And it came to pass afterward that David’s heart smote him because he had cut off Saul’s skirt.

Afterwards, David was sorry that he had even done that,
And it came to pass afterwards that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.
And the servants of David said to him: Behold the day, of which the Lord said to thee: I will deliver thy enemy unto thee, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good in thy eyes. Then David arose, and secretly cut off the hem of Saul's robe.
Later, David felt bad about what he did.
And afterward David's heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul's robe.

Immediately, he felt guilty. He said to his men, “God forbid that I should have done this to my master, God’s anointed, that I should so much as raise a finger against him. He’s God’s anointed!” David held his men in check with these words and wouldn’t let them pounce on Saul. Saul got up, left the cave, and went on down the road.
Afterward David’s heart troubled him because he had cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.
But afterward, David’s conscience bothered him because he had cut off the border of Saul’s robe.
David’s servants said to him, “This is the day about which the Lord said to you: I will deliver your enemy into your hand; do with him as you see fit.” So David moved up and stealthily cut off an end of Saul’s robe.
It came about afterward that David’s conscience bothered him because he had cut off the edge of Saul’s robe.
Later David felt guilty because he had cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.
Afterward David’s conscience bothered him because he had cut off an edge of Saul’s robe.
Later, David felt sorry that he had cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.
Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe.

After these things, David smote his heart, that is, his conscience reproved him, for he had cut away the hem of the mantle of Saul. (But after doing this, David’s heart struck him, that is, his conscience reproved him, for he had cut away the hem of Saul’s mantle.)
And it cometh to pass afterwards that the heart of David smiteth him, because that he hath cut off the skirt which [is] on Saul,
