“Take counsel, execute judgment; make thy shadow as the night in the midst of the noonday; hide the outcasts, betray not him that wandereth.

[Say to the ruler] “Give us advice, make a decision [for Moab, king of Judah]; Cast your shadow [over us] like night in the midst of noon; Hide the outcasts, do not betray the fugitive [to his pursuer].

Give us counsel and make a decision. Shelter us at noonday with shade that is as dark as night. Hide the refugees; do not betray the one who flees.
Consider carefully, act justly; at high noon provide your shade like night. Hide the outcasts; keep the fugitives hidden.

Moab's messengers say to the people of Judah, “Be kind and help us! Shade us from the heat of the noonday sun. Hide our refugees! Don't turn them away.
Bring in counsel, execute justice; make thy shadow as the night in the midst of noonday; hide the outcasts, discover not the fugitive.
Take counsel, gather a council: make thy shadow as the night in the midday: hide them that flee, and betray not them that wander about.
They say, “Help us! Tell us what to do. Protect us from our enemies as shade protects us from the noon sun. We are running from our enemies. Hide us! Don’t give us to our enemies.
The Moabites say, ‘Tell us what we should do! Help us in our troubles! Give us some shade in the middle of the day! Hide the people who are escaping! Our enemies are chasing us. Do not let them find us.
Get advice and make a decision. At high noon make your shade as dark as night. Hide the refugees. Do not betray the fugitive.

They say to the people of Judah, “Tell us what to do. Protect us like a tree that casts a cool shadow in the heat of noon, and let us rest in your shade. We are refugees; hide us where no one can find us.

The ambassadors, who accompany the gift to Jerusalem plead for advice and help. “Give us sanctuary. Protect us. Do not turn us over to our foes.
“Dispatch a gift of lambs,” says Moab, “to the leaders in Jerusalem— Lambs from Sela sent across the desert to buy the goodwill of Jerusalem. The towns and people of Moab are at a loss, New-hatched birds knocked from the nest, fluttering helplessly At the banks of the Arnon River, unable to cross: ‘Tell us what to do, help us out! Protect us, hide us! Give the refugees from Moab sanctuary with you. Be a safe place for those on the run from the killing fields.’” “When this is all over,” Judah answers, “the tyrant toppled, The killing at an end, all signs of these cruelties long gone, A new government of love will be established in the venerable David tradition. A Ruler you can depend upon will head this government, A Ruler passionate for justice, a Ruler quick to set things right.” * * *

The Moabites say to the rulers of Judah, “Make up your mind. Make a decision. Cover us with your shadow. Make it like night even at noon. Hide those of us who are running away. Don’t turn them over to their enemies.
“Make up your mind,” Moab says. “Render a decision. Make your shadow like night— at high noon. Hide the fugitives, do not betray the refugees.

(to Jerusalem) Give us your best advice and do what is right. When the day is at its fiercest, hide us in your cool shade. Shield the trammeled and abused. Keep your mouth shut when our enemy comes looking, seeking us out.
Give counsel! Execute justice! Make your shade like the night in the middle of the noonday! Hide the outcasts! Don’t betray the fugitive!
