The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

43 (A)And immediately while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, *came up, and with him was a crowd with swords and clubs, who were from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him and lead Him away [a]under guard.” 45 And after coming, Judas, having immediately gone to Him, *said, “(B)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 46 And they laid hands on Him and seized Him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and [b]cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a robber? 49 Every day I was with you (C)in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me; but this has taken place in order that the Scriptures would be fulfilled.” 50 And they all left Him and fled.

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 (A)And while He was still speaking, behold, (B)Judas, one of the twelve, came up, and with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.” 49 And immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, “Greetings, (C)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 50 And Jesus said to him, (D)Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.

51 And behold, (E)one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew out his (F)sword and struck the (G)slave of the high priest and [a]cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus *said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for (H)all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve [b](I)legions of (J)angels? 54 Therefore, how will (K)the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?”

55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? (L)Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. 56 But all this has taken place in order that (M)the Scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 (A)While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was coming ahead of them, and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 And when those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the (B)sword?” 50 And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus answered and said, [a]Stop! No more of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and (C)officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs (D)as against a robber? 53 While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not stretch out your hands against Me, but [b]this hour and the authority of darkness are yours.”

(A)Judas then, having received (B)the Roman [a]cohort and (C)officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, *came there with lanterns and (D)torches and weapons. So Jesus, (E)knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and *said to them, (F)Whom do you seek?” They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He *said to them, “I am He.” And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. So when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground. Therefore He again asked them, (G)Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way,” in order that the word which He spoke would be fulfilled, (H)Of those whom You have given Me, I lost not one.” 10 Simon Peter then, (I)having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus. 11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath; (J)the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?”
