Be happy, people of Edom. Be happy, you who live in the land of Uz. But remember, the cup of the Lord’s anger will come around to you too. When you drink from that cup, you will get drunk and strip off all your clothes.
Be happy and ·glad [rejoice], ·people [L daughter] of Edom, you who live in the land of Uz [C city in Edom; Job 1:1; Jer. 25:20]. The cup [C of God’s judgment] will ·come [pass] to you; then you will get drunk and go naked [Jer. 25:15–38; 49:12–13].
Celebrate while you can, O Edom! Live it up in Uz! For it won’t be long before you drink this cup, too. You’ll find out what it’s like to drink God’s wrath, Get drunk on God’s wrath and wake up with nothing, stripped naked.
Utter your words of joy: Edom, inhabitants of the land of Uz, go ahead—be happy. In time the cup of suffering will be yours too, and you’ll drink so deeply, so perilously as to be intoxicated and stripped naked.
Thou daughter of Edom, make joy, and be glad, that dwellest in the land of Uz; the cup shall come also to thee, thou shalt be made drunken, and shalt be made bare. (O daughter of Edom, rejoice, and be happy, thou who livest in the land of Uz; the cup shall also come to thee, and thou shalt be made drunk, and shalt be made naked.)
