He that dasheth in pieces has come up before thy face. Man the defenses! Watch the way! Make thy loins strong! Fortify thy power mightily!
For the Lord hath turned away the excellency of Jacob, as the excellency of Israel; for the emptiers have emptied them out and marred their vine branches.
The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet; the chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken.
The chariots shall rage in the streets, they shall jostle one against another in the broad ways; they shall seem like torches, they shall run like the lightning.
He shall muster his worthies; they shall stumble in their walk; they shall make haste to the wall thereof, and the defense shall be prepared.
The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be dissolved.
And Huzzab shall be led away captive, she shall be brought up; and her maids shall lead her as with the voice of doves, beating upon their breasts.
But Nineveh is of old like a pool of water; yet they shall flee away. “Stand, stand!” shall they cry, but none shall look back.
Take ye the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold; for there is no end of the store and glory of all the pleasant furnishings.
She is empty and void and waste; and the heart melteth, and the knees smite together; and much pain is in all loins, and the faces of them all gather blackness.
Where is the dwelling of the lions and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion’s whelp, and none made them afraid?
The lion tore in pieces enough for his whelps and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey and his dens with rapine.
“Behold, I am against thee,” saith the Lord of hosts, “and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions; and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.”
He that dasheth in pieces is come up against thee: keep the fortress, watch the way, make thy loins strong, fortify thy power mightily.
For Jehovah restoreth the excellency of Jacob, as the excellency of Israel; for the emptiers have emptied them out, and destroyed their vine-branches.
The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet: the chariots flash with steel in the day of his preparation, and the cypress spears are brandished.
The chariots rage in the streets; they rush to and fro in the broad ways: the appearance of them is like torches; they run like the lightnings.
He remembereth his nobles: they stumble in their march; they make haste to the wall thereof, and the mantelet is prepared.
The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace is dissolved.
And it is decreed: she is uncovered, she is carried away; and her handmaids moan as with the voice of doves, beating upon their breasts.
But Nineveh hath been from of old like a pool of water: yet they flee away. Stand, stand, they cry; but none looketh back.
Take ye the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold; for there is no end of the store, the glory of all goodly furniture.
She is empty, and void, and waste; and the heart melteth, and the knees smite together, and anguish is in all loins, and the faces of them all are waxed pale.
Where is the den of the lions, and the feeding-place of the young lions, where the lion and the lioness walked, the lion’s whelp, and none made them afraid?
The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his caves with prey, and his dens with ravin.
Behold, I am against thee, saith Jehovah of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions; and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.
The one who scatters has come up against you [Nineveh]. Man the fortress and ramparts, watch the road; Strengthen your back [prepare for battle], summon all your strength.
For the Lord will restore the splendor and majesty of Jacob Like the splendor of [ancient and united] Israel, Even though destroyers have destroyed them And ruined their vine branches.
The shields of his soldiers [of Media and Babylon] are colored red; The warriors are dressed in scarlet. The chariots blaze with fire of [flashing] steel When he is prepared to march, And the cypress spears are brandished [for battle].
The chariots race madly in the streets; They rush wildly in the broad plazas. Their appearance is like torches; They rush in various directions like forked lightning.
He remembers and summons his nobles; They stumble in their march [terrified because of the attack]. They hurry to the city wall, And the mantelet is prepared and firmly set up.
The gates of the rivers [surrounding Nineveh] are opened And the palace [of sun-dried brick] is dissolved [by the torrents].
It is decreed: Nineveh is stripped, and she is carried away, And her handmaids are moaning like the sound of doves, Beating on their breasts [in sorrow].
Though Nineveh was like a pool of water throughout her days, Now her inhabitants are fleeing; “Stop! Stop!” [a few cry,] But no one turns back.
Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! For there is no end to the treasure— Wealth from every precious object.
She is emptied! She is desolate and waste! Hearts melting [in fear] and knees knocking! Anguish is in the whole body, And the faces of all grow pale!
Where is the den of the lions (Assyria) And the feeding place of the young lions, Where the lion, lioness, and lion’s cub prowled With nothing to fear?
The lion [of Assyria] tore enough for his cubs (Assyrian citizens), Killed [enough prey] for his lionesses, And filled his lairs with prey And his dens with torn flesh.
“Behold, I am against you [Nineveh],” declares the Lord of hosts, “and I will burn your chariots in the smoke, and the sword will devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the land, and the voice of your messengers will no longer be heard.”
He who dashes in pieces [that is, the king of Medo-Babylon] is come up before your face [Nineveh]. Keep the fortress and ramparts manned, watch the road, gird your loins, collect and fortify all your strength and power mightily.
For the Lord restores the excellency of Jacob as the excellency of [ancient] Israel, for plunderers have plundered them and emptied them out and [outrageously] destroyed their vine branches.
The shields of the mighty men [of Media and Babylon] are [dyed] red; the valiant men are [clothed] in dyed scarlet. The chariots blaze with fire of steel on the day of his preparation [for battle], and the officers’ horses prance like a cypress forest [reeling in the wind].
The chariots rage in confusion in the streets; they run to and fro [in wild terror] in the broad ways. They flash with steel [making them appear like torches]; they rush [in various directions] like forked lightnings.
[The Assyrian leader] remembers and summons his bravest men; they stumble in their march. They hasten to the city’s wall, and their movable defense shelter is prepared and set up.
The gates or dams of the rivers [surrounding and guarding Nineveh] are opened and the [imperial] palace [of sun-dried brick] is dissolved [by the torrents] and is in dismay.
It is decreed. She [Nineveh] is stripped and removed, and her maids are lamenting and moaning like doves [softly for fear], beating upon their breasts [and hearts].
And Nineveh, like a standing pool are her waters and [her inhabitants] are fleeing away! Stand! Stand [firm! a few cry], but no one looks back or causes them to return.
Take the spoil of silver; take the spoil of gold! For there is no end of the treasure, the glory and wealth of all the precious furnishings.
Emptiness! Desolation! Utter waste! Hearts faint and knees smite together, and anguish is in all loins, and the faces of all grow pale!
Where is the den of the lions which was the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion and the lioness walked, and the lion’s whelp, and none made them afraid?
The lion tore in pieces enough for his whelps and strangled [prey] for his lionesses; he filled his caves with prey and his dens with what he had seized and carried off.
Behold, I am against you [Nineveh], says the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. And I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no more be heard.
He that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face: keep the munition, watch the way, make thy loins strong, fortify thy power mightily.
For the Lord hath turned away the excellency of Jacob, as the excellency of Israel: for the emptiers have emptied them out, and marred their vine branches.
The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet: the chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken.
The chariots shall rage in the streets, they shall justle one against another in the broad ways: they shall seem like torches, they shall run like the lightnings.
He shall recount his worthies: they shall stumble in their walk; they shall make haste to the wall thereof, and the defence shall be prepared.
The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be dissolved.
And Huzzab shall be led away captive, she shall be brought up, and her maids shall lead her as with the voice of doves, tabering upon their breasts.
But Nineveh is of old like a pool of water: yet they shall flee away. Stand, stand, shall they cry; but none shall look back.
Take ye the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold: for there is none end of the store and glory out of all the pleasant furniture.

One who scatters is coming up against you. Man the fortifications! Watch the road! Brace yourself! Summon all your strength!
For the Lord will restore the majesty of Jacob, yes, the majesty of Israel, though ravagers have ravaged them and ruined their vine branches.
The shields of his warriors are dyed red; the valiant men are dressed in scarlet. The fittings of the chariot flash like fire on the day of its battle preparations, and the spears are brandished.
The chariots dash madly through the streets; they rush around in the plazas. They look like torches; they dart back and forth like lightning.
He gives orders to his officers; they stumble as they advance. They race to its wall; the protective shield is set in place.
The river gates are opened, and the palace erodes away.
Beauty is stripped; she is carried away; her ladies-in-waiting moan like the sound of doves and beat their breasts.
Nineveh has been like a pool of water from her first days, but they are fleeing. “Stop! Stop!” they cry, but no one turns back.
“Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold!” There is no end to the treasure, an abundance of every precious thing.
Desolation, decimation, devastation! Hearts melt, knees tremble, insides churn, every face grows pale!
Where is the lions’ lair, or the feeding ground of the young lions, where the lion and lioness prowled, and the lion’s cub, with nothing to frighten them away?
The lion mauled whatever its cubs needed and strangled prey for its lionesses. It filled up its dens with the kill, and its lairs with mauled prey.
Beware, I am against you. This is the declaration of the Lord of Armies. I will make your chariots go up in smoke, and the sword will devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the sound of your messengers will never be heard again.

A scatterer has come up against you. Guard the ramparts, watch the road, protect your groin, save your strength!
The Lord will restore the pride of Jacob, indeed, the pride of Israel, because ravagers have destroyed them and spoiled their branches.
The shields of his warriors are red; his soldiers are dressed in crimson. The ironwork of the chariots flashes like fire on the day he has prepared; the horses quiver.
The chariots race wildly through the streets; they rush back and forth through the squares. They look like flaming torches; they dart like bolts of lightning.
He musters his officers; they stumble as they press forward. They hurry to the city wall, and the portable shield is set up.
The gates of the rivers are opened; the palace melts.
It is decreed: She is sent into exile, carried away, while her female servants moan like doves, beating their breasts.
Nineveh has been like a pool of water. Such are its waters, and others are fleeing. “Stop, stop!”—but no one can turn them back.
Plunder silver! Plunder gold! There is no end to the supplies, an abundance of precious objects!
Destruction and devastation; the city is laid waste! The heart grows faint and knees buckle; there is anguish in every groin; all the faces grow pale.
Where is the lions’ den, the meadow of the young lions, where lion, lioness, even lion cub go about with no one to terrify them?
The lion has torn enough prey for his cubs and strangled enough for his lionesses; he has filled his lairs with prey, his dens with torn flesh.
Look! I am against you, proclaims the Lord of heavenly forces. I will burn your chariots in smoke; the sword will devour your young lions; I will cut off your prey from the earth, the voice of your messengers will never again be heard!
Look! On the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, proclaiming shalom. Keep your festivals, Y’hudah, fulfill your vows; for B’liya‘al will never pass through you again; he has been completely destroyed.
A destroyer has risen in front of your face; guard the ramparts, keep watch on the road, brace yourselves, marshall all your strength.
For Adonai is restoring the pride of Ya‘akov, along with the pride of Isra’el; because plunderers have plundered them and ravaged their vines.
The shields of [Ninveh’s] warriors are [dyed] red; the soldiers are wearing scarlet. The steel of the chariots flashes like fire as they prepare for battle. The cypress [spears] are poisoned.
The chariots rush madly about in the streets, jostling each other in the open places; their appearance is like torches, they run here and there like lightning.
[The king of Ninveh] assigns his officers; they stumble as they march; they hurry to its wall and set up shields to protect the battering ram.
The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace melts away.
Its mistress is stripped and carried away; her handmaids moan, they sound like doves, as they beat their breasts.
Ninveh is like a pool whose water ebbs away. “Stop! Stop!” But none of it goes back.
Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! There is no end to the treasure, weighed down with precious things.
She is void, vacant; she is made bare. Hearts are melting, knees are knocking; every stomach is churning, every face is drained of color.
What has become of the lion’s den, the cave where the young lions fed, where lion and lioness walked with their cubs, and no one made them afraid?
The lion would tear up food for his cubs and strangle prey for his lionesses; he used to fill his caves with prey, his lairs with torn flesh.
“I am against you,” says Adonai-Tzva’ot. “Her chariots I will send up in smoke, the sword will consume your lion cubs, I will destroy your prey from the earth, and your envoys’ voices will be heard no more.”
Nineveh, someone is coming to attack and scatter you. Guard your fortresses! Watch the road! Be brave! Prepare for battle!
Judah and Israel are like trees with branches broken by their enemies. But the Lord is going to restore their power and glory. *
Nineveh, on this day of attack, your enemies' shields are red; their uniforms are crimson.
Their horses prance, and their armored chariots dart around like lightning or flaming torches.
An officer gives a command. But his soldiers stumble, as they hasten to build a shelter to protect themselves against rocks thrown down from the city wall.
The river gates fly open, and panic floods the palace.
Nineveh is disgraced. The queen is dragged off. Her servant women mourn; they moan like doves, and they beat their breasts in sorrow.
Nineveh is like a pond with leaking water. Shouts of “Stop! Don't go!” can be heard everywhere. But everyone is leaving.
Enemy soldiers shout, “The city is full of treasure and all kinds of wealth. Steal her silver! Grab her gold!”
Nineveh is doomed! Destroyed! Her people tremble with fear; their faces turn pale.
What happened to this city? They were safer there than powerful lions in a den, with no one to disturb them.
These are the same lions that ferociously attacked their victims, then dragged away the flesh to feed their young.
The Lord All-Powerful is against you, Nineveh. God will burn your chariots and send an army to kill those young lions of yours. You will never again make victims of others or send messengers to threaten everyone on this earth.
He that dasheth in pieces is come up against thy face: keep the fortress, watch the way, make [thy] loins strong, fortify [thy] power mightily.
For Jehovah hath brought again the glory of Jacob, as the glory of Israel; for the wasters have wasted them, and marred their vine-branches.
The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet: the chariots [glitter] with the sheen of steel, in the day of his preparation, and the spears are brandished.
The chariots rush madly in the streets, they justle one against another in the broad ways: the appearance of them is like torches, they run like lightnings.
He bethinketh him of his nobles: they stumble in their march; they make haste to the wall thereof, and the shelter is prepared.
The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace melteth away.
And it is decreed: she shall be uncovered, she shall be led away, and her maids shall moan as with the voice of doves, drumming upon their breasts.
Nineveh hath been like a pool of water, since the day she existed, yet they flee away. … Stand! Stand! But none looketh back.
Plunder the silver, plunder the gold; for there is no end of the splendid store of all precious vessels.
She is empty, and void, and waste; and the heart melteth, and the knees smite together, and writhing pain is in all loins, and all their faces grow pale.
Where is [now] the den of the lions, and the feeding-place of the young lions, where the lion, the lioness, [and] the lion's whelp walked, and none made them afraid?
The lion tore in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with ravin.
Behold, I am against thee, saith Jehovah of hosts: and I will burn her chariots into smoke; and the sword shall devour thy young lions, and I will cut off thy prey from the earth; and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.
He is come up that shall destroy before thy face, that shall keep the siege: watch the way, fortify thy loins, strengthen thy power exceedingly.
For the Lord hath rendered the pride of Jacob, as the pride of Israel: because the spoilers have laid them waste, and have marred their vine branches.
The shield of his mighty men is like fire, the men of the army are clad in scarlet, the reins of the chariot are flaming in the day of his preparation, and the drivers are stupefied.
They are in confusion in the ways, the chariots jostle one against another in the streets: their looks are like torches, like lightning running to and fro.
He will muster up his valiant men, they shall stumble in their march: they shall quickly get upon the walls thereof: and a covering shall be prepared.
The gates of the rivers are opened, and the temple is thrown down to the ground.
And the soldier is led away captive: and her bondwomen were led away mourning as doves, murmuring in their hearts.
And as for Ninive, her waters are like a great pool, but the men flee away. They cry: Stand, stand, but there is none that will return back.
Take ye the spoil of the silver, take the spoil of the gold: for there is no end of the riches of all the precious furniture.
She is destroyed, and rent, and torn: the heart melteth, and the knees fail, and all the loins lose their strength: and the faces of them all are as the blackness of a kettle.
Where is now the dwelling of the lions, and the feeding place of the young lions, to which the lion went, to enter in thither, the young lion, and there was none to make them afraid?
The lion caught enough for his whelps, and killed for his lionesses: and he filled his holes with prey, and his den with rapine.
Behold I come against thee, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will burn thy chariots even to smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey out of the land, and the voice of thy messengers shall be heard no more.
An enemy is coming to attack you, so guard the strong places of your city. Watch the road. Get ready for war. Prepare for battle!
Yes, the Lord changed Jacob’s pride. He made it like Israel’s pride. The enemy destroyed them and ruined their grapevines.
The shields of his soldiers are red. Their uniforms are bright red. Their chariots are shining like flames of fire and are lined up for battle. Their horses are ready to go.
The chariots race wildly through the streets and rush back and forth through the square. They look like burning torches, like lightning flashing from place to place!
The enemy calls for his best soldiers. They stumble as they rush ahead. They run to the wall and set up their shield over the battering ram.
But the gates by the rivers are open, and the enemy comes flooding in and destroys the king’s palace.
The enemy takes away the queen, and her slave girls moan sadly like doves. They beat their breasts to show their sadness.
Nineveh is like a pool whose water is draining away. People yell, “Stop! Stop running away!” But it does not do any good.
Take the silver! Take the gold! There are many things to take. There are many treasures.
Now Nineveh is empty. Everything is stolen. The city is ruined. People have lost their courage, their hearts melt with fear, their knees knock together, their bodies shake, and their faces turn pale.
Where is that great city now? It was like a den where the lions feed their young. It was a place where people felt safe, like lions in a cave with no one there to harm them.
The lion was able to catch plenty of food to feed his cubs and his mate. He filled his cave with the animals he killed. He filled his den with the meat he gathered.
The Lord All-Powerful says, “I am against you, Nineveh. I will burn your chariots and kill your ‘young lions’ in battle. You will not hunt anyone on earth again. People will never again hear bad news from your messengers.”
An enemy is coming to attack you, people of Nineveh. Watch carefully from the city's walls! Prepare your army to protect the city. Watch the road. Get ready to fight with all your strength!
Your soldiers have destroyed the great nations of Israel and Jacob. They have destroyed their fields and their vineyards. But, the Lord will make Israel and Jacob great again.
Strong soldiers are coming to attack Nineveh! They have red shields and bright red clothes. The soldiers wave their spears in the air. The metal on their chariots shines brightly.
When the soldiers are ready for war they move quickly through the streets. Their chariots move very fast, like lightning in the sky.
The army leader chooses his best soldiers to go forward. They almost fall as they run! They hurry to the city wall and they prepare to attack.
They open the river gates and the water rushes into the city. It destroys the palace.
Nineveh's people must be led away to another country. They are ashamed. Her female slaves cry like doves and they hit themselves.
Nineveh is like a pool of water. But now its people run away, like water that is pouring away. ‘Stop, stop!’ they shout, but nobody comes back.
Take the silver. Take the gold. The city has so many valuable things.
They take the valuable things from the city. They take everything that they can. And they destroy everything else. The people are very sad. Their knees and their bodies shake. Their faces become white because they are afraid.
The home of the lions has gone. The place where they fed their young lions has gone. This was the place where whole families of lions once lived. It is here where their young lions were not afraid.
The lion killed to give enough food to his young lions and he strangled animals to feed his female lion. He filled his home with the animals that he had killed.
The Lord Almighty says, ‘I am against you. I will burn your chariots and the sword will kill your young lions. I will take away all the animals that you attack. Nobody will hear the voices of your messengers.’
The enemy who will scatter you is advancing against you! Guard the rampart! Watch the road! Prepare for battle! Muster all your great strength!
For the Lord is about to restore the majesty of Jacob, as well as the majesty of Israel, even though their enemies have plundered them completely and have destroyed their vines.
The shields of the mighty warriors are dyed red. The soldiers are dressed in scarlet garments. The steel fittings of the chariots shine like fire on the day of battle. The soldiers shake their spears.
The chariots race wildly through the streets. They rush back and forth in the city squares. They look like lightning. They dart about like flashes of lightning.
The commander gives orders to his elite troops. They fall over each other as they advance. They rush to the city wall. They set up the protective canopy over the battering ram.
The gates that hold back the river are opened, and the palace is washed away.
She is stripped and is led away. Her slave girls moan like doves while they beat their breasts.
Nineveh was like a pool of water from her beginning, but now her people are running away. She cries out, “Stop! Stop!” but no one turns back.
Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! There is no end to the treasure. There are riches of every kind of precious thing.
Destruction, devastation, and desolation! Their hearts faint, their knees tremble, every stomach churns, and each face turns pale!
What has become of the lions’ lair and the feeding place for young lions, where the lion, lioness, and lion’s cub prowled with nothing to fear?
The lion tore apart as much prey as his cubs needed and strangled prey to provide food for his lionesses. He filled his lairs with prey and his dens with torn flesh.
Beware! I am against you, declares the Lord of Armies. I will burn up your chariots in smoke. The sword will devour your young lions. You will no longer ravage the land. The voices of your messengers will no longer be heard.
The scatterer has come up against you. Man the ramparts; watch the road; dress for battle; collect all your strength.
For the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob as the majesty of Israel, for plunderers have plundered them and ruined their branches.
The shield of his mighty men is red; his soldiers are clothed in scarlet. The chariots come with flashing metal on the day he musters them; the cypress spears are brandished.
The chariots race madly through the streets; they rush to and fro through the squares; they gleam like torches; they dart like lightning.
He remembers his officers; they stumble as they go, they hasten to the wall; the siege tower is set up.
The river gates are opened; the palace melts away;
its mistress is stripped; she is carried off, her slave girls lamenting, moaning like doves and beating their breasts.
Nineveh is like a pool whose waters run away. “Halt! Halt!” they cry, but none turns back.
Plunder the silver, plunder the gold! There is no end of the treasure or of the wealth of all precious things.
Desolate! Desolation and ruin! Hearts melt and knees tremble; anguish is in all loins; all faces grow pale!
Where is the lions' den, the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion and lioness went, where his cubs were, with none to disturb?
The lion tore enough for his cubs and strangled prey for his lionesses; he filled his caves with prey and his dens with torn flesh.

·Take [Plunder] the silver! ·Take [Plunder] the gold! There is no end to the treasure— piles of wealth of every ·kind [precious/desirable thing].
·Nineveh is robbed [L Empty!], ·ruined [desolate!], and destroyed. ·The people lose their courage [L Their hearts melt], and their knees knock. ·Stomachs ache [Bodies/Loins in anguish], and everyone’s face grows pale.
Where is the lions’ den [C the lion was a symbol of Assyria] and the place where they feed their young? Where did the lion, lioness, and cubs go without being afraid?
The lion killed enough for his cubs, ·enough [L and strangled prey] for his ·mate [L lionesses]. He filled his cave with ·the animals he caught [prey]; he filled his den with ·meat he had killed [L torn (flesh)].
“I am against ·you, Nineveh [L you],” says the Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts]. “I will burn up your chariots in smoke, and the sword will ·kill [devour] your young lions. I will ·stop you from hunting down others on [L cut off your prey from] the earth, and your messengers’ voices will no longer be heard.”
He describeth the victories of the Chaldeans against the Assyrians. The destroyer is come before thy face: keep the munition: look to the way: make thy loins strong: increase thy strength mightily.
For the Lord hath turned away the glory of Jacob, as the glory of Israel: for the emptiers have emptied them out, and marred their vine branches.
The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet: the chariots shall be as in the fire and flames in the day of his preparation, and the fir trees shall tremble.
The chariots shall rage in the streets: they shall run to and fro in the highways: they shall seem like lamps: they shall shoot like the lightning.
He shall remember his strong men: they shall stumble as they go: they shall make haste to the walls thereof, and the defense shall be prepared.
The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall melt.
And Huzzab the Queen shall be led away captive, and her maids shall lead her as with the voice of doves, smiting upon their breasts.
But Nineveh is of old like a pool of water: yet they shall flee away. Stand, stand, shall they cry: but none shall look back.
Spoil ye the silver, spoil the gold: for there is none end of the store and glory of all the pleasant vessels.
She is empty and void and waste, and the heart melteth, and the knees smite together, and sorrow is in all loins, and the faces of them all gather blackness.
Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the pasture of the lion’s whelps? where the lion and the lioness waked, and the lion’s whelp, and none made them afraid.
The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and worried for his lioness, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with spoil.
Behold, I come unto thee saith the Lord of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions, and I will cut off thy spoil from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.
The one who will scatter you is coming to attack you. Guard your fortress! Keep a lookout on the road! Prepare for battle! Be very courageous!
The Lord will restore Jacob’s glory like Israel’s glory, although enemies have looted it and have destroyed its vines.
The shields of his warriors are painted red. His soldiers have red uniforms. The metal on his chariots flashes fiery red, so do the spears when they are waved on the day he prepares for battle.
Chariots are racing madly through the streets, rushing this way and that in the city squares. They look like torches, like lightning, as they dart about.
He remembers his best fighting men. They stumble over themselves as they march. They hurry to Nineveh’s wall. The shield has been set up for the battering ram.
The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace melts away.
The Lord has determined: “It will be stripped. It will be carried away. Its young women will be mourning like doves as they beat their breasts.”
Nineveh was like a pool of water from its first day on. But now its people are fleeing. “Stop! Stop!” But no one turns around.
Steal the silver! Steal the gold! There is no end to what is stored here— everything a person could ever want.
Nineveh is destroyed, deserted, demolished. Hearts are melting. Knees are knocking. Every stomach becomes upset. Every face turns pale.
Where is the lions’ den, that feeding place for young lions? Where are the lion, the lioness, and the lion cub who moved about with no one to terrify them?
The lion tore its prey to pieces to feed its cubs. It strangled ⌞the prey⌟ for its mates. It used to fill its caves with torn carcasses and its dens with torn flesh.
“I am against you, Nineveh,” declares the Lord of Armies. “I will send your chariots up in smoke, and a sword will kill your young lions. I will remove your prey from the earth, and no one will ever hear the voice of your messengers again.”
Nineveh, you are under attack! The power that will shatter you has come. Prepare the defenses! Guard the road! Prepare for battle!
The Lord is about to restore the glory of Israel, as it was before her enemies plundered her.
The enemy soldiers carry red shields and wear uniforms of red. They are preparing to attack! Their chariots flash like fire! Their horses prance!
Chariots dash wildly through the streets, rushing back and forth in the city squares. They flash like torches and dart about like lightning.
The officers are summoned; they stumble as they press forward. The attackers rush to the wall and set up the shield for the battering ram.
The gates by the river burst open; the palace is filled with terror.
The queen is taken captive; her servants moan like doves and beat their breasts in sorrow.
Like water from a broken dam the people rush from Nineveh! “Stop! Stop!” the cry rings out— but no one turns back.
Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! The city is full of treasure!
Nineveh is destroyed, deserted, desolate! Hearts melt with fear; knees tremble, strength is gone; faces grow pale.
Where now is the city that was like a den of lions, the place where young lions were fed, where the lion and the lioness would go and their cubs would be safe?
The lion killed his prey and tore it to pieces for his mate and her cubs; he filled his den with torn flesh.
“I am your enemy!” says the Lord Almighty. “I will burn up your chariots. Your soldiers will be killed in war, and I will take away everything that you took from others. The demands of your envoys will no longer be heard.”
Beauty is stripped, she is carried away; her ladies-in-waiting moan like the sound of doves, and beat their breasts.
Hearts melt, knees tremble, loins shake, every face grows pale!
This is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts. I will make your chariots go up in smoke and the sword will devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the sound of your messengers will never be heard again.
The destroyer is coming to attack you, Nineveh. Guard the defenses. Watch the road. Get ready. Gather all your strength!
Destroyers have destroyed God’s people and ruined their vines. But the Lord will make the people of Jacob and the people of Israel great again.
The shields of the soldiers are red. The army is dressed in red. The metal on the chariots flashes when they are ready to attack. Their horses are excited.
The chariots race through the streets. They rush back and forth through the city squares. They look like torches. They run like lightning.
He calls his officers. But they fall down on the way. They hurry to the city wall. The shield is put into place.
The river gates are thrown open. And the palace is destroyed.
It has been announced that the people of Nineveh will be captured and carried away. The slave girls moan like doves. They beat their breasts because they are sad.
Nineveh is like a pool. And its water is draining away. “Stop! Stop!” the people yell. But no one turns back.
Take the silver! Take the gold! There is no end to the treasure. There is wealth of every kind.
Nineveh is robbed, ruined and destroyed. The people lose their courage. Their knees knock with fear. Stomachs ache. And everyone’s face grows pale from fright.
Where is the lions’ den? Where do they feed their young? Where did the lion, lioness and cubs go? Where were they not afraid?
The lion killed enough for his cubs. He killed it for his mate. He filled his cave with the animals he caught. He filled his den with what he had killed.
“I am against you, Nineveh,” says the Lord of heaven’s armies. “I will burn up your chariots in smoke. And I will kill your young lions with a sword. I will stop you from hunting down others on the earth. Your messengers’ voices will no longer be heard.”
You are being attacked by advancing forces! Guard your rampart! Watch your roads! Prepare yourselves! Marshall your defenses!
For the Lord will restore the glory of Jacob, just as he will restore the glory of Israel, although plunderers have devastated them, vandalizing their vine branches.
The shields deployed by Israel’s elite forces are scarlet, their valiant men are clothed in crimson. When they are prepared, the polished armament on their chariots will shine, and lances will be brandished about ferociously.
Their chariots storm through the streets, jostling each other along broad avenues. They look like torches, as they dart around like lightning.
He will remember to summon his finest troops. They will stumble on their way, hurrying over to Nineveh’s wall. Their defensive shield is in place.
The river gates will be opened, and the palace will collapse.
It has been determined: The woman is unveiled and sent away, her servant girls mourn. Beating their breasts, they whimper like doves.
Nineveh is a reservoir whose water is draining away. “Wait! Wait!” they cry, yet not even one person looks back.
Take the silver! Take the gold! There is no end to the treasure— fabulous riches of every imagination.
Nineveh is devastated, deserted, and desolate. Her heart melts, her knees knock. Every stomach is upset, every face grows pale.
Where is this lion’s den? Where is the place where the young lions fed, where the lion and its mate walked with their young, the place where they feared nothing?
This lion renders its prey to pieces to feed its whelps, and strangles enough prey for its mate, filling its lairs with prey and its dens with rendered flesh.
“I am against you,” declares the Lord of the Heavenly Armies, “and I will send your chariots up in smoke. A sword will devour your young lions, I will eliminate your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers will no longer be heard.”
¶ The destroyer is risen up against thee: keep the fortress, watch the way, make thy loins strong, fortify thy power mightily.
For the LORD shall restore the glory of Jacob as the glory of Israel; for the emptiers have emptied them out and marred their vine branches.
The shield of his valiant ones shall be red, the men of his army are in scarlet, the chariot as fire of torches in the day which shall be made ready; the fir trees shall be terribly shaken.
The chariots shall rage in the streets; they shall flow through the streets, their faces like torches; they shall run like the lightnings.
He shall remember his valiant ones; they shall stumble in their walk when they make haste to their wall, and the covering shall be prepared.
The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be destroyed.
And the queen shall be taken captive; they shall order her to go up, and her maids shall take her, mourning as with the voice of doves, beating upon their breasts.
And Nineveh was of old like a pool of water; but now they flee away. Stand, stand, shall they cry; but no one looks back.
Take the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold, for there is no end of the riches; honour, more than all the desirable furniture.
She is empty and worn out and is in pieces, and the heart melted, the knees smite together, and much pain is in the kidneys, and the faces of them all gather blackness.
¶ What of the dwelling of the lions and of the feeding place of the young lions where the lion and the lioness walked and the lion’s whelps, and no one made them afraid?
The lion tore in pieces enough for his whelps and strangled for his lionesses and filled his holes with prey and his dens with robbery.
Behold, I speak unto thee, saith the LORD of the hosts, and I will burn and reduce thy chariots into smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions; and I will cut off thy robbery from the earth, and the voice of thy ambassadors shall never be heard again.

Behold, I am against thee, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.

Behold, I am against thee, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.
The one who scatters has come up against you. Guard the fortification, watch the road; Strengthen your loins, instill your power with exceeding courage.
For Yahweh will restore the majesty of Jacob Like the majesty of Israel, Even though those who empty them have emptied them to destruction And ruined their vine branches.
The shields of his mighty men are colored red, The valiant men are dressed in scarlet, The chariots are enveloped in flashing steel When he is set up to march, And the cypress spears are brandished.
The chariots race madly in the streets; They rush wildly in the squares; Their appearance is like torches; They dash to and fro like lightning flashes.
He remembers his mighty ones; They stumble in their march; They hurry to her wall, And the mantelet is set up.
The gates of the rivers are opened, And the palace is melted away.
So it stands fixed: She is exiled, she is carried away, And her maidservants are moaning like the sound of doves, Beating on their hearts.
Though Nineveh was like a pool of water throughout her days, Now they are fleeing; “Stand! Stand!” But no one turns back.
Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! And there is no limit to the treasure— Wealth from every kind of desirable object.
She is emptied! Yes, she is emptied out and eviscerated! Hearts are melting and knees knocking! Also anguish is in all their loins, And all their faces turn pale!
Where is the den of the lions And the feeding place of the young lions, Where the lion, lioness, and lion’s cub prowled, With nothing to make them tremble?
The lion tore enough for its cubs And strangled enough for its lionesses And filled its lairs with torn up prey And its dens with torn up flesh.
“Behold, I am against you,” declares Yahweh of hosts. “And I will burn up her chariots in smoke, and a sword will devour your young lions; and I will cut off your prey from the land, and no longer will the voice of your messengers be heard.”
One who shatters has come up against you! Guard the fortification! Watch the road! Gird your loins! Muster all your strength!
For Yahweh will restore the majesty of Jacob like the majesty of Israel; for ravagers have ravaged them and ruined their branches.
The shields of his warriors are dyed red; The powerful men are dressed in scarlet. The metal of the chariots shines like fire on the day of battle, and their spears quiver.
The chariots race madly through the streets; they rush back and forth in the public squares. Their appearance like lightning bolts, they dart about like flashes of lightning.
He calls his officers; they stumble as they march; they rush to her wall; they set the covering in place.
The gates of the river are opened; the palace trembles.
Her goddess is taken out and taken into exile; her maidservants moan like doves; they beat on their breasts.
Nineveh is like a pool of water without its water. As they flee, she cries, “Stop! Stop!” But there is no one who turns back.
Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! There is no end to the spoils, an abundance of everything one could want!
Emptiness and plundering and devastation! Their hearts faint and their knees tremble, All their loins shake and all their faces turn pale.
Where now is the den of the lions and the cave of the fierce lions? There the lioness, the cub, and the lion once prowled, and no one disturbed them.
The lion tore apart enough prey for his cubs, he strangled prey for his lioness; he filled his lair with prey and his den with mangled carcass.
“Look! I am against you!” declares Yahweh of hosts. “I will burn her chariots with fire; the sword will devour fierce lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth; the voice of your messengers will no longer be heard.”
Nineveh, you are finished! You are already surrounded by enemy armies! Sound the alarm! Man the ramparts! Muster your defenses, full force, and keep a sharp watch for the enemy attack to begin!
For the land of the people of God lies empty and broken after your attacks, but the Lord will restore their honor and power again!
Shields flash red in the sunlight! The attack begins! See their scarlet uniforms! See their glittering chariots moving forward side by side, pulled by prancing steeds!
Your own chariots race recklessly along the streets and through the squares, darting like lightning, gleaming like torches.
The king shouts for his officers; they stumble in their haste, rushing to the walls to set up their defenses.
But too late! The river gates are open! The enemy has entered! The palace is in panic!
The queen of Nineveh is brought out naked to the streets and led away, a slave, with all her maidens weeping after her; listen to them mourn like doves and beat their breasts!
Nineveh is like a leaking water tank! Her soldiers slip away, deserting her; she cannot hold them back. “Stop, stop,” she shouts, but they keep on running.
Loot the silver! Loot the gold! There seems to be no end of treasures. Her vast, uncounted wealth is stripped away.
Soon the city is an empty shambles; hearts melt in horror; knees quake; her people stand aghast, pale-faced and trembling.
Where now is that great Nineveh, lion of the nations, full of fight and boldness, where even the old and feeble, as well as the young and tender, lived unafraid?
O Nineveh, once mighty lion! You crushed your enemies to feed your children and your wives, and filled your city and your homes with captured goods and slaves.
But now the Lord Almighty has turned against you. He destroys your weapons. Your chariots stand there, silent and unused. Your finest youths lie dead. Never again will you bring back slaves from conquered nations; never again will you rule the earth.
The juggernaut’s coming! Post guards, lay in supplies. Get yourselves together, get ready for the big battle. * * *
God has restored the Pride of Jacob, the Pride of Israel. Israel’s lived through hard times. He’s been to hell and back.
Weapons flash in the sun, the soldiers splendid in battle dress, Chariots burnished and glistening, ready to charge, A spiked forest of brandished spears, lethal on the horizon. The chariots pour into the streets. They fill the public squares, Flaming like torches in the sun, like lightning darting and flashing. The Assyrian king rallies his men, but they stagger and stumble. They run to the ramparts to stem the tide, but it’s too late. Soldiers pour through the gates. The palace is demolished. Soon it’s all over: Nineveh stripped, Nineveh doomed, Maids and slaves moaning like doves, beating their breasts. Nineveh is a tub from which they’ve pulled the plug. Cries go up, “Do something! Do something!” but it’s too late. Nineveh’s soon empty—nothing. Other cries come: “Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! A bonanza of plunder! Take everything you want!” Doom! Damnation! Desolation! Hearts sink, knees fold, stomachs retch, faces blanch. So, what happened to the famous and fierce Assyrian lion And all those cute Assyrian cubs? To the lion and lioness Cozy with their cubs, fierce and fearless? To the lion who always returned from the hunt with fresh kills for lioness and cubs, The lion lair heaped with bloody meat, blood and bones for the royal lion feast? * * *
“Assyria, I’m your enemy,” says God-of-the-Angel-Armies. “I’ll torch your chariots. They’ll go up in smoke. ‘Lion Country’ will be strewn with carcasses. The war business is over—you’re out of work: You’ll have no more wars to report, No more victories to announce. You’re out of war work forever.”
He who scatters has come to you. Guard the fortifications! Watch the road! Prepare yourself, and strengthen yourself!
For the Lord is restoring the prominence of Jacob, even the prominence of Israel, for others have certainly laid waste their vines.
The shields of his mighty men are soaked red, even the mighty men are clad in red. In the day he prepares the chariots, they are like a fire of iron. The cypress spears are ready.
The chariots run wildly through the streets, they rush to and fro in the open areas; their appearance is like torches, they dash to and fro like lightning.
He remembers his officers as they stumble about on the road; they hurry on to the wall as the siege tower is set up.
The holding gates are opened wide, and the palace washes away.
It is decreed: She is uncovered and led away captive; her handmaidens shall lead her as with the voice of doves, beating their chests.
Nineveh is like a pool whose waters run away. “Halt! Halt!” they cry, but no one turns back.
“Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! There is no limit to the treasure, or to the wealth of every precious thing.”
She is desolate, empty, and waste! Hearts melt away, and knees shake; pain is in all the loins, and all their faces grow pale.
Where is the den of the lions, and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion and lioness prowl, and the lion’s cub goes, with no one to disturb them?
The lion tore enough food for his cubs, and strangled prey for his lionesses; he has filled his caves with prey, and his dens with flesh.
I am against you, says the Lord of Hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword will devour your lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers will be heard no more.
The one who will scatter you is coming to attack you. Guard your fortress! Keep a lookout on the road! Prepare for battle! Be very courageous!

The lion tore its prey to pieces to feed its cubs. It strangled the prey for its mates. It used to fill its caves with torn carcasses and its dens with torn flesh.
“I am against you, Nineveh,” declares Yahweh Tsebaoth. “I will send your chariots up in smoke, and a sword will kill your young lions. I will remove your prey from the earth, and no one will ever hear the voice of your messengers again.”
At this moment on the mountains the footsteps of one bearing good news, of one announcing peace! Celebrate your feasts, Judah, fulfill your vows! For never again will destroyers invade you; they are completely cut off.
One who scatters has come up against you; guard the rampart, Watch the road, brace yourselves, marshal all your strength!
The Lord will restore the vine of Jacob, the honor of Israel, Because ravagers have ravaged them and ruined their branches.
The shields of his warriors are crimsoned, the soldiers clad in scarlet; Like fire are the trappings of the chariots on the day he prepares for war; the cavalry is agitated!
The chariots dash madly through the streets and wheel in the squares, Looking like torches, bolting like lightning.
His picked troops are called, ranks break at their charge; To the wall they rush, their screen is set up.
The river gates are opened, the palace is washed away.
The mistress is led forth captive, and her maidservants led away, Moaning like doves, beating their breasts.
Nineveh is like a pool whose waters escape; “Stop! Stop!” but none turns back.
“Plunder the silver, plunder the gold!” There is no end to the treasure, to wealth in every precious thing!
Emptiness, desolation, waste; melting hearts and trembling knees, Churning in every stomach, every face turning pale!
Where is the lionesses’ den, the young lions’ cave, Where the lion went in and out, and the cub, with no one to disturb them?
The lion tore apart enough for his cubs, and strangled for his lionesses; He filled his lairs with prey, and his dens with torn flesh.
I now come against you— oracle of the Lord of hosts— I will consume your chariots in smoke, and the sword will devour your young lions; Your preying on the land I will bring to an end, the cry of your lionesses will be heard no more.
The one who scatters has come up against you. Keep watch over the fortress, watch the road; Bind up your waist, summon all your strength.
For the Lord will restore the splendor of Jacob Like the splendor of Israel, Even though destroyers have laid waste to them And ruined their vines.
The shields of his warriors are dyed red, The warriors are dressed in scarlet, The chariots are fitted with flashing steel When he is prepared to march, And the juniper spears are brandished.
The chariots drive wildly in the streets, They rush around in the public squares; Their appearance is like torches, They drive back and forth like lightning flashes.
He remembers his officers; They stumble in their advance, They hurry to her wall, And the mantelet is set up.
The gates of the rivers are opened And the palace sways back and forth.
It is set: She is stripped, she is led away, And her slave women are sobbing like the sound of doves, Beating their breasts.
Though Nineveh was like a pool of water throughout her days, Yet they are fleeing; “Stop, stop,” But no one turns back.
Plunder the silver, Plunder the gold! For there is no end to the treasure— Wealth from every kind of desirable object.
She is emptied! Yes, she is desolate and waste! Hearts are melting and knees wobbling! Also trembling is in the entire body, And all their faces have become pale!
Where is the den of the lions And the feeding place of the young lions, Where the lion, lioness, and lion’s cub went With nothing to disturb them?
The lion tore enough for his cubs, Killed enough prey for his lionesses, And filled his lairs with prey And his dens with torn flesh.
“Behold, I am against you,” declares the Lord of armies. “I will burn up her chariots in smoke, and a sword will devour your young lions; I will eliminate your prey from the land, and no longer will the voice of your messengers be heard.”
The one who scatters has come up against you. Man the fortress, watch the road; Strengthen your back, summon all your strength.
For the Lord will restore the splendor of Jacob Like the splendor of Israel, Even though devastators have devastated them And destroyed their vine branches.
The shields of his mighty men are colored red, The warriors are dressed in scarlet, The chariots are enveloped in flashing steel When he is prepared to march, And the cypress spears are brandished.
The chariots race madly in the streets, They rush wildly in the squares, Their appearance is like torches, They dash to and fro like lightning flashes.
He remembers his nobles; They stumble in their march, They hurry to her wall, And the mantelet is set up.
The gates of the rivers are opened And the palace is dissolved.
It is fixed: She is stripped, she is carried away, And her handmaids are moaning like the sound of doves, Beating on their breasts.
Though Nineveh was like a pool of water throughout her days, Now they are fleeing; “Stop, stop,” But no one turns back.
Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! For there is no limit to the treasure— Wealth from every kind of desirable object.
She is emptied! Yes, she is desolate and waste! Hearts are melting and knees knocking! Also anguish is in the whole body And all their faces are grown pale!
Where is the den of the lions And the feeding place of the young lions, Where the lion, lioness and lion’s cub prowled, With nothing to disturb them?
The lion tore enough for his cubs, Killed enough for his lionesses, And filled his lairs with prey And his dens with torn flesh.
“Behold, I am against you,” declares the Lord of hosts. “I will burn up her chariots in smoke, a sword will devour your young lions; I will cut off your prey from the land, and no longer will the voice of your messengers be heard.”
Behold on the mountains the feet of the herald who proclaims good news and announces peace. Celebrate your festivals, O Judah, and fulfill your vows. For never again will the wicked invade you; they will be completely destroyed.
The Lord will restore the majesty of Jacob as well as that of Israel, even though the plunderers have ravaged them and destroyed their vines.
A destroying enemy is advancing against you; guard the ramparts. Keep watch on the road, gird your loins, and prepare to exert every last ounce of courage.
The shields of his warriors are red with blood; their garments are scarlet in color. The metal on the chariots flashes as he summons them for battle; the horses are frenzied in anticipation.
The chariots charge madly through the streets, rushing back and forth through the squares. They have the appearance of a blazing fire; they dash about like lightning bolts.
His finest troops are summoned and rush forward to the attack. They hasten toward the wall and set up the mantelet.
The river gates are opened and the palace trembles.
The captives are taken into exile and its slave girls are carried away, moaning like doves and beating their breasts.
Nineveh is like a lake whose waters are ebbing away. “Stop! Stop!” goes up the cry, but no one turns back.
“Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! There is no end to the treasure, an abundance of wealth from precious things of every kind.”
Devastation, desolation, and ruin confront faint hearts and trembling knees. The loins of all are filled with anguish; every face is drained of color.
Where now is the lions’ den, the cave where they fed their whelps, where the lion and lioness cared for their cubs, with no one to disturb them?
There the lion stored up sufficient food for his whelps and strangled prey for his mate. He filled his dens with prey and his caves with torn flesh.
“I come against you,” says the Lord of hosts. “I will set your chariots aflame, and the sword will devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the threats of your messengers will no longer be heard.”
The destroyer is coming to attack you, Nineveh. Guard the defenses. Watch the road. Get ready. Gather all your strength!
Destroyers have destroyed God’s people and ruined their vines, but the Lord will bring back Jacob’s greatness like Israel’s greatness.
The shields of his soldiers are red; the army is dressed in red. The metal on the chariots flashes like fire when they are ready to attack; their horses are excited.
The chariots race through the streets and rush back and forth through the city squares. They look like torches; they run like lightning.
He calls his officers, but they stumble on the way. They hurry to the city wall, and the shield is put into place.
The river gates are thrown open, and the palace is destroyed.
It has been announced that the people of Nineveh will be captured and carried away. The slave girls moan like doves and beat their breasts, because they are sad.
Nineveh is like a pool, and now its water is draining away. “Stop! Stop!” the people yell, but no one turns back.
Take the silver! Take the gold! There is no end to the treasure— piles of wealth of every kind.
Nineveh is robbed, ruined, and destroyed. The people lose their courage, and their knees knock. Stomachs ache, and everyone’s face grows pale.
Where is the lions’ den and the place where they feed their young? Where did the lion, lioness, and cubs go without being afraid?
The lion killed enough for his cubs, enough for his mate. He filled his cave with the animals he caught; he filled his den with meat he had killed.
“I am against you, Nineveh,” says the Lord All-Powerful. “I will burn up your chariots in smoke, and the sword will kill your young lions. I will stop you from hunting down others on the earth, and your messengers’ voices will no longer be heard.”
(2:2) An enemy who will scatter you, Nineveh, has advanced against you! Guard the rampart! Watch the road! Prepare yourselves for battle! Muster your mighty strength!
For the Lord is about to restore the majesty of Jacob, as well as the majesty of Israel, though their enemies have plundered them and have destroyed their fields.
The shields of his warriors are dyed red; the mighty soldiers are dressed in scarlet garments. The chariots are in flashing metal fittings on the day of battle; the soldiers brandish their spears.
The chariots race madly through the streets, they rush back and forth in the broad plazas; they look like lightning bolts, they dash here and there like flashes of lightning.
The commander orders his officers; they stumble as they advance; they rush to the city wall, and they set up the covered siege tower.
The sluice gates are opened; the royal palace is deluged and dissolves.
Nineveh is taken into exile and is led away; her slave girls moan like doves while they beat their breasts.
Nineveh was like a pool of water throughout her days, but now her people are running away; she cries out: “Stop! Stop!”— but no one turns back.
Her conquerors cry out: “Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold!” There is no end to the treasure; riches of every kind of precious thing.
Destruction, devastation, and desolation! Hearts faint, knees tremble; every stomach churns, all their faces have turned pale!
Where now is the den of the lions and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion, lioness, and lion cub once prowled and no one disturbed them?
The lion tore apart as much prey as his cubs needed and strangled prey for his lionesses; he filled his lairs with prey and his dens with torn flesh.
“I am against you!” declares the Lord of Heaven’s Armies: “I will burn your chariots with fire; the sword will devour your young lions. You will no longer prey upon the land; the voices of your messengers will no longer be heard.”
Nineveh, armies are coming to attack you. Guard the forts! Watch the roads! Get ready! Gather all your strength!
Assyria once took everything of value from God’s people. Its army destroyed all their vines. But the Lord will bring back the glory of Jacob’s people. He’ll make Israel glorious again.
The shields of the soldiers are red. The warriors are dressed in bright red uniforms. The metal on their chariots flashes when they are prepared for war. Their spears made out of juniper are ready to use.
The chariots race through the main streets. They rush back and forth through them. They look like flaming torches. They dart around like lightning.
Nineveh sends for their special troops. But they trip and fall on their way. They run toward the city wall. They keep their shield in front of them.
The attackers open the gates that hold back the waters of the river. And the palace falls down.
The attackers order that Nineveh’s people be taken away as prisoners. The female slaves sound like doves as they mourn. They beat their chests.
Nineveh is like a pool whose water is draining away. “Stop running away!” someone cries out. But no one turns back.
“Steal the silver!” the attackers shout. “Grab the gold!” The supply is endless. There is plenty of wealth among all the city’s treasures.
Nineveh is destroyed, robbed and stripped! Hearts melt away in fear. Knees give way. Bodies tremble with fear. Everyone’s face turns pale.
Assyria is like a lion. Where is the lions’ den now? Where did they feed their cubs? Where did all the lions go? In their den they had nothing to fear.
The lion killed enough for his cubs to eat. He choked what he caught for his mate. He filled his home with what he had killed. He brought to his dens what he had caught.
“Nineveh, I am against you,” announces the Lord who rules over all. “I will burn up your chariots with fire. Your young lions will be killed by swords. I will leave you nothing on earth to catch. The voices of your messengers will no longer be heard.”
An attacker advances against you, Nineveh. Guard the fortress, watch the road, brace yourselves, marshal all your strength!
The Lord will restore the splendor of Jacob like the splendor of Israel, though destroyers have laid them waste and have ruined their vines.
The shields of the soldiers are red; the warriors are clad in scarlet. The metal on the chariots flashes on the day they are made ready; the spears of juniper are brandished.
The chariots storm through the streets, rushing back and forth through the squares. They look like flaming torches; they dart about like lightning.
Nineveh summons her picked troops, yet they stumble on their way. They dash to the city wall; the protective shield is put in place.
The river gates are thrown open and the palace collapses.
It is decreed that Nineveh be exiled and carried away. Her female slaves moan like doves and beat on their breasts.
Nineveh is like a pool whose water is draining away. “Stop! Stop!” they cry, but no one turns back.
Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! The supply is endless, the wealth from all its treasures!
She is pillaged, plundered, stripped! Hearts melt, knees give way, bodies tremble, every face grows pale.
Where now is the lions’ den, the place where they fed their young, where the lion and lioness went, and the cubs, with nothing to fear?
The lion killed enough for his cubs and strangled the prey for his mate, filling his lairs with the kill and his dens with the prey.
“I am against you,” declares the Lord Almighty. “I will burn up your chariots in smoke, and the sword will devour your young lions. I will leave you no prey on the earth. The voices of your messengers will no longer be heard.”
An attacker advances against you, Nineveh. Guard the fortress, watch the road, brace yourselves, marshal all your strength!
The Lord will restore the splendour of Jacob like the splendour of Israel, though destroyers have laid them waste and have ruined their vines.

‘I am against you,’ declares the Lord Almighty. ‘I will burn up your chariots in smoke, and the sword will devour your young lions. I will leave you no prey on the earth. The voices of your messengers will no longer be heard.’
He who scatters has come up before your face. Man the fort! Watch the road! Strengthen your flanks! Fortify your power mightily.
For the Lord will restore the excellence of Jacob Like the excellence of Israel, For the emptiers have emptied them out And ruined their vine branches.
The shields of his mighty men are made red, The valiant men are in scarlet. The chariots come with flaming torches In the day of his preparation, And the spears are brandished.
The chariots rage in the streets, They jostle one another in the broad roads; They seem like torches, They run like lightning.
He remembers his nobles; They stumble in their walk; They make haste to her walls, And the defense is prepared.
The gates of the rivers are opened, And the palace is dissolved.
It is decreed: She shall be led away captive, She shall be brought up; And her maidservants shall lead her as with the voice of doves, Beating their breasts.
Though Nineveh of old was like a pool of water, Now they flee away. “Halt! Halt!” they cry; But no one turns back.
Take spoil of silver! Take spoil of gold! There is no end of treasure, Or wealth of every desirable prize.
She is empty, desolate, and waste! The heart melts, and the knees shake; Much pain is in every side, And all their faces are drained of color.
Where is the dwelling of the lions, And the feeding place of the young lions, Where the lion walked, the lioness and lion’s cub, And no one made them afraid?
The lion tore in pieces enough for his cubs, Killed for his lionesses, Filled his caves with prey, And his dens with flesh.
“Behold, I am against you,” says the Lord of hosts, “I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions; I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall be heard no more.”
The one who destroys has come against you, O Nineveh. Put men on the battle-walls. Watch the road. Be strong. Be ready for battle.
For the Lord will make Jacob great again, like the greatness of Israel, even when destroyers have destroyed them and their vine branches.
The battle-coverings of his strong men are red. His men of war are dressed in red. The war-wagons shine like fire when they are made ready. The cypress spears are waved.
The war-wagons race in the streets. They rush through the city. They look like fire and move like lightning.
The leaders are called. They lose their step as they go, and hurry to the wall. The battle-covering is set up.
The river gates are opened, and the king’s house falls down.
The city is laid waste and the people are carried away. Her women servants are crying like doves, beating on their breasts.
Nineveh is like a pool, where water runs away. “Stop! Stop!” they cry. But no one turns back.
Take the silver! Take the gold! For there is no end of the riches, every kind of thing of great worth.
Everything has been taken from her! Yes, she is an empty waste! Hearts are melting in fear and knees are knocking! All bodies suffer, and all their faces turn white!
Where is the home of the lions, the place where they feed their young, where the male and female and young lions went, with nothing to be afraid of?
The lion killed enough for his young, and for his female lions. He filled his home with food, with torn flesh.
“I am against you,” says the Lord of All. “I will burn up your war-wagons in smoke. A sword will destroy your young lions. I will cut off your food from the land. And the voice of your men who came with news will never be heard again.”
Your enemy is coming to crush you, Nineveh. Man the ramparts! Watch the roads! Prepare your defenses! Call out your forces!
Even though the destroyer has destroyed Judah, the Lord will restore its honor. Israel’s vine has been stripped of branches, but he will restore its splendor.
Shields flash red in the sunlight! See the scarlet uniforms of the valiant troops! Watch as their glittering chariots move into position, with a forest of spears waving above them.
The chariots race recklessly along the streets and rush wildly through the squares. They flash like firelight and move as swiftly as lightning.
The king shouts to his officers; they stumble in their haste, rushing to the walls to set up their defenses.
The river gates have been torn open! The palace is about to collapse!
Nineveh’s exile has been decreed, and all the servant girls mourn its capture. They moan like doves and beat their breasts in sorrow.
Nineveh is like a leaking water reservoir! The people are slipping away. “Stop, stop!” someone shouts, but no one even looks back.
Loot the silver! Plunder the gold! There’s no end to Nineveh’s treasures— its vast, uncounted wealth.
Soon the city is plundered, empty, and ruined. Hearts melt and knees shake. The people stand aghast, their faces pale and trembling.
Where now is that great Nineveh, that den filled with young lions? It was a place where people—like lions and their cubs— walked freely and without fear.
The lion tore up meat for his cubs and strangled prey for his mate. He filled his den with prey, his caverns with his plunder.
“I am your enemy!” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “Your chariots will soon go up in smoke. Your young men will be killed in battle. Never again will you plunder conquered nations. The voices of your proud messengers will be heard no more.”
A shatterer has come up against you. Guard the ramparts; watch the road; gird your loins; collect all your strength.
(For the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob, as well as the majesty of Israel, though ravagers have ravaged them and ruined their branches.)
The shields of his warriors are red; his soldiers are clothed in crimson. The metal on the chariots flashes on the day when he musters them; the chargers prance.
The chariots race madly through the streets, they rush to and fro through the squares; their appearance is like torches, they dart like lightning.
He calls his officers; they stumble as they come forward; they hasten to the wall, and the mantelet is set up.
The river gates are opened, the palace trembles.
It is decreed that the city be exiled, its slave-women led away, moaning like doves and beating their breasts.
Nineveh is like a pool whose waters run away. ‘Halt! Halt!’— but no one turns back.
‘Plunder the silver, plunder the gold! There is no end of treasure! An abundance of every precious thing!’
Devastation, desolation, and destruction! Hearts faint and knees tremble, all loins quake, all faces grow pale!
What became of the lions’ den, the cave of the young lions, where the lion goes, and the lion’s cubs, with no one to disturb them?
The lion has torn enough for his whelps and strangled prey for his lionesses; he has filled his caves with prey and his dens with torn flesh.
See, I am against you, says the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions; I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall be heard no more.

A shatterer [Nineveh’s overpowering enemy] is come up before thy face, [O Nineveh]; guard thy fortress, watch the derech, fortify thy loins, marshal all thy koach (power).
For Hashem is about to restore the eminence of Ya’akov, like the eminence of Yisroel; for plunderers have plundered them, and made their vine branches as shachat.
The mogen (shield) of his gibborim is made red, the anshei chayil (valiant men) are in scarlet; the chariot shall flash like fire in the day of its array, and the spears shall be brandished.
The chariot shall rage in the streets, they shall jostle one against another in the rechovot, they shall seem like flaming torches, they shall dart about like the lightnings.
He [the Assyrian king] shall remember his mighty ones; they stumble in their walk; they shall make haste to the chomah (wall) of it [Nineveh], and the defense shall be prepared.
The sha’arei haneharot (the gates of the rivers) shall be thrown open, and the heikhal (palace) reels.
Her [Nineveh’s] golus (exile) is decreed, she shall be carried away, her slave girls moaning like the kol yonim (voice of doves), beating their breasts.
But Nineveh is like a pool of mayim; and her mayim is draining away. Stop, stop, shall they cry; but no one turns back.
Take ye the plunder of kesef, take the plunder of zahav; for there is no end of the treasures, heaps of kol keli chemdah (every delightful vessel).
She is empty, and void, and stripped; and the lev melteth, and the knees give way, bodies tremble, and the faces of them all grow pale.
Where is the ma’on arayot (den of lions), and the feeding place of the young lions, where the aryeh, even the lioness, walked with their cubs, and none made them afraid?
The aryeh did tear in pieces enough for his cubs, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his lairs with prey, and his dens with torn flesh.
Hineni, I am against thee [O Nineveh], saith Hashem Tzva’os, and I will burn your chariots in the smoke, and the cherev shall devour thy young lions; and I will cut off thy prey from ha’aretz, and the voice of thy malachim (messengers) shall no more be heard.
The destroyer has come before your face. Man the ramparts! Watch the road! Harden yourselves! Increase your strength mightily!
For the LORD has turned away the glory of Jacob, as the glory of Israel. For the emptiers have emptied them out and marred their vine branches.
The shields of His mighty men are made red. The valiant men are in scarlet. The chariots are afire, flaming on the day of His preparation. And the fir trees shall tremble.
The chariots shall rage in the streets. They shall run to and fro on the highways. They shall seem like lamps. They shall shoot like lightning.
He shall remember His strong men. They shall stumble as they go. They shall hurry to its walls. And the defense shall be prepared.
The gates of the rivers shall be opened. And the palace shall melt.
And Huzzab shall be led away captive. And her maids shall lead, as with the voice of doves, striking upon their breasts.
Though Nineveh was of old like a pool of water, now they shall flee away. “Stand! Stand!” shall they cry. But no one shall look back.
Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! For there is no end to the treasure and glory of all the pleasant vessels!
She is empty and void and laid waste. And the heart melts. And the knees strike together. And sorrow is in all loins. And the faces of them all gather heat.
Where is the dwelling of the lions and the pasture of the lion’s whelps, where the lion and the lioness awakened, and the lion’s whelp, and no one made them afraid?
The lion tore enough in pieces for his whelps, and worried for his lioness, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with spoil.
“Behold, I come to you,” says the LORD of Hosts, “and I will burn her chariots in the smoke. And the sword shall devour your young lions. And I will cut off your spoil from the Earth. And the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.”
The shatterer has come up against you. Man the ramparts; watch the road; gird your loins; collect all your strength.

The officers are summoned, they stumble as they go, they hasten to the wall, the mantelet is set up.
The river gates are opened, the palace is in dismay;
its mistress is stripped, she is carried off, her maidens lamenting, moaning like doves, and beating their breasts.
Nin′eveh is like a pool whose waters run away. “Halt! Halt!” they cry; but none turns back.
Plunder the silver, plunder the gold! There is no end of treasure, or wealth of every precious thing.
Desolate! Desolation and ruin! Hearts faint and knees tremble, anguish is on all loins, all faces grow pale!
Where is the lions’ den, the cave of the young lions, where the lion brought his prey, where his cubs were, with none to disturb?
The lion tore enough for his whelps and strangled prey for his lionesses; he filled his caves with prey and his dens with torn flesh.
Behold, I am against you, says the Lord of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions; I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no more be heard.

Behold, upon the mountains are the feet of him bringing good news, proclaiming shalom. O Judah, celebrate your festivals! Fulfill your vows! For never again will Belial pass through you. He has been utterly cut off.
A shatterer has come up against you. Guard the rampart! Watch the way! Chazak! Be very courageous!
For Adonai turned aside Jacob’s pride like Israel’s pride— for spoilers emptied them out and ruined their vine branches.
He makes the shield of warriors’ red— valiant men are clad in scarlet! the chariot burns with metal fire on the day of his preparation, The fir trees are shaken.
The chariots dash madly about through the streets, rushing to and fro in the plazas, their appearance is like torches, darting like flashes of lightning.
He will recall his majestic ones. They will stumble in their march. They will hasten to her wall. Now the siege work is set up.
The river gates will be opened, and the palace will melt away.
What was erected will be exiled and carried away. Her handmaids are lamenting like the sound of doves, beating their breasts.
Nineveh was like a pool of water for days —now they are fleeing. Stop, stop! Yet no one turns back.
Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! For there is no end of treasure— glory from everything precious.
Emptiness, desolation, waste! Heart melting, knees buckling, anguish in all the loins, all their faces grown pale!
Where is the lions’ den, the feeding place for young lions— where the lion went for a lion’s cub— with nothing to disturb them?
The lion rips enough for his cubs, strangles prey for his lionesses. Yes, he fills his den with prey, his lair with torn flesh.
“Here I am against you” —it is a declaration of Adonai-Tzva’ot— “I will burn up her chariots in smoke. A sword will devour your young lions. I will cut them off from the land of your prey, and the voice of your messengers will no longer be heard.”
Nineveh, an attacker is moving in to scatter you. You had better guard your fortress, Keep watch up and down your streets, strap your war belt around your waist, And gather all the strength you can.
The Eternal One will restore all the glory given to Jacob; the new nation will resemble the splendor of Israel in its day, Although destroyers destroyed everything, even decimating every branch of Jacob’s family tree.
Here comes your attacker’s best warriors with gleaming red shields; the soldiers are in scarlet armor. Chariots gleam and flash like fire with their approach. They were carefully made ready for battle. They taunt you by waving strong spears before you.
See the chariots race each other up and down your streets, rushing back and forth through the city. They look like flaming torches. They dart like lightning bolts.
Your king remembers his specially-trained forces, but they can’t get it together, stumbling as they march. They run to protect the city wall and try to shield it from the attackers. Their resistance fails.
The city gates at the rivers are thrown wide open, and the palace collapses in the resulting flood.
A decree is set and goes out: Nineveh will be ransacked. She is stripped and will be carried far away from home. You can hear the young girls pounding their breaking hearts and moaning like terrified doves.
Nineveh was a shimmering pool of water, full to the brim in the days of her glory, but look, her soldiers are draining away. “Stop! Stop!” the Assyrian commanders shout, but no one turns back. The destruction continues.
The attacker commands, “Take all the silver; take all the gold! The supply is endless. After all, their treasury is full of stolen wealth.”
Every corner of the city is turned upside down, ransacked, stripped bare. She will lose all hope; her knees give way; she will shake with fear and turn white as a sheet.
Where now is Nineveh’s famous and deadly lion’s den? The place where they nourish their young lions into killing machines? The place where the lion and the lioness go, along with their cubs, to feed on victims? The place where they had nothing to fear?
The lion always kills enough for his cubs and strangles the prey for his mate, Filling up the lair with the blood and bones and flesh of its kill and his dens with the fallen prey.
Eternal One: I stand against you, Nineveh! I will command My heavenly army to burn up your chariots till the smoke rises up And to consume your young lions with the sword. I will leave nothing in the land to sustain you. The voice of your messengers will never again be heard.
He who dashes in pieces has come up against you. Keep the fortress! Watch the way! Strengthen your waist! Fortify your power mightily!
For Yahweh restores the excellency of Jacob as the excellency of Israel, for the destroyers have destroyed them and ruined their vine branches.
The shield of his mighty men is made red. The valiant men are in scarlet. The chariots flash with steel in the day of his preparation, and the pine spears are brandished.
The chariots rage in the streets. They rush back and forth in the wide ways. Their appearance is like torches. They run like the lightnings.
He summons his picked troops. They stumble on their way. They dash to its wall, and the protective shield is put in place.
The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace is dissolved.
It is decreed: she is uncovered, she is carried away; and her servants moan as with the voice of doves, beating on their breasts.
But Nineveh has been from of old like a pool of water, yet they flee away. “Stop! Stop!” they cry, but no one looks back.
Take the plunder of silver. Take the plunder of gold, for there is no end of treasure, an abundance of every precious thing.
She is empty, void, and waste. The heart melts, the knees knock together, their bodies and faces have grown pale.
Where is the den of the lions, and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion and the lioness walked with the lion’s cubs, and no one made them afraid?
The lion tore in pieces enough for his cubs, and strangled prey for his lionesses, and filled his caves with the kill and his dens with prey.
“Behold, I am against you,” says Yahweh of Armies, “and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword will devour your young lions; and I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers will no longer be heard.”
He went up, that shall scatter before thee, that shall keep [the] besieging; behold thou the way, comfort thou loins, strengthen thou virtue greatly. (He went up, who shall scatter thee, and shall make the siege, or the attack; look thou on the way, and strengthen thou thy loins, yea, greatly strengthen thou, or brace, thyselves.)
For as the Lord yielded the pride of Jacob, so the pride of Israel; for destroyers scattered them, and destroyed the generations of them. (For the Lord shall restore the pride of Jacob, and the pride of Israel; for the destroyers scattered them, and destroyed their generations, or their descendants.)
The shield(s) of strong men of him be fiery, men of the host be in red clothes; reins of fire of [the] chariot(s), in the day of his making ready; and the leaders thereof be asleep. (The shields of their strong men be painted fiery red, the men in their army be clothed in red clothes; the reins of the chariots flash like fire, on the day of their preparation for battle; and their leaders be on alert.)
In ways they be troubled together, carts of four horses be hurtled together in streets; the sight of them as lamps, as lightnings running about. (On the ways they make the people altogether troubled, or full of fear, yea, carts with four horses hurtle through the streets; they look like lamps, like lightning running about.)
He shall bethink of his strong men, they shall fall in their ways; and swiftly they shall go up on the walls thereof, and [the] shadowing place shall be made ready. (They shall call out their strong men, and they shall stumble as they hastily make their way forward; but they shall go up swiftly on the walls, and prepare the battering-rams for the siege.)
Gates of floods be opened, and the temple is broken down to [the] earth. (The gates by the river be opened, and the palace is broken into, and falleth down to the ground.)
And a knight is led away captive, and the handmaids thereof shall be driven sorrowing as culvers, grutching in their hearts. (And their horsemen be led away captive, and the slave-girls there be driven away, sorrowing like doves, grumbling in their hearts.)
And Nineveh, as a cistern of waters the waters thereof; forsooth they fled; Stand ye, stand ye, (they cried,) and there is not that shall turn again. (And so Nineveh was made like a water cistern, yea, like its water, as it fled away; Stand ye! stand ye in your place! they cried; but there was no one who turned back.)
Ravish ye silver, ravish ye gold; and there is none end of riches, of all desirable vessels. (Steal ye the silver, rob ye the gold; yea, there is no end of the riches, of all their desirable vessels.)
It is destroyed, and cut, and rent, (or torn), and heart failing, and unknitting of small knees, and failing in all reins; and the face of all be as (the) blackness of a pot.
Where is the dwelling of lions, and [the] pastures of whelps of lions? To which city the lion went, that the whelp of the lion should enter thither, and there is not that shall make afeared. (Where now is the lions’ den, and the pastures of the lion’s cubs? To which city the lion went in first, so that the lion’s cubs could enter in there afterward, and there would be no one who would make them afraid.)
The lion took enough to his whelps, and slew to his lionesses; and filled their dens with prey, and his couch with raven. (The lion took enough for his cubs, and killed prey for his lionesses; yea, he filled their dens with prey, and his lair with spoils.)
Lo! I to thee, saith the Lord God of hosts; and I shall burn thy carts of four horses till to the highest, and sword shall eat thy small lions (Lo! I am against thee, saith the Lord God of hosts; and I shall burn up thy carts with four horses unto smoke, and the sword shall eat thy small lions); and I shall destroy thy prey from the land, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.
Come up hath a scatterer to thy face, Keep the bulwark, watch the way, Strengthen the loins, strengthen power mightily.
For turned back hath Jehovah to the excellency of Jacob, As [to] the excellency of Israel, For emptied them out have emptiers, And their branches they have marred.
The shield of his mighty ones is become red, Men of might [are in] scarlet, With fiery torches [is] the chariot in a day of his preparation, And the firs have been caused to tremble.
In out-places shine do the chariots, They go to and fro in broad places, Their appearances [are] like torches, As lightnings they run.
He doth remember his honourable ones, They stumble in their goings, They hasten [to] its wall, and prepared is the covering.
Gates of the rivers have been opened, And the palace is dissolved.
And it is established -- she hath removed, She hath been brought up, And her handmaids are leading as the voice of doves, Tabering on their hearts.
And Nineveh [is] as a pool of waters, From of old it [is] -- and they are fleeing! `Stand ye, stand;' and none is turning!
Seize ye silver, seize ye gold, And there is no end to the prepared things, [To] the abundance of all desirable vessels.
She is empty, yea, emptiness and waste, And the heart hath melted, And the knees have smitten together, And great pain [is] in all loins, And the faces of all of them have gathered paleness.
Where [is] the habitation of lionesses? And a feeding-place it [is] for young lions Where walked hath a lion, an old lion, A lion's whelp, and there is none troubling.
The lion is tearing parts [for] his whelps, And is strangling for his lionesses, And he doth fill [with] prey his holes, And his habitations [with] rapine.
Lo, I [am] against thee, An affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts, And I have burned in smoke its chariot, And thy young lions consume doth a sword, And I have cut off from the land thy prey, And not heard any more is the voice of thy messengers!
