Jesus Before His Accusers

^53 (A)Then they led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes *gathered together. ⁵⁴ And Peter followed Him at a distance, ^(B)right into ^(C)the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the ^[a]officers and ^(D)warming himself at the ^[b]fire. ⁵⁵ Now the chief priests and the whole ^[c](E)Sanhedrin were seeking to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any. ⁵⁶ For many were giving false testimony against Him, but their testimony was not consistent. ⁵⁷ And some, standing up, were giving false testimony against Him, saying, ⁵⁸ “We ourselves heard Him say, ‘^(F)I will destroy this ^[d]sanctuary made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.’” ⁵⁹ And not even in this way was their testimony consistent. ⁶⁰ And the high priest stood up in their midst and questioned Jesus, saying, “You answer nothing? What are these men testifying against You?” ^61 (G)But He kept silent and did not answer. ^(H)Again the high priest was questioning Him and *said to Him, “Are You the ^[e]Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” ⁶² And Jesus said, “I am; and you shall see ^(I)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and ^(J)coming with the clouds of heaven.” ^63 (K)And tearing his tunics, the high priest *said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? ⁶⁴ You have heard the ^(L)blasphemy; how does it seem to you?” And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death. ⁶⁵ And some began to ^(M)spit at Him, and ^[f](N)to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, “^(O)Prophesy!” And the officers ^[g]received Him with ^[h]slaps in the face.

Jesus Before Caiaphas

^57 (A)Now those who had seized Jesus led Him away to ^(B)Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. ⁵⁸ But ^(C)Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the ^(D)courtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the ^[a](E)officers to see the outcome.

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests and the whole ^(F)Sanhedrin kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. ⁶⁰ And they did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on ^(G)two came forward, ⁶¹ and said, “This man stated, ‘^(H)I am able to destroy the ^[b]sanctuary of God and to rebuild it ^[c]in three days.’” ⁶² And the high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You not answer? What are these men testifying against You?” ⁶³ But ^(I)Jesus kept silent. ^(J)And the high priest said to Him, “^(K)I put You under oath by ^(L)the living God, that You tell us whether You are the ^[d]Christ, ^(M)the Son of God.” ⁶⁴ Jesus *said to him, “^(N)You yourself said it; nevertheless I tell you, ^[e]hereafter you will see ^(O)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and ^(P)coming on the clouds of heaven.”

⁶⁵ Then the high priest ^(Q)tore his garments and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; ⁶⁶ what do you think?” They answered and said, “^(R)He deserves death!”

^67 (S)Then they ^(T)spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others ^[f]slapped Him, ⁶⁸ and said, “^(U)Prophesy to us, O ^[g]Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

Jesus Before the Priests; Peter Denies Jesus

^12 (A)So ^(B)the Roman ^[a]cohort and the ^[b]commander and the ^(C)officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him, ¹³ and led Him to ^(D)Annas first; for he was father-in-law of ^(E)Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. ¹⁴ Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that ^(F)it was better for one man to die on behalf of the people.

^15 (G)And Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so was another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered with Jesus into ^(H)the court of the high priest, ^16 (I)but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in. ^17 (J)Then the servant-girl who kept the door *said to Peter, “^(K)Are you not also one of this man’s disciples?” He *said, “I am not.” ¹⁸ Now the slaves and the ^(L)officers were standing there, having made ^(M)a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were ^(N)warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.

^19 (O)The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching. ²⁰ Jesus answered him, “I ^(P)have spoken openly to the world; I always ^(Q)taught in ^[c]synagogues and ^(R)in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret. ²¹ Why do you question Me? Question those who have heard what I spoke to them; behold, they know what I said.” ²² And when He had said this, one of the ^(S)officers standing nearby ^(T)gave Jesus a slap, saying, “Is that the way You answer the high priest?” ^23 (U)Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, bear witness of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?” ^24 (V)So Annas sent Him bound to ^(W)Caiaphas the high priest.

^25 (X)Now ^(Y)Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “^(Z)You are not also one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.” ²⁶ One of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the one ^(AA)whose ear Peter cut off, *said, “Did I not see you in ^(AB)the garden with Him?” ²⁷ Peter then denied it again, and immediately ^(AC)a rooster crowed.

Jesus Before Pilate

^28 (AD)Then they *led Jesus from ^(AE)Caiaphas into ^(AF)the ^[d]Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into ^(AG)the ^[e]Praetorium so that ^(AH)they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. ^29 (AI)Therefore Pilate went out to them and *said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” ³⁰ They answered and said to him, “If this man were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you.” ³¹ So Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,” ³² in order that ^(AJ)the word of Jesus which He spoke would be fulfilled, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die.

³³ Therefore Pilate ^(AK)entered again into the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, “^(AL)Are You the King of the Jews?” ³⁴ Jesus answered, “Are you saying this from yourself, or did others tell you about Me?” ³⁵ Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You to me; what did You do?” ³⁶ Jesus answered, “^(AM)My kingdom ^[f]is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be delivered over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not ^[g]from here.” ³⁷ Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “^(AN)You yourself said I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, ^(AO)to bear witness to the truth. ^(AP)Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” ³⁸ Pilate *said to Him, “What is truth?”

And when he had said this, he ^(AQ)went out again to the Jews and *said to them, “^(AR)I find no guilt in Him. ^39 (AS)But you have a custom that I release someone ^[h]for you at the Passover; do you wish then that I release ^[i]for you the King of the Jews?” ⁴⁰ So they cried out again, saying, “^(AT)Not this man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a robber.
