Prosperità effimera dei malvagi
73 (B)Salmo di Asaf.
Certo, Dio è buono verso Israele,
verso quelli che sono puri di cuore.
2 Ma quasi inciamparono i miei piedi;
poco mancò che i miei passi non scivolassero.
3 Poiché invidiavo i prepotenti,
vedendo la prosperità dei malvagi.
4 Poiché per loro non vi sono dolori,
il loro corpo è sano e ben nutrito[a].
5 Non sono tribolati come gli altri mortali,
né sono colpiti come gli altri uomini.
6 Perciò la superbia li adorna come una collana,
la violenza li avvolge come un manto.
7 Gli occhi escono loro fuori dalle orbite per il grasso;
dal cuor loro traboccano i cattivi pensieri.
8 Sbeffeggiano e malvagiamente progettano di opprimere;
parlano dall’alto in basso con arroganza.
9 Alzano la loro bocca fino al cielo,
e la loro lingua percorre la terra.
10 Perciò il popolo si volge dalla loro parte,
beve abbondantemente alla loro sorgente
11 e dice: «Com’è possibile che Dio sappia ogni cosa,
che vi sia conoscenza nell’Altissimo?»
12 Ecco, costoro sono empi;
eppure, tranquilli sempre, essi accrescono le loro ricchezze.
13 Invano dunque ho purificato il mio cuore
e ho lavato le mie mani nell’innocenza!
14 Poiché sono colpito ogni giorno
e il mio tormento si rinnova ogni mattina.
15 Se avessi detto: «Parlerò come loro»,
ecco, avrei tradito la stirpe dei tuoi figli.
16 Ho voluto riflettere per comprendere questo,
ma la cosa mi è parsa molto ardua,
17 finché non sono entrato nel santuario di Dio
e non ho considerato la fine di costoro.
18 Certo, tu li metti in luoghi sdrucciolevoli,
tu li fai cadere in rovina.
19 Come sono distrutti in un momento,
portati via, consumati in circostanze orribili!
20 Come avviene d’un sogno quando uno si sveglia,
così tu, Signore, quando ti desterai,
disprezzerai la loro vana apparenza.
21 Quando il mio cuore era amareggiato
e io mi sentivo trafitto internamente,
22 ero insensato e senza intelligenza;
io ero di fronte a te come una bestia.
23 Ma pure, io resto sempre con te;
tu mi hai preso per la mano destra;
24 mi guiderai con il tuo consiglio
e poi mi accoglierai nella gloria.
25 Chi ho io in cielo fuori di te?
E sulla terra non desidero che te.
26 La mia carne e il mio cuore possono venir meno,
ma Dio è la rocca del mio cuore e la mia parte di eredità, in eterno.
27 Poiché, ecco, quelli che si allontanano da te periranno;
tu distruggi chiunque ti tradisce e ti abbandona.
28 Ma quanto a me, il mio bene è stare unito a Dio;
io ho fatto del Signore Dio il mio rifugio,
per raccontare, o Dio, tutte le opere tue.
Supplica per il tempio distrutto

O Dio, perché ci hai respinti per sempre?
Perché arde l’ira tua contro il gregge del tuo pascolo?
2 Ricòrdati del tuo popolo che acquistasti nei tempi antichi,
che riscattasti perché fosse la tribù di tua proprietà;
ricòrdati del monte Sion, di cui hai fatto la tua dimora!
3 Dirigi i tuoi passi verso le rovine eterne;
il nemico ha tutto devastato nel tuo santuario.
4 I tuoi avversari hanno ruggito nel luogo delle tue assemblee;
vi hanno posto le loro insegne per emblemi.
5 Come chi agita in alto la scure
nel folto d’un bosco,
6 con l’ascia e con il martello,
hanno spezzato tutte le sculture della tua casa.
7 Hanno appiccato il fuoco al tuo santuario,
hanno abbattuto e profanato la dimora del tuo nome.
8 Hanno detto in cuor loro: «Distruggiamo tutto!»
Hanno arso tutti i luoghi delle assemblee divine nel paese.
9 Noi non vediamo più nessun segno;
non c’è più profeta, né chi tra noi sappia fino a quando…
10 Fino a quando, o Dio, ci oltraggerà l’avversario?
Il nemico disprezzerà il tuo nome per sempre?
11 Perché ritiri la tua mano, la tua destra?
Tirala fuori dal tuo seno, e distruggili!
12 Eppure Dio è nostro re dai tempi antichi,
colui che opera la salvezza sulla terra.
13 Tu, con la tua forza, dividesti il mare,
spezzasti la testa ai mostri marini sulle acque,
14 spezzasti la testa al leviatano[b],
lo dèsti in pasto al popolo del deserto.
15 Tu facesti sgorgare fonti e torrenti,
asciugasti fiumi perenni.
16 Tuo è il giorno, la notte pure è tua;
tu hai stabilito la luna e il sole.
17 Hai fissato tutti i confini della terra,
hai stabilito l’estate e l’inverno.
18 Ricòrdati che il nemico ha oltraggiato il Signore
e che un popolo stolto ha disprezzato il tuo nome.
19 Non abbandonare alle belve la vita della tua tortora,
non dimenticare per sempre il gregge dei tuoi poveri afflitti!
20 Abbi riguardo al patto,
poiché i luoghi tenebrosi della terra sono pieni di covi di violenza.
21 L’oppresso non se ne torni confuso;
fa’ che il misero e il povero lodino il tuo nome.
22 Ergiti, o Dio, difendi la tua causa!
Ricòrdati che lo stolto ti oltraggia tutto il giorno.
23 Non dimenticare il grido dei tuoi nemici,
lo strepito incessante di quelli che si innalzano contro di te.
Dio, giudice sovrano

Salmo di Asaf. Canto.
Noi ti lodiamo, o Dio, ti lodiamo;
quelli che invocano il tuo nome proclamano le tue meraviglie.
2 Quando verrà il tempo che avrò fissato,
io giudicherò con giustizia.
3 Si agiti la terra con tutti i suoi abitanti,
io ne rendo stabili le colonne. [Pausa]
4 Io dico agli orgogliosi: «Non siate superbi!»
E agli empi: «Non alzate la testa[c]!
5 Non alzate la vostra testa contro il cielo,
non parlate con il collo rigido!»
6 Poiché non è dall’oriente né dall’occidente,
né dal mezzogiorno che viene la possibilità d’innalzarsi,
7 ma è Dio che giudica;
egli abbassa l’uno e innalza l’altro.
8 Il Signore ha in mano una coppa di vino spumeggiante,
pieno di mistura.
Egli ne versa;
certo tutti gli empi della terra ne dovranno sorseggiare,
ne berranno fino alla feccia.
9 Ma io racconterò sempre queste cose,
salmeggerò al Dio di Giacobbe.
10 Stroncherò la potenza degli empi,
ma la potenza[d] dei giusti sarà accresciuta.
Trionfo della potenza di Dio

Dio è ben conosciuto in Giuda;
il suo nome è grande in Israele.
2 Il suo tabernacolo è in Salem[e],
e la sua dimora in Sion.
3 Qua egli ha spezzato le frecce dell’arco[f],
lo scudo, la spada e le armi da guerra. [Pausa]
4 Tremendo sei tu, o Potente,
quando ritorni dalle montagne della preda.
5 I valorosi sono stati spogliati,
hanno dormito il loro ultimo sonno,
tutti gli uomini prodi sono stati ridotti all’impotenza[g].
6 Alla tua minaccia, o Dio di Giacobbe,
carri e cavalli sono stati presi da torpore.
7 Tu, tu sei tremendo!
E chi può resistere davanti a te quando esplode la tua ira?
8 Dal cielo facesti udire la tua sentenza;
la terra ebbe paura e tacque,
9 quando Dio si alzò per giudicare,
per salvare tutti gli infelici della terra. [Pausa]
10 Anche il furore degli uomini ritornerà a tua lode;
ti cingerai degli ultimi avanzi dei loro furori.
11 Fate voti al Signore, al Dio vostro, e adempiteli;
tutti quelli che gli stanno attorno portino doni al Tremendo.
12 Egli stronca lo spirito dei potenti,
egli è tremendo per i re della terra.
I prodigi fatti da Dio nel passato

Salmo di Asaf.
La mia voce sale a Dio e io grido;
la mia voce sale a Dio ed egli mi porge l’orecchio.
2 Nel giorno della mia afflizione ho cercato il Signore;
la mia mano è stata tesa durante la notte senza stancarsi,
l’anima mia ha rifiutato di essere consolata.
3 Mi ricordo di Dio, e gemo;
medito, e il mio spirito è abbattuto. [Pausa]
4 Tu tieni desti gli occhi miei,
sono turbato e non posso parlare.
5 Ripenso ai giorni antichi,
agli anni da lungo tempo trascorsi.
6 Durante la notte mi ricordo dei miei canti;
medito, e il mio spirito si pone delle domande:
7 «Il Signore ci respinge forse per sempre?
Non mostrerà più la sua bontà?
8 La sua misericordia è venuta a mancare per sempre?
La sua parola è cessata per ogni generazione?
9 Dio ha forse dimenticato di avere pietà?
Ha egli soffocato nell’ira il suo amore?» [Pausa]
10 Ho detto: «La mia afflizione sta in questo:
che la destra dell’Altissimo è mutata[h]».
11 Io rievocherò i prodigi del Signore;
sì, ricorderò le tue meraviglie antiche,
12 mediterò su tutte le opere tue
e ripenserò alle tue gesta.
13 O Dio, le tue vie sono sante;
quale Dio è grande come il nostro Dio?
14 Tu sei il Dio che opera meraviglie;
tu hai fatto conoscere la tua forza tra i popoli.
15 Con il tuo braccio hai riscattato il tuo popolo,
i figli di Giacobbe e di Giuseppe. [Pausa]
16 Le acque ti videro, o Dio;
le acque ti videro e furono spaventate;
anche gli oceani tremarono.
17 Le nubi versarono diluvi d’acqua;
i cieli tuonarono;
e anche le tue saette guizzarono da ogni parte.
18 Il fragore dei tuoni era nel turbine;
i lampi illuminarono il mondo;
la terra fu scossa e tremò.
19 Tu apristi la tua via in mezzo al mare,
i tuoi sentieri in mezzo alle grandi acque
e le tue orme non furono visibili.
20 Tu guidasti il tuo popolo come un gregge,
per mano di Mosè e di Aaronne.
Fedeltà di Dio nella storia d’Israele
78 (G)Cantico di Asaf.
Ascolta, popolo mio, il mio insegnamento;
porgete orecchio alle parole della mia bocca!
2 Io aprirò la mia bocca per esprimere parabole,
esporrò i misteri dei tempi antichi[i].
3 Quel che abbiamo udito e conosciuto,
e che i nostri padri ci hanno raccontato,
4 non lo nasconderemo ai loro figli;
diremo alla generazione futura le lodi del Signore,
la sua potenza e le meraviglie che egli ha operate.
5 Egli stabilì una testimonianza in Giacobbe,
istituì una legge in Israele
e ordinò ai nostri padri
di farle conoscere ai loro figli,
6 perché fossero note alla generazione futura,
ai figli che sarebbero nati.
Questi le avrebbero così raccontate ai loro figli,
7 perché ponessero in Dio la loro speranza
e non dimenticassero le opere di Dio,
ma osservassero i suoi comandamenti.
8 Tutto ciò per non essere come i loro padri,
una generazione ostinata e ribelle,
una generazione dal cuore incostante,
il cui spirito non fu fedele a Dio.
9 I figli di Efraim, gente di guerra, buoni arcieri,
voltarono le spalle il dì della battaglia.
10 Non osservarono il patto di Dio
e rifiutarono di camminare secondo la sua legge;
11 dimenticarono le sue opere
e i prodigi che egli aveva mostrati loro.
12 Egli aveva compiuto meraviglie in presenza dei loro padri,
nel paese d’Egitto, nelle campagne di Soan.
13 Divise il mare, li fece passare
e fermò le acque come in un mucchio.
14 Di giorno li guidò con una nuvola
e tutta la notte con un fuoco fiammeggiante.
15 Spaccò le rocce nel deserto
e li dissetò abbondantemente,
come da sorgenti d’acque profonde.
16 Fece scaturire ruscelli dalla rupe,
fece sgorgare acque come fiumi.
17 Ma essi continuarono a peccare contro di lui,
a ribellarsi contro l’Altissimo, nel deserto.
18 Tentarono Dio in cuor loro,
chiedendo cibo secondo le proprie voglie.
19 Parlarono contro Dio, dicendo:
«Potrebbe Dio imbandirci una mensa nel deserto?
20 Ecco, egli percosse la roccia e ne sgorgarono acque,
ne strariparono torrenti;
potrebbe darci anche del pane
e provvedere di carne il suo popolo?»
21 Perciò il Signore, quando l’udì, si adirò aspramente
e un fuoco si accese contro Giacobbe;
l’ira sua si infuriò contro Israele,
22 perché non avevano creduto in Dio,
né avevano avuto fiducia nella sua salvezza.
23 Eppure egli comandò alle nuvole dall’alto,
aprì le porte del cielo,
24 fece piovere su di essi la manna per nutrimento
e diede loro il frumento del cielo.
25 Essi mangiarono il pane dei potenti[j];
egli mandò loro cibo a sazietà.
26 Scatenò in cielo il vento orientale
e con la sua potenza fece alzare il vento del mezzogiorno;
27 fece piovere su di loro carne come polvere,
uccelli alati, numerosi come sabbia del mare;
28 li fece cadere in mezzo al loro accampamento,
intorno alle loro tende.
29 Così essi mangiarono, furono saziati
e Dio mandò loro quel che avevano desiderato.
30 Non era ancora stata soddisfatta la loro ingordigia,
avevano ancora il cibo in bocca,
31 quando l’ira di Dio si scatenò contro di loro,
uccise i più vigorosi e abbatté i giovani d’Israele.
32 Con tutto ciò peccarono ancora,
non prestando fede ai suoi prodigi.
33 Perciò egli consumò i loro giorni in un niente
e i loro anni con un terrore improvviso.
34 Quando li faceva perire, essi lo cercavano
e ritornavano desiderosi di ritrovare Dio;
35 e si ricordavano che Dio era la loro rocca,
che il Dio altissimo era il loro liberatore.
36 Essi però lo adulavano con la bocca
e gli mentivano con la lingua.
37 Il loro cuore non era sincero con lui
e non erano fedeli al suo patto.
38 Ma egli, che è pietoso, perdona l’iniquità
e non distrugge il peccatore.
Più volte trattenne la sua ira
e non lasciò divampare tutto il suo sdegno,
39 ricordando che essi erano carne,
un soffio che va e non ritorna.
40 Quante volte si ribellarono a lui nel deserto
e lo rattristarono in quella solitudine!
41 Ma ricominciarono a tentare Dio
e a provocare il Santo d’Israele.
42 Non si ricordarono più della sua mano,
del giorno in cui egli li liberò dal nemico,
43 quando operò i suoi miracoli in Egitto
e i suoi prodigi nelle campagne di Soan.
44 Egli mutò i loro fiumi e i loro ruscelli in sangue,
perché non vi potessero più bere.
45 Mandò contro di loro mosche velenose a divorarli
e rane a molestarli.
46 Diede il loro raccolto ai bruchi
e il frutto della loro fatica alle cavallette.
47 Distrusse le loro vigne con la grandine
e i loro sicomori con i grossi chicchi d’essa.
48 Abbandonò il loro bestiame alla grandine
e le loro greggi ai fulmini.
49 Scatenò su di loro il furore del suo sdegno,
ira, indignazione e tribolazione,
una moltitudine di messaggeri di sventure.
50 Diede sfogo alla sua ira;
non preservò dalla morte la loro anima,
ma abbandonò la loro vita alla peste.
51 Percosse tutti i primogeniti d’Egitto,
le primizie del vigore nelle tende di Cam;
52 ma fece partire il suo popolo come un gregge
e lo guidò attraverso il deserto come una mandria.
53 Li condusse sicuri e senza timore,
mentre il mare inghiottiva i loro nemici.
54 Li fece arrivare alla sua terra santa,
al monte che la sua destra aveva conquistato.
55 Scacciò le nazioni davanti a loro,
assegnò loro a sorte il territorio come eredità
e fece abitare le tribù d’Israele nelle tende di quelli.
56 Ma essi tentarono il Dio altissimo,
si ribellarono e non osservarono i suoi statuti.
57 Si sviarono e furono sleali come i loro padri;
si rivoltarono come un arco fallace;
58 lo provocarono a ira con i loro alti luoghi,
lo resero geloso con i loro idoli.
59 Dio udì, si adirò,
ed ebbe per Israele grande avversione,
60 abbandonò il tabernacolo di Silo,
la tenda in cui aveva abitato fra gli uomini;
61 lasciò condurre la sua forza in schiavitù
e lasciò cadere la sua gloria in mano al nemico.
62 Abbandonò il suo popolo alla spada
e si adirò contro la sua eredità.
63 Il fuoco consumò i loro giovani
e le loro vergini non ebbero canto nuziale.
64 I loro sacerdoti caddero di spada
e le loro vedove non fecero lamento.
65 Poi il Signore si risvegliò come dal sonno,
simile a un prode che grida eccitato dal vino.
66 Colpì i suoi nemici alle spalle,
li coprì di eterna vergogna.
67 Ripudiò la tenda di Giuseppe
e non scelse la tribù di Efraim;
68 ma elesse la tribù di Giuda,
il monte Sion che egli amava.
69 Costruì il suo tempio, simile a luoghi altissimi,
come la terra che egli ha fondata per sempre.
70 Scelse Davide, suo servo,
lo prese dagli ovili;
71 lo portò via alle pecore che allattavano,
per pascere Giacobbe, suo popolo, e Israele, sua eredità.
72 Ed egli si curò di loro con un cuore integro
e li guidò con mano sapiente.
Supplica in favore di Gerusalemme
79 (H)Salmo di Asaf.
O Dio, le nazioni sono entrate nella tua eredità,
hanno profanato il tuo santo tempio,
hanno ridotto Gerusalemme in un mucchio di rovine;
2 hanno dato i cadaveri dei tuoi servi in pasto agli uccelli del cielo,
la carne dei tuoi santi alle bestie della campagna.
3 Hanno sparso il loro sangue come acqua intorno a Gerusalemme
e non c’è stato alcuno che li seppellisse.
4 Noi siamo diventati oggetto di derisione per i nostri vicini,
oggetto di scherno e di derisione per quelli che ci circondano.
5 Fino a quando, Signore, sarai tu adirato?
La tua gelosia arderà come fuoco per sempre?
6 Riversa l’ira tua sulle nazioni che non ti conoscono
e sui regni che non invocano il tuo nome,
7 poiché hanno divorato Giacobbe
e hanno devastato la sua dimora.
8 Non ricordare a nostro danno le colpe dei nostri antenati;
affrèttati, ci vengano incontro le tue compassioni,
poiché siamo molto afflitti.
9 Soccorrici, o Dio della nostra salvezza,
per la gloria del tuo nome;
liberaci, e perdona i nostri peccati,
per amore del tuo nome.
10 Perché direbbero i popoli: «Dov’è il loro Dio?»
Si conosca tra le nazioni, sotto i nostri occhi,
la vendetta per il sangue dei tuoi servi, che è stato sparso.
11 Giunga fino a te il gemito dei prigionieri;
secondo la potenza del tuo braccio,
salva quelli che sono condannati a morte[k].
12 Restituisci ai nostri vicini sette volte tanto
l’oltraggio che ti hanno fatto, o Signore!
13 E noi, tuo popolo e gregge del tuo pascolo,
ti celebreremo in eterno,
proclameremo la tua lode per ogni età.
Intercessione per la restaurazione d’Israele

Salmo di Asaf.
Porgi orecchio, o Pastore d’Israele,
che guidi Giuseppe come un gregge;
o tu che siedi sopra i cherubini,
fa’ risplendere la tua gloria!
2 Davanti a Efraim, a Beniamino e a Manasse,
risveglia la tua potenza e vieni a salvarci!
3 O Dio, ristoraci,
fa’ risplendere il tuo volto e saremo salvi.
4 Signore, Dio degli eserciti,
fino a quando sarai irritato contro la preghiera del tuo popolo?
5 Tu li hai cibati di pane intriso di pianto
e li hai dissetati con lacrime in abbondanza.
6 Tu ci hai resi oggetto di contesa per i vicini
e i nostri nemici ridono di noi.
7 O Dio degli eserciti, ristoraci,
fa’ risplendere il tuo volto e saremo salvi.
8 Portasti fuori dall’Egitto una vite;
scacciasti le nazioni per piantarla;
9 tu sgombrasti il terreno
ed essa mise radici e riempì la terra.
10 I monti furono coperti della sua ombra
e i suoi tralci furono come cedri altissimi.
11 Stese i suoi rami fino al mare
e i suoi germogli sino al fiume.
12 Perché hai rotto i suoi recinti
e tutti i passanti la spogliano?
13 Il cinghiale del bosco la devasta,
le bestie della campagna ne fanno il loro pascolo.
14 O Dio degli eserciti, ritorna;
guarda dal cielo, e vedi, e visita questa vigna;
15 proteggi quel che la tua destra ha piantato,
e il germoglio che hai fatto crescere forte per te.
16 Essa è arsa dal fuoco, è recisa;
il popolo perisce alla minaccia del tuo volto.
17 Sia la tua mano sull’uomo della tua destra,
sul figlio dell’uomo che hai reso forte per te,
18 e noi non ci allontaneremo da te.
Facci rivivere, e noi invocheremo il tuo nome.
19 Signore, Dio degli eserciti, ristoraci,
fa’ risplendere il tuo volto e saremo salvi.
Esortazione ad ascoltare il Signore
81 (J)Al direttore del coro. Sulla ghittea.
Salmo di Asaf.
Cantate con gioia a Dio, nostra forza;
mandate grida di esultanza al Dio di Giacobbe.
2 Intonate un salmo e fate risuonare il tamburello,
l’arpa melodiosa, insieme alla cetra.
3 Suonate la tromba alla nuova luna,
alla luna piena, al giorno della nostra festa.
4 Poiché questo è uno statuto per Israele,
una legge del Dio di Giacobbe.
5 Egli lo stabilì come una testimonianza di Giuseppe,
quando uscì contro il paese d’Egitto.
Io udii allora un linguaggio che non conoscevo:
6 «O Israele, io ho sottratto le tue spalle ai pesi;
le tue mani hanno lasciato le ceste.
7 Nell’angoscia gridasti a me e io ti liberai;
ti risposi nascosto in mezzo ai tuoni,
ti misi alla prova presso le acque di Meriba. [Pausa]
8 Ascolta, popolo mio, e io ti ammonirò;
o Israele, se tu mi ascoltassi!
9 Non ci sia in mezzo a te nessun dio straniero
e non adorare un dio estraneo.
10 Io sono il Signore, il Dio tuo,
che ti fece risalire dal paese d’Egitto;
apri la tua bocca, e io la riempirò.
11 Ma il mio popolo non ha ascoltato la mia voce,
Israele non mi ha ubbidito.
12 Perciò li abbandonai alla durezza del loro cuore,
perché camminassero secondo i loro piani.
13 Oh, se il mio popolo volesse ascoltarmi,
se Israele volesse camminare nelle mie vie!
14 Subito umilierei i loro nemici
e rivolgerei la mia mano contro i loro avversari.
15 Quelli che odiano il Signore striscerebbero davanti a lui
e la loro sorte sarebbe decisa per sempre.
16 Io nutrirei Israele con fior di frumento
e lo sazierei di miele che stilla dalla roccia».
Condanna contro i giudici iniqui

Dio sta nell’assemblea divina;
egli giudica in mezzo agli dèi.
2 «Fino a quando giudicherete ingiustamente
e avrete riguardo agli empi? [Pausa]
3 Difendete la causa del debole e dell’orfano,
fate giustizia all’afflitto e al povero!
4 Liberate il misero e il bisognoso,
salvatelo dalla mano degli empi!
5 Essi non conoscono né comprendono nulla;
camminano nelle tenebre;
tutte le fondamenta della terra sono smosse.
6 Io ho detto: “Voi siete dèi[l],
siete figli dell’Altissimo”.
7 Eppure morrete come gli altri uomini
e cadrete come ogni altro potente».
8 Sorgi, o Dio, giudica la terra,
poiché tutte le nazioni ti appartengono.

O Dio, non restare silenzioso!
Non rimanere impassibile e inerte, o Dio!
2 Poiché, ecco, i tuoi nemici si agitano,
i tuoi avversari alzano la testa.
3 Tramano insidie contro il tuo popolo
e congiurano contro quelli che tu proteggi.
4 Dicono: «Venite, distruggiamoli come nazione
e il nome d’Israele non sia più ricordato!»
5 Poiché si sono accordati con uno stesso sentimento,
stringono un patto contro di te:
6 le tende di Edom e gli Ismaeliti;
Moab e gli Agareni;
7 Ghelal, Ammon e Amalec;
la Filistia con gli abitanti di Tiro;
8 anche l’Assiria si è aggiunta a loro;
presta il suo braccio ai figli di Lot. [Pausa]
9 Fa’ a loro come facesti a Madian,
a Sisera, a Iabin presso il torrente di Chison,
10 i quali furono distrutti a En-Dor,
servirono da concime alla terra.
11 Rendi i loro capi come Oreb e Zeeb,
tutti i loro prìncipi come Zeba e Salmunna;
12 poiché hanno detto:
«Impossessiamoci delle dimore di Dio!»

Psalm 73
A psalm of Asaph.
1 Surely God is good to Israel,
to those who are pure in heart.(A)
2 But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;(B)
I had nearly lost my foothold.(C)
3 For I envied(D) the arrogant
when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.(E)
4 They have no struggles;
their bodies are healthy and strong.[a]
5 They are free(F) from common human burdens;
they are not plagued by human ills.
6 Therefore pride(G) is their necklace;(H)
they clothe themselves with violence.(I)
7 From their callous hearts(J) comes iniquity[b];
their evil imaginations have no limits.
8 They scoff, and speak with malice;(K)
with arrogance(L) they threaten oppression.(M)
9 Their mouths lay claim to heaven,
and their tongues take possession of the earth.
10 Therefore their people turn to them
and drink up waters in abundance.[c]
11 They say, “How would God know?
Does the Most High know anything?”
13 Surely in vain(P) I have kept my heart pure
and have washed my hands in innocence.(Q)
14 All day long I have been afflicted,(R)
and every morning brings new punishments.
15 If I had spoken out like that,
I would have betrayed your children.
16 When I tried to understand(S) all this,
it troubled me deeply
17 till I entered the sanctuary(T) of God;

18 Surely you place them on slippery ground;(V)
you cast them down to ruin.(W)
19 How suddenly(X) are they destroyed,
completely swept away(Y) by terrors!
20 They are like a dream(Z) when one awakes;(AA)
when you arise, Lord,

21 When my heart was grieved
and my spirit embittered,

I was a brute beast(AD) before you.
23 Yet I am always with you;

1 O God, why have you rejected(AS) us forever?(AT)
Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?(AU)
2 Remember the nation you purchased(AV) long ago,(AW)
the people of your inheritance,(AX) whom you redeemed(AY)—
Mount Zion,(AZ) where you dwelt.(BA)
3 Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins,(BB)
all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.
4 Your foes roared(BC) in the place where you met with us;
they set up their standards(BD) as signs.
5 They behaved like men wielding axes
to cut through a thicket of trees.(BE)
6 They smashed all the carved(BF) paneling
with their axes and hatchets.
7 They burned your sanctuary to the ground;
they defiled(BG) the dwelling place(BH) of your Name.(BI)
8 They said in their hearts, “We will crush(BJ) them completely!”
They burned(BK) every place where God was worshiped in the land.
9 We are given no signs from God;(BL)
no prophets(BM) are left,
and none of us knows how long this will be.
10 How long(BN) will the enemy mock(BO) you, God?
Will the foe revile(BP) your name forever?
11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?(BQ)
Take it from the folds of your garment(BR) and destroy them!
13 It was you who split open the sea(BU) by your power;
you broke the heads of the monster(BV) in the waters.
14 It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan(BW)
and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.(BX)
15 It was you who opened up springs(BY) and streams;
you dried up(BZ) the ever-flowing rivers.
16 The day is yours, and yours also the night;

18 Remember how the enemy has mocked you, Lord,
how foolish people(CD) have reviled your name.
19 Do not hand over the life of your dove(CE) to wild beasts;
do not forget the lives of your afflicted(CF) people forever.
20 Have regard for your covenant,(CG)
because haunts of violence fill the dark places(CH) of the land.
21 Do not let the oppressed(CI) retreat in disgrace;
may the poor and needy(CJ) praise your name.
22 Rise up,(CK) O God, and defend your cause;
remember how fools(CL) mock you all day long.
23 Do not ignore the clamor(CM) of your adversaries,(CN)
the uproar(CO) of your enemies,(CP) which rises continually.

1 We praise you, God,
we praise you, for your Name is near;(CQ)
people tell of your wonderful deeds.(CR)
2 You say, “I choose the appointed time;(CS)
it is I who judge with equity.(CT)
3 When the earth and all its people quake,(CU)
it is I who hold its pillars(CV) firm.[f]
4 To the arrogant(CW) I say, ‘Boast no more,’(CX)
and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horns.[g](CY)
5 Do not lift your horns against heaven;
do not speak so defiantly.(CZ)’”
6 No one from the east or the west
or from the desert can exalt themselves.

8 In the hand of the Lord is a cup
full of foaming wine mixed(DC) with spices;
he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth
drink it down to its very dregs.(DD)
9 As for me, I will declare(DE) this forever;

10 who says, “I will cut off the horns of all the wicked,
but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”(DH)

1 God is renowned in Judah;
in Israel his name is great.(DI)

4 You are radiant with light,(DN)
more majestic than mountains rich with game.
5 The valiant(DO) lie plundered,
they sleep their last sleep;(DP)
not one of the warriors
can lift his hands.

I cried out to God to hear me.

4 You kept my eyes from closing;

1 My people, hear my teaching;(FL)
listen to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth with a parable;(FM)
I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
3 things we have heard and known,
things our ancestors have told us.(FN)
4 We will not hide them from their descendants;(FO)
we will tell the next generation(FP)
the praiseworthy deeds(FQ) of the Lord,
his power, and the wonders(FR) he has done.
5 He decreed statutes(FS) for Jacob(FT)
and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach their children,
6 so the next generation would know them,
even the children yet to be born,(FU)
and they in turn would tell their children.
7 Then they would put their trust in God
and would not forget(FV) his deeds
but would keep his commands.(FW)
8 They would not be like their ancestors(FX)—
a stubborn(FY) and rebellious(FZ) generation,
whose hearts were not loyal to God,
whose spirits were not faithful to him.
9 The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows,(GA)
turned back on the day of battle;(GB)
10 they did not keep God’s covenant(GC)
and refused to live by his law.(GD)
11 They forgot what he had done,(GE)
the wonders he had shown them.
12 He did miracles(GF) in the sight of their ancestors
in the land of Egypt,(GG) in the region of Zoan.(GH)
13 He divided the sea(GI) and led them through;
he made the water stand up like a wall.(GJ)
14 He guided them with the cloud by day
and with light from the fire all night.(GK)
15 He split the rocks(GL) in the wilderness
and gave them water as abundant as the seas;
16 he brought streams out of a rocky crag
and made water flow down like rivers.
17 But they continued to sin(GM) against him,
rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.
18 They willfully put God to the test(GN)
by demanding the food they craved.(GO)
19 They spoke against God;(GP)
they said, “Can God really
spread a table in the wilderness?
20 True, he struck the rock,
and water gushed out,(GQ)
streams flowed abundantly,
but can he also give us bread?
Can he supply meat(GR) for his people?”
21 When the Lord heard them, he was furious;
his fire broke out(GS) against Jacob,
and his wrath rose against Israel,
22 for they did not believe in God
or trust(GT) in his deliverance.
23 Yet he gave a command to the skies above
and opened the doors of the heavens;(GU)
24 he rained down manna(GV) for the people to eat,
he gave them the grain of heaven.
25 Human beings ate the bread of angels;
he sent them all the food they could eat.
26 He let loose the east wind(GW) from the heavens
and by his power made the south wind blow.
27 He rained meat down on them like dust,
birds(GX) like sand on the seashore.
28 He made them come down inside their camp,
all around their tents.
29 They ate till they were gorged—(GY)
he had given them what they craved.
30 But before they turned from what they craved,
even while the food was still in their mouths,(GZ)
31 God’s anger rose against them;
he put to death the sturdiest(HA) among them,
cutting down the young men of Israel.
32 In spite of all this, they kept on sinning;(HB)
in spite of his wonders,(HC) they did not believe.(HD)
33 So he ended their days in futility(HE)
and their years in terror.
34 Whenever God slew them, they would seek(HF) him;
they eagerly turned to him again.
35 They remembered that God was their Rock,(HG)
that God Most High was their Redeemer.(HH)
36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths,(HI)
lying to him with their tongues;
37 their hearts were not loyal(HJ) to him,
they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he was merciful;(HK)
he forgave(HL) their iniquities(HM)
and did not destroy them.
Time after time he restrained his anger(HN)
and did not stir up his full wrath.
39 He remembered that they were but flesh,(HO)
a passing breeze(HP) that does not return.
40 How often they rebelled(HQ) against him in the wilderness(HR)
and grieved him(HS) in the wasteland!
41 Again and again they put God to the test;(HT)
they vexed the Holy One of Israel.(HU)
42 They did not remember(HV) his power—
the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,(HW)
43 the day he displayed his signs(HX) in Egypt,
his wonders(HY) in the region of Zoan.
44 He turned their river into blood;(HZ)
they could not drink from their streams.
45 He sent swarms of flies(IA) that devoured them,
and frogs(IB) that devastated them.
46 He gave their crops to the grasshopper,(IC)
their produce to the locust.(ID)
47 He destroyed their vines with hail(IE)
and their sycamore-figs with sleet.
48 He gave over their cattle to the hail,
their livestock(IF) to bolts of lightning.
49 He unleashed against them his hot anger,(IG)
his wrath, indignation and hostility—
a band of destroying angels.(IH)
50 He prepared a path for his anger;
he did not spare them from death
but gave them over to the plague.
51 He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt,(II)
the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.(IJ)
52 But he brought his people out like a flock;(IK)
he led them like sheep through the wilderness.
53 He guided them safely, so they were unafraid;
but the sea engulfed(IL) their enemies.(IM)
54 And so he brought them to the border of his holy land,
to the hill country his right hand(IN) had taken.
55 He drove out nations(IO) before them
and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance;(IP)
he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.
56 But they put God to the test
and rebelled against the Most High;
they did not keep his statutes.
57 Like their ancestors(IQ) they were disloyal and faithless,
as unreliable as a faulty bow.(IR)
58 They angered him(IS) with their high places;(IT)
they aroused his jealousy with their idols.(IU)
59 When God heard(IV) them, he was furious;(IW)
he rejected Israel(IX) completely.
60 He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh,(IY)
the tent he had set up among humans.(IZ)
61 He sent the ark of his might(JA) into captivity,(JB)
his splendor into the hands of the enemy.
62 He gave his people over to the sword;(JC)
he was furious with his inheritance.(JD)
63 Fire consumed(JE) their young men,
and their young women had no wedding songs;(JF)
64 their priests were put to the sword,(JG)
and their widows could not weep.
65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,(JH)
as a warrior wakes from the stupor of wine.
66 He beat back his enemies;
he put them to everlasting shame.(JI)
67 Then he rejected the tents of Joseph,
he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;(JJ)
68 but he chose the tribe of Judah,(JK)
Mount Zion,(JL) which he loved.
69 He built his sanctuary(JM) like the heights,
like the earth that he established forever.
70 He chose David(JN) his servant
and took him from the sheep pens;
71 from tending the sheep(JO) he brought him
to be the shepherd(JP) of his people Jacob,
of Israel his inheritance.
72 And David shepherded them with integrity of heart;(JQ)
with skillful hands he led them.

A psalm of Asaph.
1 O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;(JR)
they have defiled(JS) your holy temple,
they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.(JT)
2 They have left the dead bodies of your servants
as food for the birds of the sky,(JU)
the flesh of your own people for the animals of the wild.(JV)
3 They have poured out blood like water
all around Jerusalem,
and there is no one to bury(JW) the dead.(JX)
4 We are objects of contempt to our neighbors,
of scorn(JY) and derision to those around us.(JZ)
5 How long,(KA) Lord? Will you be angry(KB) forever?
How long will your jealousy burn like fire?(KC)
6 Pour out your wrath(KD) on the nations
that do not acknowledge(KE) you,
on the kingdoms
that do not call on your name;(KF)
7 for they have devoured(KG) Jacob
and devastated his homeland.
8 Do not hold against us the sins of past generations;(KH)
may your mercy come quickly to meet us,
for we are in desperate need.(KI)

for the glory of your name;
deliver us and forgive our sins

10 Why should the nations say,

Before our eyes, make known among the nations
that you avenge(KM) the outpoured blood(KN) of your servants.
11 May the groans of the prisoners come before you;
with your strong arm preserve those condemned to die.

the contempt they have hurled at you, Lord.

1 Hear us, Shepherd of Israel,

7 Restore us, God Almighty;
make your face shine on us,

8 You transplanted a vine(LG) from Egypt;

9 You cleared the ground for it,
and it took root and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shade,
the mighty cedars with its branches.

1 Sing for joy to God our strength;

and when the moon is full, on the day of our festival;
4 this is a decree for Israel,

5 When God went out against Egypt,(LY)
he established it as a statute for Joseph.

7 In your distress you called(MC) and I rescued you,

and turn my hand against(MO) their foes!

2 “How long will you[v] defend the unjust
and show partiality(MT) to the wicked?[w](MU)
3 Defend the weak and the fatherless;(MV)
uphold the cause of the poor(MW) and the oppressed.
4 Rescue the weak and the needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.
5 “The ‘gods’ know nothing, they understand nothing.(MX)
They walk about in darkness;(MY)
all the foundations(MZ) of the earth are shaken.
6 “I said, ‘You are “gods”;(NA)
you are all sons of the Most High.’
7 But you will die(NB) like mere mortals;
you will fall like every other ruler.”

1 O God, do not remain silent;(NF)
do not turn a deaf ear,
do not stand aloof, O God.
2 See how your enemies growl,(NG)
how your foes rear their heads.(NH)
3 With cunning they conspire(NI) against your people;
they plot against those you cherish.(NJ)
4 “Come,” they say, “let us destroy(NK) them as a nation,(NL)
so that Israel’s name is remembered(NM) no more.”
5 With one mind they plot together;(NN)
they form an alliance against you—
6 the tents of Edom(NO) and the Ishmaelites,
of Moab(NP) and the Hagrites,(NQ)
7 Byblos,(NR) Ammon(NS) and Amalek,(NT)
Philistia,(NU) with the people of Tyre.(NV)
8 Even Assyria(NW) has joined them
to reinforce Lot’s descendants.[y](NX)
9 Do to them as you did to Midian,(NY)
as you did to Sisera(NZ) and Jabin(OA) at the river Kishon,(OB)
10 who perished at Endor(OC)
and became like dung(OD) on the ground.
11 Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb,(OE)
all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,(OF)
12 who said, “Let us take possession(OG)
of the pasturelands of God.”
13 Make them like tumbleweed, my God,
like chaff(OH) before the wind.
14 As fire consumes the forest
or a flame sets the mountains ablaze,(OI)
15 so pursue them with your tempest(OJ)
and terrify them with your storm.(OK)
16 Cover their faces with shame,(OL) Lord,
so that they will seek your name.
17 May they ever be ashamed and dismayed;(OM)
may they perish in disgrace.(ON)
18 Let them know that you, whose name is the Lord(OO)—
that you alone are the Most High(OP) over all the earth.(OQ)

1 How lovely is your dwelling place,(OR)
Lord Almighty!
2 My soul yearns,(OS) even faints,
for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh cry out
for the living God.(OT)
3 Even the sparrow has found a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may have her young—
a place near your altar,(OU)
Lord Almighty,(OV) my King(OW) and my God.(OX)
4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house;
they are ever praising you.[ab]
5 Blessed are those whose strength(OY) is in you,
whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.(OZ)
6 As they pass through the Valley of Baka,
they make it a place of springs;(PA)
the autumn(PB) rains also cover it with pools.[ac]
7 They go from strength to strength,(PC)
till each appears(PD) before God in Zion.(PE)
8 Hear my prayer,(PF) Lord God Almighty;
listen to me, God of Jacob.
9 Look on our shield,[ad](PG) O God;
look with favor on your anointed one.(PH)
10 Better is one day in your courts
than a thousand elsewhere;
I would rather be a doorkeeper(PI) in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
11 For the Lord God is a sun(PJ) and shield;(PK)
the Lord bestows favor and honor;
no good thing does he withhold(PL)
from those whose walk is blameless.
