Book of Common Prayer
Do Not Hide Your Face from Me
A Prayer of the afflicted when he is faint and [a]pours out his complaint before Yahweh.
102 (A)O Yahweh, hear my prayer!
And let my cry for help (B)come to You.
2 (C)Do not hide Your face from me in the day of my distress;
(D)Incline Your ear to me;
In the day when I call (E)answer me quickly.
3 For my days (F)have [b]vanished in smoke,
And my (G)bones have been scorched like a hearth.
4 My heart (H)has been stricken like [c]grass and it has (I)dried up,
Indeed, I (J)forget to eat my bread.
5 Because of the sound of my groaning
My (K)bones [d]cling to my flesh.
6 I resemble a (L)pelican of the wilderness;
I have become like an owl of the waste places.
7 I (M)lie awake,
I have become like a lonely bird on a roof.
8 My enemies (N)have reproached me all day long;
Those who [e](O)ridicule me (P)swear against me.
9 For I have eaten ashes like bread
And (Q)mixed my drinks with weeping
10 (R)Because of Your indignation and Your wrath,
For You have (S)lifted me up and cast me away.
11 My days are like an (T)outstretched shadow,
And as for me, I (U)dry up like [f]grass.
12 But You, O Yahweh, [g](V)abide forever,
And the (W)remembrance of Your name [h]from generation to generation.
13 You will (X)arise and have (Y)compassion on Zion—
For (Z)it is time to be gracious to it,
For the (AA)appointed time has come.
14 For Your slaves [i]find pleasure in its stones
And show grace to its dust—
15 [j]So the [k](AB)nations will fear the name of Yahweh
And (AC)all the kings of the earth Your glory.
16 For Yahweh has (AD)built up Zion;
He has (AE)appeared in His glory.
17 He has (AF)turned toward the prayer of the [l]destitute
And has not despised their prayer.
18 [m]This will be (AG)written for the (AH)generation to come,
And (AI)a people yet to be created will praise Yah.
19 For He (AJ)looked down from His holy height;
(AK)From heaven Yahweh gazed [n]upon the earth,
20 To hear the (AL)groaning of the prisoner,
To (AM)set free [o]those who were doomed to death,
21 To (AN)recount the name of Yahweh in Zion
And His praise in Jerusalem,
22 When (AO)the peoples are gathered together,
And the kingdoms, to serve Yahweh.
23 He has afflicted my strength in the way;
He has (AP)shortened my days.
24 I say, “O my God, (AQ)do not take me away in the [p]midst of my days,
Your (AR)years are from generation to all generations.
25 Of old You (AS)founded the earth,
And the (AT)heavens are the work of Your hands.
26 [q]Even they will (AU)perish, but You will remain;
And all of them will wear out like a garment;
Like clothing You will change them and they will be changed.
27 But You are [r](AV)the same,
And Your years will not come to an end.
28 The (AW)children of Your slaves will dwell securely,
And their (AX)seed will be established before You.”
Give Heed to My Cry
A [a]Maskil of David. When he was [b]in the cave. A Prayer.
142 With my voice to Yahweh, I (A)cry aloud;
With my voice to Yahweh, I (B)make supplication.
2 I (C)pour out my complaint before Him;
I declare my (D)distress before Him.
3 When (E)my spirit [c]was faint within me,
You knew my path.
In the way where I walk
They have (F)hidden a trap for me.
4 Look to the right and see;
That there is (G)no one who regards me;
(H)A way of escape has been destroyed from me;
(I)No one cares for my soul.
5 I cried out to You, O Yahweh;
I said, “You are (J)my refuge,
My (K)portion in the (L)land of the living.
6 (M)Give heed to my cry of lamentation,
For I am (N)brought very low;
Deliver me from my persecutors,
For they are too (O)strong for me.
7 (P)Bring my soul out of prison,
To give thanks to Your name;
The righteous will encircle me,
For You will (Q)deal bountifully with me.”
My Soul Reaches for You
A Psalm of David.
143 O Yahweh, hear my prayer,
(R)Give ear to my supplications!
Answer me in Your (S)faithfulness, in Your (T)righteousness!
2 And (U)do not enter into judgment with Your slave,
For (V)no one living is righteous in Your sight.
3 For the enemy has pursued my soul;
He has crushed my life (W)to the ground;
He (X)has made me inhabit dark places, like those who have long been dead.
4 Therefore (Y)my spirit was faint within me;
My heart was [d](Z)appalled within me.
5 I (AA)remember the days of old;
I (AB)meditate on all You have done;
I (AC)muse on the work of Your hands.
6 I (AD)stretch out my hands to You;
My (AE)soul reaches for You like a weary land. [e]Selah.
7 (AF)Answer me quickly, O Yahweh, my (AG)spirit wastes away;
(AH)Do not hide Your face from me,
Or I will become like (AI)those who go down to the pit.
8 Cause me to hear Your (AJ)lovingkindness (AK)in the morning;
For I trust (AL)in You;
Cause me to know the (AM)way in which I should walk;
For to You I (AN)lift up my soul.
9 (AO)Deliver me from my enemies, O Yahweh,
I have concealed myself in You.
10 (AP)Teach me to do Your will,
For You are my God;
Let (AQ)Your good Spirit (AR)lead me on level [f]ground.
11 (AS)For the sake of Your name, O Yahweh, (AT)revive me.
(AU)In Your righteousness bring my soul out of distress.
12 And in Your lovingkindness, [g](AV)cut off my enemies
And cause all those who assail my soul to (AW)perish,
For (AX)I am Your slave.

10 The elders of the daughter of Zion
(A)Sit on the ground; they (B)are silent.
They have thrown (C)dust up on their heads;
They have girded themselves with (D)sackcloth.
The (E)virgins of Jerusalem
Have bowed their heads down to the ground.

11 My (F)eyes fail because of tears;
My [a](G)inmost being is greatly disturbed;
My [b](H)heart is poured out on the earth
(I)Because of the [c]destruction of the daughter of my people,
When (J)infants and nursing babies faint
In the open squares of the city.
Lamedh
12 They say to their mothers,
“(K)Where is grain and wine?”
As they faint like a wounded man
In the open squares of the city,
As their (L)life is poured out
On their mothers’ bosom.

13 What shall I testify about you?
To what (M)shall I equate you,
O daughter of Jerusalem?
To what shall I liken you as I comfort you,
O (N)virgin daughter of Zion?
For your [d]destruction is as vast as the sea;
Who can (O)heal you?
Nun
14 Your (P)prophets have beheld for you
Worthless and ineffective visions;
And they have not (Q)uncovered your iniquity
So as to [e]return you from captivity,
But they have (R)beheld for you worthless and misleading [f]oracles.
Samekh
15 All who pass along the way
(S)Clap their hands in derision at you;
They (T)hiss and shake their heads
At the daughter of Jerusalem,
“Is this the city of which they said,
‘(U)The perfection of beauty,
(V)The joy of the whole earth’?”
Pe
16 All (W)your enemies
Have opened their mouths wide against you;
They hiss and (X)gnash their teeth.
They say, “We have (Y)swallowed her up!
Surely this is the (Z)day for which we have hoped;
We have found it, we have seen it.”
Ayin
17 Yahweh has (AA)done what He purposed;
He has completed His word
Which He commanded from days of old.
He has pulled down (AB)without sparing,
And He has caused the enemy to (AC)be glad over you;
He has (AD)exalted the [g]might of your adversaries.

14 Therefore, my (A)beloved, flee from (B)idolatry. 15 I speak as to prudent people. You judge what I say. 16 Is not the (C)cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the [a](D)bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ? 17 Since there is one [b]bread, we (E)who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one [c]bread.
27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be (A)guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But a man must (B)test himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. 30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number [a](C)sleep. 31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are (D)disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with (E)the world.
The Passover Meal
12 (A)And on the first day of (B)Unleavened Bread, when [a]the Passover lamb was being (C)sacrificed, His disciples *said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?” 13 And He *sent two of His disciples and *said to them, “Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him; 14 and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is My (D)guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 15 And he himself will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; prepare for us there.” 16 And the disciples went out and came to the city, and found it just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.
17 (E)And when it was evening He *came with the twelve. 18 And as they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will [b]betray Me—the one who is eating with Me.” 19 They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?” 20 And He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, the one who dips with Me in the bowl. 21 For the Son of Man is to go just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man [c]by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good [d]for that man if he had not been born.”
The Lord’s Supper
22 (F)And while they were eating, He took some bread, and [e]after a (G)blessing, He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is My body.” 23 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My (H)blood of the (I)covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
