Book of Common Prayer
Yahweh, Rescue My Soul
For the choir director. With stringed instruments. According to the [a]Sheminith. A Psalm of David.
6 O Yahweh, (A)do not reprove me in Your anger,
Nor discipline me in Your wrath.
2 Be gracious to me, O Yahweh, for I am (B)pining away;
(C)Heal me, O Yahweh, for (D)my bones are dismayed.
3 And my (E)soul is greatly dismayed;
But You, O Yahweh—(F)how long?
4 Return, O Yahweh, (G)rescue my [b]soul;
Save me because of Your lovingkindness.
5 For (H)there is no remembrance of You in death;
In Sheol who will give You thanks?
Yahweh Will Set the Needy in Safety
For the choir director. According to the [a]Sheminith. A Psalm of David.
12 Save, O Yahweh, for (A)the holy man ceases to be,
For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.
2 They (B)speak worthlessness to one another;
With a (C)flattering lip and with a double heart they speak.
3 May Yahweh cut off all flattering lips,
The tongue that (D)speaks great things;
4 Who (E)have said, “With our tongue we will prevail;
Our lips are [b]our own; who is lord over us?”
5 “Because of the (F)devastation of the afflicted, because of the groaning of the needy,
Now (G)I will arise,” says Yahweh; “I will (H)set him in the [c]safety for which he [d]longs.”
God of Vengeance, Shine Forth
94 O Yahweh, God of [a](A)vengeance,
God of [b]vengeance, [c](B)shine forth!
2 (C)Be lifted up, O (D)Judge of the earth,
Render recompense (E)to the proud.
3 How long shall the wicked, O Yahweh,
How long shall the (F)wicked exult?
4 They pour forth words, they (G)speak arrogantly;
All workers of iniquity (H)vaunt themselves.
5 They (I)crush Your people, O Yahweh,
And (J)afflict Your inheritance.
6 They (K)slay the widow and the sojourner
And murder the orphans.
7 (L)They have said, “Yah does not see,
Nor does the God of Jacob discern.”
8 Discern, you (M)senseless among the people;
And when will you have insight, (N)you fools?
9 He who (O)planted the ear, [d]does He not hear?
He who formed the eye, [e]does He not see?
10 He who [f](P)disciplines the nations, will He not rebuke,
Even He who (Q)teaches man knowledge?
11 Yahweh (R)knows the thoughts of man,
[g]That they are vanity.
12 Blessed is the man whom (S)You discipline, O Yah,
And (T)whom You teach out of Your law;
13 That You may grant him (U)calm from the (V)days of calamity,
Until (W)a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For (X)Yahweh will not abandon His people,
Nor will He (Y)forsake His inheritance.
15 For [h](Z)judgment will [i]again be righteous,
And all the upright in heart will [j]follow it.
16 Who will (AA)arise for me against evildoers?
Who will take his stand for me (AB)against workers of iniquity?
17 If (AC)Yahweh had not been my help,
My soul would soon have dwelt in the abode of silence.
18 If I should say, “(AD)My foot has stumbled,”
Your lovingkindness, O Yahweh, will hold me up.
19 When my anxious thoughts [k]multiply within me,
Your (AE)consolations delight my soul.
20 Can a [l](AF)throne of destruction be allied with You,
One (AG)which forms [m]trouble by statute?
21 They (AH)band themselves together against the [n]life of the righteous
And (AI)condemn [o]the innocent to death.
22 But Yahweh has been my (AJ)stronghold,
And my God the (AK)rock of my refuge.
23 He has (AL)brought back their [p]iniquity upon them
And will [q](AM)destroy them in their evil;
Yahweh our God will [r]destroy them.
Jeremiah Pleads for Vengeance
10 (A)Woe to me, my mother, that you have borne me
As a (B)man of strife and a man of contention to all the land!
I have not (C)lent, nor have men lent money to me,
Yet everyone curses me.
11 Yahweh said, “Surely I will (D)set you free for purposes of good;
Surely I will cause the (E)enemy to intercede with you
In a time of disaster and a time of distress.
12 “Can anyone smash iron,
(F)Iron from the north, or bronze?
13 Your (G)wealth and your treasures
I will give for plunder (H)without cost,
Even for all your sins
And within all your borders.
14 Then I will cause your enemies to pass [a]it over
Into a (I)land you do not know,
For a (J)fire has been kindled in My anger;
It will burn upon you.”
15 (K)You who know, O Yahweh,
Remember me, take notice of me,
And (L)take vengeance for me on my persecutors.
Do not, in view of Your patience, take me away;
Know that (M)for Your sake I endure reproach.
16 Your words were found, and I (N)ate them,
And Your (O)words became for me joy and gladness in my heart,
For I have been (P)called by Your name,
O Yahweh God of hosts.
17 I (Q)did not sit in the circle of merrymakers,
Nor did I exult.
Because of Your hand upon me I sat (R)alone,
For You (S)filled me with indignation.
18 Why has my pain been perpetual
And my (T)wound incurable, refusing to be healed?
Will You indeed be to me (U)like a deceptive stream
With water that is unreliable?
Yahweh’s Answer
19 Therefore thus says Yahweh,
“(V)If you return, then I will cause you to return—
(W)Before Me you will stand;
And (X)if you extract the precious from the worthless,
You will become [b]My mouthpiece.
They for their part may turn to you,
But as for you, you must not turn to them.
20 Then I will (Y)make you to this people
A fortified wall of bronze;
And they will fight against you,
But they will not prevail against you,
For (Z)I am with you to save you
And deliver you,” declares Yahweh.
21 “So I will (AA)deliver you from the hand of the evil ones,
And I will (AB)redeem you from the [c]grasp of the ruthless ones.”
15 Let us therefore, as many as are [a](A)perfect, think this way; and if in anything you (B)think differently, (C)God will reveal that also to you. 16 However, let us keep [b](D)walking in step with the same standard to which we have attained.
17 Brothers, (E)join in following my example, and (F)look for those who walk according to the (G)pattern you have in us. 18 For (H)many walk—of whom I often told you, and now tell you even (I)crying—as enemies of (J)the cross of Christ, 19 whose end is destruction, whose god is their (K)stomach and (L)glory is in their shame, who (M)set their thoughts on earthly things. 20 For (N)our [c]citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly (O)wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will (P)transform [d]the body of our humble state into (Q)conformity with [e]the (R)body of His glory, (S)by His working through which He is able to even (T)subject all things to Himself.
Some Greeks Seek Jesus
20 Now there were some (A)Greeks among those who were going up to worship at (B)the feast; 21 these then came to (C)Philip, who was from (D)Bethsaida of Galilee, and began to ask him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip *came and *told (E)Andrew; Andrew and Philip *came and *told Jesus. 23 And Jesus *answered them, saying, “(F)The hour has come for the Son of Man to (G)be glorified. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, (H)unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 (I)He who loves his [a]life loses it, and he who (J)hates his [b]life in this world will keep it to life eternal. 26 If anyone [c]serves Me, he must follow Me; and (K)where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone [d]serves Me, the Father will (L)honor him.
