Nahum 1

The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
God is jealous, and the Lord avengeth; the Lord avengeth and is furious. The Lord will take vengeance on His adversaries, and He reserveth wrath for His enemies.
The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked. The Lord hath His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet.
He rebuketh the sea and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers; Bashan languisheth and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth.
The mountains quake at Him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at His presence, yea, the world and all that dwell therein.
Who can stand before His indignation? And who can abide in the fierceness of His anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by Him.
The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knoweth them that trust in Him.
But with an overrunning flood He will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue His enemies.
What do ye contrive against the Lord? He will make an utter end; affliction shall not rise up the second time.
For while they are folded together as thorns and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.
There is one that comes out of thee, that imagineth evil against the Lord, a wicked counselor.
Thus saith the Lord: “Though they be quiet and likewise many, yet thus shall they be cut down when he shall pass through. Though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more;
for now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds asunder.”
And the Lord hath given a commandment concerning thee, that no more of thy name be sown: “Out of the house of thy gods will I cut off the graven image and the molten image. I will make thy grave, for thou art vile.”
Behold upon the mountains the feet of Him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows; for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.
The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
Jehovah is a jealous God and avengeth; Jehovah avengeth and is full of wrath; Jehovah taketh vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.
Jehovah is slow to anger, and great in power, and will by no means clear the guilty: Jehovah hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel; and the flower of Lebanon languisheth.
The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt; and the earth is upheaved at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein.
Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken asunder by him.
Jehovah is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that take refuge in him.
But with an over-running flood he will make a full end of her place, and will pursue his enemies into darkness.
What do ye devise against Jehovah? he will make a full end; affliction shall not rise up the second time.
For entangled like thorns, and drunken as with their drink, they are consumed utterly as dry stubble.
There is one gone forth out of thee, that deviseth evil against Jehovah, that counselleth wickedness.
Thus saith Jehovah: Though they be in full strength, and likewise many, even so shall they be cut down, and he shall pass away. Though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more.
And now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds in sunder.
And Jehovah hath given commandment concerning thee, that no more of thy name be sown: out of the house of thy gods will I cut off the graven image and the molten image; I will make thy grave; for thou art vile.
Behold, upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! Keep thy feasts, O Judah, perform thy vows; for the wicked one shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.
The oracle (a burdensome message—a pronouncement from God) concerning Nineveh [the capital city of Assyria]. The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh [which he saw in spirit and prophesied].
The Lord is a jealous and avenging God [protecting and demanding what is rightfully and uniquely His]; The Lord avenges and He is full of wrath. The Lord takes vengeance on His adversaries, And He reserves wrath for His enemies.
The Lord is slow to anger and great in power And He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. The Lord has His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, And the clouds are the dust beneath His feet.
He rebukes the sea and dries it up; He dries up all the rivers [illustrating His judgment]. Bashan [on the east] and [Mount] Carmel [on the west] wither, And [in the north] the blossoms of Lebanon fade.
The mountains quake before Him And the hills melt away; Indeed the earth is shaken by His presence— Yes, the world and all that dwell in it.
Who can stand before His indignation [His great wrath]? And who can stand up and endure the fierceness of His anger? His wrath is poured out like fire And the rocks are destroyed by Him.
The Lord is good, A strength and stronghold in the day of trouble; He knows [He recognizes, cares for, and understands fully] those who take refuge and trust in Him.
But with an overwhelming flood [of judgment through invading armies] He will make a complete destruction of its site And will pursue His enemies into darkness.
Whatever [plot] you [Assyrians] devise against the Lord, He will make a complete end of it; Affliction [of God’s people by the hand of Assyria] will not occur twice.
Like tangled thorn branches [gathered for fuel], And like those drowned in drunkenness, The people of Nineveh are consumed [through fire] Like stubble completely withered and dry [in the day of the Lord’s wrath].
From you [O Nineveh], One has gone forth who plotted evil against the Lord, A malevolent counselor [the king of Assyria].
This is what the Lord says, “Though they are at full strength and many in number, Even so, they will be cut off and pass away. Though I have afflicted you and caused you grief [O Jerusalem], I will afflict you no longer.
“Now, I will break his yoke [of taxation] off you, And I will tear off your shackles.”
The Lord has given a command concerning you [O king of Nineveh]: “Your name will no longer be perpetuated. I will cut off the carved idols and cast images From the temple of your gods; I will prepare your grave, For you are vile and unworthy.”
Behold, on the mountains the feet of him who brings good news [telling of Assyria’s destruction], Who announces peace and prosperity! Celebrate your feasts, O Judah; Perform your vows. For the wicked one [the king of Assyria] will never again pass through you; He is completely cut off.
The burden or oracle (the thing to be lifted up) concerning Nineveh [the capital of Assyria]. The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh.
The Lord is a jealous God and avenging; the Lord avenges and He is full of wrath. The Lord takes vengeance on His adversaries and reserves wrath for His enemies.
The Lord is slow to anger and great in power and will by no means clear the guilty. The Lord has His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet.
He rebukes and threatens the sea and makes it dry, and dries up all the rivers. Bashan [on the east] and Mount Carmel [on the west] wither, and [in the north] the blossom of Lebanon fades.
The mountains tremble and quake before Him and the hills melt away, and the earth is upheaved at His presence—yes, the world and all that dwell in it.
Who can stand before His indignation? And who can stand up and endure the fierceness of His anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken asunder by Him.
The Lord is good, a Strength and Stronghold in the day of trouble; He knows (recognizes, has knowledge of, and understands) those who take refuge and trust in Him.
But with an overrunning flood He will make a full end of [Nineveh’s very] site and pursue His enemies into darkness.
What do you devise and [how mad is your attempt to] plot against the Lord? He will make a full end [of Nineveh]; affliction [which My people shall suffer from Assyria] shall not rise up the second time.
For [the Ninevites] are as bundles of thorn branches [for fuel], and even while drowned in their drunken [carousing] they shall be consumed like stubble fully dry [in the day of the Lord’s wrath].
There is one gone forth out of you [O Nineveh] who plots evil against the Lord, a villainous counselor [the king of Assyria, who counsels for wickedness and worthlessness].
Thus says the Lord: Though they be in full strength and likewise many, even so shall [the Assyrians] be cut down when [their evil counselor] shall pass away. Though I have afflicted you [Jerusalem], I will not cause you to be afflicted [for your past sins] any more.
For now will I break his yoke from off you and will burst your bonds asunder.
And the Lord has given a commandment concerning you [evil Assyrian counselor], that no more of your name shall be born nor shall your name be perpetuated. Out of the house of your gods I will cut off the graven and molten images; I will make [their temple] your tomb, for you are vile and despised.
Behold! upon the mountains the feet of him who brings good tidings [telling of the Assyrian’s death], who publishes peace! Celebrate your feasts, O Judah; perform your vows. For the wicked counselor [the king of Assyria] shall no more come against you or pass through your land; he is utterly cut off. [Then the prophet Nahum sarcastically addresses his message to Nineveh:]
The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
God is jealous, and the Lord revengeth; the Lord revengeth, and is furious; the Lord will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.

Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.
The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.
But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.
What do ye imagine against the Lord? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time.
For while they be folden together as thorns, and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.

The pronouncement concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord takes vengeance and is fierce in wrath. The Lord takes vengeance against his foes; he is furious with his enemies.
The Lord is slow to anger but great in power; the Lord will never leave the guilty unpunished. His path is in the whirlwind and storm, and clouds are the dust beneath his feet.
He rebukes the sea and dries it up, and he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither; even the flower of Lebanon withers.
The mountains quake before him, and the hills melt; the earth trembles at his presence— the world and all who live in it.
Who can withstand his indignation? Who can endure his burning anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; even rocks are shattered before him.
The Lord is good, a stronghold in a day of distress; he cares for those who take refuge in him.
But he will completely destroy Nineveh with an overwhelming flood, and he will chase his enemies into darkness.
Whatever you plot against the Lord, he will bring it to complete destruction; oppression will not rise up a second time.
For they will be consumed like entangled thorns, like the drink of a drunkard and like straw that is fully dry.
One has gone out from you, who plots evil against the Lord, and is a wicked counselor.
This is what the Lord says: Though they are strong and numerous, they will still be mowed down, and he will pass away. Though I have punished you, I will punish you no longer.
For I will now break off his yoke from you and tear off your shackles.
The Lord has issued an order concerning you: There will be no offspring to carry on your name. I will eliminate the carved idol and cast image from the house of your gods; I will prepare your grave, for you are contemptible.
Look to the mountains— the feet of the herald, who proclaims peace. Celebrate your festivals, Judah; fulfill your vows. For the wicked one will never again march through you; he will be entirely wiped out.

An oracle about Nineveh: the scroll containing the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
The Lord is a jealous and vengeful God; the Lord is vengeful and strong in wrath. The Lord is vengeful against his foes; he rages against his enemies.
The Lord is very patient but great in power; the Lord punishes. His way is in whirlwind and storm; clouds are the dust of his feet.
He can blast the sea and make it dry up; he can dry up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel wither; the bud of Lebanon withers.
The mountains quake because of him; the hills melt away. The earth heaves before him— the world and all who dwell in it.
Who can stand before his indignation? Who can confront the heat of his fury? His wrath pours out like fire; the rocks are shattered because of him.
The Lord is good, a haven in a day of distress. He acknowledges those who take refuge in him.
With a rushing flood, he will utterly destroy her place and pursue his enemies into darkness.
What are you plotting against the Lord? He is one who can annihilate! Distress will not arise twice.
They are tangled up like thorns, like drunkards in their cups. They are consumed like stubble that is entirely dried up.
From you goes out one who plots evil against the Lord— a worthless counselor!
The Lord proclaims: Though once they were a healthy and numerous force, they have been cut off and have disappeared. I have afflicted you; I won’t afflict you further, Zion.
Now I will break off his yoke from you and tear off your chains.
The Lord has commanded concerning you: You will have no children to carry on your name. I will remove carved idol and cast image from the house of your gods; I will make your grave, for you are worthless.
Look, on the mountains: the feet of a messenger who announces peace! Celebrate your festivals, Judah! Fulfill your solemn promises! The worthless one will never again invade you; he has been completely cut off.
This is a prophecy about Ninveh, the book of the vision of Nachum the Elkoshi:
Adonai is a jealous and vengeful God. Adonai avenges; he knows how to be angry. Adonai takes vengeance on his foes and stores up wrath for his enemies.
Adonai is slow to anger, but great in power; and he does not leave the guilty unpunished. Adonai’s path is in the whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
He rebukes the sea and leaves it dry, he dries up all the rivers. Bashan and the Karmel languish; the flower of the L’vanon withers.
The mountains quake before him, and the hills dissolve; the earth collapses in his presence, the world and everyone living in it.
Who can withstand his fury? Who can endure his fierce anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, the rocks broken to pieces before him.
Adonai is good, a stronghold in time of trouble; he takes care of those who take refuge in him.
But with an overwhelming flood he will make an end of [Ninveh’s] place, and darkness will pursue his enemies.
What are you planning against Adonai? He is making an end [of it]; trouble will not arise a second time.
For like men drunk with liquor, they will be burned up like tangled thorns, like straw completely dry.
Out of you, [Ninveh,] he came, one who plots evil against Adonai, who counsels wickedness.
Here is what Adonai says: “Though they be many and strong, they will be cut down, they will pass; and though I have made you suffer, I will make you suffer no more.
Now I will break his yoke from your necks and snap the chains that bind you.
Adonai gave this order concerning you: you will have no descendants to bear your name; from the house of your god I will cut off carved image and cast metal image; I will prepare your grave, because you are worthless.”
I am Nahum from Elkosh. And this is the message that I wrote down about Nineveh.
The Lord God demands loyalty. In his anger, he takes revenge on his enemies.
The Lord is powerful, yet patient; he makes sure that the guilty are always punished. He can be seen in storms and in whirlwinds; clouds are the dust from his feet.
At the Lord's command, oceans and rivers dry up. Bashan, Mount Carmel, and Lebanon wither, and their flowers fade.
At the sight of the Lord, mountains and hills tremble and melt; the earth and its people shudder and shake.
Who can stand the heat of his furious anger? It flashes out like fire and shatters stones.
The Lord is good. He protects those who trust him in times of trouble.
But like a roaring flood, the Lord chases his enemies into dark places and destroys them.
So don't plot against the Lord! He wipes out his enemies, and they never revive.
They are like drunkards overcome by wine, or like twisted thornbushes burning in a fire.
Assyria, one of your rulers has made evil plans against the Lord.
But the Lord says, “Assyria, no matter how strong you are, you will be cut down! My people Judah, I have troubled you before, but I won't do it again.
I'll snap your chains and set you free from the Assyrians.”
Assyria, this is what else the Lord says to you: “Your name will be forgotten. I will destroy every idol in your temple, and I will send you to the grave, because you are worthless.”
Look toward the mountains, people of Judah! Here comes a messenger with good news of peace. Celebrate your festivals. Keep your promises to God. Your evil enemies are destroyed and will never again invade your country.
The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
A jealous and avenging God is Jehovah: an avenger is Jehovah, and full of fury: Jehovah taketh vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth [wrath] for his enemies.
Jehovah is slow to anger, and great in power, and doth not at all clear [the guilty]: Jehovah,—his way is in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth.
The mountains quake before him, and the hills melt, and the earth is upheaved at his presence, and the world, and all that dwell therein.
Who shall stand before his indignation? and who shall abide in the fierceness of his anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken asunder by him.
Jehovah is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.
But with an overrunning flood he will make a full end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.
What do ye imagine against Jehovah? He will make a full end: trouble shall not rise up the second time.
Though they be tangled together [as] thorns, and be as drenched from their drink, they shall be devoured as dry stubble, completely.
Out of thee is gone forth one that imagineth evil against Jehovah, a wicked counsellor.
Thus saith Jehovah: Though they be complete in number, and many as they be, even so shall they be cut down, and he shall pass away; and though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more.
And now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds asunder.
And Jehovah hath given commandment concerning thee, that no more of thy name be sown: out of the house of thy god will I cut off the graven image, and the molten image: I will prepare thy grave; for thou art vile.
Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth glad tidings, that publisheth peace! Celebrate thy feasts, Judah, perform thy vows: for the wicked one shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.
The burden of Ninive. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elcesite.
The Lord is a jealous God, and a revenger: the Lord is a revenger, and hath wrath: the Lord taketh vengeance on his adversaries, and he is angry with his enemies.
The Lord is patient, and great in power, and will not cleanse and acquit the guilty. The Lord's ways are in a tempest, and a whirlwind, and clouds are the dust of his feet.
He rebuketh the sea, and drieth it up: and bringeth all the rivers to be a desert. Basan languisheth and Carmel: and the flower of Libanus fadeth away.
The mountains tremble at him, and the hills are made desolate: and the earth hath quaked at his presence, and the world, and all that dwell therein.
Who can stand before the face of his indignation? and who shall resist in the fierceness of his anger? his indignation is poured out like fire: and the rocks are melted by him.
The Lord is good and giveth strength in the day of trouble: and knoweth them that hope in him.
But with a flood that passeth by, he will make an utter end of the place thereof: and darkness shall pursue his enemies.
What do ye devise against the Lord? he will make an utter end: there shall not rise a double affliction.
For as thorns embrace one another: so while they are feasting and drinking together, they shall be consumed as stubble that is fully dry.
Out of thee shall come forth one that imagineth evil against the Lord, contriving treachery in his mind.
Thus saith the Lord: Though they were perfect: and many of them so, yet thus shall they be cut off, and he shall pass: I have afflicted thee, and I will afflict thee no more.
And now I will break in pieces his rod with which he struck thy back, and I will burst thy bonds asunder.
And the Lord will give a commandment concerning thee, that no more of thy name shall be sown: I will destroy the graven and molten thing out of the house of thy God, I will make it thy grave, for thou art disgraced.
Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, and that preacheth peace: O Juda, keep thy festivals, and pay thy vows: for Belial shall no more pass through thee again, he is utterly cut off.
This book is the vision of Nahum from Elkosh. This is the sad message about the city of Nineveh.
The Lord is a jealous God. The Lord punishes the guilty, and he is very angry. The Lord punishes his enemies, and he stays angry with them.
The Lord is patient, but he is also very powerful! The Lord will punish the guilty; he will not let them go free. He will use whirlwinds and storms to show his power. People walk on the dusty ground, but he walks on the clouds.
He will speak harshly to the sea, and it will become dry. He will dry up all the rivers. The rich lands of Bashan and Carmel become dry and dead. The flowers in Lebanon fade away.
The Lord will come, and the mountains will shake and the hills will melt away. He will come, and the earth will shake with fear. The earth and everyone on it will shake with fear.
No one can stand against his great anger. No one can endure his terrible anger. His anger will burn like fire. The rocks will shatter when he comes.
The Lord is good. He is a safe place to go to in times of trouble. He takes care of those who trust him.
But he will completely destroy his enemies. He will wash them away like a flood and chase them into the darkness.
Why are you making plans against the Lord? He will bring complete destruction, so you will not cause trouble again.
You will be destroyed completely like thornbushes burning under a pot. You will be destroyed like dry weeds that burn quickly.
Someone from Nineveh is making evil plans against the Lord. That advisor is a worthless troublemaker.
This is what the Lord said: “The people of Assyria are at full strength. They have many soldiers, but they will all be cut down. They will all be finished. My people, I made you suffer, but I will make you suffer no more.
Now I will set you free from the power of Assyria. I will take the yoke off your neck and tear away the chains holding you.”
King of Assyria, the Lord gave this command about you: “You will not have any descendants to wear your name. I will destroy your carved idols and metal statues that are in the temple of your gods. I am preparing your grave, because your end is coming soon!”
Judah, look! There, coming over the mountains, is a messenger bringing good news! He says there is peace. Judah, celebrate your special festivals and do what you promised. Those worthless troublemakers will not come through and attack you again. They have all been destroyed.
Nahum lives in Elkosh and this is his prophecy about the people in Nineveh.
God is angry with the people in Nineveh. The Lord loves his people. But he is very angry with his enemies. He is so angry with them that he must punish them. He will be angry until he has killed his enemies.
The Lord will punish those who do wrong things. But he does not get angry quickly. He is a powerful God. The Lord does not get angry quickly. But he gets angry when people do wrong things. Then he punishes those people. He is very powerful. You can see his power in the wind and the storms. The clouds are like dust that his feet shake.
He can cause the sea and the rivers to become dry by one word. The fertile places of Bashan and Carmel become dry and the green forests of Lebanon die too.
He causes the mountains to shake and he causes the hills to become flat. The earth and all the people in the world are afraid of God.
Nobody can fight God when he is very angry. The Lord pours his anger out like fire and he breaks the rocks in his path.
The Lord loves those who believe him. When they are in trouble, they can put their hope in God.
But the people in Nineveh are his enemies and he will kill them.
The Lord will stop anything that you decide to do immediately. He does not let his enemies have a second chance.
He will kill them. And then it will be like when thorn bushes have caught people. Or it will be like when they have drunk too much alcohol. It will be like when someone burns dry straw.
The Lord tells the king of Nineveh that he has done bad things against God. And the king has told his people that they should do wrong things.
The Lord has said, ‘The people in Nineveh are many. And they think that they are safe. But I will kill them. I have punished you, my people, before now. But I will not punish you any more.
Now I will make you free from the people from Nineveh. And I will break the things that are holding you like iron.’
Nineveh, the Lord has said what will happen to you. He has said, ‘You will have no children and your family name will have an end. I will destroy the statues that you made from wood and metal. You worship those statues in your temples. There I will make graves for you because you are bad.’
People in Judah, look at the mountains. You will see the feet of the person who will bring good news. He causes peace. You can have your special festivals again now. And now you can do what you promised to me. The bad people will not win a war against you because I have killed them.
A threatening oracle against Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum from Elkosh.
The Lord is a jealous and avenging God. The Lord takes vengeance and displays his anger. The Lord takes vengeance against his adversaries. He will maintain his rage against his enemies.
The Lord is slow to anger, yet great in power. The Lord will certainly not let the guilty go unpunished. He marches out in the whirlwind and in the storm. Storm clouds are like dust stirred up by his feet.
He rebukes the sea and makes it dry up. He makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel are completely withered. The buds of Lebanon are completely withered.
The mountains quake in front of him. The hills melt away. The earth in front of him rises up, the whole world and all who live in it.
Who can withstand his anger? Who can resist his fury? His rage is poured out like fire, and the rocks are torn down by him.
The Lord is good. He is a place of safety in the day of distress. He knows those who seek safety in him,
but he will bring this place to a complete end by an overwhelming flood. He will drive his enemies into darkness.
No matter what you plot against the Lord, he will destroy your plot completely. Disaster will not need to strike them twice,
because like tangled thorns, like the liquor of drunkards, like fully dried stubble, they will be consumed.
Someone who plots evil against the Lord has gone out from you, but his wicked plans are worthless.
This is what the Lord says. Even though they are at full strength and are numerous, nevertheless they are sure to be cut off, and they will disappear. Even though I have humbled you, I will not humble you any longer.
Now I will break their yoke from your neck. I will tear apart the shackles that are on you.
The Lord has issued a decree against you: There will be no descendants to carry on your name. I will put an end to the carved idols and molten images in the temple of your gods. I will dig your grave because you are cursed.
Look! A herald is coming over the mountain to proclaim this good news: Peace! Celebrate your sacred festivals, Judah! Fulfill your sacred vows to praise God! For never again will wickedness overwhelm you. It has been completely destroyed.
An oracle concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh.
The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord is avenging and wrathful; the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies.
The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; he dries up all the rivers; Bashan and Carmel wither; the bloom of Lebanon withers.

What do you plot against the Lord? He will make a complete end; trouble will not rise up a second time.
For they are like entangled thorns, like drunkards as they drink; they are consumed like stubble fully dried.
From you came one who plotted evil against the Lord, a worthless counselor.
Thus says the Lord, “Though they are at full strength and many, they will be cut down and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more.
And now I will break his yoke from off you and will burst your bonds apart.”
The Lord has given commandment about you: “No more shall your name be perpetuated; from the house of your gods I will cut off the carved image and the metal image. I will make your grave, for you are vile.”
Behold, upon the mountains, the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace! Keep your feasts, O Judah; fulfill your vows, for never again shall the worthless pass through you; he is utterly cut off.
The mountains quake before him; the hills melt; the earth heaves before him, the world and all who dwell in it.
Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him.
The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.
But with an overflowing flood he will make a complete end of the adversaries, and will pursue his enemies into darkness.
What do you plot against the Lord? He will make a complete end; trouble will not rise up a second time.
For they are like entangled thorns, like drunkards as they drink; they are consumed like stubble fully dried.
From you came one who plotted evil against the Lord, a worthless counsellor.
Thus says the Lord, “Though they are at full strength and many, they will be cut down and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more.

·No one [L Who…?] can ·stay alive [withstand/stand before] ·when he is angry [his indignation/anger]; no one can ·survive [endure] his ·strong [fierce; burning] anger. His ·anger [wrath] is poured out like fire; the rocks ·are smashed by [crumble before] him.

The Lord will completely destroy ·anyone making plans [or whatever you plot/conspire] against him. Trouble will not come a second time.
Those people will be ·like tangled [or entangled among] thorns or like people drunk from their wine; they will be ·burned up quickly [consumed] like ·dry weeds [stubble].
Someone has come from ·Nineveh [L you] who ·makes evil plans [plots evil] against the Lord and gives wicked ·advice [counsel; strategy].
This is what the Lord says: “Although Assyria ·is strong [or has allies] and has many people, it will be ·defeated [destroyed] and ·brought to an end [pass away]. Although I have ·made you suffer, Judah [L afflicted you], I will ·make you suffer [afflict you] no more.

Of the destruction of the Assyrians, and of the deliverance of Israel. The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
God is jealous, and the Lord revengeth: the Lord revengeth: even the Lord of anger, the Lord will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.
The Lord is slow to anger, but he is great in power, and will not surely clear the wicked: the Lord hath his way in the whirlwind, and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
He rebuketh the sea, and drieth it, and he drieth up all the rivers: Bashan is wasted and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon is wasted.
The mountains tremble for him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burnt at his sight, yea the world, and all that dwell therein.
Who can stand before his wrath? or who can abide in the fierceness of his wrath? his wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken by him.
The Lord is good and as a stronghold in the day of trouble, and he knoweth them that trust in him.
But passing over as with a flood, he will utterly destroy the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.
What do ye imagine against the Lord? he will make an utter destruction: affliction shall not rise up the second time.
For he shall come as unto thorns folden one in another, and as unto drunkards in their drunken-ness: they shall be devoured as stubble fully dried.
There cometh one out of thee that imagineth evil against the Lord, even a wicked counselor.
Thus saith the Lord, Though they be quiet, and also many, yet thus shall they be cut off when he shall pass by: though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more.
For now I will break his yoke from thee, and will burst thy bonds in sunder.
And the Lord hath given a commandment concerning thee that no more of thy name be sown: out of the house of thy gods will I cut off the graven, and the molten image: I will make it thy grave for thee, for thou art vile.
Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that declareth, and publisheth peace: O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee: he is utterly cut off.
This is a revelation from the Lord about Nineveh. This book contains the vision of Nahum from Elkosh.
God does not tolerate rivals. The Lord takes revenge. The Lord takes revenge and is full of anger. The Lord takes revenge against his enemies and holds a grudge against his foes.
The Lord is patient and has great strength. The Lord will never let the guilty go unpunished. Raging winds and storms mark his path, and clouds are the dust from his feet.
He yells at the sea and makes it dry. He dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel wither. The flowers of Lebanon wither.
The mountains quake because of him. The hills melt. The earth draws back in his presence. The world and all who live in it draw back as well.
Who can stand in the presence of his rage? Who can oppose his burning anger? He pours out his rage like fire and smashes the rocky cliffs.
The Lord is good. ⌞He is⌟ a fortress in the day of trouble. He knows those who seek shelter in him.
He will put an end to Nineveh with a devastating flood. He will pursue his enemies with darkness.
What do you think about the Lord? He is the one who will bring Nineveh to an end. This trouble will never happen again.
⌞The people of Nineveh will be⌟ like tangled thorns and like people drunk on their own drink. They will be completely burned up like very dry straw.
From you, Nineveh, a person who plans evil against the Lord sets out. His advice is wicked.
This is what the Lord says: Though the people of Nineveh are physically fit and many in number, they will be cut down and die. Though I have humbled you, Judah, I will not humble you again.
But now I will break Nineveh’s yoke  off of you and tear its chains from you.
The Lord has given this command about you, Nineveh: You will no longer have descendants to carry on your name. I will remove the wooden and metal idols from the temple of your gods. I will prepare your grave because you are worthless.
There on the mountains are the feet of a messenger who announces the good news: “All is well!” Celebrate your festivals, Judah! Keep your vows! This wickedness will never pass your way again. It will be completely removed.
This is a message about Nineveh, the account of a vision seen by Nahum, who was from Elkosh.
The Lord God tolerates no rivals; he punishes those who oppose him. In his anger he pays them back.
The Lord does not easily become angry, but he is powerful and never lets the guilty go unpunished. Where the Lord walks, storms arise; the clouds are the dust raised by his feet!
He commands the sea, and it dries up! He makes the rivers go dry. The fields of Bashan wither, Mount Carmel turns brown, and the flowers of Lebanon fade.
Mountains quake in the presence of the Lord; hills melt before him. The earth shakes when the Lord appears; the world and all its people tremble.
When he is angry, who can survive? Who can survive his terrible fury? He pours out his flaming anger; rocks crumble to dust before him.
The Lord is good; he protects his people in times of trouble; he takes care of those who turn to him.
Like a great rushing flood he completely destroys his enemies; he sends to their death those who oppose him.
What are you plotting against the Lord? He will destroy you. No one opposes him more than once.
Like tangled thorns and dry straw you drunkards will be burned up!
From you, Nineveh, there came someone full of wicked schemes, who plotted against the Lord.
This is what the Lord says to his people Israel: “Even though the Assyrians are strong and numerous, they will be destroyed and disappear. My people, I made you suffer, but I will not do it again.
I will now end Assyria's power over you and break the chains that bind you.”
This is what the Lord has decreed about the Assyrians: “They will have no descendants to carry on their name. I will destroy the idols that are in the temples of their gods. I am preparing a grave for the Assyrians—they don't deserve to live!”
Look, a messenger is coming over the mountains with good news! He is on his way to announce the victory! People of Judah, celebrate your festivals and give God what you solemnly promised him. The wicked will never invade your land again. They have been totally destroyed!
The oracle concerning Nineveh.
He rebukes the sea so that it dries up, and He makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither; even the flower of Lebanon withers.
The mountains quake before Him, and the hills melt; the earth trembles at His presence— the world and all who live in it.
Who can withstand His indignation? Who can endure His burning anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, even rocks are shattered before Him.
One has gone out from you, who plots evil against Yahweh, and is a wicked counselor.
This is what the Lord says: Though they are strong and numerous, they will still be mowed down, and he will pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no longer.
For I will now break off his yoke from you and tear off your shackles.
The Lord has issued an order concerning you: There will be no offspring to carry on your name. I will eliminate the carved idol and cast image from the house of your gods; I will prepare your grave, for you are contemptible.
Look to the mountains— the feet of one bringing good news and proclaiming peace! Celebrate your festivals, Judah; fulfill your vows. For the wicked one will never again march through you; he will be entirely wiped out.
This is the message for the city of Nineveh. This is the vision of Nahum, who was from the town of Elkosh.
The Lord is a jealous God who gives punishment. The Lord punishes wicked people and is filled with anger. The Lord punishes those who are against him. He stays angry with his enemies.
The Lord does not become angry quickly. His power is great. The Lord will not let the guilty go unpunished. Where the Lord goes, whirlwinds and storms show his power. The clouds are the dust that his feet kick up.
The Lord speaks to the sea and makes it dry. He dries up all the rivers. The areas of Bashan and Carmel dry up. And the flowers of Lebanon die.
He shakes the mountains and makes the hills melt away. The earth trembles when he comes. The world and all who live in it shake with fear.
No one can stay alive when the Lord is angry with him. No one can survive his strong anger. His anger is poured out like fire. He smashes rocks that are in his path.
The Lord is good. He gives protection in times of trouble. He knows who trusts in him.
But he will completely destroy the city of Nineveh. An army will come like a rushing flood. The Lord will chase his enemies until he kills them.
The Lord will completely destroy the plans that are made against him. Trouble will not come a second time.
Those people will be like tangled thorns or like people drunk from their wine. They will be destroyed quickly like dry weeds.
Someone has come from Nineveh. He makes evil plans against the Lord. And he gives wicked advice.
This is what the Lord says: “Assyria is strong and has many people. But it will be defeated and brought to an end. Judah, I have punished you, my people. But I will punish you no more.
Now I will free you from their control. And I will tear away the chains with which they hold you.”
The Lord has given you this command, Nineveh: “You will not have descendants to carry on your name. I will destroy the idols and metal images that are in the temple of your gods. I will dig your grave because you are wicked.”
Look, there on the hills, someone is bringing good news! He is announcing peace! Celebrate your feasts, people of Judah. And do what you promised to God. The wicked will not attack you again. They have been completely destroyed.
A pronouncement about Nineveh: The record of the vision of Nahum from Elkosh.
A jealous God, the Lord avenges. The Lord avenges; The Lord is an angry husband. The Lord takes vengeance on his enemies, reserving anger for his adversaries.
The Lord is slow to anger and powerful, and he will never let the guilty go unpunished. The Lord’s path is in the windstorm and hurricane; thunderclouds are dust beneath his feet.
He rebukes the sea, and it evaporates; he dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel wither, while the flowers of Lebanon languish.
Mountains shake because of him, and the hills melt. The earth goes into upheaval at his presence, as does the world with all of its inhabitants.
Who can stand before his fury? And who can endure his fierce anger? His displeasure pours out like fire, and rocks are broken to pieces because of him.
The Lord is good— a refuge in troubled times. He knows those who are confiding in him.
But with an overwhelming deluge he will bring utter desolation to Nineveh, and his enemies he will pursue with darkness.
What are you scheming against the Lord? He will bring about utter desolation— adversity will not strike twice!
Indeed, while tangled as by a thorn bush, while drunken as by a strong drink, the Ninevites will be burned like dry straw.
Someone has left you who plans evil against the Lord. He is a demonic counselor.
This is what the Lord says: “No matter how strong they are, and no matter how numerous, they will surely be annihilated and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will do so no more.
Now I will break off Assyria’s yoke from you, and tear apart your shackles.”
Now this is what the Lord has decreed about you, Nineveh: “There will be no more children born to carry on your name. I will cut out the graven and molten images from the temples of your gods. I myself will dig your grave, because you are vile.”
Look! There on the mountains! The feet of the one who brings good news, who broadcasts a message of peace. Judah, celebrate your solemn festivals and keep your vows, because the wicked will never again invade you. Nineveh will be completely eliminated!

The oracle of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
A jealous and avenging God is Yahweh; Yahweh is avenging and wrathful. Yahweh is avenging against His adversaries, And He keeps His anger for His enemies.
Yahweh is slow to anger and great in power, And Yahweh will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.
In whirlwind and storm is His way, And clouds are the dust beneath His feet. He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; He dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel languish; The blossoms of Lebanon languish.
Mountains quake because of Him,
And the hills melt; Indeed the earth is upheaved by His presence, The world and all the inhabitants in it. Who can stand before His indignation? Who can endure the burning of His anger?
His wrath is poured out like fire, And the rocks are torn down by Him. Yahweh is good, A strong defense in the day of distress,
And He knows those who take refuge in Him. But with an overflowing flood
He will make a complete destruction of its place And will pursue His enemies into darkness. Whatever you devise against Yahweh, He will make a complete destruction of it. Distress will not rise up twice.
Like tangled thorns, And like those who are drunken with their drink, They are consumed As stubble fully dried up.
From you has gone forth One who devised evil against Yahweh, A vile counselor.
Thus says Yahweh, “Though they are at full strength and likewise many, Even so, they will be cut off and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no longer.
So now, I will break his yoke bar from upon you, And I will break your bands apart.”
And Yahweh has commanded concerning you: “There will no longer be seed from your name. From the house of your gods, I will cut off graven image and molten image. I will prepare your grave, For you are contemptible.”
Behold, on the mountains the feet of him who proclaims good news, Who announces peace! Celebrate your feasts, O Judah; Pay your vows. For never again will the vile one pass through you; He is cut off completely.
The oracle concerning Nineveh— the scroll of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite:
Yahweh is a jealous God and avenging; Yahweh is avenging and full of wrath. Yahweh takes vengeance against his enemies; he rages against his adversaries.
Yahweh is slow to anger but great in power; he will certainly not allow the guilty to go unpunished. He marches in storm wind and in gale; storm clouds are the dust of his feet.
He rebukes the sea and he dries up the rivers; he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither; the blossom of Lebanon languishes.
Mountains quake before him; the hills shake apart. The earth heaves before him— the world and all her inhabitants.
His indignation—who can stand before it? Who can endure his fierce anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; rocks are shattered before him.
Yahweh is good—a refuge in the day of distress; he knows those who take refuge in him.
But with a rushing torrent he will bring Nineveh to an end; he will chase his enemies into darkness.
What do you plot against Yahweh? He will completely destroy it; trouble will not rise up a second time!
For like entangled thorns, and like their drink which is drunk, they will be consumed like fully dry chaff.
From you goes out one who plots evil against Yahweh, one who plans wickedness.
Yahweh says this: “Even though they are powerful and likewise many, even so they will be cut off and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no longer.
And now, I will break his yoke from upon you; I will snap your bonds.”
Yahweh has commanded concerning you: “Your name will no longer be sown. I will cut off the idols and images from the temple of your gods; I will send you to the grave because you are worthless.”
Look! On the mountains! The feet of the one who brings good tidings, the one who proclaims peace! “Celebrate a festival, O Judah, Fulfill your vows! For he will not invade you again; the wicked one is cut off completely!”
This is the vision God gave to Nahum, who lived in Elkosh, concerning the impending doom of Nineveh:
God is jealous over those he loves; that is why he takes vengeance on those who hurt them. He furiously destroys their enemies.
He is slow in getting angry, but when aroused, his power is incredible, and he does not easily forgive. He shows his power in the terrors of the cyclone and the raging storms; clouds are billowing dust beneath his feet!
At his command the oceans and rivers become dry sand; the lush pastures of Bashan and Carmel fade away; the green forests of Lebanon wilt.
In his presence mountains quake and hills melt; the earth crumbles, and its people are destroyed.
Who can stand before an angry God? His fury is like fire; the mountains tumble down before his anger.
The Lord is good. When trouble comes, he is the place to go! And he knows everyone who trusts in him!
But he sweeps away his enemies with an overwhelming flood; he pursues them all night long.
What are you thinking of, Nineveh, to defy the Lord? He will stop you with one blow; he won’t need to strike again.
He tosses his enemies into the fire like a tangled mass of thorns. They burst into flames like straw.
Who is this king of yours who dares to plot against the Lord?
But the Lord is not afraid of him! “Though he build his army millions strong,” the Lord declares, “it will vanish. “O my people, I have punished you enough!
Now I will break your chains and release you from the yoke of slavery to this Assyrian king.”
And to the king he says, “I have ordered an end to your dynasty; your sons will never sit upon your throne. And I will destroy your gods and temples, and I will bury you! For how you stink with sin!”
See, the messengers come running down the mountains with glad news: “The invaders have been wiped out and we are safe!” O Judah, proclaim a day of thanksgiving and worship only the Lord, as you have vowed. For this enemy from Nineveh will never come again. He is cut off forever; he will never be seen again.
A report on the problem of Nineveh, the way God gave Nahum of Elkosh to see it:
God is serious business. He won’t be trifled with. He avenges his foes. He stands up against his enemies, fierce and raging. But God doesn’t lose his temper. He’s powerful, but it’s a patient power. Still, no one gets by with anything. Sooner or later, everyone pays. Tornadoes and hurricanes are the wake of his passage, Storm clouds are the dust he shakes off his feet. He yells at the sea: It dries up. All the rivers run dry. The Bashan and Carmel mountains shrivel, the Lebanon orchards shrivel. Mountains quake in their roots, hills dissolve into mud flats. Earth shakes in fear of God. The whole world’s in a panic. Who can face such towering anger? Who can stand up to this fierce rage? His anger spills out like a river of lava, his fury shatters boulders.
God is good, a hiding place in tough times. He recognizes and welcomes anyone looking for help, No matter how desperate the trouble. But cozy islands of escape He wipes right off the map. No one gets away from God. Why waste time conniving against God? He’s putting an end to all such scheming. For troublemakers, no second chances. Like a pile of dry brush, Soaked in oil, they’ll go up in flames.
Nineveh’s an anthill of evil plots against God, A think tank for lies that seduce and betray.
And God has something to say about all this: “Even though you’re on top of the world, With all the applause and all the votes, you’ll be mowed down flat. “I’ve afflicted you, Judah, true, but I won’t afflict you again. From now on I’m taking the yoke from your neck and splitting it up for kindling. I’m cutting you free from the ropes of your bondage.” * * *
God’s orders on Nineveh: “You’re the end of the line. It’s all over with Nineveh. I’m gutting your temple. Your gods and goddesses go in the trash. I’m digging your grave. It’s an unmarked grave. You’re nothing—no, you’re less than nothing!”
Look! Striding across the mountains— a messenger bringing the latest good news: peace! A holiday, Judah! Celebrate! Worship and recommit to God! No more worries about this enemy. This one is history. Close the books.
An oracle for Nineveh, a writing of the vision of Nahum, the Elkoshite.
The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord avenges and is furious. The Lord takes vengeance on His enemies, and He reserves it for His adversaries;
the Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and the Lord will in no way acquit the guilty. In gale winds and a storm is His way, and clouds are the dust of His feet.
He rebukes and dries up the sea, and He makes waterless all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel wither up, and the sprout of Lebanon wastes away.
The mountains quake before Him, and the hills melt; the land rises up before Him, the earth and everything that dwells on it.
Who can stand before His anger? Who will rise up before His burning wrath? His heat is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken up before Him.
The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of distress; and He knows those who take refuge in Him.
As a flood running forth, He will bring to an end the distress, and He will pursue His adversaries into darkness.
Why do you all scheme against the Lord? He will bring it to an end. It will not rise up a second time.
Because they are like interwoven thorns and as drunkards imbibing, they are consumed like completely dry stubble.
Out of you, O Nineveh, comes one, a worthless counselor, who devises evil against the Lord.
So the Lord says: “Even though they are full and many, they will be cut down, and it will pass away. Even though I have afflicted you, I will no longer afflict you, O Judah;
now I will break apart his yoke from over you, and I will tear apart your bonds.”
The Lord has given a command concerning you: “No longer will your name go forth. I will cut off the carved image and metal image from the house of your gods. I will prepare your grave, for you are despised.”
Look, on the mountains come the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace! Make your feasts, O Judah, and complete your vows. For the wicked one will never again pass through your midst; he is completely cut down.
This is a revelation from the Lord about Nineveh. This book contains the vision of Nahum from Elkosh.
El Kanna. Yahweh takes revenge. Yahweh takes revenge and is full of anger. Yahweh takes revenge against his enemies and holds a grudge against his foes.
Yahweh is patient and has great strength. Yahweh will never let the guilty go unpunished.
Yahweh is good. He is a fortress in the day of trouble. He knows those who seek shelter in him.
He will put an end to Nineveh with a devastating flood. He will pursue his enemies with darkness.
What do you think about Yahweh? He is the one who will bring Nineveh to an end. This trouble will never happen again.
The people of Nineveh will be like tangled thorns and like people drunk on their own drink. They will be completely burned up like very dry straw.
From you, Nineveh, a person who plans evil against Yahweh sets out. His advice is wicked.
This is what Yahweh says: Though the people of Nineveh are physically fit and many in number, they will be cut down and die. Though I have humbled you, Judah, I will not humble you again.
But now I will break Nineveh’s yoke off of you and tear its chains from you.
Yahweh has given this command about you, Nineveh: You will no longer have descendants to carry on your name.
Oracle concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh.
A jealous and avenging God is the Lord, an avenger is the Lord, full of wrath; The Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries, and rages against his enemies;
The Lord is slow to anger, yet great in power; the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished. In stormwind and tempest he comes, and clouds are the dust at his feet;
He roars at the sea and leaves it dry, and all the rivers he dries up. Laid low are Bashan and Carmel, and the bloom of Lebanon withers;
The mountains quake before him, and the hills dissolve; The earth is laid waste before him, the world and all who dwell in it.
Before his wrath, who can stand firm, and who can face his blazing anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and boulders break apart before him.
The Lord is good to those who wait for him, a refuge on the day of distress, Taking care of those who look to him for protection,
when the flood rages; He makes an end of his opponents, and pursues his enemies into darkness.
What do you plot against the Lord, the one about to bring total destruction? No opponent rises a second time!
Like a thorny thicket, they are tangled, and like drunkards, they are drunk; like dry stubble, they are utterly consumed.
From you has come one plotting evil against the Lord, one giving sinister counsel.
Thus says the Lord: though fully intact and so numerous, they shall be mown down and disappear. Though I have humbled you, I will humble you no more.
Now I will break his yoke off of you, and tear off your bonds.
The Lord has commanded regarding you: no descendant will again bear your name; From the house of your gods I will abolish the carved and the molten image; I will make your grave a dung heap.

Mountains quake because of Him, And the hills come apart; Indeed the earth is upheaved by His presence, The world and all the inhabitants in it.
Who can stand before His indignation? Who can endure the burning of His anger? His wrath gushes forth like fire, And the rocks are broken up by Him.
The Lord is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble, And He knows those who take refuge in Him.
But with an overflowing flood He will make a complete end of its site, And will pursue His enemies into darkness.
Whatever you devise against the Lord, He will make a complete end of it. Distress will not rise up twice.
Like tangled thorns, And like those who are drunken with their drink, They are consumed Like stubble completely dried up.
From you has gone out One who plotted evil against the Lord, A wicked counselor.
This is what the Lord says: “Though they are at full strength and so they are many, So also they will be cut off and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no longer.
So now, I will break his yoke from upon you, And I will tear your shackles to pieces.”
The Lord has issued a command concerning you: “Your name will no longer be perpetuated. I will eliminate the carved image and the cast metal image From the house of your gods. I will prepare your grave, For you are contemptible.”
Behold, on the mountains, the feet of him who brings good news, Who announces peace! Celebrate your feasts, Judah, Pay your vows. For never again will the wicked one pass through you; He is eliminated completely.

Thus says the Lord, “Though they are at full strength and likewise many, Even so, they will be cut off and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no longer.
“So now, I will break his yoke bar from upon you, And I will tear off your shackles.”

This is an oracle about Nineveh, the book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh.
This is an oracle about Nineveh, the book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh. The Lord is a jealous God who does not hesitate to wreak vengeance or to show his anger. The Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries and stores up wrath against his enemies.
The Lord is slow to anger but great in power, and he will never allow the guilty to escape punishment. He makes his way in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust beneath his feet.
He rebukes the sea and leaves it dry, and he dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel wither, and the greenery of Lebanon fades.
The mountains quake before him, and the hills dissolve; the earth collapses before him, the world and all who live in it.
When confronted by his anger, who can stand firm? Who can endure his burning wrath? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are shattered before him.
The Lord is good, an unfailing refuge in a time of distress. He takes care of those who place their trust in him,
even if they are in peril from a raging flood. He will make an end of those who oppose him, and he will pursue his enemies into darkness.
Why do you devise plots against the Lord? He will make an end of you. None of his adversaries rise up to confront him for a second time.
Like a thicket of thornbushes, they are entangled; like dry straw they will be utterly consumed.
From your number, one has emerged who plots evil against the Lord and counsels wickedness.
Thus says the Lord: No matter how numerous they are, no matter how great their strength, they will be cut down and pass away. Even though I have afflicted you, I will make you suffer no more.
Now I will break off their yoke from your neck and snap the shackles that bind you.
In regard to you, Nineveh, the Lord has decreed that no more descendants will be born to perpetuate your name. I will remove carved images and sculpted idols from the temple of your gods. And I will prepare your grave, for you are worthless.
This is the message for the city of Nineveh. This is the book of the vision of Nahum, who was from the town of Elkosh.
The Lord is a jealous God who punishes; the Lord punishes and is filled with anger. The Lord punishes those who are against him, and he stays angry with his enemies.
The Lord does not become angry quickly, and his power is great. The Lord will not let the guilty go unpunished. Where the Lord goes, there are whirlwinds and storms, and the clouds are the dust beneath his feet.
He speaks to the sea and makes it dry; he dries up all the rivers. The areas of Bashan and Carmel dry up, and the flowers of Lebanon dry up.
The mountains shake in front of him, and the hills melt. The earth trembles when he comes; the world and all who live in it shake with fear.
No one can stay alive when he is angry; no one can survive his strong anger. His anger is poured out like fire; the rocks are smashed by him.
The Lord is good, giving protection in times of trouble. He knows who trusts in him.
But like a rushing flood, he will completely destroy Nineveh; he will chase his enemies until he kills them.
The Lord will completely destroy anyone making plans against him. Trouble will not come a second time.
Those people will be like tangled thorns or like people drunk from their wine; they will be burned up quickly like dry weeds.
Someone has come from Nineveh who makes evil plans against the Lord and gives wicked advice.
This is what the Lord says: “Although Assyria is strong and has many people, it will be defeated and brought to an end. Although I have made you suffer, Judah, I will make you suffer no more.
Now I will free you from their control and tear away your chains.”
The Lord has given you this command, Nineveh: “You will not have descendants to carry on your name. I will destroy the idols and metal images that are in the temple of your gods. I will make a grave for you, because you are wicked.”
Look, there on the hills, someone is bringing good news! He is announcing peace! Celebrate your feasts, people of Judah, and give your promised sacrifices to God. The wicked will not come to attack you again; they have been completely destroyed.
This is an oracle about Nineveh; the book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite:
The Lord is a zealous and avenging God; the Lord is avenging and very angry. The Lord takes vengeance against his foes; he sustains his rage against his enemies.
The Lord is slow to anger but great in power; the Lord will certainly not allow the wicked to go unpunished. He marches out in the whirlwind and the raging storm; dark storm clouds billow like dust under his feet.
He shouts a battle cry against the sea and makes it dry up; he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither; the blossom of Lebanon withers.
The mountains tremble before him, the hills convulse; the earth is laid waste before him, the world and all its inhabitants are laid waste.
No one can withstand his indignation! No one can resist his fierce anger! His wrath is poured out like volcanic fire, boulders are broken up as he approaches.
The Lord is good— indeed, he is a fortress in time of distress, and he protects those who seek refuge in him.
But with an overwhelming flood he will make a complete end of Nineveh; he will drive his enemies into darkness.
Whatever you plot against the Lord, he will completely destroy! Distress will not arise a second time.
Surely they will be totally consumed like entangled thorn bushes, like the drink of drunkards, like very dry stubble.
From you, O Nineveh, one has marched forth who plots evil against the Lord, a wicked military strategist.
This is what the Lord says: “Even though they are powerful— and what is more, even though their army is numerous— nevertheless, they will be destroyed and trickle away! Although I afflicted you, I will afflict you no more.
And now, I will break Assyria’s yoke bar from your neck; I will tear apart the shackles that are on you.”
The Lord has issued a decree against you: “Your dynasty will come to an end. I will destroy the idols and images in the temples of your gods. I will desecrate your grave, because you are accursed!”
(2:1) Look! A herald is running on the mountains! A messenger is proclaiming deliverance: “Celebrate your sacred festivals, O Judah! Fulfill your sacred vows to praise God! For never again will the wicked Assyrians invade you; they have been completely destroyed.”
Here is a prophecy the Lord gave Nahum, who was from the town of Elkosh. The prophecy came in a vision and is written in a book. The prophecy is about Nineveh.
The Lord is a jealous God who punishes people. He pays them back for the evil things they do. He directs his anger against them. The Lord punishes his enemies. He holds his anger back until the right time to use it.
The Lord is slow to get angry. But he is very powerful. The Lord will not let guilty people go without punishing them. When he marches out, he stirs up winds and storms. Clouds are the dust kicked up by his feet.
He controls the seas. He dries them up. He makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Mount Carmel dry up. The flowers in Lebanon fade.
He causes the mountains to shake. The hills melt away. The earth trembles because he is there. The world and all those who live in it also tremble.
Who can stand firm when his anger burns? Who can live when he is angry? His anger blazes out like fire. He smashes the rocks to pieces.
The Lord is good. When people are in trouble, they can go to him for safety. He takes good care of those who trust in him.
But he will destroy Nineveh with a powerful flood. He will chase his enemies into the place of darkness.
The Lord will put an end to anything they plan against him. He won’t allow Assyria to win the battle over his people a second time.
His enemies will be tangled up among thorns. Their wine will make them drunk. They’ll be burned up like dry straw.
Nineveh, a king has marched out from you. He makes evil plans against the Lord. He thinks about how he can do what is wrong.
The Lord says, “His army has many soldiers. Other nations are helping them. But they will be destroyed and pass away. Judah, I punished you. But I will not do it anymore.
Now I will break Assyria’s yoke off your neck. I will tear off the ropes that hold you.”
Nineveh, the Lord has given an order concerning you. He has said, “You will not have any children to carry on your name. I will destroy the wooden and metal statues that are in the temple of your gods. I will get your grave ready for you. You are worthless.”
Look at the mountains of Judah! I see a messenger running to bring good news! He’s telling us that peace has come! People of Judah, celebrate your feasts. Carry out your promises. The evil Assyrians won’t attack you again. They’ll be completely destroyed.

The burden against Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
God is jealous, and the Lord avenges; The Lord avenges and is furious. The Lord will take vengeance on His adversaries, And He reserves wrath for His enemies;
The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, And will not at all acquit the wicked. The Lord has His way In the whirlwind and in the storm, And the clouds are the dust of His feet.
He rebukes the sea and makes it dry, And dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel wither, And the flower of Lebanon wilts.
The mountains quake before Him, The hills melt, And the earth heaves at His presence, Yes, the world and all who dwell in it.
Who can stand before His indignation? And who can endure the fierceness of His anger? His fury is poured out like fire, And the rocks are thrown down by Him.
The Lord is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.
But with an overflowing flood He will make an utter end of its place, And darkness will pursue His enemies.
What do you conspire against the Lord? He will make an utter end of it. Affliction will not rise up a second time.
For while tangled like thorns, And while drunken like drunkards, They shall be devoured like stubble fully dried.
From you comes forth one Who plots evil against the Lord, A wicked counselor.
Thus says the Lord: “Though they are safe, and likewise many, Yet in this manner they will be cut down When he passes through. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more;
For now I will break off his yoke from you, And burst your bonds apart.”
The Lord has given a command concerning you: “Your name shall be perpetuated no longer. Out of the house of your gods I will cut off the carved image and the molded image. I will dig your grave, For you are vile.”
Behold, on the mountains The feet of him who brings good tidings, Who proclaims peace! O Judah, keep your appointed feasts, Perform your vows. For the wicked one shall no more pass through you; He is utterly cut off.
This is the word about Nineveh, the book of the special dream of Nahum the Elkoshite.
The Lord is a jealous God and One Who punishes. The Lord punishes and is angry. The Lord punishes those who fight against Him. He is angry with those who hate Him.
The Lord is slow to anger and great in power. The Lord will be sure to punish the guilty. The way He punishes is in the strong-wind and storm. The clouds are the dust under His feet.
He speaks sharp words to the sea and makes it dry. He dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel dry up. The flowers of Lebanon dry up.
Mountains shake because of Him, and the hills melt. The earth is laid waste before Him, the world and everyone in it.
Who can stand before His anger? Who can live through the burning of His anger? His anger is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken up by Him.
The Lord is good, a safe place in times of trouble. And He knows those who come to Him to be safe.
But He will put an end to Nineveh by making a flood flow over it. And He will drive those who hate Him into darkness.
Whatever plan you make against the Lord, He will destroy it. Trouble will not come a second time.
They are like thorns that tie themselves together, like those who are drunk with strong drink. They are destroyed like dry grass.
From you one has come who makes sinful plans against the Lord, one who talks about sinful things to do.
The Lord says, “Even if they are strong and many, they will be destroyed and pass away. I have brought trouble to you, O Judah, but I will not bring you trouble any more.
Now I will break his load off your shoulders and tear off your chains.”
The Lord has said this about you: “You will have no one to carry on your name. I will destroy the false gods and objects of worship from the house of your gods. I will make your grave ready, for you are very sinful.”
See, on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news and speaks of peace! Keep your special suppers, O Judah. Keep your promises. For the sinful one will never come against you again. He is destroyed.
This message concerning Nineveh came as a vision to Nahum, who lived in Elkosh.
The Lord is a jealous God, filled with vengeance and rage. He takes revenge on all who oppose him and continues to rage against his enemies!
The Lord is slow to get angry, but his power is great, and he never lets the guilty go unpunished. He displays his power in the whirlwind and the storm. The billowing clouds are the dust beneath his feet.
At his command the oceans dry up, and the rivers disappear. The lush pastures of Bashan and Carmel fade, and the green forests of Lebanon wither.
In his presence the mountains quake, and the hills melt away; the earth trembles, and its people are destroyed.
Who can stand before his fierce anger? Who can survive his burning fury? His rage blazes forth like fire, and the mountains crumble to dust in his presence.
The Lord is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in him.
But he will sweep away his enemies in an overwhelming flood. He will pursue his foes into the darkness of night.
Why are you scheming against the Lord? He will destroy you with one blow; he won’t need to strike twice!
His enemies, tangled like thornbushes and staggering like drunks, will be burned up like dry stubble in a field.
Who is this wicked counselor of yours who plots evil against the Lord?
This is what the Lord says: “Though the Assyrians have many allies, they will be destroyed and disappear. O my people, I have punished you before, but I will not punish you again.
Now I will break the yoke of bondage from your neck and tear off the chains of Assyrian oppression.”
And this is what the Lord says concerning the Assyrians in Nineveh: “You will have no more children to carry on your name. I will destroy all the idols in the temples of your gods. I am preparing a grave for you because you are despicable!”
Look! A messenger is coming over the mountains with good news! He is bringing a message of peace. Celebrate your festivals, O people of Judah, and fulfill all your vows, for your wicked enemies will never invade your land again. They will be completely destroyed!

He rebukes the sea and makes it dry, and he dries up all the rivers; Bashan and Carmel wither, and the bloom of Lebanon fades.
The mountains quake before him, and the hills melt; the earth heaves before him, the world and all who live in it.
Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and by him the rocks are broken in pieces.
The Lord is good, a stronghold in a day of trouble; he protects those who take refuge in him,
even in a rushing flood. He will make a full end of his adversaries, and will pursue his enemies into darkness.
Why do you plot against the Lord? He will make an end; no adversary will rise up twice.
Like thorns they are entangled, like drunkards they are drunk; they are consumed like dry straw.
From you one has gone out who plots evil against the Lord, one who counsels wickedness.
Thus says the Lord, “Though they are at full strength and many, they will be cut off and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more.
And now I will break off his yoke from you and snap the bonds that bind you.”
The Lord has commanded concerning you: “Your name shall be perpetuated no longer; from the house of your gods I will cut off the carved image and the cast image. I will make your grave, for you are worthless.”
Look! On the mountains the feet of one who brings good tidings, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your festivals, O Judah, fulfill your vows, for never again shall the wicked invade you; they are utterly cut off.

The burden concerning Nineveh. The sefer chazon (book of the vision) of Nachum of Elkosh.
A jealous G-d and taking vengeance is Hashem; an avenger is Hashem, Ba’al Chemah (L-rd of Wrathful Fury); Hashem will take vengeance on His adversaries, and He reserveth wrath for His enemies.
Hashem is slow to anger, and great in ko’ach, and will not at all leave the guilty unpunished; Hashem hath His way in the whirlwind and in the tempest, and the anan (clouds) are the dust of His feet.
Hashem rebuketh the yam, and drieth it up, and maketh all the neharot (rivers) run dry; Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of the Levanon fadeth.
The mountains quake before Hashem, and the hills melt away, and ha’aretz heaveth at His presence, yea, tevel (the world), and all that dwell therein.
Who can stand before Hashem’s fury? And who can endure His charon af (burning anger, see Ro 1:18)? His chemah (wrath) is poured out like eish (fire) and the tzurim (rocks) are rent in pieces before Him.
Hashem is tov, a maoz (stronghold) in the Yom Tzarah; and Hashem knoweth them that take refuge in Him.
But with an overwhelming flood He will make an utter end of her [Nineveh’s] site, and Hashem shall pursue His enemies into choshech.
Whatever plot ye against Hashem, Hashem will make an utter end of anyone doing it; tzarah (affliction) will not arise a second time.
For while they be twisted together as sirim (thorns), and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.
There is one come out of thee [see 1:1], that imagineth evil against Hashem, a yo’etz Beliya’al (a counselor of Beliya’al [i.e., Sennacherib]).
Thus saith Hashem: Though they are strong, and likewise rabbim, yet shall they thus be cut down, and he [the Assyrian] shall pass away. Though I have afflicted thee [O Yehudah], I will afflict thee no more.
For now will I break his motah (yoke) from off thee, and will break thy fetters in pieces.
And Hashem hath given a command concerning thee, that no more of thy name be sown [i.e., to perpetuate his name]; out of the bais of thy g-ds will I cut off the pesel (graven image) and the molten image; I prepare thy kever (grave); for thou art vile.
Hinei, upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth Besorah (Good News), that publisheth Shalom! O Yehudah, keep thy chagim, fulfill thy nedarim; for the Beliya’al shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.

God is jealous. And the LORD avenges. The LORD avenges, the LORD of anger. The LORD will take vengeance on His adversaries, and He reserves wrath for His enemies.
The LORD is slow to anger, but great in power, and will not surely acquit. The LORD has His way in the whirlwind, and in the storm. And the clouds are the dust of His feet.
He rebukes the sea and dries it. And He dries up all the rivers. Bashan is withered, and Carmel. And the flower of Lebanon is wilted.
The mountains tremble for Him, and the hills melt. And the Earth is burnt at His sight, yea the world and all who dwell in it.
Who can stand before His wrath? Or who can abide in the fierceness of His wrath? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken by Him.
The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble. And He knows those who trust in Him.
But passing over as with a flood, He will utterly destroy its place. And darkness shall pursue His enemies.
What do you imagine against the LORD? He will make an utter destruction. Affliction shall not rise up a second time.
For like tangled thorns, and like drunkards in their drunkenness, they shall be devoured as fully dried stubble.
There comes one out of you who imagines evil against the LORD, a wicked counselor.
Thus says the LORD: “Though they are quiet, and also many, yet thus shall they be cut off when he shall pass. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more.
“For now I will break his yoke from you and will burst your bonds asunder.
“And the LORD has given a Commandment concerning you that no more of your name be scattered. Out of the house of your gods I will cut off the carved image and the cast image. I will make it your grave for you, for you are vile.
“Behold the feet of him who declares and publishes peace upon the mountains. O Judah, keep your solemn Feasts, perform your vows! For the wicked shall no longer pass through you. He is utterly cut off.”

The oracle concerning Nineveh—the book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
A jealous and avenging God is Adonai. Yes, Adonai is the avenger and master of wrath. Adonai is avenger to His adversaries, Yes, a keeper of wrath for His foes.
Adonai is slow to anger and great in power, but He will by no means acquit the guilty. Adonai’s way is with a whirlwind or with a storm wind, Clouds are the dust of His feet.
Rebuking the sea, He made it dry, as He has dried up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel languished, Yes, Lebanon’s budding languished.
Mountains quaked because of Him, and the hills have melted. The earth has heaved up at His presence— yes, the world and everything dwelling in it.
Before His indignation who can stand? Who can withstand His burning anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and cliffs break down before Him.
Adonai is good as a refuge in the day of distress, and He knows those who take refuge in Him.
But with an overwhelming flood, He will make that place a total ruin. Darkness will pursue His enemies.
What can you scheme against Adonai? He will make a complete destruction. Distress will not arise twice.
For even like tangled thorns they will be consumed, or like drunkards who are drunk, or like stubble that is fully dry.
Out of you has come a schemer of evil against Adonai, a counselor of Belial.
Thus said Adonai: Though they are strong and numerous, even so they will be mowed down and pass away. Although I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more.
I will now break his yoke from you, and tear apart your bonds.
Adonai has issued a command against you: no more will your name be spread. From the house of your gods I will cut off the idol and metal image. I will prepare your grave— for you have become worthless.
This records the vision which burdened a man named Nahum, who came from the town of Elkosh. The vision is a message from God pronouncing what is coming to the city of Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian Empire.
The Eternal One won’t tolerate anything that distracts from Him and will avenge and settle the score on behalf of His covenant people. The Eternal will serve up justice when His anger finally overflows. He brings justice to those who oppose Him And sustains His fury toward those who work against Him.
The Eternal’s anger builds slowly, but His power is great. He will not allow the guilty to go free. His way is in fierce winds and storms; the clouds are dust beneath His feet.
He chastises the oceans, and they all dry up; He makes the rushing rivers run dry too. The lush lands of Bashan and Carmel wither, and the beautiful flowers of Lebanon shrivel.
In response to Him, mountains quake and mudslides flow down melting hillsides. The planet and all who live on it are overwhelmed in His presence.
Who can stand up when His fury finally overflows? Who can hold up under the heat of His anger? His fury flows out like fire, strong enough to shatter even the rocks.
The Eternal One is good, a safe shelter in times of trouble. He cares for those who search for protection in Him.
But with an overwhelming flood, He will make a complete end to his enemies. He will chase His foes into oblivion.
Futile are the plots you devise against the Eternal One, Nineveh, because He will put a stop to them. Evil will not have a second chance to rise up.
They are tangled up in the thorns of their own evil ways, inebriated by their own excesses. They are consumed by their own evil, like dried grass in a fire.
It was one of your own, Nineveh, who hatched evil plots against the Eternal and encouraged others toward wickedness.
Eternal One (to His people): Although their numbers are countless and they have strong allies, they will be stopped and their time as your oppressor will pass away. Although I have brought trouble down on you, people of Judah, I will bring trouble to you no more.
Now I will break their yoke of slavery and death from your shoulders and tear their chains of religious and political oppression away from you.
The Eternal has sent this command about you, king of Nineveh. Eternal One: You will have no descendants left to carry on your name. I will destroy the things you have carved and cast with your own hands, Idols you have made to fill the temples of your gods. I will personally prepare your grave because you are totally despicable!
Look, here comes a runner across the mountains bringing good news, announcing peace! Celebrate your festivals, people of Judah, and keep the promises you made. Those wicked armies of Nineveh will never invade you again. He is utterly cut off.
A revelation about Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
Yahweh is a jealous God and avenges. Yahweh avenges and is full of wrath. Yahweh takes vengeance on his adversaries, and he maintains wrath against his enemies.
Yahweh is slow to anger, and great in power, and will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. Yahweh has his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
He rebukes the sea and makes it dry, and dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel languish. The flower of Lebanon languishes.
The mountains quake before him, and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at his presence, yes, the world, and all who dwell in it.
Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the fierceness of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken apart by him.
Yahweh is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knows those who take refuge in him.
But with an overflowing flood, he will make a full end of her place, and will pursue his enemies into darkness.
What do you plot against Yahweh? He will make a full end. Affliction won’t rise up the second time.
For entangled like thorns, and drunken as with their drink, they are consumed utterly like dry stubble.
One has gone out of you who devises evil against Yahweh, who counsels wickedness.
Yahweh says: “Though they are in full strength and likewise many, even so they will be cut down and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more.
Now I will break his yoke from off you, and will burst your bonds apart.”
Yahweh has commanded concerning you: “No more descendants will bear your name. Out of the house of your gods, I will cut off the engraved image and the molten image. I will make your grave, for you are vile.”
Behold, on the mountains the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace! Keep your feasts, Judah! Perform your vows, for the wicked one will no more pass through you. He is utterly cut off.
The burden of Nineveh; the book of (the) vision of Nahum (the) Elkoshite.
The Lord is a punisher, and the Lord is venging; the Lord is venging, and having strong vengeance; the Lord is venging against his adversaries, and he is wrathing to his enemies (and he is raging at his enemies).
The Lord is patient, and great in strength, and he cleansing shall not make (the wicked) innocent. The Lord cometh in tempest, and the ways of him be in whirlwind, and clouds be the dust of his feet; (The Lord is patient, and great in strength, and in cleansing, he shall not make the wicked innocent, or let them go unpunished. The Lord cometh in the tempest, and his ways be in the whirlwind, and the clouds be the dust of his feet;)
he blameth the sea, and drieth it, and bringeth all floods into desert (he rebuketh the sea, and it drieth up, and maketh all the rivers into deserts, or into dry riverbeds). Bashan is made sick, and (also) Carmel, and the flower(s) of Lebanon languished.
Mountains be moved together of him, and little hills be desolate. And [the] earth trembled together from the face of him, and the roundness of earth, and all dwelling therein. (The mountains be altogether moved, or shaken, before him, and the little hills be made desolate. And the earth altogether trembled, or shook, before his face, yea, the whole earth, and all those who live upon it.)
Who shall stand before the face of his indignation? and who shall against-stand in the wrath of his strong vengeance? His indignation is shed out as fire, and stones be dissolved, either broken, of him. (Who can stand before his anger? yea, who can stand against the anger of his strong vengeance? His indignation is poured out like fire, and the stones be dissolved, or broken, by him.)
The Lord is good, and strengthening in the day of tribulation, and knowing them that hope in him. (The Lord is good, and a stronghold, or a fortress, in the day of tribulation, and he knoweth those who trust in him.)
And in great flood passing forth, he shall make end of his place; and darknesses shall pursue his enemies. (And like a great river flowing forth, he shall make an end of the place of his enemies; and darkness shall pursue his enemies.)
What think ye against the Lord? He shall make end; double tribulation shall not rise together. (What do ye plan, or plot, against the Lord? He shall make an end; and tribulation shall not rise up a second time.)
For as thorns embrace themselves together, so the feast of them drinking together shall be wasted, as stubble full of dryness. (For as tangled thorns, like very dry stubble, be quickly destroyed, or burned up, so shall be the feasts of those of you drinking together.)
Of thee shall go out a man thinking malice against the Lord, and treat trespassing in soul. (Out of thee came a man plotting malice against the Lord, and treating, or pondering, trespassing in his soul.)
The Lord saith these things, If they shall be perfect, and so many, and thus they shall be clipped, and it shall pass by. I tormented thee, and I shall no more torment thee. (The Lord saith these things, Though they be perfect, and so many, still they shall be cut down, or destroyed, and they shall pass away from thee. I have tormented thee, but I shall torment thee no more.)
And now I shall all-break the rod of him from (off) thy back, and I shall break thy bonds.
And the Lord shall command on thee, it shall no more be sown of thy name. Of the house of thy god I shall slay; I shall set thy sepulchre a graven image, and an image welled together, either molten, for thou art unworshipped. (And the Lord hath commanded about thee, that thy name shall no more be sown. In the temples of thy gods I shall destroy the carved figures and the figures welded together, or cast. And I shall build thy sepulchre, or thy tomb, for thou art dishonourable.)
Lo! on hills the feet of the (one) evangelizing and telling peace. Judah, hallow thou thy feast days, and yield thy vows, for why Belial shall no more put to, that he pass forth in thee; all he is perished. (Lo! upon the hills the feet of the messenger bringing good news and telling peace. Judah, consecrate thou thy feast days, and pay thy vows, for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; they have altogether perished.)
Burden of Nineveh. The Book of the Vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
A God zealous and avenging [is] Jehovah, An avenger [is] Jehovah, and possessing fury. An avenger [is] Jehovah on His adversaries, And He is watching for His enemies.
Jehovah [is] slow to anger, and great in power, And Jehovah doth not entirely acquit, In a hurricane and in a tempest [is] His way, And a cloud [is] the dust of His feet.
He is pushing against a sea, and drieth it up, Yea, all the floods He hath made dry, Languishing [are] Bashan and Carmel, Yea, the flower of Lebanon [is] languishing.
Mountains have shaken because of Him, And the hills have been melted; And lifted up [is] the earth at His presence, And the world and all dwelling in it.
Before His indignation who doth stand? And who riseth up in the heat of His anger? His fury hath been poured out like fire, And the rocks have been broken by Him.
Good [is] Jehovah for a strong place in a day of distress. And He knoweth those trusting in Him.
And with a flood passing over, An end He maketh of its place, And His enemies doth darkness pursue.
What do we devise against Jehovah? An end He is making, arise not twice doth distress.
For while princes [are] perplexed, And with their drink are drunken, They have been consumed as stubble fully dried.
From thee hath come forth a deviser of evil Against Jehovah -- a worthless counsellor.
Thus said Jehovah: Though complete, and thus many, Yet thus they have been cut off, And he hath passed away. And I afflicted thee, I afflict thee no more.
And now I break his rod from off thee, And thy bands I do draw away.
And commanded concerning thee hath Jehovah, `No more of thy name doth spread abroad, From the house of thy gods I cut off graven and molten image, I appoint thy grave, for thou hast been vile.
Lo, on the mountains the feet of one proclaiming tidings, sounding peace! Celebrate, O Judah, thy festivals, complete thy vows, For add no more to pass over into thee doth the worthless, He hath been completely cut off!
