His sons come to honor, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

We never live to know if our children are praised or disgraced.

Whether his children come to honour or dishonour, he shall not understand.
If their sons are honored, they will never know it. If their sons do wrong, they will never see it.
If his sons become famous, he does not know about it. If they become ashamed, he does not know that either.

Always you are against him, and then he passes off the scene. You make him old and wrinkled, then send him away. He never knows it if his sons are honored; or they may fail and face disaster, but he knows it not.
“Meanwhile, mountains wear down and boulders break up, Stones wear smooth and soil erodes, as you relentlessly grind down our hope. You’re too much for us. As always, you get the last word. We don’t like it and our faces show it, but you send us off anyway. If our children do well for themselves, we never know it; if they do badly, we’re spared the hurt. Body and soul, that’s it for us— a lifetime of pain, a lifetime of sorrow.”
