Ecclesiastes 2:1
Print
I said in mine heart, “Go now, I will test thee with mirth; therefore enjoy pleasure.” And behold, this also is vanity.
I said in my heart, Come now, I will prove thee with mirth; therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also was vanity.
I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure and gratification; so enjoy yourself and have a good time.” But behold, this too was vanity (futility, meaninglessness).
I said in my mind, Come now, I will prove you with mirth and test you with pleasure; so have a good time [enjoy pleasure]. But this also was vanity (emptiness, falsity, and futility)!
I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.
I said to myself, “Go ahead, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy what is good.” But it turned out to be futile.
I said to myself, Come, I will make you experience pleasure; enjoy what is good! But this too was pointless!
I said to myself, “Come now, I will test myself with pleasure and enjoying good things”; but this too was pointless.
I said to myself, “Have fun and enjoy yourself!” But this didn't make sense.
I said in my heart, Come now, I will try thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure. But behold, this also is vanity.
I said in my heart: I will go, and abound with delights, and enjoy good things. And I saw that this also was vanity.
I said to myself, “I should have fun—I should enjoy everything as much as I can.” But I learned that this is also useless.
I said to myself, ‘I will enjoy the good things of life. I will see if that helps me to be happy.’ But I realized that this too had no purpose.
I thought in my heart, “Go ahead, test yourself with pleasure to see what is good.” But, oh, that too is vapor.
I said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself.” But behold, this also was vanity.
I said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself.” But behold, this also was vanity.
I said ·to myself [L in my heart], “·I will try having fun [L Come now, I will test you with pleasure]. I will ·enjoy myself [experience the good life; L see good].” ·But I found that [L Behold] this is also useless [1:2].
Pleasures, sumptuous buildings, riches and possessions are but vanity. 14 The wise and the fool have both one end touching the bodily death. I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with joy: therefore take thou pleasure in pleasant things: and behold, this also is vanity.
I thought to myself, “Now I want to experiment with pleasure and enjoy myself.” But even this was pointless.
I decided to enjoy myself and find out what happiness is. But I found that this is useless, too.
I said to myself, “Go ahead, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy what is good.” But it turned out to be futile.
I said to myself, “I will try having fun. I will enjoy myself.” But I found that this is also useless.
I told myself, “I will test you with pleasure, so enjoy yourself.” But this was pointless.
¶ I said in my heart, Come now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy good things; and, behold, this also is vanity.
I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.
I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.
I said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with gladness, so that you shall see good things.” And behold, it too was vanity.
I said to myself, “Come! I will test pleasure to see whether it is worthwhile.” But look, “This also is vanity!”
I said to myself, “Come now, be merry; enjoy yourself to the full.” But I found that this, too, was futile. For it is silly to be laughing all the time; what good does it do?
I said to myself, “Let’s go for it—experiment with pleasure, have a good time!” But there was nothing to it, nothing but smoke. What do I think of the fun-filled life? Insane! Inane! My verdict on the pursuit of happiness? Who needs it? With the help of a bottle of wine and all the wisdom I could muster, I tried my level best to penetrate the absurdity of life. I wanted to get a handle on anything useful we mortals might do during the years we spend on this earth.
And I said in my heart, “Come, and I will test you with selfish pleasures to experience desires.” And notice that this too is vanity.
I thought to myself, “Now I want to experiment with pleasure and enjoy myself.” But even this was pointless.
I said in my heart, “Come, now, let me try you with pleasure and the enjoyment of good things.” See, this too was vanity.
I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure. So enjoy yourself.” And behold, it too was futility.
I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure. So enjoy yourself.” And behold, it too was futility.
Then I said to myself, “All right, I will pursue pleasure and the enjoyment of good things.” However, this also proved to be vanity.
I said to myself, “I will try having fun. I will enjoy myself.” But I found that this is also useless.
I thought to myself, “Come now, I will try self-indulgent pleasure to see if it is worthwhile.” But I found that it also is futile.
I said to myself, “Come on. I’ll try out pleasure. I want to find out if it is good.” But it also proved to be meaningless.
I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good.” But that also proved to be meaningless.
I said to myself, ‘Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good.’ But that also proved to be meaningless.
I said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with mirth; therefore enjoy pleasure”; but surely, this also was vanity.
I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with things that are fun. So have a good time.” But see, this also was for nothing.
I said to myself, “Come on, let’s try pleasure. Let’s look for the ‘good things’ in life.” But I found that this, too, was meaningless.
I said to myself, ‘Come now, I will make a test of pleasure; enjoy yourself.’ But again, this also was vanity.
I said to myself, ‘Come now, I will make a test of pleasure; enjoy yourself.’ But again, this also was vanity.
I said to myself, “Come now, I will make a test of pleasure; enjoy yourself.” But again, this also was vanity.
I said to myself, “Come now, I will make a test of pleasure; enjoy yourself.” But again, this also was vanity.
I said in mine lev, Come now, I will test thee with simchah, therefore enjoy tov; and, hinei, this also is hevel.
I said to myself, “Come now, I will make a test of pleasure; enjoy yourself.” But behold, this also was vanity.
I said to myself, “Come now, I will make a test of pleasure; enjoy yourself.” But behold, this also was vanity.
I said within myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure to see what is good.” Yet behold, this too was meaningless.
Teacher: I said to myself, “Let me dabble and test you in pleasure and see if there is any good in that.” But look, that, too, was fleeting.
I said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with mirth: therefore enjoy pleasure;” and behold, this also was vanity.
Therefore I said in mine heart, I shall go, and I shall flow in delights, and I shall use goods; and I saw also that this was vanity. (And so I said in my heart, I shall go, and I shall enjoy all delights, and I shall enjoy all good things; and I saw that this was also empty and futile.)
I said in my heart, `Pray, come, I try thee with mirth, and look thou on gladness;' and lo, even it [is] vanity.
