wz] my blameless behavior.[xa]
21 For I have obeyed the Lord’s commands;[xb]
I have not rebelled against my God.[xc]
22 For I am aware of all his regulations,[xd]
and I do not reject his rules.[xe]
23 I was innocent before him,
and kept myself from sinning.[xf]
24 The Lord rewarded me for my godly deeds;[xg]
he took notice of my blameless behavior.[xh]
25 You prove to be loyal[xi] to one who is faithful;[xj]
you prove to be trustworthy[xk] to one who is innocent.[xl]
26 You prove to be reliable[xm] to one who is blameless,
but you prove to be deceptive[xn] to one who is perverse.[xo]
27 For you deliver oppressed[xp] people,
but you bring down those who have a proud look.[xq]
28 Indeed,[xr] you light my lamp, Lord.[xs]
My God[xt] illuminates the darkness around me.[xu]
29 Indeed,[xv] with your help[xw] I can charge against[xx] an army;[xy]
by my God’s power[xz] I can jump over a wall.[ya]
30 The one true God acts in a faithful manner;[yb]
the Lord’s promise[yc] is reliable.[yd]
He is a shield to all who take shelter[ye] in him.
31 Indeed,[yf] who is God besides the Lord?
Who is a protector[yg] besides our God?[yh]
32 The one true God[yi] gives[yj] me strength;[yk]
he removes[yl] the obstacles in my way.[ym]
33 He gives me the agility of a deer;[yn]
he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain.[yo]
34 He trains my hands for battle;[yp]
my arms can bend even the strongest bow.[yq]
35 You give me your protective shield;[yr]
your right hand supports me.[ys]
Your willingness to help[yt] enables me to prevail.[yu]
36 You widen my path;[yv]
my feet[yw] do not slip.
37 I chase my enemies and catch[yx] them;
I do not turn back until I wipe them out.
38 I beat them[yy] to death;[yz]
they fall at my feet.[za]
39 You give me strength[zb] for battle;
you make my foes kneel before me.[zc]
40 You make my enemies retreat;[zd]
I destroy those who hate me.[ze]
41 They cry out, but there is no one to help them;[zf]
they cry out to the Lord,[zg] but he does not answer them.
42 I grind them as fine windblown dust;[zh]
I beat them underfoot[zi] like clay[zj] in the streets.
43 You rescue me from a hostile army.[zk]
You make me[zl] a leader of nations;
people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects.[zm]
44 When they hear of my exploits, they submit to me.[zn]
Foreigners are powerless[zo] before me.
45 Foreigners lose their courage;[zp]
they shake with fear[zq] as they leave[zr] their strongholds.[zs]
46 The Lord is alive![zt]
My Protector[zu] is praiseworthy.[zv]
The God who delivers me[zw] is exalted as king.[zx]
47 The one true God[zy] completely vindicates me;[zz]
he makes nations submit to me.[aaa]
48 He delivers me[aab] from my enemies.
You snatch me away[aac] from those who attack me;[aad]
you rescue me from violent men.
49 So I will give you thanks before the nations,[aae] O Lord.
I will sing praises to you.[aaf]
50 He[aag] gives his king magnificent victories;[aah]
he is faithful[aai] to his chosen ruler,[aaj]
to David and his descendants[aak] forever.”[aal]
Psalm 19[aam]
For the music director, a psalm of David.
19 The heavens declare the glory of God;[aan]
the sky displays his handiwork.[aao]
2 Day after day it speaks out;[aap]
night after night it reveals his greatness.[aaq]
3 There is no actual speech or word,
nor is its[aar] voice literally heard.
4 Yet its voice[aas] echoes[aat] throughout the earth;
its[aau] words carry[aav] to the distant horizon.[aaw]
In the sky[aax] he has pitched a tent for the sun.[aay]
5 Like a bridegroom it emerges[aaz] from its chamber;[aba]
like a strong man it enjoys[abb] running its course.[abc]
6 It emerges from the distant horizon,[abd]
and goes from one end of the sky to the other;[abe]
nothing can escape[abf] its heat.
7 The law of the Lord is perfect
and preserves one’s life.[abg]
The rules set down by the Lord[abh] are reliable[abi]
and impart wisdom to the inexperienced.[abj]
8 The Lord’s precepts are fair[abk]
and make one joyful.[abl]
The Lord’s commands[abm] are pure[abn]
and give insight for life.[abo]
9 The commands to fear the Lord are right[abp]
and endure forever.[abq]
The judgments given by the Lord are trustworthy
and absolutely just.[abr]
10 They are of greater value[abs] than gold,
than even a great amount of pure gold;
they bring greater delight[abt] than honey,
than even the sweetest honey from a honeycomb.
11 Yes, your servant finds moral guidance there;[abu]
those who obey them receive a rich reward.[abv]
12 Who can know all his errors?[abw]
Please do not punish me for sins I am unaware of.[abx]
13 Moreover, keep me from committing flagrant sins;[aby]
do not allow such sins to control me.[abz]
Then I will be blameless,
and innocent of blatant[aca] rebellion.
14 May my words and my thoughts
be acceptable in your sight,[acb]
O Lord, my sheltering rock[acc] and my redeemer.[acd]
Psalm 20[ace]
For the music director, a psalm of David.
20 May the Lord answer[acf] you[acg] when you are in trouble;[ach]
may the God of Jacob[aci] make you secure.
2 May he send you help from his temple;[acj]
from Zion may he give you support.
3 May he take notice of[ack] all your offerings;
may he accept[acl] your burnt sacrifice. (Selah)
4 May he grant your heart’s desire;[acm]
may he bring all your plans to pass.[acn]
5 Then we will shout for joy over your[aco] victory;
we will rejoice[acp] in the name of our God.
May the Lord grant all your requests.
6 Now I am sure[acq] that the Lord will deliver[acr] his chosen king;[acs]
he will intervene for him[act] from his holy, heavenly temple,[acu]
and display his mighty ability to deliver.[acv]
7 Some trust in chariots and others in horses,[acw]
but we[acx] depend on[acy] the Lord our God.
8 They will fall down,[acz]
but we[ada] will stand firm.[adb]
9 The Lord will deliver the king;[adc]
he will answer us[add] when we call to him for help![ade]
Psalm 21[adf]
For the music director, a psalm of David.
21 O Lord, the king rejoices in the strength you give;[adg]
he takes great delight in the deliverance you provide.[adh]
2 You grant[adi] him his heart’s desire;
you do not refuse his request.[adj] (Selah)
3 For you bring him[adk] rich[adl] blessings;[adm]
you place a golden crown on his head.
4 He asked you to sustain his life,[adn]
and you have granted him long life and an enduring dynasty.[ado]
5 Your deliverance brings him great honor;[adp]
you give him majestic splendor.[adq]
6 For you grant him lasting blessings;
you give him great joy by allowing him into your presence.[adr]
7 For the king trusts[ads] in the Lord,
and because of the Most High’s[adt] faithfulness he is not shaken.[adu]
8 You[adv] prevail over[adw] all your enemies;
your power is too great for those who hate you.[adx]
9 You burn them up like a fiery furnace[ady] when you appear.[adz]
The Lord angrily devours them;[aea]
the fire consumes them.
10 You destroy their offspring[aeb] from the earth,
their descendants[aec] from among the human race.[aed]
11 Yes,[aee] they intend to do you harm;[aef]
they dream up a scheme,[aeg] but they do not succeed.[aeh]
12 For you make them retreat[aei]
when you aim your arrows at them.[aej]
13 Rise up, O Lord, in strength![aek]
We will sing and praise[ael] your power.
Psalm 22[aem]
For the music director, according to the tune “Morning Doe”;[aen] a psalm of David.
22 My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?[aeo]
I groan in prayer, but help seems far away.[aep]
2 My God, I cry out during the day,
but you do not answer,
and during the night my prayers do not let up.[aeq]
3 You are holy;
you sit as king receiving the praises of Israel.[aer]
4 In you our ancestors[aes] trusted;
they trusted in you[aet] and you rescued them.
5 To you they cried out, and they were saved;
in you they trusted and they were not disappointed.[aeu]
6 But I[aev] am a worm,[aew] not a man;[aex]
people insult me and despise me.[aey]
7 All who see me taunt[aez] me;
they mock me[afa] and shake their heads.[afb]
8 They say,[afc]
“Commit yourself[afd] to the Lord!
Let the Lord[afe] rescue him!
Let the Lord[aff] deliver him, for he delights in him.”[afg]
9 Yes, you are the one who brought me out[afh] from the womb
and made me feel secure on my mother’s breasts.
10 I have been dependent on you since birth;[afi]
from the time I came out of my mother’s womb you have been my God.[afj]
11 Do not remain far away from me,
for trouble is near and I have no one to help me.[afk]
12 Many bulls[afl] surround me;
powerful bulls of Bashan[afm] hem me in.
13 They[afn] open their mouths to devour me[afo]
like a roaring lion that rips its prey.[afp]
14 My strength drains away like water;[afq]
all my bones are dislocated.
My heart[afr] is like wax;
it melts away inside me.
15 The roof of my mouth[afs] is as dry as a piece of pottery;
my tongue sticks to my gums.[aft]
You[afu] set me in the dust of death.[afv]
16 Yes,[afw] wild dogs surround me—
a gang of evil men crowd around me;
like a lion they pin my hands and feet.[afx]
17 I can count[afy] all my bones;
my enemies[afz] are gloating over me in triumph.[aga]
18 They are dividing up my clothes among themselves;
they are rolling dice[agb] for my garments.
19 But you, O Lord, do not remain far away.
You are my source of strength.[agc] Hurry and help me![agd]
20 Deliver me[age] from the sword.
Save[agf] my life[agg] from the claws[agh] of the wild dogs.
21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lion,[agi]
and from the horns of the wild oxen.[agj]
You have answered me.[agk]
22 I will declare your name to my countrymen.[agl]
In the middle of the assembly I will praise you.
23 You loyal followers of the Lord,[agm] praise him.
All you descendants of Jacob, honor him.
All you descendants of Israel, stand in awe of him.[agn]
24 For he did not despise or detest the suffering[ago] of the oppressed.[agp]
He did not ignore him;[agq]
when he cried out to him, he responded.[agr]
25 You are the reason I offer praise[ags] in the great assembly;
I will fulfill my promises before the Lord’s loyal followers.[agt]
26 Let the oppressed eat and be filled.[agu]
Let those who seek his help praise the Lord.
May you[agv] live forever!
27 Let all the people of the earth acknowledge the Lord and turn to him.[agw]
Let all the nations[agx] worship you.[agy]
28 For the Lord is king[agz]
and rules over the nations.
29 All the thriving people[aha] of the earth will join the celebration and worship;[ahb]
all those who are descending into the grave[ahc] will bow before him,
including those who cannot preserve their lives.[ahd]
30 A whole generation[ahe] will serve him;
they will tell the next generation about the Lord.[ahf]
31 They will come and tell about his saving deeds;[ahg]
they will tell a future generation what he has accomplished.[ahh]
Psalm 23[ahi]
A psalm of David.
23 The Lord is my shepherd,[ahj]
I lack nothing.[ahk]
2 He takes me to lush pastures,[ahl]
he leads me to refreshing water.[ahm]
3 He restores my strength.[ahn]
He leads me down[aho] the right paths[ahp]
for the sake of his reputation.[ahq]
4 Even when I must walk through the darkest valley,[ahr]
I fear[ahs] no danger,[aht]
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff reassure me.[ahu]
5 You prepare a feast before me[ahv]
in plain sight of my enemies.
You refresh[ahw] my head with oil;
my cup is completely full.[ahx]
6 Surely your goodness and faithfulness[ahy] will pursue[ahz] me all my days,[aia]
and I will live in[aib] the Lord’s house[aic] for the rest of my life.[aid]
Psalm 24[aie]
A psalm of David.
24 The Lord owns the earth and all it contains,
the world and all who live in it.
2 For he set its foundation upon the seas,
and established[aif] it upon the ocean currents.[aig]
3 Who is allowed to ascend[aih] the mountain of the Lord?[aii]
Who may go up to his holy dwelling place?
4 The one whose deeds are blameless
and whose motives are pure,[aij]
who does not lie,[aik]
or make promises with no intention of keeping them.[ail]
5 Such godly people are rewarded by the Lord,[aim]
and vindicated by the God who delivers them.[ain]
6 Such purity characterizes the people who seek his favor,
Jacob’s descendants, who pray to him.[aio] (Selah)
7 Look up,[aip] you gates.
Rise up,[aiq] you eternal doors.
Then the majestic king[air] will enter.[ais]
8 Who is this majestic king?[ait]
The Lord who is strong and mighty.
The Lord who is mighty in battle.
9 Look up, you gates.
Rise up, you eternal doors.
Then the majestic king will enter.
10 Who is this majestic king?
The Lord of Heaven’s Armies.[aiu]
He is the majestic king. (Selah)
