For it was not an enemy who insulted me; if it had been, I could have borne it. It was not my adversary who treated me with scorn; if it had been, I could have hidden myself.
But it was my closest friend, the one I trusted most.
But it was thou, a man mine equal, mine intimate, my familiar friend. …
Because thou hast delivered my soul from death, my feet from falling: that I may please in the sight of God, in the light of the living.

This isn’t the neighborhood bully mocking me—I could take that. This isn’t a foreign devil spitting invective—I could tune that out. It’s you! We grew up together! You! My best friend! Those long hours of leisure as we walked arm in arm, God a third party to our conversation.
But it was you, my peer, my guide, and my acquaintance.
But it is you, my equal, my best friend, one I knew so well!
For it is not an enemy that reviled me— that I could bear— Not a foe who viewed me with contempt, from that I could hide.
But it is you, a man my equal, My companion and my confidant;

If it was an enemy who reviled me, I could endure that. If a foe had treated me with contempt, I could manage to avoid him.
But it is you, a person like me, my companion and good friend.
But it is you, a man like me, my close friend in whom I confided.
But it’s you, someone like myself. It’s my companion, my close friend.
