Book of Common Prayer
I Have Quieted My Soul
A Song of Ascents. Of David.
131 O Yahweh, my heart is not (A)exalted, and my eyes are not (B)raised high;
And I do not [a]involve myself in (C)great matters,
Or in matters (D)too marvelous for me.
2 Surely I have (E)soothed and quieted my soul,
Like a weaned (F)child with his mother,
Like a weaned child is my soul [b]within me.
3 O Israel, (G)wait for Yahweh
(H)From now until forever.
Yahweh Has Chosen Zion
A Song of Ascents.
132 Remember, O Yahweh, on David’s behalf,
All (I)his affliction;
2 How he swore to Yahweh
And vowed to (J)the Mighty One of Jacob,
3 “Surely I will not come into [c](K)my house,
Nor [d]lie in the [e]comfort of my bed;
4 I will not (L)give sleep to my eyes
Or slumber to my eyelids,
5 Until I find a (M)place for Yahweh,
[f]A dwelling place for (N)the Mighty One of Jacob.”
6 Behold, we heard of it in (O)Ephrathah,
We found it in the (P)fields of [g]Jaar.
7 Let us come into His [h](Q)dwelling place;
Let us (R)worship at the (S)footstool of His feet.
8 (T)Arise, O Yahweh, to Your (U)resting place,
You and the ark of Your (V)strength.
9 Let Your priests be (W)clothed with righteousness,
And let Your (X)holy ones sing for joy.
10 For the sake of David Your servant,
Do not turn away the face of Your (Y)anointed.
11 Yahweh has (Z)sworn to David
A truth from which He will not turn back:
“(AA)Of the fruit of your [i]body I will set upon your throne.
12 If your sons keep My covenant
And My testimony which I will teach them,
Their sons also shall (AB)sit upon your throne forever.”
13 For Yahweh has (AC)chosen Zion;
He has (AD)desired it for His habitation.
14 “This is My (AE)resting place forever;
Here I will (AF)inhabit, for I have desired it.
15 I will abundantly (AG)bless her provision;
I will (AH)satisfy her needy with bread.
16 Her (AI)priests also I will clothe with salvation,
And her (AJ)holy ones will sing loudly for joy.
17 There I will cause the (AK)horn of David to spring up;
I have prepared a (AL)lamp for Mine anointed.
18 His enemies I will (AM)clothe with shame,
But upon him, his (AN)crown shall blossom.”
How Good and Pleasant Is Unity
A Song of Ascents. Of David.
133 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For (AO)brothers to dwell together in unity!
2 It is like the good (AP)oil upon the head,
Coming down upon the beard,
Aaron’s beard,
Coming down upon the (AQ)edge of his robes.
3 It is like the (AR)dew of (AS)Hermon
Coming down upon the (AT)mountains of Zion;
For there, Yahweh (AU)commanded the blessing—(AV)life forever.
Rescue Me, O Yahweh, from Evil Men
For the choir director. A Psalm of David.
140 (A)Rescue me, O Yahweh, from evil men;
Guard me from (B)violent men
2 Who (C)think up evil things in their hearts;
They (D)continually stir up wars.
3 They (E)sharpen their tongues as a serpent;
(F)Poison of an asp is under their lips. [a]Selah.
4 (G)Keep me, O Yahweh, from the hands of the wicked;
(H)Guard me from violent men
Who [b]give thought to [c](I)trip up my steps.
5 The proud have (J)hidden a trap for me, and cords;
They have spread a (K)net by the [d]wayside;
They have set (L)snares for me. Selah.
6 I (M)said to Yahweh, “You are my God;
(N)Give ear, O Yahweh, to the (O)voice of my supplications.
7 O Yahweh, O Lord, (P)the strength of my salvation,
You have (Q)covered my head in the day of [e]battle.
8 Do not grant, O Yahweh, the (R)desires of the wicked;
Do not promote (S)his evil [f]scheme, that they not be exalted. Selah.
9 “As for the head of those who surround me,
May the (T)trouble from their lips cover them.
10 May (U)burning coals be shaken out upon them;
May He (V)cause them to fall into the fire,
Into [g]bottomless pits from which they (W)can never rise.
11 May a [h]slanderer not be established in the earth;
(X)May evil hunt the violent man [i]speedily.”
Give Heed to My Cry
A [a]Maskil of David. When he was [b]in the cave. A Prayer.
142 With my voice to Yahweh, I (A)cry aloud;
With my voice to Yahweh, I (B)make supplication.
2 I (C)pour out my complaint before Him;
I declare my (D)distress before Him.
3 When (E)my spirit [c]was faint within me,
You knew my path.
In the way where I walk
They have (F)hidden a trap for me.
4 Look to the right and see;
That there is (G)no one who regards me;
(H)A way of escape has been destroyed from me;
(I)No one cares for my soul.
5 I cried out to You, O Yahweh;
I said, “You are (J)my refuge,
My (K)portion in the (L)land of the living.
6 (M)Give heed to my cry of lamentation,
For I am (N)brought very low;
Deliver me from my persecutors,
For they are too (O)strong for me.
7 (P)Bring my soul out of prison,
To give thanks to Your name;
The righteous will encircle me,
For You will (Q)deal bountifully with me.”
The Words of Yahweh Against Judah
26 In the beginning of the reign of (A)Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from Yahweh, saying, 2 “Thus says Yahweh, ‘(B)Stand in the court of the house of Yahweh, and you shall speak to all the cities of Judah who have (C)come to worship in the house of Yahweh (D)all the words that I have commanded you to speak to them. (E)Do not take away a word! 3 (F)Perhaps they will listen and everyone will turn from his evil way, that (G)I may [a]relent of the evil which I am devising to [b]bring against them because of the evil of their deeds.’ 4 And you will say to them, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “(H)If you will not listen to Me, to (I)walk in My law which I have given before you, 5 to listen to the words of (J)My slaves the prophets, whom I have been sending to you, rising up early and sending, but you have not listened, 6 then I will make this house like (K)Shiloh, and this city I will make a (L)curse to all the nations of the earth.”’”
Plot to Murder Jeremiah
7 The (M)priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of Yahweh. 8 Now it happened that when Jeremiah finished speaking all that Yahweh had commanded him to speak to all the people, the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him, saying, “(N)You must surely die! 9 Why have you prophesied in the name of Yahweh saying, ‘This house will be like Shiloh, and this city will be (O)laid waste, without inhabitant’?” And (P)all the people gathered about Jeremiah in the house of Yahweh.
10 When the (Q)officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king’s house to the house of Yahweh and sat in the (R)entrance of the New Gate of the house of Yahweh. 11 Then the priests and the prophets (S)spoke to the officials and to all the people, saying, “A (T)judgment of death for this man! For he has prophesied (U)against this city as you have heard in your hearing.”
12 Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and to all the people, saying, “(V)Yahweh sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that you have heard. 13 So now, (W)make good your ways and your deeds and listen to the voice of Yahweh your God; and Yahweh will [c]relent of the evil demise which He has spoken against you. 14 But as for me, behold, (X)I am in your hands; do with me as is good and right in your eyes. 15 Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring (Y)innocent blood on yourselves and on this city and on its inhabitants; for truly Yahweh has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing.”
Jeremiah Spared from Death
16 Then the officials and all the people (Z)said to the priests and to the prophets, “No (AA)judgment of death for this man! For he has spoken to us in the name of Yahweh our God.”
God Has Not Rejected Israel
11 I say then, has God (A)rejected His people? (B)May it never be! For (C)I too am an Israelite, a seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 [a](D)God has not rejected His people whom He (E)foreknew. (F)Or do you not know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel? 3 “Lord, (G)they have killed Your prophets, they have torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.” 4 But what does the divine response say to him? “(H)I have left for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” 5 In this way then, at the present time, (I)a remnant according to God’s [b]gracious choice has also come to be. 6 But (J)if it is by grace, it is no longer of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace.
7 What then? What (K)Israel is seeking, it has not obtained, but the chosen obtained it, and the rest were (L)hardened; 8 just as it is written,
“[c](M)God gave them a spirit of stupor,
Eyes to see not and ears to hear not,
Down to this very day.”
9 And David says,
“(N)Let their table become a snare and a trap,
And a stumbling block and a retribution to them.
10 (O)Let their eyes be darkened to see not,
And bend their backs forever.”
Gentiles Grafted In
11 (P)I say then, did they stumble so as to fall? (Q)May it never be! But by their transgression (R)salvation has come to the Gentiles, to (S)make them jealous. 12 Now if their transgression is riches for the world and their failure is riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their [d](T)fullness be!
19 (A)A division occurred again among the Jews because of these words. 20 And many of them were saying, “He (B)has a demon and (C)is insane. Why do you listen to Him?” 21 Others were saying, “These are not the words of someone (D)demon-possessed. (E)Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”
I and the Father Are One
22 At that time the Feast of the Dedication took place at Jerusalem; 23 it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple in the Portico of (F)Solomon. 24 (G)The Jews then gathered around Him, and were saying to Him, “How long [a]will You keep us in suspense? If You are the [b]Christ, tell us (H)openly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “(I)I told you, and you do not believe; (J)the works that I do in My Father’s name, these bear witness of Me. 26 But you do not believe because (K)you are not of My sheep. 27 My sheep (L)hear My voice, and (M)I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give (N)eternal life to them, and they will never perish—ever; and (O)no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 [c]My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 (P)I and the Father are [d]one.”
31 The Jews (Q)picked up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” 33 The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for (R)blasphemy; and because You, being a man, (S)make Yourself God.” 34 Jesus answered them, “Has it not been written in (T)your (U)Law, ‘(V)I said, you are gods’? 35 If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), 36 do you say of Him, whom the Father (W)sanctified and (X)sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘(Y)I am the Son of God’? 37 (Z)If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe (AA)the works, so that you may know and continue knowing that (AB)the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.” 39 Therefore (AC)they were seeking again to seize Him, and (AD)He eluded their grasp.
40 And He went away (AE)again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing, and He was staying there. 41 And many came to Him and were saying, “While John did no (AF)sign, yet (AG)everything John said about this man was true.” 42 (AH)And many believed in Him there.
