[Say to the ruler] “Give us advice, make a decision [for Moab, king of Judah]; Cast your shadow [over us] like night in the midst of noon; Hide the outcasts, do not betray the fugitive [to his pursuer].
They say: “·Help us [or Make a decision]. ·Tell us what to do [or Grant us justice]. Protect us from our enemies as ·shade [L shade like night] protects us from the noon sun. ·Hide us, because we are running for safety [L Shelter the fugitives/outcasts]! Don’t ·give us to our enemies [betray/uncover the refugee].
They say to the people of Judah, “Tell us what to do. Protect us like a tree that casts a cool shadow in the heat of noon, and let us rest in your shade. We are refugees; hide us where no one can find us.
“Dispatch a gift of lambs,” says Moab, “to the leaders in Jerusalem— Lambs from Sela sent across the desert to buy the goodwill of Jerusalem. The towns and people of Moab are at a loss, New-hatched birds knocked from the nest, fluttering helplessly At the banks of the Arnon River, unable to cross: ‘Tell us what to do, help us out! Protect us, hide us! Give the refugees from Moab sanctuary with you. Be a safe place for those on the run from the killing fields.’”
The Moabites say to the rulers of Judah, “Make up your mind. Make a decision. Cover us with your shadow. Make it like night even at noon. Hide those of us who are running away. Don’t turn them over to their enemies.
(to Jerusalem) Give us your best advice and do what is right. When the day is at its fiercest, hide us in your cool shade. Shield the trammeled and abused. Keep your mouth shut when our enemy comes looking, seeking us out.
Take thou counsel, constrain thou counsel; set thou as night thy shadow in midday, hide thou them that flee, and betray thou not men of unsteadfast dwelling. (Take thou counsel, or advice, and constrain thou counsel; make thou thy shadow like the night at midday, hide thou them who flee away, and betray thou not those of unsteadfast dwelling.)
