God’s Grace to Unfaithful Jerusalem

16 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, (A)make known to Jerusalem her abominations, and say, ‘This is what the Lord [a]God says to Jerusalem: “Your origin and your birth are from the land of the Canaanite; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite. As for your birth, (B)on the day you were born your navel cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water for cleansing; you were not rubbed with salt or even wrapped in cloths. No eye looked with pity on you to do any of these things for you, to have compassion on you. Rather you were thrown out into the [b](C)open field, [c]for you were abhorred on the day you were born.

“When I passed by you and saw you squirming in your blood, I said to you while you were in your blood, ‘Live!’ Yes, I said to you while you were in your blood, ‘Live!’ I (D)made you [d]very numerous, like plants of the field. Then you grew up, became tall and reached the age for fine jewelry; your breasts were formed and your hair had grown. Yet you were naked and bare.

“Then I passed by you and saw you, and behold, [e]you were at the time for love; so I (E)spread My [f]garment over you and covered your nakedness. I also (F)swore an oath to you and (G)entered into a covenant with you so that you (H)became Mine,” declares the Lord God. “Then I bathed you with water, washed off your blood from you, and (I)anointed you with oil. 10 I also clothed you with (J)colorfully woven cloth and put sandals of [g]fine leather on your feet; and I wrapped you with fine linen and covered you with silk. 11 I adorned you with jewelry, put (K)bracelets on your wrists, and a (L)necklace around your neck. 12 I also put a (M)ring in your nose, earrings in your ears, and a (N)beautiful crown on your head. 13 So you were adorned with (O)gold and silver, and your dress was of fine linen, silk, and colorfully woven cloth. You ate fine flour, honey, and oil; so you were exceedingly beautiful and advanced to (P)royalty. 14 Then your (Q)fame spread among the nations on account of your beauty, for it was (R)perfect because of My splendor which I bestowed on you,” declares the Lord God.

15 “But you (S)trusted in your beauty and (T)became unfaithful because of your fame, and you poured out your [h]obscene practices on every passer-by to whom it might be tempting. 16 You took some of your clothes, made for yourself [i]high places of various colors, and committed prostitution on them, which should not come about nor happen. 17 You also took your beautiful [j](U)jewels made of My gold and of My silver, which I had given you, and made for yourself male images so that you might commit prostitution with them. 18 Then you took your colorfully woven cloth and covered them, and offered My oil and My incense before them. 19 Also (V)My bread which I gave you, fine flour, oil, and honey with which I fed you, [k]you would offer before them for a soothing aroma; so it happened,” declares the Lord God. 20 “Furthermore, you took your sons and daughters whom you had borne to (W)Me and (X)sacrificed them to [l]idols to be devoured. Were your obscene practices a trivial matter? 21 You slaughtered (Y)My children and offered them to [m]idols by (Z)making them pass through the fire. 22 And besides all your abominations and obscene practices, you did not remember the days of (AA)your youth, when you were naked and bare and squirming in your blood.

23 “Then it came about after all your wickedness (‘Woe, woe to you!’ declares the Lord God), 24 that you built yourself a (AB)shrine and made yourself a (AC)high place in every public square. 25 You built yourself a high place at the beginning of (AD)every street and made your beauty abominable, and you spread your legs to every passer-by and multiplied your obscene practice. 26 You also committed prostitution with the Egyptians, your [n]lustful neighbors, and multiplied your obscene practice to (AE)provoke Me to anger. 27 So behold, I have stretched out My hand against you and cut back your rations. And I turned you over to the desire of those who hate you, the (AF)daughters of the Philistines, who are ashamed of your outrageous conduct. 28 Moreover, you committed prostitution with the (AG)Assyrians because you were not satisfied; you committed prostitution with them and still were not satisfied. 29 You also multiplied your obscene practice with the land of merchants, Chaldea; yet even with this you were not satisfied.”’”

30 “How (AH)feverish is your heart,” declares the Lord God, “while you do all these things, the action of a [o](AI)bold prostitute! 31 When you built your shrine at the beginning of every street and made your high place in every public square, in (AJ)spurning a prostitute’s fee, you were not like a prostitute. 32 You adulteress wife, who takes strangers instead of her husband! 33 Men give gifts to all prostitutes, but you (AK)give your gifts to all your lovers and lavish favors on them so that they will come to you from every direction for your obscene practices. 34 So it is the opposite for you from those women in your obscene practices, in that you are not approached for prostitution, and in the fact that you pay a prostitute’s fee, and no fee is paid to you; so you are the opposite.”

35 Therefore, you prostitute, hear the word of the Lord. 36 This is what the Lord God says: “Because your lewdness was poured out and your nakedness uncovered through your obscene practices with your lovers and with all your detestable (AL)idols, and because of the blood of your sons that you gave to [p]idols, 37 therefore, behold, I am going to (AM)gather all your lovers whom you pleased, all those whom you loved as well as all those whom you (AN)hated. So I will gather them against you from every direction and (AO)expose your nakedness to them so that they may see all your nakedness. 38 So I will (AP)judge you as women who commit adultery or shed blood are judged; and I will bring on you the blood of (AQ)wrath and jealousy. 39 I will also hand you over to [q]your lovers, and they will tear down your shrines, demolish your high places, (AR)strip you of your clothing, take away your [r]jewels, and will leave you naked and bare. 40 They will [s]incite a (AS)crowd against you, and they will stone you and cut you to pieces with their swords. 41 And they will (AT)burn your houses with fire and execute judgments against you in the sight of many women. Then I will (AU)put an end to your prostitution, and you will also no longer pay [t]your lovers. 42 So I (AV)will satisfy My fury against you and My jealousy will leave you, and I will be pacified and (AW)no longer be angry. 43 Since you have (AX)not remembered the days of your youth but [u]have (AY)caused Me unrest by all these things, behold, I in turn will (AZ)bring your conduct down on your own head,” declares the Lord God, “so that you will not commit this outrageous sin in addition to all your other abominations.

44 “Behold, everyone who quotes (BA)proverbs will quote this proverb about you, saying, ‘Like [v]mother, like daughter.’ 45 You are the daughter of your mother, who loathed her husband and children. You are also the (BB)sister of your sisters, who (BC)loathed their husbands and children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite. 46 Now your (BD)older sister is Samaria, who lives [w]north of you with her [x]daughters; and your younger sister, who lives [y]south of you, is (BE)Sodom with her [z]daughters. 47 Yet you have not merely walked in their ways and [aa]committed their abominations; but, as if that were (BF)too little, you also acted (BG)more corruptly in all your conduct than they. 48 As I live,” declares the Lord God, “Sodom, your sister and her daughters have (BH)not done as you and your daughters have done! 49 Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had (BI)arrogance, (BJ)plenty of food, and (BK)carefree ease, but she did not [ab]help the (BL)poor and needy. 50 So they were haughty and committed (BM)abominations before Me. Therefore I (BN)removed them [ac]when I saw it. 51 Furthermore, Samaria did not commit half of your sins, for you have multiplied your abominations more than they. So you have made your sisters appear (BO)innocent by all your abominations which you have committed. 52 Also, bear your disgrace in that you have [ad]made judgment favorable for your sisters. Because of your sins in which you acted (BP)more abominably than they, they are more in the right than you. Yes, be also ashamed and bear your disgrace, in that you made your sisters appear innocent.

53 “Nevertheless, I will restore their fortunes, the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters, the fortunes of Samaria and her daughters, and [ae]along with them your own fortunes, 54 so that you will bear your disgrace and feel (BQ)ashamed for all that you have done when you become (BR)a consolation to them. 55 Your sisters, Sodom with her daughters and Samaria with her daughters, [af]will return to their former state, and you with your daughters will also return to your former state. 56 As the name of your sister Sodom was not heard from your lips in your day of pride, 57 before your (BS)wickedness was uncovered, [ag]so now you have become the (BT)disgrace of the daughters of [ah]Edom and of all who are around her, of the daughters of the Philistines—those surrounding you who despise you. 58 You have (BU)suffered the penalty of your outrageous sin and abominations,” the Lord declares. 59 For this is what the Lord God says: “I will also do with you as you have done, you who have (BV)despised the oath by breaking the covenant.

The Covenant Remembered

60 “Nevertheless, I will remember My covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an (BW)everlasting covenant with you. 61 Then you will (BX)remember your ways and be ashamed when you receive your sisters, both your older and your younger; and I will give them to you as daughters, but not because of your covenant. 62 So I will (BY)establish My covenant with you, and you shall (BZ)know that I am the Lord, 63 so that you may (CA)remember and be ashamed, and (CB)not open your mouth again because of your disgrace, when I have [ai](CC)forgiven you for all that you have done,” the Lord God declares.

Parable of Two Eagles and a Vine

17 Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, ask a riddle and present a (CD)parable to the house of Israel, [aj]saying, ‘This is what the Lord [ak]God says: “A great [al](CE)eagle with (CF)great wings, long pinions, and a full plumage of many colors came to [am](CG)Lebanon and took away the top of the [an]cedar. He broke off the [ao]topmost of its young twigs and brought it to a land of merchants; he set it in a [ap]city of traders. He also took [aq]from the seed of the land and planted [ar]it in [as](CH)fertile soil, a [at]meadow beside abundant waters; he set it like a (CI)willow. Then it sprouted and became a low, spreading vine with its branches turned toward him, but its roots remained under it. So it became a vine and produced shoots and sent out branches.

“But there was [au]another great eagle with great wings and much plumage; and behold, this vine turned its roots toward him and sent out its branches toward him from the beds where it was (CJ)planted, so that he might water it. It was planted in good [av]soil beside abundant waters, so that it would produce branches and bear fruit, and become a splendid vine.”’ Say, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “Will it thrive? Will he not pull up its roots and cut off its fruit, so that it withers—so that all its sprouting shoots wither? And neither by great [aw]strength nor by many people can it be raised from its roots again. 10 Behold, though it is planted, will it thrive? Will it not (CK)completely wither as soon as the east wind strikes it—wither on the beds where it grew?”’”

Zedekiah’s Rebellion

11 Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 12 “Say now to the (CL)rebellious house, ‘Do you not (CM)know what these things mean?’ Say, ‘Behold, the (CN)king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, took its king and leaders, and brought them to him in Babylon. 13 Then he took one of the royal [ax](CO)family and made a covenant with him, [ay]putting him under (CP)oath. He also took away the (CQ)mighty of the land, 14 so that the kingdom would (CR)be humbled, not exalting itself, but keeping his covenant so that it might continue. 15 But [az]he (CS)revolted against [ba]him by sending his messengers to Egypt so that they might give him horses and many [bb]troops. Will he succeed? Will he who does these things (CT)escape? Can he indeed break the covenant and escape? 16 As I live,’ declares the Lord God, ‘In the [bc]country of the king who [bd]put him on the throne, whose oath he (CU)despised and whose covenant he broke, [be](CV)in Babylon he shall certainly die. 17 (CW)Pharaoh with his mighty army and great contingent will not [bf]help him in the war, when they pile up assault ramps and build siege walls to eliminate many lives. 18 Now he despised the oath by breaking the covenant, and behold, he [bg](CX)pledged his allegiance, yet did all these things; he shall not escape.’” 19 Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: “As I live, My oath which he despised and My covenant which he broke, I will certainly [bh]inflict on his head. 20 And I will spread My (CY)net over him, and he will be (CZ)caught in My net. Then I will bring him to Babylon and (DA)enter into judgment with him there regarding the unfaithful act which he has committed against Me. 21 All the [bi](DB)choice men in all his troops will fall by the sword, and the survivors will be scattered to every wind; and you will know that I, the Lord, have spoken.”

22 This is what the Lord God says: “I will also take a sprig from the lofty top of the cedar and [bj]set it out; I will break off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I will plant it on a (DC)high and lofty mountain. 23 On the high mountain of Israel I will plant it, so that it may bring forth branches and bear fruit, and become a stately (DD)cedar. And [bk]birds of every [bl]kind will [bm]nest under it; they will [bn]nest in the shade of its branches. 24 All the (DE)trees of the field will know that I am the Lord; I bring down the high tree, exalt the low tree, dry up the green tree, and make the dry tree (DF)flourish. I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will perform it.”

God Deals Justly with Individuals

18 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, (DG)What do you people mean by using this proverb about the land of Israel, saying,

(DH)The fathers eat sour grapes,
[bo]But it is the children’s teeth that have become blunt’?

As I live,” declares the Lord [bp]God, “you certainly are not going to use this proverb in Israel anymore. Behold, (DI)all [bq]souls are Mine; the [br]soul of the father as well as the [bs]soul of the son is Mine. The [bt]soul who (DJ)sins will die.

“But if a man is righteous and practices justice and righteousness, if he does not (DK)eat at the mountain shrines or (DL)raise his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, or (DM)defile his neighbor’s wife or approach a woman during her menstrual period— and if a man does not oppress anyone, but (DN)restores to the debtor his pledge, (DO)does not commit robbery, but (DP)gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing, and if he does not [bu]lend money at (DQ)interest or take [bv](DR)interest, if he keeps his hand from injustice and (DS)executes true justice between one person and another, if he walks in (DT)My statutes and keeps My ordinances so as to deal faithfully—(DU)he is righteous and will certainly (DV)live,” declares the Lord God.

10 “However, he may father a violent son who sheds blood, and does any one of these things to a brother 11 (though he himself did not do any of these things), that is, he even eats at the mountain shrines, and (DW)defiles his neighbor’s wife, 12 oppresses the (DX)poor and needy, (DY)commits robbery, does not restore a pledge, but raises his eyes to the idols and (DZ)commits abomination, 13 (EA)lends money at interest and takes [bw]interest; will he live? He will not live! He has committed all these abominations, he shall certainly be put to death; his (EB)blood will be on himself.

14 “Now behold, he has fathered a son who saw all his father’s sins which he committed, but he has (EC)seen them and does not do likewise. 15 He does not eat at the mountain shrines or raise his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel; he has not defiled his neighbor’s wife, 16 nor oppressed anyone, nor retained a pledge, nor committed robbery; instead, he (ED)gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing, 17 he keeps his hand from [bx]the poor, does not take any kind of interest on loans, but executes My ordinances, and walks in My statutes; (EE)he will not die for his father’s guilt, he will certainly live. 18 As for his father, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother, and did what was not good among his people, behold, he will die for his guilt.

19 “Yet you say, ‘(EF)Why should the son not suffer the punishment for the father’s guilt?’ When the son has practiced (EG)justice and righteousness and has kept all My statutes and done them, he shall certainly live. 20 The person who (EH)sins will die. A (EI)son will not suffer the punishment for the father’s guilt, nor will a father suffer the punishment for the son’s guilt; the (EJ)righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself.

21 “But if the (EK)wicked person turns from all his sins which he has committed and keeps all My statutes and practices justice and righteousness, he shall certainly live; he shall not die. 22 (EL)All his offenses which he has committed will not be remembered against him; because of his (EM)righteousness which he has practiced, he will live. 23 (EN)Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked,” declares the Lord God, “[by]rather than that he would (EO)turn from his ways and live?

24 “But when a righteous person (EP)turns away from his righteousness, commits injustice and does according to all the abominations that the wicked person does, will he live? (EQ)All his righteous deeds which he has done will not be remembered for his (ER)treachery which he has committed and his sin which he has committed; for them he will die. 25 Yet you say, ‘(ES)The way of the Lord is not right.’ Hear now, house of Israel! Is (ET)My way not right? Is it not your ways that are not right? 26 When a righteous person turns away from his righteousness, commits injustice and dies because of it, for his injustice which he has committed he dies. 27 But when a wicked person turns away (EU)from his wickedness which he has committed and practices justice and righteousness, he will save his life. 28 Since he understood and turned away from all his offenses which he had committed, he shall certainly live; he shall not die. 29 But the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not right.’ Are My ways not right, house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are not right?

30 “Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, each according to his conduct,” declares the Lord God. “(EV)Repent and turn away from all your offenses, so that wrongdoing does not become a stumbling block to you. 31 (EW)Hurl away from you all your offenses which you have committed and make yourselves a (EX)new heart and a new spirit! For why should you die, house of Israel? 32 For I take (EY)no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies,” declares the Lord God. “Therefore, repent and live!”

Song of Mourning for the Leaders of Israel

19 “As for you, take up a (EZ)song of mourning for the (FA)leaders of Israel and say,

[bz]What was your mother?
A lioness among lions!
She lay down among young lions,
She raised her cubs.
When she brought up one of her cubs,
(FB)He became a young lion,
And he learned to tear his prey;
He devoured people.
Then nations heard about him;
He was caught in their trap,
And they (FC)brought him with hooks
To the land of Egypt.
When she saw, as she waited,
That her hope was lost,
She took [ca]another of her cubs
And made (FD)him a young lion.
And he (FE)walked about among the lions,
He became a young lion;
He learned to tear his prey;
He devoured people.
He [cb]destroyed their [cc]palaces
And laid waste their cities;
And the land and its fullness were appalled
Because of the sound of his roaring.
Then (FF)nations set against him
On every side from their provinces,
And they spread their net over him;
He was caught in their trap.
(FG)They put him in a [cd]wooden collar with hooks
And (FH)brought him to the king of Babylon;
They brought him in hunting nets
So that his voice would no longer be heard
On the mountains of Israel.
10 Your mother was (FI)like a vine in your [ce]vineyard,
Planted by the waters;
It was fruitful and thick with branches
Because of abundant waters.
11 And it had [cf](FJ)strong stems fit for scepters of rulers,
And its (FK)height was raised above the clouds
So that it was seen in its height with the mass of its branches.
12 But it was (FL)uprooted in fury;
It was (FM)thrown down to the ground;
And the (FN)east wind dried up its fruit.
[cg]Its (FO)strong stem [ch]was torn out
So that [ci]it withered;
The fire consumed it.
13 And now it is planted in the (FP)wilderness,
In a dry and thirsty land.
14 And (FQ)fire has gone out from its stem;
It has consumed its shoots and fruit,
So that there is no [cj]strong stem in it,
A scepter to rule.’”

This is a song of mourning, and has become a song of mourning.

God’s Dealings with Israel Rehearsed

20 Now in the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth of the month, men from the (FR)elders of Israel came to inquire of the Lord, and they sat before me. Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord [ck]God says: “Do you yourselves come to inquire of Me? As I live,” declares the Lord God, “(FS)I certainly will not be inquired of by you.”’ Will you judge them, will you judge them, son of man? (FT)Make known to them the abominations of their fathers; and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “On the day when I (FU)chose Israel and [cl]swore to the [cm]descendants of the house of Jacob and made Myself known to them in the land of Egypt, when I [cn]swore to them, saying, (FV)I am the Lord your God, on that day I swore to them, (FW)to bring them out from the land of Egypt into a land that I had [co]selected for them, (FX)flowing with milk and honey, which is (FY)the glory of all the lands. And I said to them, ‘(FZ)Throw away, each of you, the detestable things of his eyes, and (GA)do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt; (GB)I am the Lord your God.’ But they (GC)rebelled against Me and were not willing to listen to Me; they did not throw away, each of them, the detestable things of their eyes, nor did they abandon the (GD)idols of Egypt.

“Then I [cp]resolved to (GE)pour out My wrath on them, to [cq]use up My anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt. But I acted (GF)for the sake of My name, that it would (GG)not be defiled in the sight of the nations among whom they lived, in whose sight I made Myself known to them by bringing them out of the land of Egypt. 10 So I took them out of the land of Egypt and brought them into the (GH)wilderness. 11 I gave them My (GI)statutes and informed them of My ordinances, (GJ)which, if [cr]a person [cs]follows them, then he will live by them. 12 Also I gave them My Sabbaths to be a (GK)sign between Me and them, so that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them. 13 But the house of Israel (GL)rebelled against Me in the wilderness. They did not walk in My statutes and they rejected My ordinances, (GM)which, if [ct]a person [cu]follows them, then he will live by them; and they greatly profaned My (GN)Sabbaths. Then I [cv]resolved to (GO)pour out My wrath on them in the wilderness, to annihilate them. 14 But I acted for the sake of My name, so that it would not be defiled before the eyes of the nations, before whose eyes I had brought them out. 15 Also (GP)I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all the lands, 16 because they rejected My ordinances, and as for My statutes, they did not walk in them; they also profaned My Sabbaths, because their (GQ)heart continually followed their idols. 17 Yet My eye spared them rather than destroying them, and I did not bring about their (GR)annihilation in the wilderness.

18 “Instead, I said to their [cw](GS)children in the wilderness, ‘(GT)Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers or keep their ordinances or defile yourselves with their idols. 19 (GU)I am the Lord your God; (GV)walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances and [cx]follow them. 20 (GW)Sanctify My Sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between Me and you, so that you may know that I am the Lord your God.’ 21 But the (GX)children rebelled against Me; they did not walk in My statutes, nor were they careful to [cy]follow My ordinances which, if [cz]a person [da]follows them, then he will live by them; they profaned My Sabbaths. So I [db]resolved to pour out My wrath on them, to [dc]use up My anger against them in the wilderness. 22 But I (GY)withdrew My hand and acted (GZ)for the sake of My name, so that it would not be defiled in the sight of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out. 23 Also I swore to them in the wilderness that I would (HA)scatter them among the nations and disperse them among the lands, 24 because they had not [dd]complied with My ordinances, but had rejected My statutes and had profaned My Sabbaths, and (HB)their eyes were [de]on the idols of their fathers. 25 I also gave them statutes that were (HC)not good, and ordinances by which they could not live; 26 and I pronounced them (HD)unclean because of their gifts, in that they (HE)made all [df]their firstborn pass through the fire so that I might make them desolate, in order that they might (HF)know that I am the Lord.”’

27 “Therefore (HG)speak to the house of Israel, son of man, and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “Again, in this your fathers have (HH)blasphemed Me by (HI)being disloyal to Me. 28 When I had (HJ)brought them into the land which I swore to give to them, then they saw every (HK)high hill and every tree thick with branches, and there they offered their sacrifices and there they presented the provocation of their offering. There also they made their soothing aroma and there they poured out their drink offerings. 29 Then I said to them, ‘What is the high place to which you go?’ So its name is called [dg]Bamah to this day.”’ 30 Therefore, say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “Will you defile yourselves in the way of your (HL)fathers and adulterously pursue their detestable things? 31 And [dh]when you offer your gifts, when you (HM)make your sons pass through the fire, you are defiling yourselves with all your idols to this day. So shall I be inquired of by you, house of Israel? As I live,” declares the Lord God, “I certainly will not be inquired of by you. 32 And whatever (HN)comes [di]into your mind certainly will not come about, when you say: ‘We will be like the nations, like the families of the lands, (HO)serving wood and stone.’

God Will Restore Israel to Her Land

33 “As I live,” declares the Lord God, “with a mighty hand and with an (HP)outstretched arm and with wrath poured out, I assuredly shall be (HQ)king over you. 34 I will (HR)bring you out from the peoples and gather you from the lands where you are scattered, with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm and with (HS)wrath poured out; 35 and I will bring you into the (HT)wilderness of the peoples, and there I will enter into judgment with you face to face. 36 Just as I (HU)entered into judgment with your fathers in the (HV)wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will enter into judgment with you,” declares the Lord God. 37 “I will make you (HW)pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant; 38 and I will (HX)purge from you the rebels and those who revolt against Me; I will bring them out of the land where they reside, but they will (HY)not enter the [dj]land of Israel. So you will know that I am the Lord.

39 “As for you, house of Israel,” this is what the Lord God says: “(HZ)Go, serve, everyone of you his idols; [dk]but later you will certainly listen to Me, and My holy name you will no longer (IA)defile with your gifts and your idols. 40 For on My holy mountain, on the high mountain of Israel,” declares the Lord God, “there the entire house of Israel, (IB)all of them, will serve Me in the land; there I will (IC)accept them and there I will demand your contributions and the choicest of your gifts, with all your holy things. 41 [dl]As a soothing aroma I will accept you when I (ID)bring you out from the peoples and gather you from the lands where you are scattered; and I will show Myself to be (IE)holy among you in the sight of the nations. 42 And (IF)you will know that I am the Lord, (IG)when I bring you into the land of Israel, into the (IH)land which I swore to give to your forefathers. 43 And there you will (II)remember your ways and all your deeds by which you have defiled yourselves; and you will (IJ)loathe yourselves in your own [dm]sight for all the evil things that you have done. 44 Then (IK)you will know that I am the Lord, when I have dealt with you (IL)in behalf of My name, not according to your evil ways or according to your corrupt deeds, house of Israel,” declares the Lord God.’”

45 [dn]Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 46 “Son of man, set your face toward the south, and speak prophetically against the (IM)south and (IN)prophesy against the (IO)forest [do]land of the Negev, 47 and say to the forest of the Negev, ‘Hear the word of the Lord: this is what the Lord God says: “Behold, I am going to (IP)kindle a fire in you, and it will consume every [dp]green tree in you, as well as every dry tree; the blazing flame will not go out and [dq](IQ)the entire surface from south to north will be scorched by it. 48 And all [dr]mankind will see that I, the Lord, have kindled it; it will (IR)not go out.”’” 49 Then I said, “Oh, Lord God! They are saying of me, ‘Is he not just speaking in (IS)riddles?’”

Parable of the Sword of the Lord

21 [ds]And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, (IT)set your face against Jerusalem, and [dt](IU)speak prophetically against the sanctuaries and prophesy against the land of Israel; and say to the land of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Behold, (IV)I am against you; and I will draw My sword from its sheath and cut off from you the (IW)righteous and the wicked. Because I will cut off from you the righteous and the wicked, therefore My sword will go out from its sheath against [du](IX)humanity from south to north. So [dv]humanity will know that I, the Lord, have drawn My sword from its sheath. It will (IY)not return to its sheath again.”’ As for you, son of man, groan with [dw]a breaking heart and bitter grief; you shall groan in their sight. And when they say to you, ‘Why are you groaning?’ you shall say, ‘Because of the (IZ)news, for it is coming; and (JA)every heart will melt, all hands will go limp, every spirit will be disheartened, and all [dx]knees will drip with water. Behold, it is coming and it will happen,’ declares the Lord [dy]God.”

And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Lord says:’ Say,

(JB)A sword, a sword sharpened
And also polished!
10 Sharpened to make a (JC)slaughter,
Polished [dz]to flash like lightning!’

Or shall we rejoice, the [ea]rod of My son (JD)despising every tree? 11 And it is given to be polished, so that it may be handled; the sword is sharpened and polished, to hand it over to the slaughterer. 12 (JE)Cry out and wail, son of man; for it is against My people, it is against all the (JF)officials of Israel. They are turned over to the sword with My people, therefore [eb]slap your thigh. 13 For there is a testing; and what if even the [ec]rod which despises will cease to be?” declares the Lord God.

14 “You therefore, son of man, prophesy and clap your hands; and let the sword be (JG)doubled the third time, the sword for the slain. It is the sword for the great one slain, which surrounds them, 15 so that their (JH)hearts will waver, and many (JI)fall at all their (JJ)gates. I have granted the slaughter of the sword. Oh! It is made for striking like lightning, it is sharpened in readiness for slaughter. 16 Prove yourself sharp, go to the right; set yourself; go to the left, wherever your [ed]edge is ordered. 17 I will also clap My hands, and I will (JK)satisfy My wrath; I, the Lord, have spoken.”

The Instrument of God’s Judgment

18 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 19 “Now as for you, son of man, [ee](JL)make two ways for the sword of the king of Babylon to come; both of them will go out of one land. And [ef]make a signpost; [eg]make it at the head of the way to the city. 20 You shall [eh]mark a way for the sword to come to (JM)Rabbah of the sons of Ammon, and to Judah into (JN)fortified Jerusalem. 21 For the king of Babylon stands at the [ei]parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use (JO)divination; he (JP)shakes the arrows, he consults the [ej](JQ)household idols, he looks at the liver. 22 Into his right hand came the divination, ‘Jerusalem,’ to (JR)set up battering rams, to open the mouth [ek]for [el]slaughter, to raise the voice with a battle cry, to set up battering rams against the gates, to pile up assault ramps, to build a siege wall. 23 And it will be to them like a false divination in their eyes; (JS)they have sworn solemn oaths. But he (JT)makes guilt known, so that they may be seized.

24 “Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: ‘Because you have made your guilt known, in that your offenses are uncovered, so that in all your deeds your sins are seen—because you have come to mind, you will be seized by the hand. 25 And you, slain, wicked one, the prince of Israel, whose (JU)day has come, in the time of the [em]punishment of the end,’ 26 this is what the Lord God says: ‘Remove the [en]turban and take off the (JV)crown; this will [eo]no longer be the same. (JW)Exalt that which is low, and humble that which is high. 27 (JX)Ruins, ruins, ruins, I will make it! This also will be no longer until (JY)He comes whose right it is, and I will give it to Him.’

28 “And you, son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Lord God says concerning the sons of Ammon and their (JZ)taunting,’ and say: ‘A sword, a sword is drawn, sharpened for the slaughter, to make it [ep](KA)consume, so that it may be like lightning— 29 while they see (KB)false visions for you, while they divine lies for you—to place you on the necks of the wicked who are killed, whose day has come, in the (KC)time of the [eq]punishment of the end. 30 (KD)Return it to its sheath. In the (KE)place where you were created, in the land of your origin, I will judge you. 31 I will (KF)pour out My indignation on you; I will (KG)blow on you with the fire of My wrath, and I will hand you over to brutal men, (KH)craftsmen of destruction. 32 You will be [er](KI)fuel for the fire; your blood will be in the midst of the land. You will (KJ)not be remembered, for I, the Lord, have spoken.’”

The Sins of Israel

22 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “And you, son of man, will you judge, will you judge the bloody city? Then inform her of all her abominations. And you shall say, ‘This is what the Lord [es]God says: “A city (KK)shedding blood in her midst, so that her time is coming; and a city that makes idols, contrary to her own good, for defilement! You have become (KL)guilty by [et]the blood which you have shed, and you have become defiled by your idols which you have made. So you have brought your days closer and have come to your years; therefore I have made you a (KM)disgrace to the nations, and an object of mocking to all the lands. Those who are near and those who are far from you will make fun of you, you of ill repute, full of (KN)turmoil.

“Behold, the (KO)rulers of Israel, each according to his [eu]power, have been among you for the purpose of shedding blood. They have (KP)treated father and mother with contempt among you. They have oppressed the (KQ)stranger in your midst; they have oppressed the (KR)orphan and the widow among you. You have (KS)despised My holy things and (KT)profaned My Sabbaths. Slanderous men have been among you for the purpose of shedding blood, and among you they have eaten at the mountain shrines. In your midst they have (KU)committed outrageous sin. 10 Among you [ev]they have (KV)uncovered their fathers’ nakedness; among you they have abused her who was (KW)unclean in her menstruation. 11 And one has committed abomination with his (KX)neighbor’s wife, another has outrageously defiled his (KY)daughter-in-law, and another among you has sexually (KZ)abused his sister, his father’s daughter. 12 Among you they have (LA)taken bribes to shed blood; you have taken [ew](LB)interest, you have injured your neighbors by (LC)oppression, and you have (LD)forgotten Me,” declares the Lord God.

13 “Behold, then, I strike with My hand your (LE)profit which you have made and [ex]the bloodshed which is among you. 14 Can (LF)your heart endure, or can your hands be strong for the days that I will deal with you? (LG)I, the Lord, have spoken and will act. 15 And I will (LH)scatter you among the nations and disperse you among the lands, and I will (LI)eliminate your uncleanness from you. 16 Then you will defile yourself in the sight of the nations, and you will (LJ)know that I am the Lord.”’”

17 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 18 “Son of man, the house of Israel has become [ey](LK)waste metal to Me; all of them are (LL)bronze, tin, iron, and lead in the (LM)smelting furnace; they are the [ez]waste metal of silver. 19 Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: ‘Because all of you have become [fa]waste metal, therefore, behold, I am going to gather you into the midst of Jerusalem. 20 As they gather silver, bronze, iron, lead, and tin into the (LN)smelting furnace to blow fire on it in order to melt it, so I will gather you in My anger and in My wrath, and I will place you there and melt you. 21 And I will gather you and blow on you with the fire of My wrath, and you will be melted in the midst of it. 22 As silver is melted in the furnace, so you will be melted in the midst of it; and you will know that I, the Lord, have (LO)poured out My wrath on you.’”

23 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 24 “Son of man, say to her, ‘You are a land that is (LP)not clean or rained on in the day of indignation.’ 25 There is a (LQ)conspiracy of her prophets in her midst like a roaring lion tearing the prey. They have (LR)devoured lives; they have taken treasure and precious things; they have made many (LS)widows in the midst of her. 26 Her (LT)priests have done violence to My Law and have (LU)profaned My holy things; they have made no (LV)distinction between the holy and the [fb]common, and they have not taught the difference between the (LW)unclean and the clean; and they have closed their eyes from My Sabbaths, and I am defiled among them. 27 Her leaders within her are like wolves tearing the prey, by shedding blood and (LX)destroying lives in order to make (LY)dishonest profit. 28 And her prophets have coated with whitewash for them, seeing (LZ)false visions and divining lies for them, saying, ‘This is what the Lord God says,’ when the Lord has not spoken. 29 The people of the land have practiced (MA)extortion and committed robbery, and they have oppressed the poor and needy, and have (MB)oppressed the stranger without justice. 30 I (MC)searched for a man among them who would (MD)build up a wall and (ME)stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found [fc]no one. 31 So I have poured out My (MF)indignation on them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; I have brought (MG)their way upon their heads,” declares the Lord God.

Oholah and Oholibah’s Sin and Its Consequences

23 The word of the Lord came to me again, saying, “Son of man, there were (MH)two women, the daughters of one mother; and they prostituted themselves in Egypt. They (MI)prostituted themselves in their youth; there their breasts were squeezed and there their virgin breasts were handled. Their names were Oholah the elder and Oholibah her sister. And they became Mine, and they gave birth to sons and daughters. And as for their names, Samaria is Oholah and Jerusalem is Oholibah.

“Oholah prostituted herself [fd]while she was Mine; and she lusted after her lovers, after the (MJ)Assyrians, her neighbors, who were clothed in purple, (MK)governors and officials, all of them handsome young men, horsemen riding on horses. She bestowed her [fe]obscene practices on them, all of whom were the choicest [ff]men of Assyria; and with all whom she lusted after, with all their idols she (ML)defiled herself. She did not abandon her obscene practices (MM)from the time in Egypt; for in her youth [fg]men had slept with her, and they handled her virgin breasts and poured out their obscene practice on her. Therefore, I handed her over to her (MN)lovers, to the [fh]Assyrians, after whom she lusted. 10 They (MO)uncovered her nakedness; they took her sons and her daughters, but they killed her with the sword. So she became a [fi]subject of gossip among women, and they executed judgments on her.

11 “Now her sister Oholibah saw this, yet she was (MP)more corrupt in her lust than she, and her obscene practices were [fj]more than the prostitution of her sister. 12 She lusted after the [fk](MQ)Assyrians, governors and officials, the ones near, opulently dressed, horsemen riding on horses, all of them handsome young men. 13 And I saw that she had defiled herself; they both took [fl]the same way. 14 So she increased her obscene practices. And she saw men (MR)carved on the wall, images of the (MS)Chaldeans drawn in bright red, 15 wearing belts around their waists, with flowing turbans on their heads, all of them looking like officers, [fm]like the [fn]Babylonians in Chaldea, the land of their birth. 16 And [fo]when she saw them she (MT)lusted after them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea. 17 And the [fp](MU)Babylonians came to her to the bed of love and defiled her with their obscene practice. And when she had been defiled by them, [fq]she turned away from them in disgust. 18 She (MV)exposed her obscene practices and exposed her nakedness; then [fr]I turned away from her in (MW)disgust, just as [fs]I had turned away from her (MX)sister in disgust. 19 Yet she multiplied her obscene practices, remembering the days of her youth, when she prostituted herself in the land of Egypt. 20 She (MY)lusted after their lovers, whose flesh is like the flesh of donkeys and whose discharge is like the discharge of horses. 21 So you longed for the (MZ)outrageous sin of your youth, when [ft]the Egyptians handled your breasts because of the breasts of your youth.

22 “Therefore, Oholibah, this is what the Lord [fu]God says: ‘Behold I am going to incite your lovers against you, from whom [fv]you turned away in disgust, and I will bring them against you from every side: 23 the [fw](NA)Babylonians and all the (NB)Chaldeans, (NC)Pekod and Shoa and Koa, and all the [fx](ND)Assyrians with them; handsome young men, governors and officials all of them, officers and [fy]men of renown, all of them riding on horses. 24 And they will come against you with weapons, (NE)chariots, and [fz]wagons, and with a contingent of peoples. They will attack you on every side with shield, [ga]buckler, and helmet; and I will commit the (NF)judgment to them, and they will judge you according to their customs. 25 I will set My (NG)jealousy against you, so that they may deal with you in wrath. They will remove your nose and your ears; and your [gb]survivors will fall by the sword. They will take your (NH)sons and your daughters; and your [gc]survivors will be consumed by the fire. 26 They will also (NI)strip you of your clothes and take away your (NJ)beautiful jewelry. 27 So (NK)I will remove from you your outrageous sin and your prostitution that you brought from the land of Egypt, so that you will not raise your eyes to them or remember Egypt anymore.’ 28 For this is what the Lord God says: ‘Behold, I am going to hand you over to those whom you (NL)hate, to those from whom [gd]you turned away in disgust. 29 They will (NM)deal with you in hatred, take all your property, and leave you naked and bare. And the nakedness of your prostitution will be exposed, both your outrageous sin and your obscene practices. 30 These things will be done to you because you have (NN)adulterously pursued the nations, because you have defiled yourself with their idols. 31 You have walked in the way of your sister; therefore I will put (NO)her cup in your hand.’ 32 This is what the Lord God says:

‘You will (NP)drink your sister’s cup,
Which is deep and wide.
[ge]You will be (NQ)laughed at and held in derision;
Because it contains much.
33 You will be filled with (NR)drunkenness and grief,
A cup of horror and desolation,
The cup of your sister Samaria.
34 And you will (NS)drink it and drain it.
Then you will gnaw on its fragments
And tear your breasts;

for I have spoken,’ declares the Lord God. 35 Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: ‘Because you have (NT)forgotten Me and (NU)discarded Me behind your back, suffer on your own part the punishment for your outrageous sin and your obscene practices.’”

36 Moreover, the Lord said to me, “Son of man, will you (NV)judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then (NW)declare to them their abominations. 37 For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands. So they have committed adultery with their idols, and even made their sons, (NX)whom they bore to Me, pass through the fire to [gf]them as food. 38 Again, they have done this to Me: they have (NY)defiled My sanctuary on the same day, and have (NZ)profaned My Sabbaths. 39 For when they slaughtered their children for their idols, they entered My (OA)sanctuary on the same day to profane it; and behold, this is what they did within My house.

40 “Furthermore, [gg]they have even sent for men who come from a great distance, to whom a messenger was sent; and behold, they came—for whom you bathed, (OB)put makeup on your eyes, and (OC)adorned yourselves with jewelry; 41 and you sat on a splendid (OD)couch with a (OE)table arranged in front of it on which you had set My (OF)incense and My (OG)oil. 42 And the sound of a [gh](OH)carefree multitude was with her; and (OI)heavy drinkers were brought from the wilderness with people from the multitude of humanity. And they put (OJ)bracelets on [gi]the wrists of the women and beautiful crowns on their heads.

43 “Then I said concerning her who was (OK)worn out by adulteries, ‘[gj]Will they now commit adultery with her when she is like this?’ 44 [gk]But they went in to her as they would go in to a prostitute. This is how they went in to Oholah and to Oholibah, the lewd women. 45 But they, righteous people, will (OL)judge them with the judgment of adulteresses and with the judgment of women who shed blood, because they are adulteresses and blood is on their hands.

46 “For this is what the Lord God says: ‘Bring up a contingent against them and turn them over to (OM)terror and plunder. 47 The contingent will (ON)stone them with stones and cut them down with their swords; they will kill their sons and their daughters and (OO)burn their houses with fire. 48 So I will eliminate outrageous conduct from the land, so that all women will take warning and not commit [gl]outrageous sin as you have done. 49 Your outrageous conduct [gm]will be (OP)repaid to you, and you will bear the guilt for your idols; so you will know that I am the Lord God.’”

Parable of the Boiling Pot

24 Now the word of the Lord came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth of the month, saying, “Son of man, write the name of the day, this very day. The king of Babylon [gn]has (OQ)laid siege to Jerusalem this very day. Present a (OR)parable to the (OS)rebellious house and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord [go]God says:

“Put on the (OT)pot, put it on and also pour water into it;
[gp](OU)Put in it the pieces of meat,
Every good piece, the thigh and the shoulder;
Fill it with choice bones.
Take the (OV)choicest of the flock,
And also stack [gq]wood under [gr]the pot.
Make it boil vigorously.
Also boil its bones in it.”

‘Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:

“Woe to the (OW)bloody city,
To the pot in which there is rust
And whose rust has not gone out of it!
Take out of it piece after piece,
[gs]Without making a choice.
For her blood is in her midst;
She placed it on the bare rock;
She did not (OX)pour it on the ground
To cover it with dust.
So that it may (OY)cause wrath to come up to take vengeance,
I have put her blood on the bare rock,
So that it will not be covered.”

Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:

(OZ)Woe to the bloody city!
I also will make the wood pile great.
10 Heap on the wood, kindle the fire,
[gt]Cook the meat thoroughly
And mix in the spices,
And let the bones be burned up.
11 Then (PA)set it empty on its burning coals
So that it may be hot
And its bronze may [gu]glow,
And its (PB)filthiness may be melted in it,
Its rust eliminated.
12 She has (PC)wearied Me with work,
Yet her great rust has not gone from her;
Let her rust be in the fire!
13 In your filthiness is outrageous sin.
Because I would have cleansed you,
Yet you are (PD)not clean,
You will not be cleansed from your filthiness again
Until I have [gv](PE)expended My wrath on you.

14 I, the Lord, have spoken; it is (PF)coming and I will act. I will not overlook, I will not (PG)pity, and I will not be sorry; (PH)according to your ways and according to your deeds [gw]I will judge you,” declares the Lord God.’”

Death of Ezekiel’s Wife Is a Sign

15 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 16 “Son of man, behold, I am about to take from you (PI)what is precious to your eyes with a (PJ)fatal blow; but you shall not (PK)mourn and you shall not weep, and your (PL)tears shall not come. 17 Groan silently; do (PM)no mourning for the dead. Bind on your turban and put your sandals on your feet, and do not [gx]cover your mustache, and (PN)do not eat the [gy]bread of other people.” 18 So I spoke to the people in the morning, and in the evening my wife died. And in the morning I did as I was commanded. 19 And the people said to me, “Will you not tell us what these things mean for us, that you are doing?” 20 Then I said to them, “The word of the Lord came to me, saying, 21 ‘Speak to the house of Israel, “This is what the Lord God says: ‘Behold, I am about to profane My sanctuary, the pride of your power, (PO)that which is precious in your eyes and the longing of your soul; and your (PP)sons and your daughters whom you have left behind will fall by the sword. 22 And you will do just as I have done; you will not [gz]cover your mustache, and you will not eat the [ha]bread of other people. 23 Your turbans will be on your heads, and your sandals on your feet. You (PQ)will not mourn and you will not weep; but (PR)you will rot away in your guilty deeds, and you will groan [hb]to one another. 24 So Ezekiel will be a (PS)sign to you; according to all that he has done, you will do. When it comes, then you will know that I am the Lord God.’”

25 ‘As for you, son of man, will it not be on the day when I take from them their (PT)stronghold, the joy of their splendor, that which is precious in their eyes and their [hc]heart’s longing, their sons and their daughters, 26 that on that day the one who (PU)escapes will come to you with information for your ears? 27 On that day your (PV)mouth will be opened to him who escaped, and you will speak and no longer be silenced. So you will be a sign to them, and they will know that I am the Lord.’”

Judgment on Gentile Nations—Ammon

25 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, set your face against the (PW)sons of Ammon and prophesy against them, and say to the sons of Ammon, ‘Hear the word of the Lord [hd]God! This is what the Lord God says: “Because you said, ‘(PX)Aha!’ against My sanctuary when it was profaned, and against the land of Israel when it was made desolate, and against the house of Judah when they went into exile, therefore, behold, I am going to give you to the [he](PY)people of the east as a possession, and they will set up their encampments among you and make their dwellings among you; they will (PZ)eat your fruit and drink your milk. I will make (QA)Rabbah a pasture for camels, and the sons of Ammon a resting place for flocks. Then you will know that I am the Lord.” For this is what the Lord God says: “Because you have (QB)clapped your hands and stamped your feet, and have (QC)rejoiced with all the malice in your soul against the land of Israel, therefore, behold, I have (QD)reached out with My hand against you and I will give you as (QE)plunder to the nations. And I will (QF)cut you off from the peoples and (QG)eliminate you from the lands. I will exterminate you. So you will (QH)know that I am the Lord.”

Moab

‘The Lord God says this: “Because (QI)Moab and Seir say, ‘Behold, the house of Judah is like all the nations,’ therefore, behold, I am going to [hf]deprive the flank of Moab of its cities, of its cities [hg]which are on its frontiers, the glory of the land, (QJ)Beth-jeshimoth, (QK)Baal-meon, and (QL)Kiriathaim; 10 and I will give it as a possession along with the sons of Ammon to the [hh](QM)people of the east, so that the sons of Ammon will not be remembered among the nations. 11 So I will execute judgments on Moab, and they will know that I am the Lord.”

Edom

12 ‘The Lord God says this: “Because (QN)Edom has acted against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has incurred great guilt, and avenged themselves upon them,” 13 therefore this is what the Lord God says: “I will also (QO)reach out with My hand against Edom and (QP)eliminate human and animal life from it. And I will turn it into ruins; from (QQ)Teman even to (QR)Dedan they will fall by the sword. 14 And (QS)I will inflict My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel. Therefore, they will act in Edom (QT)in accordance with My anger and My wrath; so they will know My vengeance,” declares the Lord God.

Philistia

15 ‘This is what the Lord God says: “Because the Philistines have acted in (QU)revenge, and have taken vengeance with malice in their souls to destroy with everlasting hostility,” 16 therefore this is what the Lord God says: “Behold, I am going to (QV)reach out with My hand against the Philistines and eliminate the (QW)Cherethites; and I will destroy the remnant of the seacoast. 17 I will execute great vengeance on them with wrathful rebukes; and they will (QX)know that I am the Lord, when I inflict My vengeance on them.”’”

Judgment on Tyre

26 Now in the eleventh year, on the first of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, because (QY)Tyre has said in regard to Jerusalem, ‘Aha! The (QZ)gateway of the peoples is broken; it has [hi](RA)opened to me. I shall be filled, now that she is laid waste,’ therefore this is what the Lord [hj]God says: ‘Behold, I am against you, Tyre, and I will bring up (RB)many nations against you, as the (RC)sea brings up its waves. They will (RD)destroy the walls of Tyre and tear down her towers; and I will sweep her debris away from her and make her a bare rock. She will become a dry place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea, for I have spoken,’ declares the Lord God; ‘and she will become (RE)plunder for the nations. Also her (RF)daughters who are [hk]on the mainland will be killed by the sword, and they will know that I am the Lord.’”

For the Lord God says this: “Behold, I am going to bring upon Tyre from the north Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, (RG)king of kings, with horses, (RH)chariots, cavalry, and [hl]a great army. He will kill your daughters [hm]on the mainland with the sword; and he will make (RI)siege walls against you, pile up an (RJ)assault ramp against you, and raise up a large shield against you. And he will direct the blow of his battering rams against your walls, and he will tear down your towers with his [hn]axes. 10 Because of the multitude of his (RK)horses, the dust raised by them will cover you; your walls will (RL)shake from the noise of cavalry, [ho]wagons, and chariots when he (RM)enters your gates as warriors enter a city that is breached. 11 With the hoofs of his (RN)horses he will trample all your streets. He will kill your people with the sword, and your strong [hp]pillars will (RO)go down to the ground. 12 Also they will take your riches as spoils and plunder your (RP)merchandise, (RQ)tear down your walls and destroy your (RR)delightful houses, and [hq]throw your stones, your timbers, and your debris (RS)into the water. 13 So I will put an end to the sound of your (RT)songs, and the sound of your (RU)harps will no longer be heard. 14 I will turn you into a bare rock; you will become a dry place for the spreading of nets. You will not be (RV)rebuilt, for I the (RW)Lord have spoken,” declares the Lord God.

15 The Lord God says this to Tyre: “Will the (RX)coastlands not (RY)shake from the sound of your downfall when the wounded groan, when the slaughter takes place in your midst? 16 Then all the princes of the sea will (RZ)descend from their thrones, remove their robes, and strip off their colorfully woven garments. They will (SA)clothe themselves with [hr]trembling; they will sit on the ground, (SB)tremble again and again, and be appalled at you. 17 And they will take up a (SC)song of mourning over you and say to you,

(SD)How you have perished, you inhabited one,
From the seas, you famous city,
Which was (SE)mighty on the sea,
She and her inhabitants,
Who imposed [hs]her terror
On all her inhabitants!
18 Now the (SF)coastlands will tremble
On the day of your downfall;
Yes, the coastlands which are by the sea
Will be horrified at your (SG)passing.’”

19 For this is what the Lord God says: “When I make you a desolate city, like the cities which are not inhabited, when I (SH)bring up the deep over you and the great waters cover you, 20 then I will bring you down with those who (SI)go down to the pit, to the people of old, and I will make you remain in the (SJ)lower parts of the earth, like the ancient ruins, with those who go down to the pit, so that you will not [ht]be inhabited; but I will put (SK)glory in the land of the living. 21 I will [hu]cause you (SL)sudden terrors and you will no longer exist; though you will be sought, (SM)you will never be found again,” declares the Lord God.

Grief over Tyre

27 Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “And you, son of man, (SN)take up a song of mourning over Tyre; and say to Tyre, (SO)who sits at the [hv]entrance to the sea, (SP)merchant of the peoples to many coastlands, ‘This is what the Lord [hw]God says:

“Tyre, you have said, ‘I am perfect in beauty.’
Your borders are in the heart of the seas;
Your builders have perfected your beauty.
They have [hx]made all your planks of juniper trees from (SQ)Senir;
They have taken a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you.
Of (SR)oaks from (SS)Bashan they have made your rudders;
With ivory they have [hy]inlaid your deck of boxwood from the coastlands of (ST)Cyprus.
Your sail was of colorfully embroidered linen from Egypt
So that it became your flag;
Your [hz]awning was (SU)violet and purple from the coastlands of (SV)Elishah.
The inhabitants of Sidon and (SW)Arvad were your rowers;
Your (SX)wise men, Tyre, were [ia]aboard; they were your sailors.
The elders of (SY)Gebal and her wise men were with you repairing your leaks;
All the ships of the sea and their sailors were with you in order to deal in your merchandise.

10 (SZ)Persia, (TA)Lud, and (TB)Put were in your army, your men of war. They hung up shield and helmet on you; they presented your splendor. 11 The sons of Arvad and your army were on your walls, all around, and the [ib]Gammadim were in your towers. They hung their shields on your walls all around; they perfected your beauty.

12 “Tarshish was your customer because of the abundance of all kinds of wealth; with silver, iron, tin, and lead they paid for your merchandise. 13 (TC)Javan, (TD)Tubal, and (TE)Meshech, they were your traders; with human (TF)lives and vessels of bronze they paid for your merchandise. 14 Those from (TG)Beth-togarmah gave horses, war horses, and mules for your merchandise. 15 The sons of (TH)Dedan were your traders. Many coastlands were [ic]your market; they brought (TI)ivory tusks and ebony as your payment. 16 (TJ)Aram was your customer because of the abundance of your [id]goods; they paid for your merchandise with [ie](TK)emeralds, purple, (TL)colorfully woven cloth, fine linen, coral, and rubies. 17 Judah and the land of Israel, they were your traders; with the wheat of (TM)Minnith, [if]cakes, honey, oil, and balsam they paid for your merchandise. 18 (TN)Damascus was your customer because of the abundance of your [ig]goods, because of the abundance of all kinds of wealth, because of the wine of Helbon and white wool. 19 Vedan and Javan paid for your merchandise from Uzal; wrought iron, cassia, and spice reed were among your merchandise. 20 (TO)Dedan traded with you in saddlecloths for riding. 21 (TP)Arabia and all the princes of Kedar, they were [ih]your customers for (TQ)lambs, rams, and goats; for these they were your customers. 22 The traders of (TR)Sheba and Raamah, they traded with you; they paid for your merchandise with the best of all (TS)balsam oil, and with all kinds of precious stones, and gold. 23 Haran, Canneh, (TT)Eden, the traders of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad traded with you. 24 They traded with you in choice garments, in clothes of violet and colorfully woven cloth, and in blankets of two colors, and tightly wound cords, which were among your merchandise. 25 The (TU)ships of Tarshish were [ii]the carriers for your merchandise.

And you were filled and were very [ij]glorious
In the heart of the seas.

26 “Your rowers have brought you
Into (TV)great waters;
The (TW)east wind has broken you
In the heart of the seas.
27 Your wealth, your wares, your merchandise,
Your seamen and your sailors,
Your repairers of leaks, your dealers in merchandise,
And all your men of war who are in you,
With all your contingent that is in your midst,
Will fall into the heart of the seas
On the day of your overthrow.
28 At the sound of the cry of your sailors,
The pasture lands will (TX)shake.
29 All who handle the oar,
The (TY)seamen and all the sailors of the sea
Will come down from their ships;
They will stand on the land,
30 And they will (TZ)make their voice heard over you
And cry out bitterly.
They will (UA)throw dust on their heads,
They will (UB)wallow in ashes.
31 Also they will shave themselves (UC)bald for you
And (UD)put on sackcloth;
And they will (UE)weep for you in bitterness of soul
With bitter mourning.
32 Moreover, in their wailing they will take up a (UF)song of mourning for you
And sing a song of mourning over you:
‘Who is like Tyre,
Like her who is silent in the midst of the sea?
33 When your merchandise went out from the seas,
You satisfied many peoples;
With the (UG)abundance of your wealth and your merchandise
You enriched the kings of the earth.
34 [ik]Now that you are (UH)broken by the seas
In the depths of the waters,
Your (UI)merchandise and all your company
Have fallen in the midst of you.
35 All the (UJ)inhabitants of the coastlands
Are appalled at you,
And their kings are horribly afraid;
They [il]have a troubled look.
36 The merchants among the peoples (UK)hiss at you;
You have become [im]terrified
And you (UL)will cease to be forever.’”’”

Tyre’s King Overthrown

28 The word of the Lord came again to me, saying, “Son of man, say to the [in]leader of Tyre, ‘The Lord [io]God says this:

“Because your heart is haughty
And you have said, ‘(UM)I am a god,
I sit in the seat of [ip]gods
In the heart of the seas’;
Yet you are a (UN)mortal and not God,
Although you make your heart like the heart of God—
Behold, you are wiser than (UO)Daniel;
There is no secret that is a match for you!
By your wisdom and understanding
You have acquired (UP)riches for yourself
And have acquired gold and silver for your treasuries.
By your great wisdom, by your (UQ)trade
You have increased your riches,
And your (UR)heart is haughty because of your riches—

Therefore this is what the Lord God says:

‘Because you have (US)made your heart
Like the heart of God,
Therefore, behold, I am going to bring (UT)strangers against you,
The (UU)most ruthless of the nations.
And they will draw their swords
Against the beauty of your wisdom
And profane your splendor.
They will bring you down to the pit,
And you will die the (UV)death of those who are killed
In the heart of the seas.
Will you still say, “I am a god,”
In the presence of one who kills you,
Though you are a mortal and not God,
In the hands of those who wound you?
10 You will die the death of the (UW)uncircumcised
By the hand of strangers,
For I have spoken!’ declares the Lord God!”’”

11 Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 12 “Son of man, (UX)take up a song of mourning over the king of Tyre and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“You [iq]had the seal of [ir]perfection,
Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in (UY)Eden, the garden of God;
(UZ)Every precious stone was your covering:
The (VA)ruby, the topaz and the diamond;
The beryl, the onyx and the jasper;
The lapis lazuli, the turquoise and the emerald;
And the gold, the workmanship of your [is](VB)settings and [it]sockets,
Was in you.
On the day that you were created
They were prepared.
14 You were the (VC)anointed cherub who [iu]covers,
And I placed you there.
You were on the holy (VD)mountain of God;
You walked in the midst of the (VE)stones of fire.
15 You were (VF)blameless in your ways
From the day you were created
Until (VG)unrighteousness was found in you.
16 By the (VH)abundance of your trade
[iv]You were internally (VI)filled with violence,
And you sinned;
Therefore I have cast you as profane
From the mountain of God.
And I have destroyed you, you [iw]covering cherub,
From the midst of the stones of fire.
17 Your heart was haughty because of your (VJ)beauty;
You (VK)corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor.
I threw you to the ground;
I put you before (VL)kings,
That they may see you.
18 By the multitude of your wrongdoings,
In the unrighteousness of your trade
You profaned your sanctuaries.
Therefore I have brought (VM)fire from the midst of you;
It has consumed you,
And I have turned you to (VN)ashes on the earth
In the eyes of all who see you.
19 All who know you among the peoples
Are appalled at you;
You have become [ix](VO)terrified
And you will cease to be (VP)forever.”’”

Judgment of Sidon

20 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 21 “Son of man, (VQ)set your face toward (VR)Sidon, prophesy against her 22 and say, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“Behold, I am against you, Sidon,
And I will appear in My glory in your midst.
Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I (VS)execute judgments against her,
And I will reveal Myself as holy in her.
23 For (VT)I will send a plague to her
And blood to her streets,
And the (VU)wounded will [iy]fall in her midst
By the sword upon her on every side;
Then they will know that I am the Lord.

24 And there will no longer be for the house of Israel a (VV)painful thorn or a hurtful thorn bush from any surrounding them who despised them; then they will know that I am the Lord God.”

Israel Regathered

25 ‘This is what the Lord God says: “When I (VW)gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and show Myself holy among them in the sight of the nations, then they will (VX)live on their land which I gave to My servant Jacob. 26 They will (VY)live on it securely; and they will (VZ)build houses, plant vineyards, and live securely when I (WA)execute judgments upon all around them who despise them. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.”’”

Judgment of Egypt

29 In the (WB)tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, set your face against (WC)Pharaoh king of Egypt, and prophesy against him and against all (WD)Egypt. Speak and say, ‘This is what the Lord [iz]God says:

“Behold, I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt,
The great [ja](WE)monster that lies in the midst of his [jb]canals,
That (WF)has said, ‘My Nile is mine, and I myself have made it.’
I will put (WG)hooks in your jaws
And make the fish of your [jc]canals cling to your scales.
And I will bring you up out of the midst of your [jd]canals,
And all the fish of your [je]canals will cling to your scales.
I will (WH)abandon you to the wilderness, you and all the fish of your [jf]canals;
You will fall on the [jg]open field; you will not be brought together or [jh](WI)gathered.
I have given you for (WJ)food to the animals of the earth and to the birds of the sky.
Then all the inhabitants of Egypt will know that I am the Lord,
Because they have been only a (WK)staff made of reed to the house of Israel.
When they took hold of you with the hand,
You (WL)broke and tore all their [ji]hands;
And when they leaned on you,
You broke and made all their hips [jj]shake.”

‘Therefore the Lord God says this: “Behold, I am going to (WM)bring upon you a sword, and I will cut off from you human and animal life. The (WN)land of Egypt will become a desolation and place of ruins. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

“Because [jk]you (WO)said, ‘The Nile is mine, and I have made it,’ 10 therefore, behold, I am (WP)against you and against your [jl]canals, and I will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation, from Migdol to Syene and as far as the border of [jm]Cush. 11 A human foot will (WQ)not pass through it, nor will the foot of an animal pass through it, and it will not be inhabited for forty years. 12 So I will make the land of Egypt a desolation in the (WR)midst of deserted lands. And her cities, in the midst of cities that are laid waste, will be desolate for forty years; and I will (WS)scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands.”

13 ‘For this is what the Lord God says: “At the end of forty years I will (WT)gather the Egyptians from the peoples [jn]among whom they were scattered. 14 And I will restore the fortunes of Egypt and bring them back to the land of (WU)Pathros, to the land of their origin, and there they will be a lowly kingdom. 15 It will be the (WV)lowest of the kingdoms, and it will not raise itself above the nations again. And I will make them small so that they will not (WW)rule over the nations. 16 And it will no longer be a kingdom on which (WX)the house of Israel relies, [jo](WY)bringing to mind the guilt of their having turned [jp]to Egypt. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.”’”

17 Now in the (WZ)twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 18 “Son of man, (XA)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made his army labor [jq]hard against Tyre; every head [jr]had a (XB)bald spot and every shoulder was rubbed raw. But he and his army acquired no wages from Tyre for the labor that he had [js]performed against it.” 19 Therefore this is what the Lord God says: “Behold, I am going to (XC)give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. And he will carry off her (XD)wealth and capture her spoils and seize her plunder; and it will be wages for his army. 20 I have given him the land of Egypt for his labor which he [jt](XE)performed, because they acted for Me,” declares the Lord God.

21 “On that day I will make a (XF)horn sprout for the house of Israel, and I will [ju](XG)open your mouth among them. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Grief over Egypt

30 The word of the Lord came again to me, saying, “Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Lord [jv]God says:

(XH)Wail, ‘Woe for the day!’
For the day is near,
Indeed, (XI)the day of the Lord is near;
It will be a day of (XJ)clouds,
A time of doom for the nations.
A sword will come upon Egypt,
And there will be trembling in [jw]Cush;
When the slain fall in Egypt,
They will (XK)take away her [jx]wealth,
And her foundations will be torn down.

[jy]Cush, Put, Lud, all [jz](XL)Arabia, [ka]Libya and the [kb]people of the land [kc]that is in league will fall with them by the sword.”

‘This is what the Lord says:
“Indeed, those who support (XM)Egypt will fall
And the pride of her power will come down;
From Migdol to Syene
They will fall within her by the sword,”
Declares the Lord God.
“They will be desolate
In the (XN)midst of the desolated lands;
And her cities will be
In the midst of the devastated cities.
And they will (XO)know that I am the Lord,
When I set a (XP)fire in Egypt
And all her helpers are broken.

On that day (XQ)messengers will go out from Me in ships to frighten (XR)carefree [kd]Cush; and (XS)trembling will come on them as on the day of Egypt; for behold, it is coming!”

10 ‘This is what the Lord God says:

(XT)I will also make the [ke]hordes of Egypt cease
By the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
11 He and his people with him,
(XU)The most ruthless of the nations,
Will be brought in to destroy the land;
And they will draw their swords against Egypt
And fill the land with the slain.
12 Moreover, I will make the (XV)Nile canals dry
And (XW)sell the land into the hands of evil men.
And I will make the land desolate
And [kf]all that is in it,
By the hand of strangers; I the Lord have spoken.”

13 ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“I will also (XX)destroy the idols
And make the [kg]images cease from [kh](XY)Memphis.
And there will no longer be a prince in the land of Egypt;
And I will put fear in the land of Egypt.
14 I will make (XZ)Pathros desolate,
Set a fire in (YA)Zoan
And execute judgments on [ki](YB)Thebes.
15 I will pour out My wrath on [kj]Sin,
The stronghold of Egypt;
I will also eliminate the hordes of [kk]Thebes.
16 I will set a fire in Egypt;
[kl]Sin will writhe in anguish,
[km]Thebes will be breached
And [kn]Memphis will have [ko]distresses daily.
17 The young men of [kp](YC)On and of Pi-beseth
Will fall by the sword,
And [kq]the women will go into captivity.
18 In (YD)Tehaphnehes the day will [kr]be (YE)dark
When I (YF)break there the yoke bars of Egypt.
Then the pride of her power will cease in her;
A cloud will cover her,
And her daughters will go into captivity.
19 So I will (YG)execute judgments on Egypt,
And they will know that I am the Lord.”’”

Victory for Babylon

20 In the (YH)eleventh year, in the first month, on the seventh of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 21 “Son of man, I have (YI)broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and, behold, it has not been (YJ)bound up [ks]for healing [kt]or wrapped with a bandage, so that it may be strong to wield the sword. 22 Therefore this is what the Lord God says: ‘Behold, I am (YK)against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and I will break his arms, both the strong and the (YL)broken; and I will make the sword (YM)fall from his hand. 23 And I will (YN)scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands. 24 For I will (YO)strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and put (YP)My sword in his hand; and I will break the arms of Pharaoh, so that he will groan before him with the groans of a wounded man. 25 So I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh will fail. Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I put My sword into the hand of the king of Babylon and he (YQ)reaches out with it against the land of Egypt. 26 When I scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands, then they will know that I am the Lord.’”

Pharaoh Warned of Assyria’s Fate

31 In the (YR)eleventh year, in the third month, on the first of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his (YS)hordes,

‘Whom are you like in your greatness?
Behold, Assyria was a (YT)cedar in Lebanon
With beautiful branches and forest shade,
And [ku](YU)very high,
And its top was among the [kv]clouds.
The (YV)waters made it grow, the [kw]deep made it high.
With its rivers it continually [kx]extended all around its planting place,
And sent out its channels to all the trees of the field.
Therefore (YW)its height was loftier than all the trees of the field
And its boughs became many and its branches long
Because of (YX)many waters [ky]as it spread them out.
All the (YY)birds of the sky nested in its twigs,
And under its branches all the animals of the field gave birth,
And all great nations lived under its shade.
So it was beautiful in its greatness, in the length of its branches;
For its [kz]roots extended to many waters.
The (YZ)cedars in (ZA)God’s garden [la]could not match it;
The junipers [lb]could not compare with its branches,
And the plane trees [lc]could not match its branches.
No tree in (ZB)God’s garden [ld]could compare with it in its beauty.
I made it beautiful with the multitude of its branches,
And all the trees of (ZC)Eden, which were in the (ZD)garden of God, were jealous of it.

10 ‘Therefore this is what the Lord [le]God says: “Because [lf]it is tall in stature and has put its top among the [lg]clouds, and its (ZE)heart is haughty in its loftiness, 11 I will hand it over to a [lh](ZF)ruler of the nations; he will thoroughly deal with it. In accordance with its wickedness I have (ZG)driven it out. 12 (ZH)Foreign (ZI)tyrants of the nations have cut it down and left it; on the (ZJ)mountains and in all the valleys its branches have fallen, and its branches have been broken in all the ravines of the land. And all the peoples of the earth have (ZK)gone down from its shade and left it. 13 All the (ZL)birds of the sky will nest on its fallen trunk, and all the animals of the field will [li]rest on its fallen branches, 14 so that all the trees by the waters will not be exalted in their stature, nor put their tops among the [lj]clouds, nor will any of their [lk]well-watered mighty ones stand straight in their height. For they have all been turned over to death, to the (ZM)earth beneath, among [ll]mankind, [lm]with those who go down to the pit.”

15 ‘This is what the Lord God says: “On the day when it went down to Sheol I (ZN)caused mourning; I closed the [ln]deep over it and held back its rivers. And its many waters were stopped up, and I made Lebanon mourn for it, and all the trees of the field wilted away on account of it. 16 I made the nations (ZO)quake from the sound of its fall when I made it (ZP)go down to Sheol with those who go down to the pit; and all the [lo]well-watered trees of Eden, the choicest and best of (ZQ)Lebanon, were (ZR)comforted in the earth beneath. 17 They also (ZS)went down with it to Sheol to those who were (ZT)slain by the sword; and those who were its [lp]strength lived (ZU)in its shade among the nations.

18 “To which among the trees of Eden are you so alike in glory and greatness? Yet you will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the earth beneath; you will lie in the midst of the (ZV)uncircumcised with those who were killed by the sword. (ZW)This is Pharaoh and all his hordes!”’ declares the Lord God.”

Grief over Pharaoh and Egypt

32 In the (ZX)twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, take up a (ZY)song of mourning over Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say to him,

‘You [lq]compared yourself to a young (ZZ)lion of the nations,
Yet you are like the (AAA)monster in the seas;
And you (AAB)burst forth in your rivers
And muddied the waters with your feet
And [lr]fouled their rivers.’”

This is what the Lord [ls]God says:

“Now I will (AAC)spread My net over you
With a contingent of many peoples,
And they will lift you up in My net.
I will leave you on the land;
I will hurl you on the [lt]open field.
And I will cause all the (AAD)birds of the sky to [lu]nest on you,
And I will satisfy the animals of the whole earth [lv]with you.
I will lay your flesh (AAE)on the mountains
And fill the valleys with your refuse.
I will also make the land drink the discharge of your (AAF)blood
As far as the mountains,
And the ravines will be full of you.
And when I (AAG)extinguish you,
I will (AAH)cover the heavens and darken their (AAI)stars;
I will cover the (AAJ)sun with a cloud
And the moon will not give its light.
All the shining (AAK)lights in the heavens
I will darken over you
And will set darkness on your land,”
Declares the Lord God.

“I will also (AAL)trouble the hearts of many peoples when I (AAM)bring your destruction among the nations, into lands which you have not known. 10 And I will make many peoples (AAN)appalled at you, and their kings will be horribly afraid of you when I brandish My sword before them; and (AAO)they will tremble again and again, every person for his own life, on the day of your fall.”

11 For (AAP)the Lord God says (AAQ)this: “The sword of the king of Babylon will [lw]attack you. 12 By the swords of the warriors I will make your multitude fall; all of them are (AAR)tyrants of the nations,

And they will (AAS)devastate the pride of Egypt,
And all its multitude will be destroyed.
13 I will also eliminate all its cattle from beside many waters;
And (AAT)a human foot will not muddy them anymore,
And the hoofs of animals will not muddy them.
14 Then I will make their waters settle,
And make their rivers run like oil,”
Declares the Lord God.

Jerusalem as an Adulterous Wife

16 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, confront(A) Jerusalem with her detestable practices(B) and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Jerusalem: Your ancestry(C) and birth were in the land of the Canaanites; your father(D) was an Amorite(E) and your mother a Hittite.(F) On the day you were born(G) your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to make you clean, nor were you rubbed with salt or wrapped in cloths. No one looked on you with pity or had compassion enough to do any of these things for you. Rather, you were thrown out into the open field, for on the day you were born you were despised.

“‘Then I passed by and saw you kicking about in your blood, and as you lay there in your blood I said to you, “Live!”[a](H) I made you grow(I) like a plant of the field. You grew and developed and entered puberty. Your breasts had formed and your hair had grown, yet you were stark naked.(J)

“‘Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment(K) over you and covered your naked body. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant(L) with you, declares the Sovereign Lord, and you became mine.(M)

“‘I bathed you with water and washed(N) the blood from you and put ointments on you. 10 I clothed you with an embroidered(O) dress and put sandals of fine leather on you. I dressed you in fine linen(P) and covered you with costly garments.(Q) 11 I adorned you with jewelry:(R) I put bracelets(S) on your arms and a necklace(T) around your neck, 12 and I put a ring on your nose,(U) earrings(V) on your ears and a beautiful crown(W) on your head.(X) 13 So you were adorned with gold and silver; your clothes(Y) were of fine linen and costly fabric and embroidered cloth. Your food was honey, olive oil(Z) and the finest flour. You became very beautiful and rose to be a queen.(AA) 14 And your fame(AB) spread among the nations on account of your beauty,(AC) because the splendor I had given you made your beauty perfect, declares the Sovereign Lord.(AD)

15 “‘But you trusted in your beauty and used your fame to become a prostitute. You lavished your favors on anyone who passed by(AE) and your beauty became his.(AF) 16 You took some of your garments to make gaudy high places,(AG) where you carried on your prostitution.(AH) You went to him, and he possessed your beauty.[b] 17 You also took the fine jewelry I gave you, the jewelry made of my gold and silver, and you made for yourself male idols and engaged in prostitution with them.(AI) 18 And you took your embroidered clothes to put on them, and you offered my oil and incense(AJ) before them. 19 Also the food I provided for you—the flour, olive oil and honey I gave you to eat—you offered as fragrant incense before them. That is what happened, declares the Sovereign Lord.(AK)

20 “‘And you took your sons and daughters(AL) whom you bore to me(AM) and sacrificed them as food to the idols. Was your prostitution not enough?(AN) 21 You slaughtered my children and sacrificed them to the idols.(AO) 22 In all your detestable practices and your prostitution you did not remember the days of your youth,(AP) when you were naked and bare,(AQ) kicking about in your blood.(AR)

23 “‘Woe!(AS) Woe to you, declares the Sovereign Lord. In addition to all your other wickedness, 24 you built a mound for yourself and made a lofty shrine(AT) in every public square.(AU) 25 At every street corner(AV) you built your lofty shrines and degraded your beauty, spreading your legs with increasing promiscuity to anyone who passed by.(AW) 26 You engaged in prostitution(AX) with the Egyptians,(AY) your neighbors with large genitals, and aroused my anger(AZ) with your increasing promiscuity.(BA) 27 So I stretched out my hand(BB) against you and reduced your territory; I gave you over(BC) to the greed of your enemies, the daughters of the Philistines,(BD) who were shocked by your lewd conduct. 28 You engaged in prostitution with the Assyrians(BE) too, because you were insatiable; and even after that, you still were not satisfied.(BF) 29 Then you increased your promiscuity to include Babylonia,[c](BG) a land of merchants, but even with this you were not satisfied.(BH)

30 “‘I am filled with fury against you,[d] declares the Sovereign Lord, when you do all these things, acting like a brazen prostitute!(BI) 31 When you built your mounds at every street corner and made your lofty shrines(BJ) in every public square, you were unlike a prostitute, because you scorned payment.

32 “‘You adulterous wife! You prefer strangers to your own husband! 33 All prostitutes receive gifts,(BK) but you give gifts(BL) to all your lovers, bribing them to come to you from everywhere for your illicit favors.(BM) 34 So in your prostitution you are the opposite of others; no one runs after you for your favors. You are the very opposite, for you give payment and none is given to you.

35 “‘Therefore, you prostitute, hear the word of the Lord! 36 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you poured out your lust and exposed your naked body in your promiscuity with your lovers, and because of all your detestable idols, and because you gave them your children’s blood,(BN) 37 therefore I am going to gather all your lovers, with whom you found pleasure, those you loved as well as those you hated. I will gather them against you from all around and will strip(BO) you in front of them, and they will see you stark naked.(BP) 38 I will sentence you to the punishment of women who commit adultery and who shed blood;(BQ) I will bring on you the blood vengeance of my wrath and jealous anger.(BR) 39 Then I will deliver you into the hands(BS) of your lovers, and they will tear down your mounds and destroy your lofty shrines. They will strip you of your clothes and take your fine jewelry and leave you stark naked.(BT) 40 They will bring a mob against you, who will stone(BU) you and hack you to pieces with their swords. 41 They will burn down(BV) your houses and inflict punishment on you in the sight of many women.(BW) I will put a stop(BX) to your prostitution, and you will no longer pay your lovers. 42 Then my wrath against you will subside and my jealous anger will turn away from you; I will be calm and no longer angry.(BY)

43 “‘Because you did not remember(BZ) the days of your youth but enraged me with all these things, I will surely bring down(CA) on your head what you have done, declares the Sovereign Lord. Did you not add lewdness to all your other detestable practices?(CB)

44 “‘Everyone who quotes proverbs(CC) will quote this proverb about you: “Like mother, like daughter.” 45 You are a true daughter of your mother, who despised(CD) her husband(CE) and her children; and you are a true sister of your sisters, who despised their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.(CF) 46 Your older sister(CG) was Samaria, who lived to the north of you with her daughters; and your younger sister, who lived to the south of you with her daughters, was Sodom.(CH) 47 You not only followed their ways and copied their detestable practices, but in all your ways you soon became more depraved than they.(CI) 48 As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign(CJ) Lord, your sister Sodom(CK) and her daughters never did what you and your daughters have done.(CL)

49 “‘Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom:(CM) She and her daughters were arrogant,(CN) overfed and unconcerned;(CO) they did not help the poor and needy.(CP) 50 They were haughty(CQ) and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.(CR) 51 Samaria did not commit half the sins you did. You have done more detestable things than they, and have made your sisters seem righteous by all these things you have done.(CS) 52 Bear your disgrace, for you have furnished some justification for your sisters. Because your sins were more vile than theirs, they appear more righteous(CT) than you. So then, be ashamed and bear(CU) your disgrace, for you have made your sisters appear righteous.

53 “‘However, I will restore(CV) the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters and of Samaria and her daughters, and your fortunes along with them,(CW) 54 so that you may bear your disgrace(CX) and be ashamed of all you have done in giving them comfort. 55 And your sisters, Sodom with her daughters and Samaria with her daughters, will return to what they were before; and you and your daughters will return to what you were before.(CY) 56 You would not even mention your sister Sodom in the day of your pride, 57 before your wickedness was uncovered. Even so, you are now scorned(CZ) by the daughters of Edom[e](DA) and all her neighbors and the daughters of the Philistines—all those around you who despise you. 58 You will bear the consequences of your lewdness and your detestable practices, declares the Lord.(DB)

59 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will deal with you as you deserve, because you have despised my oath by breaking the covenant.(DC) 60 Yet I will remember the covenant(DD) I made with you in the days of your youth,(DE) and I will establish an everlasting covenant(DF) with you. 61 Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed(DG) when you receive your sisters, both those who are older than you and those who are younger. I will give them to you as daughters,(DH) but not on the basis of my covenant with you. 62 So I will establish my covenant(DI) with you, and you will know that I am the Lord.(DJ) 63 Then, when I make atonement(DK) for you for all you have done, you will remember and be ashamed(DL) and never again open your mouth(DM) because of your humiliation, declares the Sovereign Lord.(DN)’”

Two Eagles and a Vine

17 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, set forth an allegory and tell it to the Israelites as a parable.(DO) Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: A great eagle(DP) with powerful wings, long feathers and full plumage of varied colors came to Lebanon.(DQ) Taking hold of the top of a cedar, he broke off(DR) its topmost shoot and carried it away to a land of merchants, where he planted it in a city of traders.

“‘He took one of the seedlings of the land and put it in fertile soil. He planted it like a willow by abundant water,(DS) and it sprouted and became a low, spreading vine. Its branches(DT) turned toward him, but its roots remained under it. So it became a vine and produced branches and put out leafy boughs.(DU)

“‘But there was another great eagle with powerful wings and full plumage. The vine now sent out its roots toward him from the plot where it was planted and stretched out its branches to him for water.(DV) It had been planted in good soil by abundant water so that it would produce branches,(DW) bear fruit and become a splendid vine.’

“Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Will it thrive? Will it not be uprooted and stripped of its fruit so that it withers? All its new growth will wither. It will not take a strong arm or many people to pull it up by the roots.(DX) 10 It has been planted,(DY) but will it thrive? Will it not wither completely when the east wind strikes it—wither away in the plot where it grew?(DZ)’”

11 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 12 “Say to this rebellious people, ‘Do you not know what these things mean?(EA)’ Say to them: ‘The king of Babylon went to Jerusalem and carried off her king and her nobles,(EB) bringing them back with him to Babylon.(EC) 13 Then he took a member of the royal family and made a treaty(ED) with him, putting him under oath.(EE) He also carried away the leading men(EF) of the land, 14 so that the kingdom would be brought low,(EG) unable to rise again, surviving only by keeping his treaty. 15 But the king rebelled(EH) against him by sending his envoys to Egypt(EI) to get horses and a large army.(EJ) Will he succeed? Will he who does such things escape? Will he break the treaty and yet escape?(EK)

16 “‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, he shall die(EL) in Babylon, in the land of the king who put him on the throne, whose oath he despised and whose treaty he broke.(EM) 17 Pharaoh(EN) with his mighty army and great horde will be of no help to him in war, when ramps(EO) are built and siege works erected to destroy many lives.(EP) 18 He despised the oath by breaking the covenant. Because he had given his hand in pledge(EQ) and yet did all these things, he shall not escape.

19 “‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: As surely as I live, I will repay him for despising my oath and breaking my covenant.(ER) 20 I will spread my net(ES) for him, and he will be caught in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon and execute judgment(ET) on him there because he was unfaithful(EU) to me. 21 All his choice troops will fall by the sword,(EV) and the survivors(EW) will be scattered to the winds.(EX) Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken.(EY)

22 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will take a shoot(EZ) from the very top of a cedar and plant it; I will break off a tender sprig from its topmost shoots and plant it on a high and lofty mountain.(FA) 23 On the mountain heights(FB) of Israel I will plant it; it will produce branches and bear fruit(FC) and become a splendid cedar. Birds of every kind will nest in it; they will find shelter in the shade of its branches.(FD) 24 All the trees of the forest(FE) will know that I the Lord bring down(FF) the tall tree and make the low tree grow tall. I dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish.(FG)

“‘I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.(FH)’”

The One Who Sins Will Die

18 The word of the Lord came to me: “What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel:

“‘The parents eat sour grapes,
    and the children’s teeth are set on edge’?(FI)

“As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, you will no longer quote this proverb(FJ) in Israel. For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as the child—both alike belong to me. The one who sins(FK) is the one who will die.(FL)

“Suppose there is a righteous man
    who does what is just and right.
He does not eat at the mountain(FM) shrines
    or look to the idols(FN) of Israel.
He does not defile his neighbor’s wife
    or have sexual relations with a woman during her period.(FO)
He does not oppress(FP) anyone,
    but returns what he took in pledge(FQ) for a loan.
He does not commit robbery(FR)
    but gives his food to the hungry(FS)
    and provides clothing for the naked.(FT)
He does not lend to them at interest
    or take a profit from them.(FU)
He withholds his hand from doing wrong
    and judges fairly(FV) between two parties.
He follows my decrees(FW)
    and faithfully keeps my laws.
That man is righteous;(FX)
    he will surely live,(FY)
declares the Sovereign Lord.

10 “Suppose he has a violent son, who sheds blood(FZ) or does any of these other things[f] 11 (though the father has done none of them):

“He eats at the mountain shrines.(GA)
He defiles his neighbor’s wife.
12 He oppresses the poor(GB) and needy.
He commits robbery.
He does not return what he took in pledge.(GC)
He looks to the idols.
He does detestable things.(GD)
13 He lends at interest and takes a profit.(GE)

Will such a man live? He will not! Because he has done all these detestable things, he is to be put to death; his blood will be on his own head.(GF)

14 “But suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father commits, and though he sees them, he does not do such things:(GG)

15 “He does not eat at the mountain shrines(GH)
    or look to the idols(GI) of Israel.
He does not defile his neighbor’s wife.
16 He does not oppress anyone
    or require a pledge for a loan.
He does not commit robbery
    but gives his food to the hungry(GJ)
    and provides clothing for the naked.(GK)
17 He withholds his hand from mistreating the poor
    and takes no interest or profit from them.
He keeps my laws(GL) and follows my decrees.

He will not die for his father’s sin; he will surely live. 18 But his father will die for his own sin, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother and did what was wrong among his people.

19 “Yet you ask, ‘Why does the son not share the guilt of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right and has been careful to keep all my decrees, he will surely live.(GM) 20 The one who sins is the one who will die.(GN) The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.(GO)

21 “But if(GP) a wicked person turns away from all the sins they have committed and keeps all my decrees(GQ) and does what is just and right, that person will surely live; they will not die.(GR) 22 None of the offenses they have committed will be remembered against them. Because of the righteous things they have done, they will live.(GS) 23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign Lord. Rather, am I not pleased(GT) when they turn from their ways and live?(GU)

24 “But if a righteous person turns(GV) from their righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked person does, will they live? None of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness(GW) they are guilty of and because of the sins they have committed, they will die.(GX)

25 “Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’(GY) Hear, you Israelites: Is my way unjust?(GZ) Is it not your ways that are unjust? 26 If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin, they will die for it; because of the sin they have committed they will die. 27 But if a wicked person turns away from the wickedness they have committed and does what is just and right, they will save their life.(HA) 28 Because they consider all the offenses they have committed and turn away from them, that person will surely live; they will not die.(HB) 29 Yet the Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are my ways unjust, people of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust?

30 “Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent!(HC) Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall.(HD) 31 Rid(HE) yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart(HF) and a new spirit. Why(HG) will you die, people of Israel?(HH) 32 For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent(HI) and live!(HJ)

A Lament Over Israel’s Princes

19 “Take up a lament(HK) concerning the princes(HL) of Israel and say:

“‘What a lioness(HM) was your mother
    among the lions!
She lay down among them
    and reared her cubs.(HN)
She brought up one of her cubs,
    and he became a strong lion.
He learned to tear the prey
    and he became a man-eater.
The nations heard about him,
    and he was trapped in their pit.
They led him with hooks(HO)
    to the land of Egypt.(HP)

“‘When she saw her hope unfulfilled,
    her expectation gone,
she took another of her cubs(HQ)
    and made him a strong lion.(HR)
He prowled among the lions,
    for he was now a strong lion.
He learned to tear the prey
    and he became a man-eater.(HS)
He broke down[g] their strongholds
    and devastated(HT) their towns.
The land and all who were in it
    were terrified by his roaring.
Then the nations(HU) came against him,
    those from regions round about.
They spread their net(HV) for him,
    and he was trapped in their pit.(HW)
With hooks(HX) they pulled him into a cage
    and brought him to the king of Babylon.(HY)
They put him in prison,
    so his roar(HZ) was heard no longer
    on the mountains of Israel.(IA)

10 “‘Your mother was like a vine in your vineyard[h](IB)
    planted by the water;(IC)
it was fruitful and full of branches
    because of abundant water.(ID)
11 Its branches were strong,
    fit for a ruler’s scepter.
It towered high
    above the thick foliage,
conspicuous for its height
    and for its many branches.(IE)
12 But it was uprooted(IF) in fury
    and thrown to the ground.
The east wind(IG) made it shrivel,
    it was stripped of its fruit;
its strong branches withered
    and fire consumed them.(IH)
13 Now it is planted in the desert,(II)
    in a dry and thirsty land.(IJ)
14 Fire spread from one of its main[i] branches
    and consumed(IK) its fruit.
No strong branch is left on it
    fit for a ruler’s scepter.’(IL)

“This is a lament(IM) and is to be used as a lament.”

Rebellious Israel Purged

20 In the seventh year, in the fifth month on the tenth day, some of the elders of Israel came to inquire(IN) of the Lord, and they sat down in front of me.(IO)

Then the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, speak to the elders(IP) of Israel and say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Have you come to inquire(IQ) of me? As surely as I live, I will not let you inquire of me, declares the Sovereign Lord.(IR)

“Will you judge them? Will you judge them, son of man? Then confront them with the detestable practices of their ancestors(IS) and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day I chose(IT) Israel, I swore with uplifted hand(IU) to the descendants of Jacob and revealed myself to them in Egypt. With uplifted hand I said to them, “I am the Lord your God.(IV) On that day I swore(IW) to them that I would bring them out of Egypt into a land I had searched out for them, a land flowing with milk and honey,(IX) the most beautiful of all lands.(IY) And I said to them, “Each of you, get rid of the vile images(IZ) you have set your eyes on, and do not defile yourselves with the idols(JA) of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.(JB)

“‘But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me;(JC) they did not get rid of the vile images they had set their eyes on, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt.(JD) So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger against them in Egypt.(JE) But for the sake of my name, I brought them out of Egypt.(JF) I did it to keep my name from being profaned(JG) in the eyes of the nations among whom they lived and in whose sight I had revealed myself to the Israelites. 10 Therefore I led them out of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness.(JH) 11 I gave them my decrees and made known to them my laws, by which the person who obeys them will live.(JI) 12 Also I gave them my Sabbaths(JJ) as a sign(JK) between us,(JL) so they would know that I the Lord made them holy.(JM)

13 “‘Yet the people of Israel rebelled(JN) against me in the wilderness. They did not follow my decrees but rejected my laws(JO)—by which the person who obeys them will live—and they utterly desecrated my Sabbaths.(JP) So I said I would pour out my wrath(JQ) on them and destroy(JR) them in the wilderness.(JS) 14 But for the sake of my name I did what would keep it from being profaned(JT) in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out.(JU) 15 Also with uplifted hand I swore(JV) to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land I had given them—a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands(JW) 16 because they rejected my laws(JX) and did not follow my decrees and desecrated my Sabbaths. For their hearts(JY) were devoted to their idols.(JZ) 17 Yet I looked on them with pity and did not destroy(KA) them or put an end to them in the wilderness. 18 I said to their children in the wilderness, “Do not follow the statutes of your parents(KB) or keep their laws or defile yourselves(KC) with their idols. 19 I am the Lord your God;(KD) follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.(KE) 20 Keep my Sabbaths(KF) holy, that they may be a sign(KG) between us. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.(KH)

21 “‘But the children rebelled against me: They did not follow my decrees, they were not careful to keep my laws,(KI) of which I said, “The person who obeys them will live by them,” and they desecrated my Sabbaths. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger(KJ) against them in the wilderness.(KK) 22 But I withheld(KL) my hand, and for the sake of my name(KM) I did what would keep it from being profaned in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out. 23 Also with uplifted hand I swore to them in the wilderness that I would disperse them among the nations and scatter(KN) them through the countries, 24 because they had not obeyed my laws but had rejected my decrees(KO) and desecrated my Sabbaths,(KP) and their eyes lusted after(KQ) their parents’ idols.(KR) 25 So I gave(KS) them other statutes that were not good and laws through which they could not live;(KT) 26 I defiled them through their gifts—the sacrifice(KU) of every firstborn—that I might fill them with horror so they would know that I am the Lord.(KV)

27 “Therefore, son of man, speak to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: In this also your ancestors(KW) blasphemed(KX) me by being unfaithful to me:(KY) 28 When I brought them into the land(KZ) I had sworn to give them and they saw any high hill or any leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices, made offerings that aroused my anger, presented their fragrant incense and poured out their drink offerings.(LA) 29 Then I said to them: What is this high place(LB) you go to?’” (It is called Bamah[j] to this day.)

Rebellious Israel Renewed

30 “Therefore say to the Israelites: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Will you defile yourselves(LC) the way your ancestors did and lust after their vile images?(LD) 31 When you offer your gifts—the sacrifice of your children(LE) in the fire—you continue to defile yourselves with all your idols to this day. Am I to let you inquire of me, you Israelites? As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will not let you inquire of me.(LF)

32 “‘You say, “We want to be like the nations, like the peoples of the world, who serve wood and stone.” But what you have in mind will never happen. 33 As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will reign over you with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm(LG) and with outpoured wrath.(LH) 34 I will bring you from the nations(LI) and gather(LJ) you from the countries where you have been scattered—with a mighty hand(LK) and an outstretched arm and with outpoured wrath.(LL) 35 I will bring you into the wilderness(LM) of the nations and there, face to face, I will execute judgment(LN) upon you. 36 As I judged your ancestors in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will judge you, declares the Sovereign Lord.(LO) 37 I will take note of you as you pass under my rod,(LP) and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant.(LQ) 38 I will purge(LR) you of those who revolt and rebel against me. Although I will bring them out of the land where they are living, yet they will not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Lord.(LS)

39 “‘As for you, people of Israel, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Go and serve your idols,(LT) every one of you! But afterward you will surely listen to me and no longer profane my holy name(LU) with your gifts and idols.(LV) 40 For on my holy mountain, the high mountain of Israel,(LW) declares the Sovereign Lord, there in the land all the people of Israel will serve me, and there I will accept them. There I will require your offerings(LX) and your choice gifts,[k] along with all your holy sacrifices.(LY) 41 I will accept you as fragrant incense(LZ) when I bring you out from the nations and gather(MA) you from the countries where you have been scattered, and I will be proved holy(MB) through you in the sight of the nations.(MC) 42 Then you will know that I am the Lord,(MD) when I bring you into the land of Israel,(ME) the land I had sworn with uplifted hand to give to your ancestors.(MF) 43 There you will remember your conduct(MG) and all the actions by which you have defiled yourselves, and you will loathe yourselves(MH) for all the evil you have done.(MI) 44 You will know that I am the Lord, when I deal with you for my name’s sake(MJ) and not according to your evil ways and your corrupt practices, you people of Israel, declares the Sovereign Lord.(MK)’”

Prophecy Against the South

45 The word of the Lord came to me: 46 “Son of man, set your face toward(ML) the south; preach against the south and prophesy against(MM) the forest of the southland.(MN) 47 Say to the southern forest:(MO) ‘Hear the word of the Lord. This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am about to set fire to you, and it will consume(MP) all your trees, both green and dry. The blazing flame will not be quenched, and every face from south to north(MQ) will be scorched by it.(MR) 48 Everyone will see that I the Lord have kindled it; it will not be quenched.(MS)’”

49 Then I said, “Sovereign Lord,(MT) they are saying of me, ‘Isn’t he just telling parables?(MU)’”[l]

Babylon as God’s Sword of Judgment

21 [m]The word of the Lord came to me:(MV) “Son of man, set your face against(MW) Jerusalem and preach against the sanctuary.(MX) Prophesy against(MY) the land of Israel and say to her: ‘This is what the Lord says: I am against you.(MZ) I will draw my sword(NA) from its sheath and cut off from you both the righteous and the wicked.(NB) Because I am going to cut off the righteous and the wicked, my sword(NC) will be unsheathed against everyone from south to north.(ND) Then all people will know that I the Lord have drawn my sword(NE) from its sheath; it will not return(NF) again.’(NG)

“Therefore groan, son of man! Groan before them with broken heart and bitter grief.(NH) And when they ask you, ‘Why are you groaning?(NI)’ you shall say, ‘Because of the news that is coming. Every heart will melt with fear(NJ) and every hand go limp;(NK) every spirit will become faint(NL) and every leg will be wet with urine.’(NM) It is coming! It will surely take place, declares the Sovereign Lord.”

The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Lord says:

“‘A sword, a sword,
    sharpened and polished—
10 sharpened for the slaughter,(NN)
    polished to flash like lightning!

“‘Shall we rejoice in the scepter of my royal son? The sword despises every such stick.(NO)

11 “‘The sword is appointed to be polished,(NP)
    to be grasped with the hand;
it is sharpened and polished,
    made ready for the hand of the slayer.
12 Cry out and wail, son of man,
    for it is against my people;
    it is against all the princes of Israel.
They are thrown to the sword
    along with my people.
Therefore beat your breast.(NQ)

13 “‘Testing will surely come. And what if even the scepter, which the sword despises, does not continue? declares the Sovereign Lord.’

14 “So then, son of man, prophesy
    and strike your hands(NR) together.
Let the sword strike twice,
    even three times.
It is a sword for slaughter—
    a sword for great slaughter,
    closing in on them from every side.(NS)
15 So that hearts may melt with fear(NT)
    and the fallen be many,
I have stationed the sword for slaughter[n]
    at all their gates.
Look! It is forged to strike like lightning,
    it is grasped for slaughter.(NU)
16 Slash to the right, you sword,
    then to the left,
    wherever your blade is turned.
17 I too will strike my hands(NV) together,
    and my wrath(NW) will subside.
I the Lord have spoken.(NX)

18 The word of the Lord came to me: 19 “Son of man, mark out two roads for the sword(NY) of the king of Babylon to take, both starting from the same country. Make a signpost(NZ) where the road branches off to the city. 20 Mark out one road for the sword to come against Rabbah of the Ammonites(OA) and another against Judah and fortified Jerusalem. 21 For the king of Babylon will stop at the fork in the road, at the junction of the two roads, to seek an omen: He will cast lots(OB) with arrows, he will consult his idols,(OC) he will examine the liver.(OD) 22 Into his right hand will come the lot for Jerusalem, where he is to set up battering rams, to give the command to slaughter, to sound the battle cry,(OE) to set battering rams against the gates, to build a ramp(OF) and to erect siege works.(OG) 23 It will seem like a false omen to those who have sworn allegiance to him, but he will remind(OH) them of their guilt(OI) and take them captive.

24 “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because you people have brought to mind your guilt by your open rebellion, revealing your sins in all that you do—because you have done this, you will be taken captive.

25 “‘You profane and wicked prince of Israel, whose day has come,(OJ) whose time of punishment has reached its climax,(OK) 26 this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Take off the turban, remove the crown.(OL) It will not be as it was: The lowly will be exalted and the exalted will be brought low.(OM) 27 A ruin! A ruin! I will make it a ruin! The crown will not be restored until he to whom it rightfully belongs shall come;(ON) to him I will give it.’(OO)

28 “And you, son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says about the Ammonites(OP) and their insults:

“‘A sword,(OQ) a sword,
    drawn for the slaughter,
polished to consume
    and to flash like lightning!
29 Despite false visions concerning you
    and lying divinations(OR) about you,
it will be laid on the necks
    of the wicked who are to be slain,
whose day has come,
    whose time of punishment has reached its climax.(OS)

30 “‘Let the sword return to its sheath.(OT)
    In the place where you were created,
in the land of your ancestry,(OU)
    I will judge you.
31 I will pour out my wrath on you
    and breathe(OV) out my fiery anger(OW) against you;
I will deliver you into the hands of brutal men,
    men skilled in destruction.(OX)
32 You will be fuel for the fire,(OY)
    your blood will be shed in your land,
you will be remembered(OZ) no more;
    for I the Lord have spoken.’”

Judgment on Jerusalem’s Sins

22 The word of the Lord came to me:

“Son of man, will you judge her? Will you judge this city of bloodshed?(PA) Then confront her with all her detestable practices(PB) and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: You city that brings on herself doom by shedding blood(PC) in her midst and defiles herself by making idols, you have become guilty because of the blood you have shed(PD) and have become defiled by the idols you have made. You have brought your days to a close, and the end of your years has come.(PE) Therefore I will make you an object of scorn(PF) to the nations and a laughingstock to all the countries.(PG) Those who are near and those who are far away will mock you, you infamous city, full of turmoil.(PH)

“‘See how each of the princes of Israel who are in you uses his power to shed blood.(PI) In you they have treated father and mother with contempt;(PJ) in you they have oppressed the foreigner(PK) and mistreated the fatherless and the widow.(PL) You have despised my holy things and desecrated my Sabbaths.(PM) In you are slanderers(PN) who are bent on shedding blood;(PO) in you are those who eat at the mountain shrines(PP) and commit lewd acts.(PQ) 10 In you are those who dishonor their father’s bed;(PR) in you are those who violate women during their period,(PS) when they are ceremonially unclean.(PT) 11 In you one man commits a detestable offense with his neighbor’s wife,(PU) another shamefully defiles his daughter-in-law,(PV) and another violates his sister,(PW) his own father’s daughter.(PX) 12 In you are people who accept bribes(PY) to shed blood; you take interest(PZ) and make a profit from the poor. You extort unjust gain from your neighbors.(QA) And you have forgotten(QB) me, declares the Sovereign Lord.(QC)

13 “‘I will surely strike my hands(QD) together at the unjust gain(QE) you have made and at the blood(QF) you have shed in your midst.(QG) 14 Will your courage endure(QH) or your hands(QI) be strong in the day I deal with you? I the Lord have spoken,(QJ) and I will do it.(QK) 15 I will disperse you among the nations and scatter(QL) you through the countries; and I will put an end to(QM) your uncleanness.(QN) 16 When you have been defiled[o] in the eyes of the nations, you will know that I am the Lord.’”

17 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 18 “Son of man, the people of Israel have become dross(QO) to me; all of them are the copper, tin, iron and lead left inside a furnace.(QP) They are but the dross of silver.(QQ) 19 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because you have all become dross,(QR) I will gather you into Jerusalem. 20 As silver, copper, iron, lead and tin are gathered into a furnace to be melted with a fiery blast, so will I gather you in my anger and my wrath and put you inside the city and melt you.(QS) 21 I will gather you and I will blow(QT) on you with my fiery wrath, and you will be melted inside her.(QU) 22 As silver is melted(QV) in a furnace, so you will be melted inside her, and you will know that I the Lord have poured out my wrath(QW) on you.’”(QX)

23 Again the word of the Lord came to me: 24 “Son of man, say to the land, ‘You are a land that has not been cleansed or rained on in the day of wrath.’(QY) 25 There is a conspiracy(QZ) of her princes[p] within her like a roaring lion(RA) tearing its prey; they devour people,(RB) take treasures and precious things and make many widows(RC) within her. 26 Her priests do violence to my law(RD) and profane my holy things; they do not distinguish between the holy and the common;(RE) they teach that there is no difference between the unclean and the clean;(RF) and they shut their eyes to the keeping of my Sabbaths, so that I am profaned(RG) among them.(RH) 27 Her officials(RI) within her are like wolves(RJ) tearing their prey; they shed blood and kill people(RK) to make unjust gain.(RL) 28 Her prophets whitewash(RM) these deeds for them by false visions and lying divinations.(RN) They say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says’—when the Lord has not spoken.(RO) 29 The people of the land practice extortion and commit robbery;(RP) they oppress the poor and needy and mistreat the foreigner,(RQ) denying them justice.(RR)

Two Adulterous Sisters

23 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, there were two women, daughters of the same mother.(RX) They became prostitutes in Egypt,(RY) engaging in prostitution(RZ) from their youth.(SA) In that land their breasts were fondled and their virgin bosoms caressed.(SB) The older was named Oholah, and her sister was Oholibah. 16 Again the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Son of man, cause Jerusalem to know her abominations,

And say, Thus saith the Lord God unto Jerusalem; Thy birth and thy nativity is of the land of Canaan; thy father was an Amorite, and thy mother an Hittite.

And as for thy nativity, in the day thou wast born thy navel was not cut, neither wast thou washed in water to supple thee; thou wast not salted at all, nor swaddled at all.

None eye pitied thee, to do any of these unto thee, to have compassion upon thee; but thou wast cast out in the open field, to the lothing of thy person, in the day that thou wast born.

And when I passed by thee, and saw thee polluted in thine own blood, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live; yea, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live.

I have caused thee to multiply as the bud of the field, and thou hast increased and waxen great, and thou art come to excellent ornaments: thy breasts are fashioned, and thine hair is grown, whereas thou wast naked and bare.

Now when I passed by thee, and looked upon thee, behold, thy time was the time of love; and I spread my skirt over thee, and covered thy nakedness: yea, I sware unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord God, and thou becamest mine.

Then washed I thee with water; yea, I throughly washed away thy blood from thee, and I anointed thee with oil.

10 I clothed thee also with broidered work, and shod thee with badgers' skin, and I girded thee about with fine linen, and I covered thee with silk.

11 I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck.

12 And I put a jewel on thy forehead, and earrings in thine ears, and a beautiful crown upon thine head.

13 Thus wast thou decked with gold and silver; and thy raiment was of fine linen, and silk, and broidered work; thou didst eat fine flour, and honey, and oil: and thou wast exceeding beautiful, and thou didst prosper into a kingdom.

14 And thy renown went forth among the heathen for thy beauty: for it was perfect through my comeliness, which I had put upon thee, saith the Lord God.

15 But thou didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the harlot because of thy renown, and pouredst out thy fornications on every one that passed by; his it was.

16 And of thy garments thou didst take, and deckedst thy high places with divers colours, and playedst the harlot thereupon: the like things shall not come, neither shall it be so.

17 Thou hast also taken thy fair jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given thee, and madest to thyself images of men, and didst commit whoredom with them,

18 And tookest thy broidered garments, and coveredst them: and thou hast set mine oil and mine incense before them.

19 My meat also which I gave thee, fine flour, and oil, and honey, wherewith I fed thee, thou hast even set it before them for a sweet savour: and thus it was, saith the Lord God.

20 Moreover thou hast taken thy sons and thy daughters, whom thou hast borne unto me, and these hast thou sacrificed unto them to be devoured. Is this of thy whoredoms a small matter,

21 That thou hast slain my children, and delivered them to cause them to pass through the fire for them?

22 And in all thine abominations and thy whoredoms thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, when thou wast naked and bare, and wast polluted in thy blood.

23 And it came to pass after all thy wickedness, (woe, woe unto thee! saith the Lord God;)

24 That thou hast also built unto thee an eminent place, and hast made thee an high place in every street.

25 Thou hast built thy high place at every head of the way, and hast made thy beauty to be abhorred, and hast opened thy feet to every one that passed by, and multiplied thy whoredoms.

26 Thou hast also committed fornication with the Egyptians thy neighbours, great of flesh; and hast increased thy whoredoms, to provoke me to anger.

27 Behold, therefore I have stretched out my hand over thee, and have diminished thine ordinary food, and delivered thee unto the will of them that hate thee, the daughters of the Philistines, which are ashamed of thy lewd way.

28 Thou hast played the whore also with the Assyrians, because thou wast unsatiable; yea, thou hast played the harlot with them, and yet couldest not be satisfied.

29 Thou hast moreover multiplied thy fornication in the land of Canaan unto Chaldea; and yet thou wast not satisfied therewith.

30 How weak is thine heart, saith the Lord God, seeing thou doest all these things, the work of an imperious whorish woman;

31 In that thou buildest thine eminent place in the head of every way, and makest thine high place in every street; and hast not been as an harlot, in that thou scornest hire;

32 But as a wife that committeth adultery, which taketh strangers instead of her husband!

33 They give gifts to all whores: but thou givest thy gifts to all thy lovers, and hirest them, that they may come unto thee on every side for thy whoredom.

34 And the contrary is in thee from other women in thy whoredoms, whereas none followeth thee to commit whoredoms: and in that thou givest a reward, and no reward is given unto thee, therefore thou art contrary.

35 Wherefore, O harlot, hear the word of the Lord:

36 Thus saith the Lord God; Because thy filthiness was poured out, and thy nakedness discovered through thy whoredoms with thy lovers, and with all the idols of thy abominations, and by the blood of thy children, which thou didst give unto them;

37 Behold, therefore I will gather all thy lovers, with whom thou hast taken pleasure, and all them that thou hast loved, with all them that thou hast hated; I will even gather them round about against thee, and will discover thy nakedness unto them, that they may see all thy nakedness.

38 And I will judge thee, as women that break wedlock and shed blood are judged; and I will give thee blood in fury and jealousy.

39 And I will also give thee into their hand, and they shall throw down thine eminent place, and shall break down thy high places: they shall strip thee also of thy clothes, and shall take thy fair jewels, and leave thee naked and bare.

40 They shall also bring up a company against thee, and they shall stone thee with stones, and thrust thee through with their swords.

41 And they shall burn thine houses with fire, and execute judgments upon thee in the sight of many women: and I will cause thee to cease from playing the harlot, and thou also shalt give no hire any more.

42 So will I make my fury toward thee to rest, and my jealousy shall depart from thee, and I will be quiet, and will be no more angry.

43 Because thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, but hast fretted me in all these things; behold, therefore I also will recompense thy way upon thine head, saith the Lord God: and thou shalt not commit this lewdness above all thine abominations.

44 Behold, every one that useth proverbs shall use this proverb against thee, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter.

45 Thou art thy mother's daughter, that lotheth her husband and her children; and thou art the sister of thy sisters, which lothed their husbands and their children: your mother was an Hittite, and your father an Amorite.

46 And thine elder sister is Samaria, she and her daughters that dwell at thy left hand: and thy younger sister, that dwelleth at thy right hand, is Sodom and her daughters.

47 Yet hast thou not walked after their ways, nor done after their abominations: but, as if that were a very little thing, thou wast corrupted more than they in all thy ways.

48 As I live, saith the Lord God, Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters.

49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

50 And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.

51 Neither hath Samaria committed half of thy sins; but thou hast multiplied thine abominations more than they, and hast justified thy sisters in all thine abominations which thou hast done.

52 Thou also, which hast judged thy sisters, bear thine own shame for thy sins that thou hast committed more abominable than they: they are more righteous than thou: yea, be thou confounded also, and bear thy shame, in that thou hast justified thy sisters.

53 When I shall bring again their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, then will I bring again the captivity of thy captives in the midst of them:

54 That thou mayest bear thine own shame, and mayest be confounded in all that thou hast done, in that thou art a comfort unto them.

55 When thy sisters, Sodom and her daughters, shall return to their former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate, then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate.

56 For thy sister Sodom was not mentioned by thy mouth in the day of thy pride,

57 Before thy wickedness was discovered, as at the time of thy reproach of the daughters of Syria, and all that are round about her, the daughters of the Philistines, which despise thee round about.

58 Thou hast borne thy lewdness and thine abominations, saith the Lord.

59 For thus saith the Lord God; I will even deal with thee as thou hast done, which hast despised the oath in breaking the covenant.

60 Nevertheless I will remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will establish unto thee an everlasting covenant.

61 Then thou shalt remember thy ways, and be ashamed, when thou shalt receive thy sisters, thine elder and thy younger: and I will give them unto thee for daughters, but not by thy covenant.

62 And I will establish my covenant with thee; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord:

63 That thou mayest remember, and be confounded, and never open thy mouth any more because of thy shame, when I am pacified toward thee for all that thou hast done, saith the Lord God.

17 And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable unto the house of Israel;

And say, Thus saith the Lord God; A great eagle with great wings, longwinged, full of feathers, which had divers colours, came unto Lebanon, and took the highest branch of the cedar:

He cropped off the top of his young twigs, and carried it into a land of traffick; he set it in a city of merchants.

He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful field; he placed it by great waters, and set it as a willow tree.

And it grew, and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose branches turned toward him, and the roots thereof were under him: so it became a vine, and brought forth branches, and shot forth sprigs.

There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers: and, behold, this vine did bend her roots toward him, and shot forth her branches toward him, that he might water it by the furrows of her plantation.

It was planted in a good soil by great waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine.

Say thou, Thus saith the Lord God; Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up the roots thereof, and cut off the fruit thereof, that it wither? it shall wither in all the leaves of her spring, even without great power or many people to pluck it up by the roots thereof.

10 Yea, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind toucheth it? it shall wither in the furrows where it grew.

11 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

12 Say now to the rebellious house, Know ye not what these things mean? tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon is come to Jerusalem, and hath taken the king thereof, and the princes thereof, and led them with him to Babylon;

13 And hath taken of the king's seed, and made a covenant with him, and hath taken an oath of him: he hath also taken the mighty of the land:

14 That the kingdom might be base, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping of his covenant it might stand.

15 But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he prosper? shall he escape that doeth such things? or shall he break the covenant, and be delivered?

16 As I live, saith the Lord God, surely in the place where the king dwelleth that made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he brake, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die.

17 Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company make for him in the war, by casting up mounts, and building forts, to cut off many persons:

18 Seeing he despised the oath by breaking the covenant, when, lo, he had given his hand, and hath done all these things, he shall not escape.

19 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; As I live, surely mine oath that he hath despised, and my covenant that he hath broken, even it will I recompense upon his own head.

20 And I will spread my net upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and will plead with him there for his trespass that he hath trespassed against me.

21 And all his fugitives with all his bands shall fall by the sword, and they that remain shall be scattered toward all winds: and ye shall know that I the Lord have spoken it.

22 Thus saith the Lord God; I will also take of the highest branch of the high cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the top of his young twigs a tender one, and will plant it upon an high mountain and eminent:

23 In the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it: and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and under it shall dwell all fowl of every wing; in the shadow of the branches thereof shall they dwell.

24 And all the trees of the field shall know that I the Lord have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish: I the Lord have spoken and have done it.

18 The word of the Lord came unto me again, saying,

What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge?

As I live, saith the Lord God, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.

Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,

And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman,

And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;

He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man,

Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord God.

10 If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things,

11 And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour's wife,

12 Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination,

13 Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.

14 Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father's sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like,

15 That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour's wife,

16 Neither hath oppressed any, hath not withholden the pledge, neither hath spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,

17 That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.

18 As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.

19 Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.

20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

22 All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.

23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord God: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?

24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.

25 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?

26 When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.

27 Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.

28 Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

29 Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?

30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord God. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.

19 Moreover take thou up a lamentation for the princes of Israel,

And say, What is thy mother? A lioness: she lay down among lions, she nourished her whelps among young lions.

And she brought up one of her whelps: it became a young lion, and it learned to catch the prey; it devoured men.

The nations also heard of him; he was taken in their pit, and they brought him with chains unto the land of Egypt.

Now when she saw that she had waited, and her hope was lost, then she took another of her whelps, and made him a young lion.

And he went up and down among the lions, he became a young lion, and learned to catch the prey, and devoured men.

And he knew their desolate palaces, and he laid waste their cities; and the land was desolate, and the fulness thereof, by the noise of his roaring.

Then the nations set against him on every side from the provinces, and spread their net over him: he was taken in their pit.

And they put him in ward in chains, and brought him to the king of Babylon: they brought him into holds, that his voice should no more be heard upon the mountains of Israel.

10 Thy mother is like a vine in thy blood, planted by the waters: she was fruitful and full of branches by reason of many waters.

11 And she had strong rods for the sceptres of them that bare rule, and her stature was exalted among the thick branches, and she appeared in her height with the multitude of her branches.

12 But she was plucked up in fury, she was cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up her fruit: her strong rods were broken and withered; the fire consumed them.

13 And now she is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and thirsty ground.

14 And fire is gone out of a rod of her branches, which hath devoured her fruit, so that she hath no strong rod to be a sceptre to rule. This is a lamentation, and shall be for a lamentation.

20 And it came to pass in the seventh year, in the fifth month, the tenth day of the month, that certain of the elders of Israel came to enquire of the Lord, and sat before me.

Then came the word of the Lord unto me, saying,

Son of man, speak unto the elders of Israel, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Are ye come to enquire of me? As I live, saith the Lord God, I will not be enquired of by you.

Wilt thou judge them, son of man, wilt thou judge them? cause them to know the abominations of their fathers:

And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; In the day when I chose Israel, and lifted up mine hand unto the seed of the house of Jacob, and made myself known unto them in the land of Egypt, when I lifted up mine hand unto them, saying, I am the Lord your God;

In the day that I lifted up mine hand unto them, to bring them forth of the land of Egypt into a land that I had espied for them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands:

Then said I unto them, Cast ye away every man the abominations of his eyes, and defile not yourselves with the idols of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

But they rebelled against me, and would not hearken unto me: they did not every man cast away the abominations of their eyes, neither did they forsake the idols of Egypt: then I said, I will pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.

But I wrought for my name's sake, that it should not be polluted before the heathen, among whom they were, in whose sight I made myself known unto them, in bringing them forth out of the land of Egypt.

10 Wherefore I caused them to go forth out of the land of Egypt, and brought them into the wilderness.

11 And I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them.

12 Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them.

13 But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness: they walked not in my statutes, and they despised my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; and my sabbaths they greatly polluted: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.

14 But I wrought for my name's sake, that it should not be polluted before the heathen, in whose sight I brought them out.

15 Yet also I lifted up my hand unto them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands;

16 Because they despised my judgments, and walked not in my statutes, but polluted my sabbaths: for their heart went after their idols.

17 Nevertheless mine eye spared them from destroying them, neither did I make an end of them in the wilderness.

18 But I said unto their children in the wilderness, Walk ye not in the statutes of your fathers, neither observe their judgments, nor defile yourselves with their idols:

19 I am the Lord your God; walk in my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them;

20 And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the Lord your God.

21 Notwithstanding the children rebelled against me: they walked not in my statutes, neither kept my judgments to do them, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; they polluted my sabbaths: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the wilderness.

22 Nevertheless I withdrew mine hand, and wrought for my name's sake, that it should not be polluted in the sight of the heathen, in whose sight I brought them forth.

23 I lifted up mine hand unto them also in the wilderness, that I would scatter them among the heathen, and disperse them through the countries;

24 Because they had not executed my judgments, but had despised my statutes, and had polluted my sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers' idols.

25 Wherefore I gave them also statutes that were not good, and judgments whereby they should not live;

26 And I polluted them in their own gifts, in that they caused to pass through the fire all that openeth the womb, that I might make them desolate, to the end that they might know that I am the Lord.

27 Therefore, son of man, speak unto the house of Israel, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Yet in this your fathers have blasphemed me, in that they have committed a trespass against me.

28 For when I had brought them into the land, for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to them, then they saw every high hill, and all the thick trees, and they offered there their sacrifices, and there they presented the provocation of their offering: there also they made their sweet savour, and poured out there their drink offerings.

29 Then I said unto them, What is the high place whereunto ye go? And the name whereof is called Bamah unto this day.

30 Wherefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God; Are ye polluted after the manner of your fathers? and commit ye whoredom after their abominations?

31 For when ye offer your gifts, when ye make your sons to pass through the fire, ye pollute yourselves with all your idols, even unto this day: and shall I be enquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, saith the Lord God, I will not be enquired of by you.

32 And that which cometh into your mind shall not be at all, that ye say, We will be as the heathen, as the families of the countries, to serve wood and stone.

33 As I live, saith the Lord God, surely with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out, will I rule over you:

34 And I will bring you out from the people, and will gather you out of the countries wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out.

35 And I will bring you into the wilderness of the people, and there will I plead with you face to face.

36 Like as I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I plead with you, saith the Lord God.

37 And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant:

38 And I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the Lord.

39 As for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord God; Go ye, serve ye every one his idols, and hereafter also, if ye will not hearken unto me: but pollute ye my holy name no more with your gifts, and with your idols.

40 For in mine holy mountain, in the mountain of the height of Israel, saith the Lord God, there shall all the house of Israel, all of them in the land, serve me: there will I accept them, and there will I require your offerings, and the firstfruits of your oblations, with all your holy things.

41 I will accept you with your sweet savour, when I bring you out from the people, and gather you out of the countries wherein ye have been scattered; and I will be sanctified in you before the heathen.

42 And ye shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall bring you into the land of Israel, into the country for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to your fathers.

43 And there shall ye remember your ways, and all your doings, wherein ye have been defiled; and ye shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for all your evils that ye have committed.

44 And ye shall know that I am the Lord when I have wrought with you for my name's sake, not according to your wicked ways, nor according to your corrupt doings, O ye house of Israel, saith the Lord God.

45 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

46 Son of man, set thy face toward the south, and drop thy word toward the south, and prophesy against the forest of the south field;

47 And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the Lord; Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.

48 And all flesh shall see that I the Lord have kindled it: it shall not be quenched.

49 Then said I, Ah Lord God! they say of me, Doth he not speak parables?

21 And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Son of man, set thy face toward Jerusalem, and drop thy word toward the holy places, and prophesy against the land of Israel,

And say to the land of Israel, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I am against thee, and will draw forth my sword out of his sheath, and will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked.

Seeing then that I will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked, therefore shall my sword go forth out of his sheath against all flesh from the south to the north:

That all flesh may know that I the Lord have drawn forth my sword out of his sheath: it shall not return any more.

Sigh therefore, thou son of man, with the breaking of thy loins; and with bitterness sigh before their eyes.

And it shall be, when they say unto thee, Wherefore sighest thou? that thou shalt answer, For the tidings; because it cometh: and every heart shall melt, and all hands shall be feeble, and every spirit shall faint, and all knees shall be weak as water: behold, it cometh, and shall be brought to pass, saith the Lord God.

Again the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus saith the Lord; Say, A sword, a sword is sharpened, and also furbished:

10 It is sharpened to make a sore slaughter; it is furbished that it may glitter: should we then make mirth? it contemneth the rod of my son, as every tree.

11 And he hath given it to be furbished, that it may be handled: this sword is sharpened, and it is furbished, to give it into the hand of the slayer.

12 Cry and howl, son of man: for it shall be upon my people, it shall be upon all the princes of Israel: terrors by reason of the sword shall be upon my people: smite therefore upon thy thigh.

13 Because it is a trial, and what if the sword contemn even the rod? it shall be no more, saith the Lord God.

14 Thou therefore, son of man, prophesy, and smite thine hands together. and let the sword be doubled the third time, the sword of the slain: it is the sword of the great men that are slain, which entereth into their privy chambers.

15 I have set the point of the sword against all their gates, that their heart may faint, and their ruins be multiplied: ah! it is made bright, it is wrapped up for the slaughter.

16 Go thee one way or other, either on the right hand, or on the left, whithersoever thy face is set.

17 I will also smite mine hands together, and I will cause my fury to rest: I the Lord have said it.

18 The word of the Lord came unto me again, saying,

19 Also, thou son of man, appoint thee two ways, that the sword of the king of Babylon may come: both twain shall come forth out of one land: and choose thou a place, choose it at the head of the way to the city.

20 Appoint a way, that the sword may come to Rabbath of the Ammonites, and to Judah in Jerusalem the defenced.

21 For the king of Babylon stood at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use divination: he made his arrows bright, he consulted with images, he looked in the liver.

22 At his right hand was the divination for Jerusalem, to appoint captains, to open the mouth in the slaughter, to lift up the voice with shouting, to appoint battering rams against the gates, to cast a mount, and to build a fort.

23 And it shall be unto them as a false divination in their sight, to them that have sworn oaths: but he will call to remembrance the iniquity, that they may be taken.

24 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Because ye have made your iniquity to be remembered, in that your transgressions are discovered, so that in all your doings your sins do appear; because, I say, that ye are come to remembrance, ye shall be taken with the hand.

25 And thou, profane wicked prince of Israel, whose day is come, when iniquity shall have an end,

26 Thus saith the Lord God; Remove the diadem, and take off the crown: this shall not be the same: exalt him that is low, and abase him that is high.

27 I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and I will give it him.

28 And thou, son of man, prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord God concerning the Ammonites, and concerning their reproach; even say thou, The sword, the sword is drawn: for the slaughter it is furbished, to consume because of the glittering:

29 Whiles they see vanity unto thee, whiles they divine a lie unto thee, to bring thee upon the necks of them that are slain, of the wicked, whose day is come, when their iniquity shall have an end.

30 Shall I cause it to return into his sheath? I will judge thee in the place where thou wast created, in the land of thy nativity.

31 And I will pour out mine indignation upon thee, I will blow against thee in the fire of my wrath, and deliver thee into the hand of brutish men, and skilful to destroy.

32 Thou shalt be for fuel to the fire; thy blood shall be in the midst of the land; thou shalt be no more remembered: for I the Lord have spoken it.

22 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Now, thou son of man, wilt thou judge, wilt thou judge the bloody city? yea, thou shalt shew her all her abominations.

Then say thou, Thus saith the Lord God, The city sheddeth blood in the midst of it, that her time may come, and maketh idols against herself to defile herself.

Thou art become guilty in thy blood that thou hast shed; and hast defiled thyself in thine idols which thou hast made; and thou hast caused thy days to draw near, and art come even unto thy years: therefore have I made thee a reproach unto the heathen, and a mocking to all countries.

Those that be near, and those that be far from thee, shall mock thee, which art infamous and much vexed.

Behold, the princes of Israel, every one were in thee to their power to shed blood.

In thee have they set light by father and mother: in the midst of thee have they dealt by oppression with the stranger: in thee have they vexed the fatherless and the widow.

Thou hast despised mine holy things, and hast profaned my sabbaths.

In thee are men that carry tales to shed blood: and in thee they eat upon the mountains: in the midst of thee they commit lewdness.

10 In thee have they discovered their fathers' nakedness: in thee have they humbled her that was set apart for pollution.

11 And one hath committed abomination with his neighbour's wife; and another hath lewdly defiled his daughter in law; and another in thee hath humbled his sister, his father's daughter.

12 In thee have they taken gifts to shed blood; thou hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbours by extortion, and hast forgotten me, saith the Lord God.

13 Behold, therefore I have smitten mine hand at thy dishonest gain which thou hast made, and at thy blood which hath been in the midst of thee.

14 Can thine heart endure, or can thine hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with thee? I the Lord have spoken it, and will do it.

15 And I will scatter thee among the heathen, and disperse thee in the countries, and will consume thy filthiness out of thee.

16 And thou shalt take thine inheritance in thyself in the sight of the heathen, and thou shalt know that I am the Lord.

17 And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

18 Son of man, the house of Israel is to me become dross: all they are brass, and tin, and iron, and lead, in the midst of the furnace; they are even the dross of silver.

19 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Because ye are all become dross, behold, therefore I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem.

20 As they gather silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin, into the midst of the furnace, to blow the fire upon it, to melt it; so will I gather you in mine anger and in my fury, and I will leave you there, and melt you.

21 Yea, I will gather you, and blow upon you in the fire of my wrath, and ye shall be melted in the midst therof.

22 As silver is melted in the midst of the furnace, so shall ye be melted in the midst thereof; and ye shall know that I the Lord have poured out my fury upon you.

23 And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

24 Son of man, say unto her, Thou art the land that is not cleansed, nor rained upon in the day of indignation.

25 There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken the treasure and precious things; they have made her many widows in the midst thereof.

26 Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.

27 Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to get dishonest gain.

28 And her prophets have daubed them with untempered morter, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord God, when the Lord hath not spoken.

29 The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery, and have vexed the poor and needy: yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully.

30 And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.

31 Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord God.

23 The word of the Lord came again unto me, saying,

Son of man, there were two women, the daughters of one mother:

And they committed whoredoms in Egypt; they committed whoredoms in their youth: there were their breasts pressed, and there they bruised the teats of their virginity.

And the names of them were Aholah the elder, and Aholibah her sister: and they were mine, and they bare sons and daughters. Thus were their names; Samaria is Aholah, and Jerusalem Aholibah.

And Aholah played the harlot when she was mine; and she doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians her neighbours,

Which were clothed with blue, captains and rulers, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding upon horses.

Thus she committed her whoredoms with them, with all them that were the chosen men of Assyria, and with all on whom she doted: with all their idols she defiled herself.

Neither left she her whoredoms brought from Egypt: for in her youth they lay with her, and they bruised the breasts of her virginity, and poured their whoredom upon her.

Wherefore I have delivered her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians, upon whom she doted.

10 These discovered her nakedness: they took her sons and her daughters, and slew her with the sword: and she became famous among women; for they had executed judgment upon her.

11 And when her sister Aholibah saw this, she was more corrupt in her inordinate love than she, and in her whoredoms more than her sister in her whoredoms.

12 She doted upon the Assyrians her neighbours, captains and rulers clothed most gorgeously, horsemen riding upon horses, all of them desirable young men.

13 Then I saw that she was defiled, that they took both one way,

14 And that she increased her whoredoms: for when she saw men pourtrayed upon the wall, the images of the Chaldeans pourtrayed with vermilion,

15 Girded with girdles upon their loins, exceeding in dyed attire upon their heads, all of them princes to look to, after the manner of the Babylonians of Chaldea, the land of their nativity:

16 And as soon as she saw them with her eyes, she doted upon them, and sent messengers unto them into Chaldea.

17 And the Babylonians came to her into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their whoredom, and she was polluted with them, and her mind was alienated from them.

18 So she discovered her whoredoms, and discovered her nakedness: then my mind was alienated from her, like as my mind was alienated from her sister.

19 Yet she multiplied her whoredoms, in calling to remembrance the days of her youth, wherein she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt.

20 For she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and whose issue is like the issue of horses.

21 Thus thou calledst to remembrance the lewdness of thy youth, in bruising thy teats by the Egyptians for the paps of thy youth.

22 Therefore, O Aholibah, thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will raise up thy lovers against thee, from whom thy mind is alienated, and I will bring them against thee on every side;

23 The Babylonians, and all the Chaldeans, Pekod, and Shoa, and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them: all of them desirable young men, captains and rulers, great lords and renowned, all of them riding upon horses.

24 And they shall come against thee with chariots, wagons, and wheels, and with an assembly of people, which shall set against thee buckler and shield and helmet round about: and I will set judgment before them, and they shall judge thee according to their judgments.

25 And I will set my jealousy against thee, and they shall deal furiously with thee: they shall take away thy nose and thine ears; and thy remnant shall fall by the sword: they shall take thy sons and thy daughters; and thy residue shall be devoured by the fire.

26 They shall also strip thee out of thy clothes, and take away thy fair jewels.

27 Thus will I make thy lewdness to cease from thee, and thy whoredom brought from the land of Egypt: so that thou shalt not lift up thine eyes unto them, nor remember Egypt any more.

28 For thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will deliver thee into the hand of them whom thou hatest, into the hand of them from whom thy mind is alienated:

29 And they shall deal with thee hatefully, and shall take away all thy labour, and shall leave thee naked and bare: and the nakedness of thy whoredoms shall be discovered, both thy lewdness and thy whoredoms.

30 I will do these things unto thee, because thou hast gone a whoring after the heathen, and because thou art polluted with their idols.

31 Thou hast walked in the way of thy sister; therefore will I give her cup into thine hand.

32 Thus saith the Lord God; Thou shalt drink of thy sister's cup deep and large: thou shalt be laughed to scorn and had in derision; it containeth much.

33 Thou shalt be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of astonishment and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria.

34 Thou shalt even drink it and suck it out, and thou shalt break the sherds thereof, and pluck off thine own breasts: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord God.

35 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Because thou hast forgotten me, and cast me behind thy back, therefore bear thou also thy lewdness and thy whoredoms.

36 The Lord said moreover unto me; Son of man, wilt thou judge Aholah and Aholibah? yea, declare unto them their abominations;

37 That they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands, and with their idols have they committed adultery, and have also caused their sons, whom they bare unto me, to pass for them through the fire, to devour them.

38 Moreover this they have done unto me: they have defiled my sanctuary in the same day, and have profaned my sabbaths.

39 For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it; and, lo, thus have they done in the midst of mine house.

40 And furthermore, that ye have sent for men to come from far, unto whom a messenger was sent; and, lo, they came: for whom thou didst wash thyself, paintedst thy eyes, and deckedst thyself with ornaments,

41 And satest upon a stately bed, and a table prepared before it, whereupon thou hast set mine incense and mine oil.

42 And a voice of a multitude being at ease was with her: and with the men of the common sort were brought Sabeans from the wilderness, which put bracelets upon their hands, and beautiful crowns upon their heads.

43 Then said I unto her that was old in adulteries, Will they now commit whoredoms with her, and she with them?

44 Yet they went in unto her, as they go in unto a woman that playeth the harlot: so went they in unto Aholah and unto Aholibah, the lewd women.

45 And the righteous men, they shall judge them after the manner of adulteresses, and after the manner of women that shed blood; because they are adulteresses, and blood is in their hands.

46 For thus saith the Lord God; I will bring up a company upon them, and will give them to be removed and spoiled.

47 And the company shall stone them with stones, and dispatch them with their swords; they shall slay their sons and their daughters, and burn up their houses with fire.

48 Thus will I cause lewdness to cease out of the land, that all women may be taught not to do after your lewdness.

49 And they shall recompense your lewdness upon you, and ye shall bear the sins of your idols: and ye shall know that I am the Lord God.

24 Again in the ninth year, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Son of man, write thee the name of the day, even of this same day: the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem this same day.

And utter a parable unto the rebellious house, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Set on a pot, set it on, and also pour water into it:

Gather the pieces thereof into it, even every good piece, the thigh, and the shoulder; fill it with the choice bones.

Take the choice of the flock, and burn also the bones under it, and make it boil well, and let them seethe the bones of it therein.

Wherefore thus saith the Lord God; Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose scum is therein, and whose scum is not gone out of it! bring it out piece by piece; let no lot fall upon it.

For her blood is in the midst of her; she set it upon the top of a rock; she poured it not upon the ground, to cover it with dust;

That it might cause fury to come up to take vengeance; I have set her blood upon the top of a rock, that it should not be covered.

Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Woe to the bloody city! I will even make the pile for fire great.

10 Heap on wood, kindle the fire, consume the flesh, and spice it well, and let the bones be burned.

11 Then set it empty upon the coals thereof, that the brass of it may be hot, and may burn, and that the filthiness of it may be molten in it, that the scum of it may be consumed.

12 She hath wearied herself with lies, and her great scum went not forth out of her: her scum shall be in the fire.

13 In thy filthiness is lewdness: because I have purged thee, and thou wast not purged, thou shalt not be purged from thy filthiness any more, till I have caused my fury to rest upon thee.

14 I the Lord have spoken it: it shall come to pass, and I will do it; I will not go back, neither will I spare, neither will I repent; according to thy ways, and according to thy doings, shall they judge thee, saith the Lord God.

15 Also the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

16 Son of man, behold, I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes with a stroke: yet neither shalt thou mourn nor weep, neither shall thy tears run down.

17 Forbear to cry, make no mourning for the dead, bind the tire of thine head upon thee, and put on thy shoes upon thy feet, and cover not thy lips, and eat not the bread of men.

18 So I spake unto the people in the morning: and at even my wife died; and I did in the morning as I was commanded.

19 And the people said unto me, Wilt thou not tell us what these things are to us, that thou doest so?

20 Then I answered them, The word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

21 Speak unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the excellency of your strength, the desire of your eyes, and that which your soul pitieth; and your sons and your daughters whom ye have left shall fall by the sword.

22 And ye shall do as I have done: ye shall not cover your lips, nor eat the bread of men.

23 And your tires shall be upon your heads, and your shoes upon your feet: ye shall not mourn nor weep; but ye shall pine away for your iniquities, and mourn one toward another.

24 Thus Ezekiel is unto you a sign: according to all that he hath done shall ye do: and when this cometh, ye shall know that I am the Lord God.

25 Also, thou son of man, shall it not be in the day when I take from them their strength, the joy of their glory, the desire of their eyes, and that whereupon they set their minds, their sons and their daughters,

26 That he that escapeth in that day shall come unto thee, to cause thee to hear it with thine ears?

27 In that day shall thy mouth be opened to him which is escaped, and thou shalt speak, and be no more dumb: and thou shalt be a sign unto them; and they shall know that I am the Lord.

25 The word of the Lord came again unto me, saying,

Son of man, set thy face against the Ammonites, and prophesy against them;

And say unto the Ammonites, Hear the word of the Lord God; Thus saith the Lord God; Because thou saidst, Aha, against my sanctuary, when it was profaned; and against the land of Israel, when it was desolate; and against the house of Judah, when they went into captivity;

Behold, therefore I will deliver thee to the men of the east for a possession, and they shall set their palaces in thee, and make their dwellings in thee: they shall eat thy fruit, and they shall drink thy milk.

And I will make Rabbah a stable for camels, and the Ammonites a couching place for flocks: and ye shall know that I am the Lord.

For thus saith the Lord God; Because thou hast clapped thine hands, and stamped with the feet, and rejoiced in heart with all thy despite against the land of Israel;

Behold, therefore I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and will deliver thee for a spoil to the heathen; and I will cut thee off from the people, and I will cause thee to perish out of the countries: I will destroy thee; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord.

Thus saith the Lord God; Because that Moab and Seir do say, Behold, the house of Judah is like unto all the heathen;

Therefore, behold, I will open the side of Moab from the cities, from his cities which are on his frontiers, the glory of the country, Bethjeshimoth, Baalmeon, and Kiriathaim,

10 Unto the men of the east with the Ammonites, and will give them in possession, that the Ammonites may not be remembered among the nations.

11 And I will execute judgments upon Moab; and they shall know that I am the Lord.

12 Thus saith the Lord God; Because that Edom hath dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and hath greatly offended, and revenged himself upon them;

13 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; I will also stretch out mine hand upon Edom, and will cut off man and beast from it; and I will make it desolate from Teman; and they of Dedan shall fall by the sword.

14 And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom by the hand of my people Israel: and they shall do in Edom according to mine anger and according to my fury; and they shall know my vengeance, saith the Lord God.

15 Thus saith the Lord God; Because the Philistines have dealt by revenge, and have taken vengeance with a despiteful heart, to destroy it for the old hatred;

16 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will stretch out mine hand upon the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethims, and destroy the remnant of the sea coast.

17 And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them.

26 And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the first day of the month, that the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Son of man, because that Tyrus hath said against Jerusalem, Aha, she is broken that was the gates of the people: she is turned unto me: I shall be replenished, now she is laid waste:

Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against thee, O Tyrus, and will cause many nations to come up against thee, as the sea causeth his waves to come up.

And they shall destroy the walls of Tyrus, and break down her towers: I will also scrape her dust from her, and make her like the top of a rock.

It shall be a place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord God: and it shall become a spoil to the nations.

And her daughters which are in the field shall be slain by the sword; and they shall know that I am the Lord.

For thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will bring upon Tyrus Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, a king of kings, from the north, with horses, and with chariots, and with horsemen, and companies, and much people.

He shall slay with the sword thy daughters in the field: and he shall make a fort against thee, and cast a mount against thee, and lift up the buckler against thee.

And he shall set engines of war against thy walls, and with his axes he shall break down thy towers.

10 By reason of the abundance of his horses their dust shall cover thee: thy walls shall shake at the noise of the horsemen, and of the wheels, and of the chariots, when he shall enter into thy gates, as men enter into a city wherein is made a breach.

11 With the hoofs of his horses shall he tread down all thy streets: he shall slay thy people by the sword, and thy strong garrisons shall go down to the ground.

12 And they shall make a spoil of thy riches, and make a prey of thy merchandise: and they shall break down thy walls, and destroy thy pleasant houses: and they shall lay thy stones and thy timber and thy dust in the midst of the water.

13 And I will cause the noise of thy songs to cease; and the sound of thy harps shall be no more heard.

14 And I will make thee like the top of a rock: thou shalt be a place to spread nets upon; thou shalt be built no more: for I the Lord have spoken it, saith the Lord God.

15 Thus saith the Lord God to Tyrus; Shall not the isles shake at the sound of thy fall, when the wounded cry, when the slaughter is made in the midst of thee?

16 Then all the princes of the sea shall come down from their thrones, and lay away their robes, and put off their broidered garments: they shall clothe themselves with trembling; they shall sit upon the ground, and shall tremble at every moment, and be astonished at thee.

17 And they shall take up a lamentation for thee, and say to thee, How art thou destroyed, that wast inhabited of seafaring men, the renowned city, which wast strong in the sea, she and her inhabitants, which cause their terror to be on all that haunt it!

18 Now shall the isles tremble in the day of thy fall; yea, the isles that are in the sea shall be troubled at thy departure.

19 For thus saith the Lord God; When I shall make thee a desolate city, like the cities that are not inhabited; when I shall bring up the deep upon thee, and great waters shall cover thee;

20 When I shall bring thee down with them that descend into the pit, with the people of old time, and shall set thee in the low parts of the earth, in places desolate of old, with them that go down to the pit, that thou be not inhabited; and I shall set glory in the land of the living;

21 I will make thee a terror, and thou shalt be no more: though thou be sought for, yet shalt thou never be found again, saith the Lord God.

27 The word of the Lord came again unto me, saying,

Now, thou son of man, take up a lamentation for Tyrus;

And say unto Tyrus, O thou that art situate at the entry of the sea, which art a merchant of the people for many isles, Thus saith the Lord God; O Tyrus, thou hast said, I am of perfect beauty.

Thy borders are in the midst of the seas, thy builders have perfected thy beauty.

They have made all thy ship boards of fir trees of Senir: they have taken cedars from Lebanon to make masts for thee.

Of the oaks of Bashan have they made thine oars; the company of the Ashurites have made thy benches of ivory, brought out of the isles of Chittim.

Fine linen with broidered work from Egypt was that which thou spreadest forth to be thy sail; blue and purple from the isles of Elishah was that which covered thee.

The inhabitants of Zidon and Arvad were thy mariners: thy wise men, O Tyrus, that were in thee, were thy pilots.

The ancients of Gebal and the wise men thereof were in thee thy calkers: all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in thee to occupy thy merchandise.

10 They of Persia and of Lud and of Phut were in thine army, thy men of war: they hanged the shield and helmet in thee; they set forth thy comeliness.

11 The men of Arvad with thine army were upon thy walls round about, and the Gammadims were in thy towers: they hanged their shields upon thy walls round about; they have made thy beauty perfect.

12 Tarshish was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of all kind of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded in thy fairs.

13 Javan, Tubal, and Meshech, they were thy merchants: they traded the persons of men and vessels of brass in thy market.

14 They of the house of Togarmah traded in thy fairs with horses and horsemen and mules.

15 The men of Dedan were thy merchants; many isles were the merchandise of thine hand: they brought thee for a present horns of ivory and ebony.

16 Syria was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of the wares of thy making: they occupied in thy fairs with emeralds, purple, and broidered work, and fine linen, and coral, and agate.

17 Judah, and the land of Israel, they were thy merchants: they traded in thy market wheat of Minnith, and Pannag, and honey, and oil, and balm.

18 Damascus was thy merchant in the multitude of the wares of thy making, for the multitude of all riches; in the wine of Helbon, and white wool.

19 Dan also and Javan going to and fro occupied in thy fairs: bright iron, cassia, and calamus, were in thy market.

20 Dedan was thy merchant in precious clothes for chariots.

21 Arabia, and all the princes of Kedar, they occupied with thee in lambs, and rams, and goats: in these were they thy merchants.

22 The merchants of Sheba and Raamah, they were thy merchants: they occupied in thy fairs with chief of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold.

23 Haran, and Canneh, and Eden, the merchants of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad, were thy merchants.

24 These were thy merchants in all sorts of things, in blue clothes, and broidered work, and in chests of rich apparel, bound with cords, and made of cedar, among thy merchandise.

25 The ships of Tarshish did sing of thee in thy market: and thou wast replenished, and made very glorious in the midst of the seas.

26 Thy rowers have brought thee into great waters: the east wind hath broken thee in the midst of the seas.

27 Thy riches, and thy fairs, thy merchandise, thy mariners, and thy pilots, thy calkers, and the occupiers of thy merchandise, and all thy men of war, that are in thee, and in all thy company which is in the midst of thee, shall fall into the midst of the seas in the day of thy ruin.

28 The suburbs shall shake at the sound of the cry of thy pilots.

29 And all that handle the oar, the mariners, and all the pilots of the sea, shall come down from their ships, they shall stand upon the land;

30 And shall cause their voice to be heard against thee, and shall cry bitterly, and shall cast up dust upon their heads, they shall wallow themselves in the ashes:

31 And they shall make themselves utterly bald for thee, and gird them with sackcloth, and they shall weep for thee with bitterness of heart and bitter wailing.

32 And in their wailing they shall take up a lamentation for thee, and lament over thee, saying, What city is like Tyrus, like the destroyed in the midst of the sea?

33 When thy wares went forth out of the seas, thou filledst many people; thou didst enrich the kings of the earth with the multitude of thy riches and of thy merchandise.

34 In the time when thou shalt be broken by the seas in the depths of the waters thy merchandise and all thy company in the midst of thee shall fall.

35 All the inhabitants of the isles shall be astonished at thee, and their kings shall be sore afraid, they shall be troubled in their countenance.

36 The merchants among the people shall hiss at thee; thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt be any more.

28 The word of the Lord came again unto me, saying,

Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord God; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God:

Behold, thou art wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that they can hide from thee:

With thy wisdom and with thine understanding thou hast gotten thee riches, and hast gotten gold and silver into thy treasures:

By thy great wisdom and by thy traffick hast thou increased thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:

Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Because thou hast set thine heart as the heart of God;

Behold, therefore I will bring strangers upon thee, the terrible of the nations: and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of thy wisdom, and they shall defile thy brightness.

They shall bring thee down to the pit, and thou shalt die the deaths of them that are slain in the midst of the seas.

Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee, I am God? but thou shalt be a man, and no God, in the hand of him that slayeth thee.

10 Thou shalt die the deaths of the uncircumcised by the hand of strangers: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord God.

11 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord God; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.

13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.

17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

18 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.

19 All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.

20 Again the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

21 Son of man, set thy face against Zidon, and prophesy against it,

22 And say, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against thee, O Zidon; and I will be glorified in the midst of thee: and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall have executed judgments in her, and shall be sanctified in her.

23 For I will send into her pestilence, and blood into her streets; and the wounded shall be judged in the midst of her by the sword upon her on every side; and they shall know that I am the Lord.

24 And there shall be no more a pricking brier unto the house of Israel, nor any grieving thorn of all that are round about them, that despised them; and they shall know that I am the Lord God.

25 Thus saith the Lord God; When I shall have gathered the house of Israel from the people among whom they are scattered, and shall be sanctified in them in the sight of the heathen, then shall they dwell in their land that I have given to my servant Jacob.

26 And they shall dwell safely therein, and shall build houses, and plant vineyards; yea, they shall dwell with confidence, when I have executed judgments upon all those that despise them round about them; and they shall know that I am the Lord their God.

29 In the tenth year, in the tenth month, in the twelfth day of the month, the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Son of man, set thy face against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and prophesy against him, and against all Egypt:

Speak, and say, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lieth in the midst of his rivers, which hath said, My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself.

But I will put hooks in thy jaws, and I will cause the fish of thy rivers to stick unto thy scales, and I will bring thee up out of the midst of thy rivers, and all the fish of thy rivers shall stick unto thy scales.

And I will leave thee thrown into the wilderness, thee and all the fish of thy rivers: thou shalt fall upon the open fields; thou shalt not be brought together, nor gathered: I have given thee for meat to the beasts of the field and to the fowls of the heaven.

And all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am the Lord, because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel.

When they took hold of thee by thy hand, thou didst break, and rend all their shoulder: and when they leaned upon thee, thou brakest, and madest all their loins to be at a stand.

Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will bring a sword upon thee, and cut off man and beast out of thee.

And the land of Egypt shall be desolate and waste; and they shall know that I am the Lord: because he hath said, The river is mine, and I have made it.

10 Behold, therefore I am against thee, and against thy rivers, and I will make the land of Egypt utterly waste and desolate, from the tower of Syene even unto the border of Ethiopia.

11 No foot of man shall pass through it, nor foot of beast shall pass through it, neither shall it be inhabited forty years.

12 And I will make the land of Egypt desolate in the midst of the countries that are desolate, and her cities among the cities that are laid waste shall be desolate forty years: and I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and will disperse them through the countries.

13 Yet thus saith the Lord God; At the end of forty years will I gather the Egyptians from the people whither they were scattered:

14 And I will bring again the captivity of Egypt, and will cause them to return into the land of Pathros, into the land of their habitation; and they shall be there a base kingdom.

15 It shall be the basest of the kingdoms; neither shall it exalt itself any more above the nations: for I will diminish them, that they shall no more rule over the nations.

16 And it shall be no more the confidence of the house of Israel, which bringeth their iniquity to remembrance, when they shall look after them: but they shall know that I am the Lord God.

17 And it came to pass in the seven and twentieth year, in the first month, in the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

18 Son of man, Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon caused his army to serve a great service against Tyrus: every head was made bald, and every shoulder was peeled: yet had he no wages, nor his army, for Tyrus, for the service that he had served against it:

19 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will give the land of Egypt unto Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall take her multitude, and take her spoil, and take her prey; and it shall be the wages for his army.

20 I have given him the land of Egypt for his labour wherewith he served against it, because they wrought for me, saith the Lord God.

21 In that day will I cause the horn of the house of Israel to bud forth, and I will give thee the opening of the mouth in the midst of them; and they shall know that I am the Lord.

30 The word of the Lord came again unto me, saying,

Son of man, prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord God; Howl ye, Woe worth the day!

For the day is near, even the day of the Lord is near, a cloudy day; it shall be the time of the heathen.

And the sword shall come upon Egypt, and great pain shall be in Ethiopia, when the slain shall fall in Egypt, and they shall take away her multitude, and her foundations shall be broken down.

Ethiopia, and Libya, and Lydia, and all the mingled people, and Chub, and the men of the land that is in league, shall fall with them by the sword.

Thus saith the Lord; They also that uphold Egypt shall fall; and the pride of her power shall come down: from the tower of Syene shall they fall in it by the sword, saith the Lord God.

And they shall be desolate in the midst of the countries that are desolate, and her cities shall be in the midst of the cities that are wasted.

And they shall know that I am the Lord, when I have set a fire in Egypt, and when all her helpers shall be destroyed.

In that day shall messengers go forth from me in ships to make the careless Ethiopians afraid, and great pain shall come upon them, as in the day of Egypt: for, lo, it cometh.

10 Thus saith the Lord God; I will also make the multitude of Egypt to cease by the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon.

11 He and his people with him, the terrible of the nations, shall be brought to destroy the land: and they shall draw their swords against Egypt, and fill the land with the slain.

12 And I will make the rivers dry, and sell the land into the hand of the wicked: and I will make the land waste, and all that is therein, by the hand of strangers: I the Lord have spoken it.

13 Thus saith the Lord God; I will also destroy the idols, and I will cause their images to cease out of Noph; and there shall be no more a prince of the land of Egypt: and I will put a fear in the land of Egypt.

14 And I will make Pathros desolate, and will set fire in Zoan, and will execute judgments in No.

15 And I will pour my fury upon Sin, the strength of Egypt; and I will cut off the multitude of No.

16 And I will set fire in Egypt: Sin shall have great pain, and No shall be rent asunder, and Noph shall have distresses daily.

17 The young men of Aven and of Pibeseth shall fall by the sword: and these cities shall go into captivity.

18 At Tehaphnehes also the day shall be darkened, when I shall break there the yokes of Egypt: and the pomp of her strength shall cease in her: as for her, a cloud shall cover her, and her daughters shall go into captivity.

19 Thus will I execute judgments in Egypt: and they shall know that I am the Lord.

20 And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the first month, in the seventh day of the month, that the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

21 Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and, lo, it shall not be bound up to be healed, to put a roller to bind it, to make it strong to hold the sword.

22 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and will break his arms, the strong, and that which was broken; and I will cause the sword to fall out of his hand.

23 And I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and will disperse them through the countries.

24 And I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and put my sword in his hand: but I will break Pharaoh's arms, and he shall groan before him with the groanings of a deadly wounded man.

25 But I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and the arms of Pharaoh shall fall down; and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall put my sword into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall stretch it out upon the land of Egypt.

26 And I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and disperse them among the countries; and they shall know that I am the Lord.

31 And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the third month, in the first day of the month, that the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Son of man, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, and to his multitude; Whom art thou like in thy greatness?

Behold, the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon with fair branches, and with a shadowing shroud, and of an high stature; and his top was among the thick boughs.

The waters made him great, the deep set him up on high with her rivers running round about his plants, and sent her little rivers unto all the trees of the field.

Therefore his height was exalted above all the trees of the field, and his boughs were multiplied, and his branches became long because of the multitude of waters, when he shot forth.

All the fowls of heaven made their nests in his boughs, and under his branches did all the beasts of the field bring forth their young, and under his shadow dwelt all great nations.

Thus was he fair in his greatness, in the length of his branches: for his root was by great waters.

The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the fir trees were not like his boughs, and the chestnut trees were not like his branches; nor any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty.

I have made him fair by the multitude of his branches: so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, envied him.

10 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Because thou hast lifted up thyself in height, and he hath shot up his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height;

11 I have therefore delivered him into the hand of the mighty one of the heathen; he shall surely deal with him: I have driven him out for his wickedness.

12 And strangers, the terrible of the nations, have cut him off, and have left him: upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen, and his boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the people of the earth are gone down from his shadow, and have left him.

13 Upon his ruin shall all the fowls of the heaven remain, and all the beasts of the field shall be upon his branches:

14 To the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves for their height, neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs, neither their trees stand up in their height, all that drink water: for they are all delivered unto death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.

15 Thus saith the Lord God; In the day when he went down to the grave I caused a mourning: I covered the deep for him, and I restrained the floods thereof, and the great waters were stayed: and I caused Lebanon to mourn for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him.

16 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth.

17 They also went down into hell with him unto them that be slain with the sword; and they that were his arm, that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen.

18 To whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? yet shalt thou be brought down with the trees of Eden unto the nether parts of the earth: thou shalt lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord God.

32 And it came to pass in the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, in the first day of the month, that the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Son of man, take up a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say unto him, Thou art like a young lion of the nations, and thou art as a whale in the seas: and thou camest forth with thy rivers, and troubledst the waters with thy feet, and fouledst their rivers.

Thus saith the Lord God; I will therefore spread out my net over thee with a company of many people; and they shall bring thee up in my net.

Then will I leave thee upon the land, I will cast thee forth upon the open field, and will cause all the fowls of the heaven to remain upon thee, and I will fill the beasts of the whole earth with thee.

And I will lay thy flesh upon the mountains, and fill the valleys with thy height.

I will also water with thy blood the land wherein thou swimmest, even to the mountains; and the rivers shall be full of thee.

And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light.

All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord God.

I will also vex the hearts of many people, when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations, into the countries which thou hast not known.

10 Yea, I will make many people amazed at thee, and their kings shall be horribly afraid for thee, when I shall brandish my sword before them; and they shall tremble at every moment, every man for his own life, in the day of thy fall.

11 For thus saith the Lord God; The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon thee.

12 By the swords of the mighty will I cause thy multitude to fall, the terrible of the nations, all of them: and they shall spoil the pomp of Egypt, and all the multitude thereof shall be destroyed.

13 I will destroy also all the beasts thereof from beside the great waters; neither shall the foot of man trouble them any more, nor the hoofs of beasts trouble them.

14 Then will I make their waters deep, and cause their rivers to run like oil, saith the Lord God.
