Even my (A)close friend in whom I trusted,
Who ate my bread,
Has lifted up his heel against me.

21 And as they were eating, He said, (A)Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” 22 And being deeply grieved, they [a]each one began to say to Him, “Surely not I, Lord?” 23 And He answered and said, (B)He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. 24 The Son of Man is going, (C)just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (D)It would have been good [b]for that man if he had not been born.” 25 And (E)Judas, who was betraying Him, answered and said, “Surely not I, (F)Rabbi?” Jesus *said to him, (G)You yourself said it.”

The Lord’s Supper

26 (H)Now while they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and [c](I)after a blessing, He broke it. And giving it to the disciples, He said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for (J)this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for (K)many for forgiveness of sins. 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

30 (L)And after singing a hymn, they went out to (M)the Mount of Olives.

31 Then Jesus *said to them, “You will all [d](N)fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, ‘(O)I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be (P)scattered.’ 32 But after I have been raised, (Q)I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 33 But Peter answered and said to Him, “Even though all may [e]fall away because of You, I will never fall away.” 34 Jesus said to him, (R)Truly I say to you that (S)this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” 35 Peter *said to Him, “(T)Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.” All the disciples said the same thing too.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

36 (U)Then Jesus *came with them to a place called (V)Gethsemane, and *said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 And He took with Him (W)Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed. 38 Then He *said to them, (X)My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and (Y)keep watch with Me.”

39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let (Z)this cup pass from Me; (AA)yet not as I will, but as You will.” 40 And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “So, you men could not (AB)keep watch with Me for one hour? 41 (AC)Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; (AD)the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this (AE)cannot pass away unless I drink it, (AF)Your will be done.” 43 And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. 45 Then He *came to the disciples and *said to them, [f]Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, (AG)the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Get up, let us go; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!”

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 (AH)And while He was still speaking, behold, (AI)Judas, one of the twelve, came up, and with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.” 49 And immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, “Greetings, (AJ)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 50 And Jesus said to him, (AK)Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.

51 And behold, (AL)one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew out his (AM)sword and struck the (AN)slave of the high priest and [g]cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus *said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for (AO)all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve [h](AP)legions of (AQ)angels? 54 Therefore, how will (AR)the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?”

55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? (AS)Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. 56 But all this has taken place in order that (AT)the Scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.

Jesus Before Caiaphas

57 (AU)Now those who had seized Jesus led Him away to (AV)Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. 58 But (AW)Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the (AX)courtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the [i](AY)officers to see the outcome.

59 Now the chief priests and the whole (AZ)Sanhedrin kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. 60 And they did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on (BA)two came forward, 61 and said, “This man stated, ‘(BB)I am able to destroy the [j]sanctuary of God and to rebuild it [k]in three days.’” 62 And the high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You not answer? What are these men testifying against You?” 63 But (BC)Jesus kept silent. (BD)And the high priest said to Him, “(BE)I put You under oath by (BF)the living God, that You tell us whether You are the [l]Christ, (BG)the Son of God.” 64 Jesus *said to him, (BH)You yourself said it; nevertheless I tell you, [m]hereafter you will see (BI)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and (BJ)coming on the clouds of heaven.”

65 Then the high priest (BK)tore his garments and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what do you think?” They answered and said, “(BL)He deserves death!”

67 (BM)Then they (BN)spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others [n]slapped Him, 68 and said, “(BO)Prophesy to us, O [o]Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

Peter’s Denials

69 (BP)Now Peter was sitting outside in the (BQ)courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.” 71 And when he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and *said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.” 73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Surely you too are one of them; (BR)for even the way you talk [p]gives you away.” 74 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, (BS)Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and cried bitterly.

18 And as they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will [a]betray Me—the one who is eating with Me.” 19 They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?” 20 And He said to them, It is one of the twelve, the one who dips with Me in the bowl. 21 For the Son of Man is to go just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man [b]by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good [c]for that man if he had not been born.”

The Lord’s Supper

22 (A)And while they were eating, He took some bread, and [d]after a (B)blessing, He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is My body.” 23 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My (C)blood of the (D)covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

26 (E)And after singing a hymn, they went out to (F)the Mount of Olives.

27 (G)And Jesus *said to them, “You will all [e]fall away, because it is written, ‘(H)I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.’ 28 But after I have been raised, (I)I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 29 But Peter said to Him, “Even though all may [f]fall away, yet I will not.” 30 And Jesus *said to him, “Truly I say to you, that (J)today, this very night, before (K)a rooster crows twice, you yourself will deny Me three times.” 31 But Peter kept saying insistently, “If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And they all were saying the same thing also.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

32 (L)Then they *came to a place named Gethsemane; and He *said to His disciples, “Sit here until I have prayed.” 33 And He *took with Him Peter and James and John, and began to be very (M)distressed and troubled. 34 And He *said to them, (N)My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death; remain here and keep watch.” 35 And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were possible, (O)the hour might pass from Him. 36 And He was saying, (P)Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; (Q)yet not what I will, but what You will.” 37 And He *came and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not keep watch for one hour? 38 (R)Keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 And again He went away and prayed, saying the same [g]words. 40 And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him. 41 And He *came the third time, and *said to them, [h]Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough; (S)the hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being [i]betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Get up, let us go; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!”

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

43 (T)And immediately while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, *came up, and with him was a crowd with swords and clubs, who were from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him and lead Him away [j]under guard.” 45 And after coming, Judas, having immediately gone to Him, *said, “(U)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 46 And they laid hands on Him and seized Him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and [k]cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a robber? 49 Every day I was with you (V)in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me; but this has taken place in order that the Scriptures would be fulfilled.” 50 And they all left Him and fled.

51 And a young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body; and they *seized him. 52 But he [l]pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked.

Jesus Before His Accusers

53 (W)Then they led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes *gathered together. 54 And Peter followed Him at a distance, (X)right into (Y)the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the [m]officers and (Z)warming himself at the [n]fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the whole [o](AA)Sanhedrin were seeking to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any. 56 For many were giving false testimony against Him, but their testimony was not consistent. 57 And some, standing up, were giving false testimony against Him, saying, 58 “We ourselves heard Him say, ‘(AB)I will destroy this [p]sanctuary made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.’” 59 And not even in this way was their testimony consistent. 60 And the high priest stood up in their midst and questioned Jesus, saying, “You answer nothing? What are these men testifying against You?” 61 (AC)But He kept silent and did not answer. (AD)Again the high priest was questioning Him and *said to Him, “Are You the [q]Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am; and you shall see (AE)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and (AF)coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 (AG)And tearing his tunics, the high priest *said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64 You have heard the (AH)blasphemy; how does it seem to you?” And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death. 65 And some began to (AI)spit at Him, and [r](AJ)to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, “(AK)Prophesy!” And the officers [s]received Him with [t]slaps in the face.

Peter’s Denials

66 (AL)And as Peter was below in (AM)the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the high priest *came, 67 and seeing Peter (AN)warming himself, she looked at him and *said, “You also were with the (AO)Nazarene, Jesus.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.” And he (AP)went out into the entryway.[u] 69 And when the servant-girl saw him, she began once more to say to the bystanders, “This is one of them!” 70 But again (AQ)he was denying it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, (AR)for you are also a Galilean.” 71 But he began to [v]curse and swear, “I do not know this man you are talking about!” 72 And immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said the statement to him, “Before (AS)a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” [w]And throwing himself down, he began to cry.

21 (A)But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Me on the table. 22 For indeed, the Son of Man is going (B)as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!” 23 And they began to argue among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this thing.

Who Is Greatest?

24 And there arose also (C)a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest. 25 (D)And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’ 26 But not so with you; (E)rather the one who is the greatest among you must become like (F)the youngest, and the leader like the servant. 27 For (G)who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines? But (H)I am among you as the one who serves.

28 “Now you are those who have stood by Me in My (I)trials, 29 and I grant you a (J)kingdom, just as My Father granted one to Me, 30 that you may (K)eat and drink at My table in My (L)kingdom, and (M)you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

31 “Simon, Simon, behold, (N)Satan has [a]demanded to (O)sift all of you like wheat. 32 But I (P)have prayed earnestly for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, once you have returned, (Q)strengthen your brothers.” 33 (R)But he said to Him, “Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death!” 34 And He said, “I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.”

35 And He said to them, (S)When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Not a thing.” 36 And He said to them, “But now, [b]whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and [c]whoever has no sword should sell his garment and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this which is written must be [d]completed in Me, ‘(T)And He was numbered with transgressors’; for (U)that which refers to Me has its [e]completion.” 38 And they said, “Lord, look, here are two (V)swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

39 (W)And He came out and went (X)as was His custom to (Y)the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him. 40 (Z)Now when He arrived at the place, He said to them, (AA)Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” 41 And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He (AB)knelt down and began to pray, 42 saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this (AC)cup from Me, (AD)yet not My will, but Yours be done.” 43 [f]Now an (AE)angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 And (AF)being in agony He was praying very fervently, and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. 45 And when He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, 46 and said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise up and (AG)pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 (AH)While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was coming ahead of them, and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 And when those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the (AI)sword?” 50 And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus answered and said, [g]Stop! No more of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and (AJ)officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs (AK)as against a robber? 53 While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not stretch out your hands against Me, but [h]this hour and the authority of darkness are yours.”

54 (AL)Now having arrested Him, they led Him away and brought Him to the house of the high priest, but (AM)Peter was following at a distance. 55 (AN)And after they had kindled a fire in the middle of (AO)the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter was sitting among them. 56 And a servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight and looking intently at him, said, “This man was with Him too.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.” 58 A little later, (AP)another saw him and said, “You are one of them too!” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” 59 And after about an hour had passed, another man began to insist, saying, “Certainly this man was with Him too, (AQ)for he also is a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 (AR)And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, (AS)Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” 62 And he went out and cried bitterly.

63 (AT)Now the men who were holding [i]Jesus in custody were mocking Him while they beat Him, 64 and they blindfolded Him and were asking Him, saying, “(AU)Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?” 65 And they were saying many other things against Him, (AV)blaspheming.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin

66 (AW)And as the day came, (AX)the Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their (AY)Sanhedrin, saying, 67 (AZ)If You are the [j]Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, 68 and if I ask a question, you will not answer. 69 (BA)But from now on (BB)the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of [k]God.” 70 And they all said, “Are You (BC)the Son of God, then?” And He said to them, (BD)You yourselves say that I am.” 71 Then they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

21 When Jesus had said these things, He (A)became troubled in spirit, and bore witness and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, that (B)one of you will [a]betray Me.” 22 The disciples began looking at one another, (C)perplexed about whom He *spoke.
