Psalm 58

There Is a God Who Judges on Earth

For the choir director. [a]Al-tashheth. Of David. A [b]Mikhtam.

58 Do you indeed [c]speak righteousness, O [d]gods?
Do you (A)judge [e]with equity, O sons of men?
No, in heart you (B)work unrighteousness;
On earth you [f](C)prepare a path for the violence of your hands.
The wicked are estranged (D)from the womb;
These who speak falsehood (E)wander in error from [g]birth.
They have venom like the (F)venom of a serpent;
Like a deaf cobra that stops up its ear,
So that it (G)does not hear the voice of [h](H)charmers,
Or a skillful caster of spells.

O God, (I)shatter their teeth in their mouth;
Break out the fangs of the young lions, O Yahweh.
Let them (J)flow away like water that runs off;
When he [i](K)aims his arrows, let them be as [j]headless shafts.
Let them be as a snail which [k]melts away as it goes along,
Like the (L)miscarriages of a woman which never behold the sun.
Before your (M)pots can feel the fire of thorns
He will (N)sweep them away with a whirlwind, the living and the burning alike.

10 The (O)righteous will be glad when he (P)beholds the vengeance;
He will (Q)wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 And men will say, “Surely there is a [l](R)reward for the righteous;
Surely there is a God who (S)judges [m]on earth!”

Jeremiah 3:1-14

The Polluted Land

God [a]says, “(A)If a husband divorces his wife
And she goes from him
And belongs to another man,
Will he still return to her?
Will not that land be completely [b]polluted?
But you (B)are a harlot with many [c]lovers;
Yet you (C)turn to Me,” declares Yahweh.
“Lift up your eyes to the (D)bare heights and see;
Where have you not been ravished?
By the roads you have (E)sat for them
Like [d]an Arab in the wilderness,
And you have (F)polluted a land
With your harlotry and with your evil.
Therefore the (G)showers have been withheld,
And the [e]late rain has not [f]come.
Yet you had a (H)harlot’s forehead;
You refused to feel dishonor.
Have you not just now called to Me,
(I)My Father, You are the [g](J)close companion of my (K)youth?
(L)Will He be angry forever?
Will He keep it to the end?’
Behold, you have spoken
And have done evil things,
And you have [h]had your way.”

Faithless Israel Called to Repentance

Then Yahweh said to me in the days of Josiah the king, “Have you seen what faithless Israel did? She (M)went up on every high hill and under every green tree, and she was a harlot there. (N)I said, ‘After she has done all these things, she will return to Me’; but she did not return, and her (O)treacherous sister Judah saw it. And I saw that for all the adulteries of faithless Israel, I had sent her away and (P)given her a certificate of divorce, yet her (Q)treacherous sister Judah did not fear; but she went and was a harlot also. So it was, because of the lightness of her harlotry, that she (R)polluted the land and committed adultery with (S)stones and trees. 10 Yet in spite of all this, her treacherous sister Judah did not return to Me with all her heart, but rather in (T)lying,” declares Yahweh.

11 And Yahweh said to me, “(U)Faithless Israel has proved herself more righteous than treacherous Judah. 12 Go and call out these words toward the north and say,

[i](V)Return, faithless Israel,’ declares Yahweh;
(W)I will not [j]look upon you in anger.
For I am (X)One of lovingkindness,’ declares Yahweh;
‘I will not be angry forever.
13 Only [k](Y)acknowledge your iniquity,
That you have transgressed against Yahweh your God
And have (Z)scattered your ways of harlotry to the strangers (AA)under every green tree,
And you have not listened to My voice,’ declares Yahweh.
14 [l]Return, O faithless sons,’ declares Yahweh;
‘For I am a (AB)master to you,
And I will take you one from a city and two from a family,
And (AC)I will bring you to Zion.’

Titus 1:1-9

Greetings and Grace

Paul, (A)a slave of God and an (B)apostle of Jesus Christ, [a]for the faith of God’s (C)elect and (D)the full knowledge of the truth which is (E)according to godliness, in (F)the hope of eternal life, which the God (G)who cannot lie (H)promised [b](I)from all eternity, but (J)at the proper time manifested His word in (K)preaching, (L)with which I was entrusted (M)according to the commandment of (N)God our Savior,

To (O)Titus, (P)my genuine child according to our (Q)common faith: (R)Grace and peace from God the Father and (S)Christ Jesus our Savior.

Qualifications of Elders

For this reason I left you in (T)Crete, that you would set in order what remains and (U)appoint (V)elders in every city as I directed you, namely, (W)if any man is beyond reproach, the (X)husband of one wife, having faithful children, who are not accused of (Y)dissipation, or (Z)rebellious. For the [c](AA)overseer must be beyond reproach as (AB)God’s steward, not (AC)self-willed, not quick-tempered, not (AD)addicted to wine, not pugnacious, (AE)not fond of dishonest gain, but (AF)hospitable, (AG)loving what is good, sensible, righteous, holy, self-controlled, (AH)holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in (AI)sound doctrine and to reprove those who contradict.
