And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

And David took to heart these words, and was much afraid of Achish the king of Gath.
But David laid up these words in his heart, and was exceedingly afraid at the face of Achis the king of Geth.

When David realized that he had been recognized, he panicked, fearing the worst from Achish, king of Gath. So right there, while they were looking at him, he pretended to go crazy, pounding his head on the city gate and foaming at the mouth, spit dripping from his beard. Achish took one look at him and said to his servants, “Can’t you see he’s crazy? Why did you let him in here? Don’t you think I have enough crazy people to put up with as it is without adding another? Get him out of here!”
And David took these words to heart and greatly feared Achish the king of Gath.
When David realized what they had said, he was terrified of King Achish of Gath.

When David heard that these were the kinds of things people were saying about him, he was afraid of what Achish, the king of Gath, might do,
David laid up these words in his heart, and was very afraid of Achish the king of Gath.
And David took these words in his heart, and he dreaded greatly of the face of Achish, king of Gath. (And David took these words to heart, and so he greatly feared King Achish of Gath.)
