By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided into their lands, every one after his own tongue, according to their families, into their nations.

Japheth’s descendants had their own languages, tribes, and land. They were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. Gomer was the ancestor of Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. Javan was the ancestor of Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim, who settled along the coast.
From these came the distribution of the isles of the nations, according to their lands, every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.
By these were divided the islands of the Gentiles in their lands, every one according to his tongue and their families in their nations.
All the people who lived in the area around the Mediterranean Sea came from these sons of Japheth. The people separated and went to different countries according to languages, families, and nations.
From these the coastland peoples spread in their lands, each with his own language, by their clans, in their nations.
