The Temptation of Jesus

(A)And Jesus, (B)full of the Holy Spirit, (C)returned from the Jordan and was led (D)by the Spirit in the wilderness for (E)forty days, (F)being tempted by the devil. (G)And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, (H)he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are (I)the Son of God, command (J)this stone to become bread.” And Jesus answered him, (K)“It is written, (L)‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” (M)And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, “To you (N)I will give all this authority and their glory, (O)for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” And Jesus answered him, (P)“It is written,

(Q)“‘You shall worship the Lord your God,
and (R)him only shall you serve.’”

(S)And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are (T)the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,

(U)“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
    to guard you,’

11 and

(V)“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

12 And Jesus answered him, “It is said, (W)‘You shall not (X)put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him (Y)until an opportune time.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

14 (Z)And Jesus returned (AA)in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and (AB)a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. 15 And (AC)he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

16 (AD)And he came to (AE)Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And (AF)as was his custom, (AG)he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up (AH)to read. 17 And (AI)the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

18 (AJ)“The Spirit of the Lord (AK)is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
to (AL)proclaim good news to the poor.
(AM)He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and (AN)recovering of sight to the blind,
(AO)to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 (AP)to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”

20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and (AQ)sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were (AR)fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today (AS)this Scripture (AT)has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at (AU)the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, (AV)“Is not this (AW)Joseph's son?” 23 And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, (AX)‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did (AY)at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’” 24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you, (AZ)no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when (BA)the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them (BB)but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And (BC)there were many lepers[a] in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, (BD)but only Naaman the Syrian.” 28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and (BE)drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30 But (BF)passing through their midst, he went away.

Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Demon

31 (BG)And he (BH)went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And (BI)he was teaching them (BJ)on the Sabbath, 32 and (BK)they were astonished at his teaching, (BL)for his word possessed authority. 33 And (BM)in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Ha![b] (BN)What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? (BO)I know who you are—(BP)the Holy One of God.” 35 But Jesus (BQ)rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 36 And (BR)they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? (BS)For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37 And (BT)reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

Jesus Heals Many

38 (BU)And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon's house. Now (BV)Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39 And he stood over her and (BW)rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.

40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and (BX)he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 (BY)And demons also came out of many, (BZ)crying, “You are (CA)the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and (CB)would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was (CC)the Christ.

Jesus Preaches in Synagogues

42 (CD)And when it was day, he departed and went (CE)into a desolate place. And (CF)the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, 43 but he said to them, (CG)“I must (CH)preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” 44 And he was preaching (CI)in the synagogues of Judea.[c]

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by (CJ)the lake of Gennesaret, (CK)and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were (CL)washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And (CM)he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, (CN)“Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, (CO)we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” And when they had done this, (CP)they enclosed a large number of fish, and (CQ)their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. (CR)And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, (CS)“Depart from me, for (CT)I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”[d] 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, (CU)they left everything and followed him.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

12 While he was in one of the cities, (CV)there came a man full of leprosy.[e] And when he saw Jesus, he (CW)fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, (CX)if you will, you can make me clean.” 13 And Jesus[f] stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And he charged him (CY)to tell no one, but “go and show (CZ)yourself to the priest, and (DA)make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, (DB)for a proof to them.” 15 (DC)But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities. 16 But (DD)he would withdraw to desolate places and (DE)pray.

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

17 On one of those days, as he was teaching, Pharisees and (DF)teachers of the law were sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And (DG)the power of the Lord was with him to heal.[g] 18 (DH)And behold, some men were bringing (DI)on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and lay him before Jesus, 19 but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on (DJ)the roof and let him down with his bed (DK)through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. 20 And (DL)when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, (DM)your sins are forgiven you.” 21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this who speaks (DN)blasphemies? (DO)Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 22 When Jesus (DP)perceived their thoughts, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 24 But that you may know that (DQ)the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the man who was paralyzed—“I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.” 25 And immediately he rose up before them and picked up what he had been lying on and went home, (DR)glorifying God. 26 And amazement seized them all, and they (DS)glorified God and were filled (DT)with awe, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.”

Jesus Calls Levi

27 (DU)After this he went out and saw (DV)a tax collector named (DW)Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” 28 And (DX)leaving everything, he rose and followed him.

29 And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company (DY)of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. 30 And the Pharisees and (DZ)their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, (EA)“Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 31 And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 (EB)I have not come to call the righteous (EC)but sinners (ED)to repentance.”

A Question About Fasting

33 And they said to him, (EE)“The disciples of John (EF)fast often and (EG)offer prayers, (EH)and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” 34 And Jesus said to them, (EI)“Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 (EJ)The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and (EK)then they will fast in those days.” 36 He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old (EL)wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’”[h]

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

(EM)On a Sabbath,[i] while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples (EN)plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. But some of the Pharisees said, (EO)“Why are you doing (EP)what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” And Jesus answered them, (EQ)“Have you not read (ER)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and took and ate (ES)the bread of the Presence, (ET)which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?” And he said to them, (EU)“The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”

A Man with a Withered Hand

On another Sabbath, (EV)he entered the synagogue (EW)and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and the Pharisees (EX)watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, (EY)so that they might find a reason to accuse him. But (EZ)he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there. And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, (FA)is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” 10 And (FB)after looking around at them all he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And (FC)he did so, and his hand was restored. 11 But they were filled with (FD)fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The Twelve Apostles

12 In these days (FE)he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, (FF)he called his disciples (FG)and (FH)chose from them twelve, whom he named (FI)apostles: 14 Simon, (FJ)whom he named Peter, and (FK)Andrew his brother, and (FL)James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, 15 and (FM)Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called (FN)the Zealot, 16 and (FO)Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Jesus Ministers to a Great Multitude

17 And (FP)he came down with them and stood on a level place, with (FQ)a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of (FR)Tyre and Sidon, 18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. (FS)And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all the crowd (FT)sought to touch him, for (FU)power came out from him and healed them all.

The Beatitudes

20 And (FV)he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, (FW)and said:

“Blessed are you who are poor, for (FX)yours is the kingdom of God.

21 (FY)“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.

(FZ)“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.

22 “Blessed are you when (GA)people hate you and when they (GB)exclude you and revile you and (GC)spurn your name as evil, (GD)on account of the Son of Man! 23 (GE)Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for (GF)so their fathers did to the prophets.

Jesus Pronounces Woes

24 (GG)“But woe to you who are rich, (GH)for you (GI)have received your consolation.

25 “Woe to you who are full now, for (GJ)you shall be hungry.

“Woe to (GK)you who laugh now, (GL)for you shall mourn and weep.

26 “Woe to you, (GM)when all people speak well of you, for (GN)so their fathers did to (GO)the false prophets.

Love Your Enemies

27 “But I say to you who hear, (GP)Love your enemies, (GQ)do good to those who hate you, 28 (GR)bless those who curse you, (GS)pray for those who abuse you. 29 (GT)To one who (GU)strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic[j] either. 30 (GV)Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. 31 And (GW)as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

32 (GX)“If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And (GY)if you (GZ)lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. 35 But (HA)love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and (HB)you will be sons of (HC)the Most High, for (HD)he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 (HE)Be merciful, even as (HF)your Father is merciful.

Judging Others

37 (HG)(HH)“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; (HI)forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 (HJ)give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put (HK)into your lap. For (HL)with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

39 He also told them a parable: (HM)“Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 (HN)A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is (HO)fully trained will be like his teacher. 41 (HP)Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but (HQ)do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye.

A Tree and Its Fruit

43 “For (HR)no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44 for (HS)each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 (HT)The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces (HU)evil, (HV)for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Build Your House on the Rock

46 (HW)“Why (HX)do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 (HY)Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.[k] 49 (HZ)But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and (IA)the ruin of that house was great.”

Jesus Heals a Centurion's Servant

After he had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, (IB)he entered Capernaum. Now a centurion had a servant[l] who was sick and at the point of death, who was highly valued by him. When the centurion[m] heard about Jesus, (IC)he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, (ID)“He is worthy to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us (IE)our synagogue.” And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, “Lord, (IF)do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But (IG)say the word, and let my servant be healed. For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard these things, (IH)he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such (II)faith.” 10 And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.

Jesus Raises a Widow's Son

11 Soon afterward[n] he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. 12 As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, (IJ)the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her. 13 And when the Lord saw her, (IK)he had compassion on her and (IL)said to her, “Do not weep.” 14 Then he came up and touched (IM)the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, (IN)arise.” 15 And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus[o] (IO)gave him to his mother. 16 Fear seized them all, and (IP)they glorified God, saying, (IQ)“A great prophet has arisen among us!” and (IR)“God has visited his people!” 17 And this report about him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.

Messengers from John the Baptist

18 (IS)(IT)The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John, 19 calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one (IU)who is to come, or (IV)shall we look for another?” 20 And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one (IW)who is to come, or (IX)shall we look for another?’” 21 In that hour (IY)he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and (IZ)on many who were blind he bestowed sight. 22 And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: (JA)the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, (JB)lepers[p] are cleansed, and (JC)the deaf hear, (JD)the dead are raised up, (JE)the poor have good news preached to them. 23 And blessed is the one who is (JF)not offended by me.”

24 When John's messengers had gone, Jesus[q] began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out (JG)into the wilderness to see? (JH)A reed shaken by the wind? 25 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid clothing and live in luxury are in kings' courts. 26 What then did you go out to see? (JI)A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is he of whom it is written,

(JJ)“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
who will prepare your way before you.’

28 I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29 ((JK)When all the people heard this, and (JL)the tax collectors too, they declared God just,[r] (JM)having been baptized with (JN)the baptism of John, 30 (JO)but the Pharisees and (JP)the lawyers (JQ)rejected (JR)the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)

31 “To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another,

“‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’

33 For John the Baptist has come (JS)eating no bread and (JT)drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man has come (JU)eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, (JV)a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35 Yet (JW)wisdom is justified by all her children.”

A Sinful Woman Forgiven

36 (JX)One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house and reclined at table. 37 (JY)And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, 38 and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and (JZ)wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If (KA)this man were (KB)a prophet, he (KC)would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.” 40 And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.”

41 “A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred (KD)denarii, and the other fifty. 42 (KE)When they could not pay, he (KF)cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.” 44 Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; (KG)you gave me no water for my feet, but (KH)she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 (KI)You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to (KJ)kiss my feet. 46 (KK)You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Therefore I tell you, her sins, (KL)which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48 And he said to her, (KM)“Your sins are forgiven.” 49 Then those who were at table with him began to say among[s] themselves, (KN)“Who is this, who even forgives sins?” 50 And he said to the woman, (KO)“Your faith has saved you; (KP)go in peace.”

Women Accompanying Jesus

Soon afterward he went on (KQ)through cities and villages, proclaiming and (KR)bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, and also (KS)some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: (KT)Mary, called Magdalene, (KU)from whom seven demons had gone out, and (KV)Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them[t] out of their means.

The Parable of the Sower

(KW)And when a great crowd was gathering and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable, (KX)“A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, (KY)it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among (KZ)thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded (LA)a hundredfold.” As he said these things, he called out, (LB)“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

The Purpose of the Parables

And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, 10 he said, (LC)“To you it has been given to know (LD)the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so (LE)that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’ 11 (LF)Now the parable is this: The seed is (LG)the word of God. 12 The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not (LH)believe and be saved. 13 And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it (LI)with joy. But these have no root; they (LJ)believe for a while, and in time of testing (LK)fall away. 14 And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but (LL)as they go on their way they are choked by the (LM)cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. 15 As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and (LN)bear fruit (LO)with patience.

A Lamp Under a Jar

16 (LP)(LQ)“No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 17 (LR)For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light. 18 (LS)Take care then how you hear, (LT)for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.”

Jesus' Mother and Brothers

19 (LU)Then his mother and (LV)his brothers[u] came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. 20 And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” 21 But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those (LW)who hear the word of God and do it.”

Jesus Calms a Storm

22 (LX)One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of (LY)the lake.” So they set out, 23 and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on (LZ)the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. 24 And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and (MA)rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, (MB)and there was a calm. 25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they (MC)were afraid, and they (MD)marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that (ME)he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”

Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon

26 (MF)Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes,[v] which is opposite Galilee. 27 When Jesus[w] had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house (MG)but among the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he (MH)cried out and fell down before him and said (MI)with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, (MJ)Son of (MK)the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.” 29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon (ML)into the desert.) 30 Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, (MM)“Legion,” for many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged him not to command them to depart into (MN)the abyss. 32 Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. 33 Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into (MO)the lake and drowned.

34 When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting (MP)at the feet of Jesus, (MQ)clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 36 And those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed[x] man had been healed. 37 Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes (MR)asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. 38 The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your home, and (MS)declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.

Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus's Daughter

40 Now when Jesus returned, the crowd (MT)welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. 41 (MU)And there came a man named Jairus, who was (MV)a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus' feet, he implored him to come to his house, 42 for he had (MW)an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.

As Jesus went, the people (MX)pressed around him. 43 And there was a woman (MY)who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her (MZ)living on physicians,[y] she could not be healed by anyone. 44 She came up behind him and touched (NA)the fringe of his garment, and (NB)immediately her discharge of blood ceased. 45 And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter[z] said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that (NC)power has gone out from me.” 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 And he said to her, “Daughter, (ND)your faith has made you well; (NE)go in peace.”

49 While he was still speaking, someone from (NF)the ruler's house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; (NG)do not trouble (NH)the Teacher any more.” 50 But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.” 51 And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except (NI)Peter and (NJ)John and James, and the father and mother of the child. 52 And all were weeping and (NK)mourning for her, but he (NL)said, “Do not weep, for (NM)she is not dead but (NN)sleeping.” 53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But (NO)taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, (NP)arise.” 55 And (NQ)her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat. 56 And her parents were amazed, but (NR)he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

(NS)And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, (NT)and he sent them out to (NU)proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. (NV)And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, (NW)no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics.[aa] And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town (NX)shake off the dust from your feet (NY)as a testimony (NZ)against them.” (OA)And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

Herod Is Perplexed by Jesus

(OB)Now (OC)Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that (OD)John had been raised from the dead, (OE)by some that Elijah had appeared, and (OF)by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And (OG)he sought to see him.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

10 On their return (OH)the apostles told him all that they had done. (OI)And he took them and withdrew apart to a town called Bethsaida. 11 When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he (OJ)welcomed them and (OK)spoke to them of the kingdom of God and (OL)cured those who had need of healing. 12 Now (OM)the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, (ON)“Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.”

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(A)

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,(B) left the Jordan(C) and was led by the Spirit(D) into the wilderness, where for forty days(E) he was tempted[a] by the devil.(F) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God,(G) tell this stone to become bread.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’[b](H)

The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.(I) And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me,(J) and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all be yours.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’[c](K)

The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[d](L)

12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[e](M)

13 When the devil had finished all this tempting,(N) he left him(O) until an opportune time.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

14 Jesus returned to Galilee(P) in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.(Q) 15 He was teaching in their synagogues,(R) and everyone praised him.

16 He went to Nazareth,(S) where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,(T) as was his custom. He stood up to read,(U) 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,(V)
    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news(W) to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19     to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[f](X)

20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down.(Y) The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled(Z) in your hearing.”

22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.(AA)

23 Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown(AB) what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’”(AC)

24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.(AD) 25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.(AE) 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.(AF) 27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy[g] in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”(AG)

28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town,(AH) and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.(AI)

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit(AJ)

31 Then he went down to Capernaum,(AK) a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching,(AL) because his words had authority.(AM)

33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us,(AN) Jesus of Nazareth?(AO) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are(AP)—the Holy One of God!”(AQ)

35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly.(AR) “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.

36 All the people were amazed(AS) and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority(AT) and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.(AU)

Jesus Heals Many(AV)(AW)

38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked(AX) the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.

40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one,(AY) he healed them.(AZ) 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!”(BA) But he rebuked(BB) them and would not allow them to speak,(BC) because they knew he was the Messiah.

42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God(BD) to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.(BE)

Jesus Calls His First Disciples(BF)

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,[h] the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.(BG) He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.(BH)

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”(BI)

Simon answered, “Master,(BJ) we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.(BK) But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.(BL) So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”(BM) For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid;(BN) from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.(BO)

Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(BP)

12 While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy.[i](BQ) When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

13 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.

14 Then Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone,(BR) but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded(BS) for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”

15 Yet the news about him spread all the more,(BT) so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.(BU)

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(BV)

17 One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law(BW) were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.(BX) 18 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19 When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.

20 When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”(BY)

21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(BZ)

22 Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(CA) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 25 Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. 26 Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God.(CB) They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”

Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners(CC)

27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,”(CD) Jesus said to him, 28 and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.(CE)

29 Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors(CF) and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect(CG) complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”(CH)

31 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”(CI)

Jesus Questioned About Fasting(CJ)

33 They said to him, “John’s disciples(CK) often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”

34 Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom(CL) fast while he is with them? 35 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them;(CM) in those days they will fast.”

36 He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(CN)

One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels.(CO) Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”(CP)

Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?(CQ) He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat.(CR) And he also gave some to his companions.” Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man(CS) is Lord of the Sabbath.”

On another Sabbath(CT) he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely(CU) to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.(CV) But Jesus knew what they were thinking(CW) and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there.

Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”

10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored. 11 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious(CX) and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The Twelve Apostles(CY)

12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.(CZ) 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles:(DA) 14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew,(DB) Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Blessings and Woes(DC)

17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon,(DD) 18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, 19 and the people all tried to touch him,(DE) because power was coming from him and healing them all.(DF)

20 Looking at his disciples, he said:

“Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.(DG)
21 Blessed are you who hunger now,
    for you will be satisfied.(DH)
Blessed are you who weep now,
    for you will laugh.(DI)
22 Blessed are you when people hate you,
when they exclude you(DJ) and insult you(DK)
and reject your name as evil,
because of the Son of Man.(DL)

23 “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy,(DM) because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.(DN)

24 “But woe to you who are rich,(DO)
for you have already received your comfort.(DP)
25 Woe to you who are well fed now,
    for you will go hungry.(DQ)
Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will mourn and weep.(DR)
26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.(DS)

Love for Enemies(DT)

27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,(DU) 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.(DV) 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.(DW) 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.(DX)

32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?(DY) Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you?(DZ) Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them,(EA) and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children(EB) of the Most High,(EC) because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful,(ED) just as your Father(EE) is merciful.

Judging Others(EF)

37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged.(EG) Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.(EH) 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.(EI) For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”(EJ)

39 He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit?(EK) 40 The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.(EL)

41 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

A Tree and Its Fruit(EM)

43 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit.(EN) People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.(EO)

The Wise and Foolish Builders(EP)

46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’(EQ) and do not do what I say?(ER) 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice,(ES) I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

The Faith of the Centurion(ET)

When Jesus had finished saying all this(EU) to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” So Jesus went with them.

He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.(EV) For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” 10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.

Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son(EW)

11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13 When the Lord(EX) saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”

14 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”(EY) 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

16 They were all filled with awe(EZ) and praised God.(FA) “A great prophet(FB) has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.”(FC) 17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.(FD)

Jesus and John the Baptist(FE)

18 John’s(FF) disciples(FG) told him about all these things. Calling two of them, 19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”

20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”

21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses(FH) and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[j] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(FI) 23 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”

24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet?(FJ) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’[k](FK)

28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God(FL) is greater than he.”

29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.(FM) 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law(FN) rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)

31 Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:

“‘We played the pipe for you,
    and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
    and you did not cry.’

33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine,(FO) and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(FP) 35 But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”

Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman(FQ)(FR)

36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet,(FS) he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”

40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”

“Tell me, teacher,” he said.

41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii,[l] and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”

43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”

“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.

44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet,(FT) but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss,(FU) but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head,(FV) but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”

48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”(FW)

49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you;(FX) go in peace.”(FY)

The Parable of the Sower(FZ)

After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.(GA) The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene)(GB) from whom seven demons had come out; Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s(GC) household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.

While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.”

When he said this, he called out, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”(GD)

His disciples asked him what this parable meant. 10 He said, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you,(GE) but to others I speak in parables, so that,

“‘though seeing, they may not see;
though hearing, they may not understand.’[m](GF)

11 “This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.(GG) 12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13 Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.(GH) 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches(GI) and pleasures, and they do not mature. 15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

A Lamp on a Stand

16 “No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.(GJ) 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.(GK) 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.”(GL)

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers(GM)

19 Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers(GN) are standing outside, wanting to see you.”

21 He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”(GO)

Jesus Calms the Storm(GP)(GQ)

22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.

24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master,(GR) we’re going to drown!”

He got up and rebuked(GS) the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.(GT) 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples.

In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man(GU)(GV)

26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,[n] which is across the lake from Galilee. 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me,(GW) Jesus, Son of the Most High God?(GX) I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29 For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.

30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.(GY)

32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake(GZ) and was drowned.

34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet,(HA) dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed(HB) man had been cured. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them,(HC) because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.

38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.

Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(HD)

40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader,(HE) came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.

As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding(HF) for twelve years,[o] but no one could heal her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak,(HG) and immediately her bleeding stopped.

45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked.

When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master,(HH) the people are crowding and pressing against you.”

46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me;(HI) I know that power has gone out from me.”(HJ)

47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you.(HK) Go in peace.”(HL)

49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader.(HM) “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”

50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”

51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James,(HN) and the child’s father and mother. 52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning(HO) for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.”(HP)

53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!”(HQ) 55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.(HR)

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(HS)(HT)

When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons(HU) and to cure diseases,(HV) and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God(HW) and to heal the sick. He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt.(HX) Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”(HY) So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.

Now Herod(HZ) the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John(IA) had been raised from the dead,(IB) others that Elijah had appeared,(IC) and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life.(ID) But Herod said, “I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?” And he tried to see him.(IE)

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(IF)(IG)

10 When the apostles(IH) returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida,(II) 11 but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God,(IJ) and healed those who needed healing.

12 Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.”

And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.

And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.

And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.

And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:

10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:

11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.

15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?

23 And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.

24 And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.

25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;

26 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.

27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.

28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,

29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.

30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way,

31 And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.

32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.

33 And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,

34 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.

35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.

36 And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.

37 And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.

38 And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.

39 And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.

40 Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.

41 And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.

43 And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.

44 And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.

And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,

And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.

And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.

Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.

And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.

And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.

And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:

10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.

11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

12 And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

13 And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.

14 And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

15 But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.

16 And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.

17 And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.

18 And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.

19 And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus.

20 And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.

21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?

22 But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts?

23 Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?

24 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.

25 And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.

26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.

27 And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.

28 And he left all, rose up, and followed him.

29 And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.

30 But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?

31 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

33 And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?

34 And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?

35 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.

36 And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.

37 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.

38 But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.

39 No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.

And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?

And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him;

How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?

And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered.

And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.

But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.

Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?

10 And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

11 And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.

12 And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

13 And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;

14 Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

15 Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,

16 And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.

17 And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;

18 And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed.

19 And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.

21 Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.

22 Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.

23 Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.

24 But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.

25 Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.

26 Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.

27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,

28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.

29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also.

30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.

31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.

33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.

34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.

35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:

38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

39 And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?

40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.

41 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

42 Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.

43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.

45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:

48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.

And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.

And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.

And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:

For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.

Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:

Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.

For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

10 And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.

11 And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.

12 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.

13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.

14 And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.

15 And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

16 And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.

17 And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.

18 And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.

19 And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.

22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.

23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.

26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.

27 This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.

30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

31 And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?

32 They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.

33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.

34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!

35 But wisdom is justified of all her children.

36 And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.

37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,

38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.

40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.

41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.

42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?

43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.

44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.

45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.

46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.

47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.

48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.

49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?

50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.

And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him,

And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,

And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.

And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable:

A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.

And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.

And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.

And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be?

10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.

11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.

13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.

14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.

15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

16 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.

17 For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.

18 Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.

19 Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press.

20 And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.

21 And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

22 Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.

23 But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.

24 And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.

25 And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.

26 And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.

27 And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs.

28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.

29 (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)

30 And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.

31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.

32 And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.

33 Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.

34 When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country.

35 Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

36 They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed.

37 Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again.

38 Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying,

39 Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.

40 And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.

41 And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house:

42 For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him.

43 And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any,

44 Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched.

45 And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?

46 And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me.

47 And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately.

48 And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.

49 While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.

50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.

51 And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden.

52 And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.

53 And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead.

54 And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.

55 And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat.

56 And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.

Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.

And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.

And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.

And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.

And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.

Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;

And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.

And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.

10 And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.

11 And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.

12 And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.

13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.

14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.

15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.

16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.

17 And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.

18 And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?

19 They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.

20 He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.

21 And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;

22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.

27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.

29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.

30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:

31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.

33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.

34 While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.

35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.

37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.

38 And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.

39 And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.

40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.

41 And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.

42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.

43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,

44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.

45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.

46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.

47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,

48 And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.

49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.

50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.

51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,

52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.

53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.

54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?

55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.

56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.

58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.

60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.

61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.

62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

10 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.

Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.

Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.

Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.

And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.

And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.

And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.

And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:

And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

10 But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,

11 Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

12 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.

13 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

14 But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.

15 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.

16 He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.

17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.

18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.

19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.

22 All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.

23 And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:

24 For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?

27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.

29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?

30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.

33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.

36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?

37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.

40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

11 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

Give us day by day our daily bread.

And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves;

For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him?

And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee.

I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.

And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?

12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?

13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

14 And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered.

15 But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils.

16 And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven.

17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.

18 If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.

19 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges.

20 But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.

21 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:

22 But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.

23 He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.

24 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out.

25 And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.

26 Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.

28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

29 And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.

30 For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.

31 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

32 The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

33 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.

34 The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.

35 Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.

36 If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.

37 And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat.

38 And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner.

39 And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.

40 Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?

41 But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.

42 But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

43 Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets.

44 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.

45 Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also.

46 And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.

47 Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.

48 Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.

49 Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute:

50 That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;

51 From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.

52 Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.

53 And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things:

54 Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.

12 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.

Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.

And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?

But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:

But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.

10 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.

11 And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:

12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.

13 And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.

14 And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?

15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

22 And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.

23 The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.

24 Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?

25 And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?

26 If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?

27 Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

28 If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?

29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.

30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.

32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.

34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

35 Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;

36 And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.

37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.

38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.

39 And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through.

40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

41 Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all?

42 And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?

43 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

44 Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.

45 But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;

46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

47 And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

49 I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?

50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!

51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:

52 For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.

53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

54 And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is.

55 And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass.

56 Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?

57 Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?

58 When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison.

59 I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.

13 There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.

And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things?

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.

Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?

And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:

And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

10 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.

11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.

12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.

13 And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.

14 And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.

15 The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?

16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?

17 And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.

18 Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it?

19 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.

20 And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God?

21 It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

22 And he went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem.

23 Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them,

24 Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.

25 When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are:

26 Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.

27 But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.

28 There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.

29 And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.

30 And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last.

31 The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee.

32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.

33 Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.

34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!

35 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

14 And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.

And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.

And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;

And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?

And they could not answer him again to these things.

And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them.

When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;

And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.

10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

Satan Tempts Jesus(A)

Then (B)Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and (C)was led by the Spirit [a]into the wilderness, being [b]tempted for forty days by the devil. And (D)in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.

And the devil said to Him, “If You are (E)the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”

But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, (F)‘Man shall not live by bread alone, [c]but by every word of God.’

[d]Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for (G)this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”

And Jesus answered and said to him, [e]“Get behind Me, Satan! [f]For it is written, (H)‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’

(I)Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:

(J)‘He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you,’

11 and,

(K)‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’

12 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, (L)‘You shall not [g]tempt the Lord your God.’

13 Now when the devil had ended every [h]temptation, he departed from Him (M)until an opportune time.

Jesus Begins His Galilean Ministry(N)

14 (O)Then Jesus returned (P)in the power of the Spirit to (Q)Galilee, and (R)news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. 15 And He (S)taught in their synagogues, (T)being glorified by all.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth(U)

16 So He came to (V)Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, (W)He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:

18 “The(X) Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me [i]to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To (Y)set at liberty those who are [j]oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is (Z)fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 So all bore witness to Him, and (AA)marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, (AB)“Is this not Joseph’s son?”

23 He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in (AC)Capernaum,[k] do also here in (AD)Your country.’ ” 24 Then He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, no (AE)prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 But I tell you truly, (AF)many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; 26 but to none of them was Elijah sent except to [l]Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 (AG)And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”

28 So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were (AH)filled with [m]wrath, 29 (AI)and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. 30 Then (AJ)passing through the midst of them, He went His way.

Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Spirit(AK)

31 Then (AL)He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths. 32 And they were (AM)astonished at His teaching, (AN)for His word was with authority. 33 (AO)Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, 34 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? (AP)I know who You are—(AQ)the Holy One of God!”

35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, [n]“Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him. 36 Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” 37 And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

Peter’s Mother-in-Law Healed(AR)

38 (AS)Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. But Simon’s wife’s mother was [o]sick with a high fever, and they (AT)made request of Him concerning her. 39 So He stood over her and (AU)rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them.

Many Healed After Sabbath Sunset(AV)

40 (AW)When the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 (AX)And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, (AY)“You are [p]the Christ, the Son of God!”

And He, (AZ)rebuking them, did not allow them to [q]speak, for they knew that He was the Christ.

Jesus Preaches in Galilee(BA)

42 (BB)Now when it was day, He departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them; 43 but He said to them, “I must (BC)preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.” 44 (BD)And He was preaching in the synagogues of [r]Galilee.

Four Fishermen Called as Disciples(BE)

So (BF)it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to (BG)hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He (BH)sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.

When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, (BI)“Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught (BJ)nothing; nevertheless (BK)at Your word I will let down the net.” And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, (BL)“Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”

For he and all who were with him were (BM)astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. (BN)From now on you will catch men.” 11 So when they had brought their boats to land, (BO)they [s]forsook all and followed Him.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper(BP)

12 (BQ)And it happened when He was in a certain city, that behold, a man who was full of (BR)leprosy saw Jesus; and he fell on his face and [t]implored Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”

13 Then He put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” (BS)Immediately the leprosy left him. 14 (BT)And He charged him to tell no one, “But go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as a testimony to them, (BU)just as Moses commanded.”

15 However, (BV)the report went around concerning Him all the more; and (BW)great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities. 16 (BX)So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and (BY)prayed.

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralytic(BZ)

17 Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present [u]to heal them. 18 (CA)Then behold, men brought on a bed a man who was paralyzed, whom they sought to bring in and lay before Him. 19 And when they could not find how they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst (CB)before Jesus.

20 When He saw their faith, He said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”

21 (CC)And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? (CD)Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

22 But when Jesus (CE)perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise up and walk’? 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the man who was paralyzed, (CF)“I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”

25 Immediately he rose up before them, took up what he had been lying on, and departed to his own house, (CG)glorifying God. 26 And they were all amazed, and they (CH)glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen strange things today!”

Matthew the Tax Collector(CI)

27 (CJ)After these things He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, (CK)“Follow Me.” 28 So he left all, rose up, and (CL)followed Him.

29 (CM)Then Levi gave Him a great feast in his own house. And (CN)there were a great number of tax collectors and others who sat down with them. 30 [v]And their scribes and the Pharisees [w]complained against His disciples, saying, (CO)“Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

31 Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 (CP)I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting(CQ)

33 Then they said to Him, (CR)“Why[x] do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?”

34 And He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the (CS)bridegroom is with them? 35 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; then they will fast in those days.”

36 (CT)Then He spoke a parable to them: “No one [y]puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into new wineskins, [z]and both are preserved. 39 And no one, having drunk old wine, [aa]immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is [ab]better.’ ”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(CU)

Now (CV)it happened [ac]on the second Sabbath after the first that He went through the grainfields. And His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate them, rubbing them in their hands. And some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why are you doing (CW)what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?”

But Jesus answering them said, “Have you not even read this, (CX)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he went into the house of God, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, (CY)which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?” And He said to them, “The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”

Healing on the Sabbath(CZ)

(DA)Now it happened on another Sabbath, also, that He entered the synagogue and taught. And a man was there whose right hand was withered. So the scribes and Pharisees watched Him closely, whether He would (DB)heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an (DC)accusation against Him. But He (DD)knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Arise and stand here.” And he arose and stood. Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one thing: (DE)Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or [ad]to destroy?” 10 And when He had looked around at them all, He said to [ae]the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored [af]as whole as the other. 11 But they were filled with rage, and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The Twelve Apostles(DF)

12 Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in (DG)prayer to God. 13 And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; (DH)and from them He chose (DI)twelve whom He also named apostles: 14 Simon, (DJ)whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; 15 Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot; 16 Judas (DK)the son of James, and (DL)Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor.

Jesus Heals a Great Multitude(DM)

17 And He came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples (DN)and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases, 18 as well as those who were tormented with unclean spirits. And they were healed. 19 And the whole multitude (DO)sought to (DP)touch Him, for (DQ)power went out from Him and healed them all.

The Beatitudes(DR)

20 Then He lifted up His eyes toward His disciples, and said:

(DS)“Blessed are you poor,
For yours is the kingdom of God.
21 (DT)Blessed are you who hunger now,
For you shall be (DU)filled.[ag]
(DV)Blessed are you who weep now,
For you shall (DW)laugh.
22 (DX)Blessed are you when men hate you,
And when they (DY)exclude you,
And revile you, and cast out your name as evil,
For the Son of Man’s sake.
23 (DZ)Rejoice in that day and leap for joy!
For indeed your reward is great in heaven,
For (EA)in like manner their fathers did to the prophets.

Jesus Pronounces Woes

24 “But(EB) woe to you (EC)who are rich,
For (ED)you have received your consolation.
25 (EE)Woe to you who are full,
For you shall hunger.
(EF)Woe to you who laugh now,
For you shall mourn and (EG)weep.
26 (EH)Woe [ah]to you when [ai]all men speak well of you,
For so did their fathers to the false prophets.

Love Your Enemies(EI)

27 (EJ)“But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 (EK)bless those who curse you, and (EL)pray for those who spitefully use you. 29 (EM)To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. (EN)And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. 30 (EO)Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. 31 (EP)And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.

32 (EQ)“But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 (ER)And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. 35 But (ES)love your enemies, (ET)do good, and (EU)lend, [aj]hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and (EV)you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. 36 (EW)Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.

Do Not Judge(EX)

37 (EY)“Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. (EZ)Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 (FA)Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your (FB)bosom. For (FC)with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”

39 And He spoke a parable to them: (FD)“Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch? 40 (FE)A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher. 41 (FF)And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye? 42 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother’s eye.

A Tree Is Known by Its Fruit(FG)

43 (FH)“For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 For (FI)every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. 45 (FJ)A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil [ak]treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out (FK)of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Build on the Rock(FL)

46 (FM)“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say? 47 (FN)Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was [al]founded on the rock. 49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it [am]fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”

Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant(FO)

Now when He concluded all His sayings in the hearing of the people, He (FP)entered Capernaum. And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear to him, was sick and ready to die. So when he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to Him, pleading with Him to come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they begged Him earnestly, saying that the one for whom He should do this was deserving, “for he loves our nation, and has built us a synagogue.”

Then Jesus went with them. And when He was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof. Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But (FQ)say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man placed under (FR)authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.

When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed Him, “I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!” 10 And those who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well [an]who had been sick.

Jesus Raises the Son of the Widow of Nain

11 Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. 12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, He had (FS)compassion on her and said to her, (FT)“Do not weep.” 14 Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, (FU)arise.” 15 So he who was dead (FV)sat up and began to speak. And He (FW)presented him to his mother.

16 (FX)Then fear [ao]came upon all, and they (FY)glorified God, saying, (FZ)“A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, (GA)“God has visited His people.” 17 And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.

John the Baptist Sends Messengers to Jesus(GB)

18 (GC)Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things. 19 And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to [ap]Jesus, saying, “Are You (GD)the Coming One, or [aq]do we look for another?”

20 When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’ ” 21 And that very hour He cured many of [ar]infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight.

22 (GE)Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: (GF)that the blind (GG)see, the lame (GH)walk, the lepers are (GI)cleansed, the deaf (GJ)hear, the dead are raised, (GK)the poor have the gospel preached to them. 23 And blessed is he who is not [as]offended because of Me.”

24 (GL)When the messengers of John had departed, He began to speak to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings’ courts. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is he of whom it is written:

(GM)‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’

28 For I say to you, among those born of women there is [at]not a (GN)greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

29 And when all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors [au]justified God, (GO)having been baptized with the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and [av]lawyers rejected (GP)the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.

31 [aw]And the Lord said, (GQ)“To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying:

‘We played the flute for you,
And you did not dance;
We mourned to you,
And you did not weep.’

33 For (GR)John the Baptist came (GS)neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man has come (GT)eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a [ax]winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35 (GU)But wisdom is justified by all her children.”

A Sinful Woman Forgiven

36 (GV)Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. 37 And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, 38 and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, (GW)“This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.”

40 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”

So he said, “Teacher, say it.”

41 “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred (GX)denarii, and the other fifty. 42 And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?”

43 Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.”

And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.” 44 Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no (GY)water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. 45 You gave Me no (GZ)kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. 46 (HA)You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. 47 (HB)Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”

48 Then He said to her, (HC)“Your sins are forgiven.”

49 And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, (HD)“Who is this who even forgives sins?”

50 Then He said to the woman, (HE)“Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

Many Women Minister to Jesus

Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city and village, preaching and [ay]bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him, and (HF)certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and [az]infirmities—Mary called Magdalene, (HG)out of whom had come seven demons, and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others who provided for [ba]Him from their [bb]substance.

The Parable of the Sower(HH)

(HI)And when a great multitude had gathered, and they had come to Him from every city, He spoke by a parable: “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the wayside; and it was trampled down, and the birds of the air devoured it. Some fell on rock; and as soon as it sprang up, it withered away because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it. But others fell on good ground, sprang up, and yielded [bc]a crop a hundredfold.” When He had said these things He cried, (HJ)“He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

The Purpose of Parables(HK)

(HL)Then His disciples asked Him, saying, “What does this parable mean?”

10 And He said, “To you it has been given to know the [bd]mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is given in parables, that

(HM)‘Seeing they may not see,
And hearing they may not understand.’

The Parable of the Sower Explained(HN)

11 (HO)“Now the parable is this: The seed is the (HP)word of God. 12 Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13 But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of [be]temptation fall away. 14 Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, (HQ)riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. 15 But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with (HR)patience.[bf]

The Parable of the Revealed Light(HS)

16 (HT)“No one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but sets it on a lampstand, that those who enter may see the (HU)light. 17 (HV)For nothing is secret that will not be (HW)revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light. 18 Therefore take heed how you hear. (HX)For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he [bg]seems to (HY)have will be taken from him.”

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers Come to Him(HZ)

19 (IA)Then His mother and brothers came to Him, and could not approach Him because of the crowd. 20 And it was told Him by some, who said, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see You.”

21 But He answered and said to them, “My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.”

Wind and Wave Obey Jesus(IB)

22 (IC)Now it happened, on a certain day, that He got into a boat with His disciples. And He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side of the lake.” And they launched out. 23 But as they sailed He fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water, and were in [bh]jeopardy. 24 And they came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!”

Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 But He said to them, (ID)“Where is your faith?”

And they were afraid, and marveled, saying to one another, (IE)“Who can this be? For He commands even the winds and water, and they obey Him!”

A Demon-Possessed Man Healed(IF)

26 (IG)Then they sailed to the country of the [bi]Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 And when He stepped out on the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons [bj]for a long time. And he wore no clothes, nor did he live in a house but in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he (IH)cried out, fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, (II)“What have I to do with (IJ)You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!” 29 For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness.

30 Jesus asked him, saying, “What is your name?”

And he said, “Legion,” because many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged Him that He would not command them to go out (IK)into the abyss.

32 Now a herd of many (IL)swine was feeding there on the mountain. So they begged Him that He would permit them to enter them. And He permitted them. 33 Then the demons went out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the lake and drowned.

34 When those who fed them saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then they went out to see what had happened, and came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had departed, (IM)sitting at the (IN)feet of Jesus, clothed and in his (IO)right mind. And they were afraid. 36 They also who had seen it told them by what means he who had been demon-possessed was [bk]healed. 37 (IP)Then the whole multitude of the surrounding region of the [bl]Gadarenes (IQ)asked Him to (IR)depart from them, for they were seized with great (IS)fear. And He got into the boat and returned.

38 Now (IT)the man from whom the demons had departed begged Him that he might be with Him. But Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” And he went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.

A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed

40 So it was, when Jesus returned, that the multitude welcomed Him, for they were all waiting for Him. 41 (IU)And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at Jesus’ feet and begged Him to come to his house, 42 for he had an only daughter about twelve years of age, and she (IV)was dying.

But as He went, the multitudes thronged Him. 43 (IW)Now a woman, having a (IX)flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any, 44 came from behind and (IY)touched the border of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped.

45 And Jesus said, “Who touched Me?”

When all denied it, Peter [bm]and those with him said, “Master, the multitudes throng and press You, [bn]and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’

46 But Jesus said, “Somebody touched Me, for I perceived (IZ)power going out from Me.” 47 Now when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before Him, she declared to Him in the presence of all the people the reason she had touched Him and how she was healed immediately.

48 And He said to her, “Daughter, [bo]be of good cheer; (JA)your faith has made you well. (JB)Go in peace.”

49 (JC)While He was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the [bp]Teacher.”

50 But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, “Do not be afraid; (JD)only believe, and she will be made well.” 51 When He came into the house, He permitted no one to go [bq]in except [br]Peter, James, and John, and the father and mother of the girl. 52 Now all wept and mourned for her; but He said, (JE)“Do not weep; she is not dead, (JF)but sleeping.” 53 And they ridiculed Him, knowing that she was dead.

54 But He [bs]put them all outside, took her by the hand and called, saying, “Little girl, (JG)arise.” 55 Then her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And He commanded that she be given something to eat. 56 And her parents were astonished, but (JH)He charged them to tell no one what had happened.

Sending Out the Twelve(JI)

Then (JJ)He called His twelve disciples together and (JK)gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. (JL)He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. (JM)And He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece.

(JN)“Whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. (JO)And whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, (JP)shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”

(JQ)So they departed and went through the towns, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

Herod Seeks to See Jesus(JR)

(JS)Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by Him; and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead, and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again. Herod said, “John I have beheaded, but who is this of whom I hear such things?” (JT)So he sought to see Him.

Feeding the Five Thousand(JU)

10 (JV)And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. (JW)Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 11 But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. 12 (JX)When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted place here.”

13 But He said to them, “You give them something to eat.”

And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we go and buy food for all these people.” 14 For there were about five thousand men.

Then He said to His disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of fifty.” 15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.

16 Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He (JY)blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude. 17 So they all ate and were [bt]filled, and twelve baskets of the leftover fragments were taken up by them.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ(JZ)

18 (KA)And it happened, as He was alone praying, that His disciples joined Him, and He asked them, saying, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”

19 So they answered and said, (KB)“John the Baptist, but some say Elijah; and others say that one of the old prophets has risen again.”

20 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

(KC)Peter answered and said, “The Christ of God.”

Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection(KD)

21 (KE)And He strictly warned and commanded them to tell this to no one, 22 saying, (KF)“The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.”

Take Up the Cross and Follow Him(KG)

23 (KH)Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross [bu]daily, and follow Me. 24 (KI)For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. 25 (KJ)For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost? 26 (KK)For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be (KL)ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father’s, and of the holy angels. 27 (KM)But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the kingdom of God.”

Jesus Transfigured on the Mount(KN)

28 (KO)Now it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, that He took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening. 30 And behold, two men talked with Him, who were (KP)Moses and (KQ)Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of His [bv]decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 But Peter and those with him (KR)were heavy with sleep; and when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who stood with Him. 33 Then it happened, as they were parting from Him, that Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three [bw]tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said.

34 While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were fearful as they entered the (KS)cloud. 35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, (KT)“This is [bx]My beloved Son. (KU)Hear Him!” 36 When the voice had ceased, Jesus was found alone. (KV)But they kept quiet, and told no one in those days any of the things they had seen.

A Boy Is Healed(KW)

37 (KX)Now it happened on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, that a great multitude met Him. 38 Suddenly a man from the multitude cried out, saying, “Teacher, I implore You, look on my son, for he is my only child. 39 And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out; it convulses him so that he foams at the mouth; and it departs from him with great difficulty, bruising him. 40 So I implored Your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.”

41 Then Jesus answered and said, “O [by]faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and [bz]bear with you? Bring your son here.” 42 And as he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him. Then Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the child, and gave him back to his father.

Jesus Again Predicts His Death(KY)

43 And they were all amazed at the majesty of God.

But while everyone marveled at all the things which Jesus did, He said to His disciples, 44 (KZ)“Let these words sink down into your ears, for the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.” 45 (LA)But they did not understand this saying, and it was hidden from them so that they did not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this saying.

Who Is the Greatest?(LB)

46 (LC)Then a dispute arose among them as to which of them would be greatest. 47 And Jesus, (LD)perceiving the thought of their heart, took a (LE)little child and set him by Him, 48 and said to them, (LF)“Whoever receives this little child in My name receives Me; and (LG)whoever receives Me (LH)receives Him who sent Me. (LI)For he who is least among you all will be great.”

Jesus Forbids Sectarianism(LJ)

49 (LK)Now John answered and said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow with us.”

50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid him, for (LL)he who is not against [ca]us is on [cb]our side.”

A Samaritan Village Rejects the Savior

51 Now it came to pass, when the time had come for (LM)Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem, 52 and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him. 53 But (LN)they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem. 54 And when His disciples (LO)James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, [cc]just as (LP)Elijah did?”

55 But He turned and rebuked them, [cd]and said, “You do not know what manner of (LQ)spirit you are of. 56 [ce]For (LR)the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them. And they went to another village.

The Cost of Discipleship(LS)

57 (LT)Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.”

58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man (LU)has nowhere to lay His head.”

59 (LV)Then He said to another, “Follow Me.”

But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”

60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.”

61 And another also said, “Lord, (LW)I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.”

62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is (LX)fit for the kingdom of God.”

The Seventy Sent Out

10 After these things the Lord appointed [cf]seventy others also, and (LY)sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. Then He said to them, (LZ)“The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore (MA)pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. Go your way; (MB)behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves. (MC)Carry neither money bag, knapsack, nor sandals; and (MD)greet no one along the road. (ME)But whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it; if not, it will return to you. (MF)And remain in the same house, (MG)eating and drinking such things as they give, for (MH)the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house. Whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. (MI)And heal the sick there, and say to them, (MJ)‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whatever city you enter, and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11 (MK)‘The very dust of your city which clings to [cg]us we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near you.’ 12 [ch]But I say to you that (ML)it will be more tolerable in that Day for Sodom than for that city.

Woe to the Impenitent Cities(MM)

13 (MN)“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! (MO)For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 (MP)And you, Capernaum, [ci]who are (MQ)exalted to heaven, (MR)will be brought down to Hades. 16 (MS)He who hears you hears Me, (MT)he who rejects you rejects Me, and (MU)he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.”

The Seventy Return with Joy

17 Then (MV)the [cj]seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”

18 And He said to them, (MW)“I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, (MX)I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but [ck]rather rejoice because (MY)your names are written in heaven.”

Jesus Rejoices in the Spirit(MZ)

21 (NA)In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. 22 (NB)All[cl] things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and (NC)no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.

23 Then He turned to His disciples and said privately, (ND)“Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see; 24 for I tell you (NE)that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and have not seen it, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it.

The Parable of the Good Samaritan(NF)

25 And behold, a certain [cm]lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, (NG)“Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

26 He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?

27 So he answered and said, (NH)‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and (NI)‘your neighbor as yourself.’

28 And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and (NJ)you will live.”

29 But he, wanting to (NK)justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

30 Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among [cn]thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, (NL)he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain (NM)Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had (NN)compassion. 34 So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 On the next day, [co]when he departed, he took out two (NO)denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ 36 So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?”

37 And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.”

Then Jesus said to him, (NP)“Go and do likewise.”

Mary and Martha Worship and Serve

38 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named (NQ)Martha welcomed Him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, (NR)who also (NS)sat at [cp]Jesus’ feet and heard His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”

41 And [cq]Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But (NT)one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

The Model Prayer(NU)

11 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”

So He said to them, “When you pray, say:

(NV)Our[cr] Father [cs]in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
[ct]Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us day by day our daily bread.
And (NW)forgive us our sins,
For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And do not lead us into temptation,
[cu]But deliver us from the evil one.”

A Friend Comes at Midnight

And He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within and say, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’? I say to you, (NX)though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.

Keep Asking, Seeking, Knocking(NY)

(NZ)“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; (OA)seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 (OB)If a son asks for [cv]bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give (OC)good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

A House Divided Cannot Stand(OD)

14 (OE)And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. So it was, when the demon had gone out, that the mute spoke; and the multitudes marveled. 15 But some of them said, (OF)“He casts out demons by [cw]Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”

16 Others, testing Him, (OG)sought from Him a sign from heaven. 17 (OH)But (OI)He, knowing their thoughts, said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and a house divided against a house falls. 18 If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? Because you say I cast out demons by Beelzebub. 19 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 20 But if I cast out demons (OJ)with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 (OK)When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are in peace. 22 But (OL)when a stronger than he comes upon him and overcomes him, he takes from him all his armor in which he trusted, and divides his [cx]spoils. 23 (OM)He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters.

An Unclean Spirit Returns(ON)

24 (OO)“When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 And when he comes, he finds it swept and put in order. 26 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and (OP)the last state of that man is worse than the first.”

Keeping the Word

27 And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, (OQ)“Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!”

28 But He said, (OR)“More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

Seeking a Sign(OS)

29 (OT)And while the crowds were thickly gathered together, He began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks a (OU)sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah [cy]the prophet. 30 For as (OV)Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation. 31 (OW)The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a (OX)greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for (OY)they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.

The Lamp of the Body(OZ)

33 (PA)“No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a (PB)basket, but on a lampstand, that those who come in may see the light. 34 (PC)The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is [cz]good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is [da]bad, your body also is full of darkness. 35 Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole body will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light.”

Woe to the Pharisees and Lawyers

37 And as He spoke, a certain Pharisee asked Him to dine with him. So He went in and sat down to eat. 38 (PD)When the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that He had not first washed before dinner.

39 (PE)Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but (PF)your inward part is full of [db]greed and wickedness. 40 Foolish ones! Did not (PG)He who made the outside make the inside also? 41 (PH)But rather give alms of [dc]such things as you have; then indeed all things are clean to you.

42 (PI)“But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and (PJ)pass by justice and the (PK)love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 43 (PL)Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the [dd]best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 (PM)Woe to you, [de]scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! (PN)For you are like graves which are not seen, and the men who walk over them are not aware of them.

45 Then one of the lawyers answered and said to Him, “Teacher, by saying these things You reproach us also.”

46 And He said, “Woe to you also, lawyers! (PO)For you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 (PP)Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. 48 In fact, you bear witness that you approve the deeds of your fathers; for they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 Therefore the wisdom of God also said, (PQ)‘I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’ 50 that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, 51 (PR)from the blood of Abel to (PS)the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the temple. Yes, I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.

52 (PT)“Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered.”

53 [df]And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to cross-examine Him about many things, 54 lying in wait for Him, [dg]and (PU)seeking to catch Him in something He might say, [dh]that they might accuse Him.

Beware of Hypocrisy(PV)

12 In (PW)the meantime, when an innumerable multitude of people had gathered together, so that they trampled one another, He began to say to His disciples first of all, (PX)“Beware of the [di]leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. (PY)For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have spoken in the ear in inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.

Jesus Teaches the Fear of God(PZ)

(QA)“And I say to you, (QB)My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, (QC)fear Him!

“Are not five sparrows sold for two [dj]copper coins? And (QD)not one of them is forgotten before God. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Confess Christ Before Men(QE)

(QF)“Also I say to you, whoever confesses Me (QG)before men, him the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God. But he who (QH)denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.

10 “And (QI)anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but to him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven.

11 (QJ)“Now when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say. 12 For the Holy Spirit will (QK)teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 Then one from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

14 But He said to him, (QL)“Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?” 15 And He said to them, (QM)“Take heed and beware of [dk]covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”

16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17 And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ 18 So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, (QN)“Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; (QO)eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night (QP)your soul will be required of you; (QQ)then whose will those things be which you have provided?’

21 “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, (QR)and is not rich toward God.”

Do Not Worry(QS)

22 Then He said to His disciples, “Therefore I say to you, (QT)do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on. 23 Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and (QU)God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds? 25 And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? 26 If you then are not able to do the least, why [dl]are you anxious for the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even (QV)Solomon in all his glory was not [dm]arrayed like one of these. 28 If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of (QW)little faith?

29 “And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind. 30 For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father (QX)knows that you need these things. 31 (QY)But seek [dn]the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you.

32 “Do not fear, little flock, for (QZ)it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 (RA)Sell what you have and give (RB)alms; (RC)provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

The Faithful Servant and the Evil Servant(RD)

35 (RE)“Let your waist be girded and (RF)your lamps burning; 36 and you yourselves be like men who wait for their master, when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks they may open to him immediately. 37 (RG)Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching. Assuredly, I say to you that he will gird himself and have them sit down to eat, and will come and serve them. 38 And if he should come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. 39 (RH)But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would [do]have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 40 (RI)Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

41 Then Peter said to Him, “Lord, do You speak this parable only to us, or to all people?

42 And the Lord said, (RJ)“Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his master will make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food [dp]in due season? 43 Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 44 (RK)Truly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all that he has. 45 (RL)But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and be drunk, 46 the master of that servant will come on a (RM)day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. 47 And (RN)that servant who (RO)knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48 (RP)But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.

Christ Brings Division(RQ)

49 (RR)“I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But (RS)I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am till it is (RT)accomplished! 51 (RU)Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, (RV)but rather division. 52 (RW)For from now on five in one house will be divided: three against two, and two against three. 53 (RX)Father will be divided against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

Discern the Time(RY)

54 Then He also said to the multitudes, (RZ)“Whenever you see a cloud rising out of the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming’; and so it is. 55 And when you see the (SA)south wind blow, you say, ‘There will be hot weather’; and there is. 56 Hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky and of the earth, but how is it you do not discern (SB)this time?

Make Peace with Your Adversary

57 “Yes, and why, even of yourselves, do you not judge what is right? 58 (SC)When you go with your adversary to the magistrate, make every effort (SD)along the way to settle with him, lest he drag you to the judge, the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 59 I tell you, you shall not depart from there till you have paid the very last mite.”

Repent or Perish

13 There were present at that season some who told Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had [dq]mingled with their sacrifices. And Jesus answered and said to them, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.”

The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree

He also spoke this parable: (SE)“A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, ‘Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why does it [dr]use up the ground?’ But he answered and said to him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it. [ds]And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can (SF)cut it down.’ ”

A Spirit of Infirmity

10 Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way [dt]raise herself up. 12 But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, “Woman, you are loosed from your (SG)infirmity.” 13 (SH)And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.

14 But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had (SI)healed on the Sabbath; and he said to the crowd, (SJ)“There are six days on which men ought to work; therefore come and be healed on them, and (SK)not on the Sabbath day.”

15 The Lord then answered him and said, [du]“Hypocrite! (SL)Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it? 16 So ought not this woman, (SM)being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound—think of it—for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?” 17 And when He said these things, all His adversaries were put to shame; and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were (SN)done by Him.

The Parable of the Mustard Seed(SO)

18 (SP)Then He said, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and put in his garden; and it grew and became a [dv]large tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.”

The Parable of the Leaven(SQ)

20 And again He said, “To what shall I liken the kingdom of God? 21 It is like [dw]leaven, which a woman took and hid in three (SR)measures[dx] of meal till it was all leavened.”

The Narrow Way(SS)

22 (ST)And He went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem. 23 Then one said to Him, “Lord, are there (SU)few who are saved?”

And He said to them, 24 (SV)“Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for (SW)many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 (SX)When once the Master of the house has risen up and (SY)shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, (SZ)‘Lord, Lord, open for us,’ and He will answer and say to you, (TA)‘I do not know you, where you are from,’ 26 then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.’ 27 (TB)But He will say, ‘I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. (TC)Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.’ 28 (TD)There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, (TE)when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves thrust out. 29 They will come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and sit down in the kingdom of God. 30 (TF)And indeed there are last who will be first, and there are first who will be last.”

31 [dy]On that very day some Pharisees came, saying to Him, “Get out and depart from here, for Herod wants to kill You.”

32 And He said to them, “Go, tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day (TG)I shall be [dz]perfected.’ 33 Nevertheless I must journey today, tomorrow, and the day following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem.

Jesus Laments over Jerusalem(TH)

34 (TI)“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing! 35 See! (TJ)Your house is left to you desolate; and [ea]assuredly, I say to you, you shall not see Me until the time comes when you say, (TK)‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’

A Man with Dropsy Healed on the Sabbath

14 Now it happened, as He went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath, that they watched Him closely. And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had dropsy. And Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, (TL)“Is it lawful to heal on the [eb]Sabbath?”

But they kept silent. And He took him and healed him, and let him go. Then He answered them, saying, (TM)“Which of you, having a [ec]donkey or an ox that has fallen into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?” And they could not answer Him regarding these things.

Take the Lowly Place

So He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noted how they chose the best places, saying to them: “When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him; and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 (TN)But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you. 11 (TO)For whoever exalts himself will be [ed]humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

12 Then He also said to him who invited Him, “When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid. 13 But when you give a feast, invite (TP)the poor, the [ee]maimed, the lame, the blind. 14 And you will be (TQ)blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

The Parable of the Great Supper(TR)

15 Now when one of those who sat at the table with Him heard these things, he said to Him, (TS)“Blessed is he who shall eat [ef]bread in the kingdom of God!”

16 (TT)Then He said to him, “A certain man gave a great supper and invited many, 17 and (TU)sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’ 18 But they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.’ 19 And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.’ 20 Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ 21 So that servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and the [eg]maimed and the lame and the blind.’ 22 And the servant said, ‘Master, it is done as you commanded, and still there is room.’ 23 Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. 24 For I say to you (TV)that none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.’ ”

Leaving All to Follow Christ(TW)

25 Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, 26 (TX)“If anyone comes to Me (TY)and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, (TZ)yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And (UA)whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28 For (UB)which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it 29 lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’? 31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace. 33 So likewise, whoever of you (UC)does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.

Tasteless Salt Is Worthless(UD)

34 (UE)“Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? 35 It is neither fit for the land nor for the [eh]dunghill, but men throw it out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

The Parable of the Lost Sheep(UF)

15 Then (UG)all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to Him to hear Him. And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man [ei]receives sinners (UH)and eats with them.” So He spoke this parable to them, saying:

(UI)“What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, (UJ)‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep (UK)which was lost!’ I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents (UL)than over ninety-nine [ej]just persons who (UM)need no repentance.

The Parable of the Lost Coin

“Or what woman, having ten silver [ek]coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I lost!’ 10 Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

The Parable of the Lost Son

11 Then He said: “A certain man had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them (UN)his livelihood. 13 And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with [el]prodigal living. 14 But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want. 15 Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the [em]pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything.

17 “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, (UO)I have sinned against heaven and before you, 19 and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.” ’

20 “And he arose and came to his father. But (UP)when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven (UQ)and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

22 “But the father said to his servants, [en]‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. 23 And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; 24 (UR)for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.

25 “Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and because he has received him safe and sound, your father has killed the fatted calf.’

28 “But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him. 29 So he answered and said to his father, ‘Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends. 30 But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him.’

31 “And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. 32 It was right that we should make merry and be glad, (US)for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’ ”

The Parable of the Unjust Steward

16 He also said to His disciples: “There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and an accusation was brought to him that this man was [eo]wasting his goods. So he called him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an (UT)account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.’

“Then the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I do? For my master is taking the stewardship away from me. I cannot dig; I am ashamed to beg. I have resolved what to do, that when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.’

“So he called every one of his master’s debtors to him, and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ And he said, ‘A hundred [ep]measures of oil.’ So he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ So he said, ‘A hundred [eq]measures of wheat.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than (UU)the sons of light.

“And I say to you, (UV)make friends for yourselves by unrighteous [er]mammon, that when [es]you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home. 10 (UW)He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. 11 Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 12 And if you have not been faithful in what is another man’s, who will give you what is your (UX)own?

13 (UY)“No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”

The Law, the Prophets, and the Kingdom

14 Now the Pharisees, (UZ)who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they [et]derided Him. 15 And He said to them, “You are those who (VA)justify yourselves (VB)before men, but (VC)God knows your hearts. For (VD)what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

16 (VE)“The law and the prophets were until John. Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing into it. 17 (VF)And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one [eu]tittle of the law to fail.

18 (VG)“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced from her husband commits adultery.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and [ev]fared sumptuously every day. 20 But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, 21 desiring to be fed with [ew]the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to (VH)Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and (VI)cool my tongue; for I (VJ)am tormented in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Son, (VK)remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. 26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’

27 “Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ 29 Abraham said to him, (VL)‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 But he said to him, (VM)‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, (VN)neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ ”

Jesus Warns of Offenses(VO)

17 Then He said to the disciples, (VP)“It is impossible that no [ex]offenses should come, but (VQ)woe to him through whom they do come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should [ey]offend one of these little ones. Take heed to yourselves. (VR)If your brother sins [ez]against you, (VS)rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns [fa]to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”

Faith and Duty(VT)

And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.”

(VU)So the Lord said, “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. And which of you, having a servant plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down to eat’? But will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself (VV)and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink’? Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded [fb]him? I think not. 10 So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, ‘We are (VW)unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.’ ”

Ten Lepers Cleansed

11 Now it happened (VX)as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, (VY)who stood afar off. 13 And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”

14 So when He saw them, He said to them, (VZ)“Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed.

15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice (WA)glorified God, 16 and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a (WB)Samaritan.

17 So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? 18 Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 (WC)And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.”

The Coming of the Kingdom(WD)

20 Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation; 21 (WE)nor will they say, [fc]‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, (WF)the kingdom of God is [fd]within you.”

22 Then He said to the disciples, (WG)“The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 (WH)And they will say to you, [fe]‘Look here!’ or ‘Look there!’ Do not go after them or follow them. 24 (WI)For as the lightning that flashes out of one part under heaven shines to the other part under heaven, so also the Son of Man will be in His day. 25 (WJ)But first He must suffer many things and be (WK)rejected by this generation. 26 (WL)And as it (WM)was in the (WN)days of (WO)Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27 They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the (WP)day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and (WQ)destroyed them all. 28 (WR)Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; 29 but on (WS)the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man (WT)is revealed.

31 “In that day, he (WU)who is on the housetop, and his [ff]goods are in the house, let him not come down to take them away. And likewise the one who is in the field, let him not turn back. 32 (WV)Remember Lot’s wife. 33 (WW)Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. 34 (WX)I tell you, in that night there will be two [fg]men in one bed: the one will be taken and the other will be left. 35 (WY)Two women will be grinding together: the one will be taken and the other left. 36 [fh]Two men will be in the field: the one will be taken and the other left.”

37 And they answered and said to Him, (WZ)“Where, Lord?”

So He said to them, “Wherever the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together.”

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

18 Then He spoke a parable to them, that men (XA)always ought to pray and not lose heart, saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor [fi]regard man. Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, [fj]‘Get justice for me from my adversary.’ And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man, (XB)yet because this widow troubles me I will [fk]avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’ ”

Then the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge said. And (XC)shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? I tell you (XD)that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?”

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

Also He spoke this parable to some (XE)who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee (XF)stood and prayed thus with himself, (XG)‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; (XH)for everyone who exalts himself will be [fl]humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Jesus Blesses Little Children(XI)

15 (XJ)Then they also brought infants to Him that He might touch them; but when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to Him and said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for (XK)of such is the kingdom of God. 17 (XL)Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.”

Jesus Counsels the Rich Young Ruler(XM)

18 (XN)Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

19 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but (XO)One, that is, God. 20 You know the commandments: (XP)‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ (XQ)‘Honor your father and your mother.’

21 And he said, “All (XR)these things I have kept from my youth.”

22 So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. (XS)Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

23 But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.

With God All Things Are Possible(XT)

24 And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, (XU)“How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 And those who heard it said, “Who then can be saved?”

27 But He said, (XV)“The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”

28 (XW)Then Peter said, “See, we have left [fm]all and followed You.”

29 So He said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, (XX)there is no one who has left house or parents or brothers or wife or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 (XY)who shall not receive many times more in this present time, and in the age to come eternal life.”

Jesus a Third Time Predicts His Death and Resurrection(XZ)

31 (YA)Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things (YB)that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be [fn]accomplished. 32 For (YC)He will be delivered to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon. 33 They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.”

34 (YD)But they understood none of these things; this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know the things which were spoken.

A Blind Man Receives His Sight(YE)

35 (YF)Then it happened, as He was coming near Jericho, that a certain blind man sat by the road begging. 36 And hearing a multitude passing by, he asked what it meant. 37 So they told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. 38 And he cried out, saying, “Jesus, (YG)Son of David, have mercy on me!”

39 Then those who went before warned him that he should be quiet; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

40 So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be brought to Him. And when he had come near, He asked him, 41 saying, “What do you want Me to do for you?”

He said, “Lord, that I may receive my sight.”

42 Then Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; (YH)your faith has made you well.” 43 And immediately he received his sight, and followed Him, (YI)glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Jesus Comes to Zacchaeus’ House

19 Then Jesus entered and passed through (YJ)Jericho. Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. And he sought to (YK)see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up [fo]and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, [fp]make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” So he [fq]made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. But when they saw it, they all [fr]complained, saying, (YL)“He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.”

Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the (YM)poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by (YN)false accusation, (YO)I restore fourfold.”

And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because (YP)he also is (YQ)a son of Abraham; 10 (YR)for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

The Parable of the Minas(YS)

11 Now as they heard these things, He spoke another parable, because He was near Jerusalem and because (YT)they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately. 12 (YU)Therefore He said: “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants, delivered to them ten [fs]minas, and said to them, ‘Do business till I come.’ 14 (YV)But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We will not have this man to reign over us.’

15 “And so it was that when he returned, having received the kingdom, he then commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. 16 Then came the first, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten minas.’ 17 And he said to him, (YW)‘Well done, good servant; because you were (YX)faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.’ 18 And the second came, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned five minas.’ 19 Likewise he said to him, ‘You also be over five cities.’

20 “Then another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I have kept put away in a handkerchief. 21 (YY)For I feared you, because you are [ft]an austere man. You collect what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 And he said to him, (YZ)‘Out of your own mouth I will judge you, you wicked servant. (ZA)You knew that I was an austere man, collecting what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow. 23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’

24 “And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to him who has ten minas.’ 25 (But they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas.’) 26 ‘For I say to you, (ZB)that to everyone who has will be given; and from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 27 But bring here those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, and slay them before me.’ ”

The Triumphal Entry(ZC)

28 When He had said this, (ZD)He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 (ZE)And it came to pass, when He drew near to [fu]Bethphage and (ZF)Bethany, at the mountain called (ZG)Olivet, that He sent two of His disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village opposite you, where as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it here. 31 And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you loosing it?’ thus you shall say to him, ‘Because the Lord has need of it.’ ”

32 So those who were sent went their way and found it just (ZH)as He had said to them. 33 But as they were loosing the colt, the owners of it said to them, “Why are you loosing the colt?”

34 And they said, “The Lord has need of him.” 35 Then they brought him to Jesus. (ZI)And they threw their own clothes on the colt, and they set Jesus on him. 36 And as He went, many spread their clothes on the road.

37 Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to (ZJ)rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, 38 saying:

(ZK)‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!’
(ZL)Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

39 And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”

40 But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, (ZM)the stones would immediately cry out.”

Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

41 Now as He drew near, He saw the city and (ZN)wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this (ZO)your day, the things that (ZP)make for your (ZQ)peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For days will come upon you when your enemies will (ZR)build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, 44 (ZS)and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and (ZT)they will not leave in you one stone upon another, (ZU)because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple(ZV)

45 (ZW)Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who [fv]bought and sold in it, 46 saying to them, “It is written, (ZX)‘My house [fw]is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a (ZY)‘den of thieves.’

47 And He (ZZ)was teaching daily in the temple. But (AAA)the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him, 48 and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to (AAB)hear Him.
