Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
10 (A)I am Yahweh your God,
Who brought you up from the land of Egypt;
(B)Open your mouth wide and I will (C)fill it.
11 “But My people (D)did not listen to My voice,
And Israel was not willing to obey Me.
12 So I (E)released [a]them over to the stubbornness of their heart,
That they would walk in their own devices.
13 Oh that My people (F)would listen to Me,
That Israel would (G)walk in My ways!
14 I would quickly (H)subdue their enemies
And I would (I)turn My hand against their adversaries.
15 (J)Those who hate Yahweh would (K)cower before Him,
And their time of punishment would be forever.
16 [b]But I would feed you with the [c](L)finest of the wheat,
And with (M)honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”
Judah Transgresses Against Yahweh
2 Now the word of Yahweh came to me saying, 2 “Go and (A)call out in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh,
14 “Is Israel (A)a slave? Or is he a homeborn slave?
Why has he become plunder?
15 The young (B)lions have roared at him;
They have given forth their voice.
And they have (C)made his land a desolation;
His cities have been turned into ruin, without inhabitant.
16 Also the [a]men of (D)Memphis and Tahpanhes
Have [b]shaved the (E)top of your head.
17 Have you not (F)done this to yourself
By your forsaking Yahweh your God
When He (G)led you in the way?
18 But now what are you doing (H)on the road to Egypt,
To drink the waters of the [c](I)Nile?
Or what are you doing on the road to Assyria,
To drink the waters of the [d]River?
19 (J)Your own evil will chastise you,
And your (K)acts of faithlessness will reprove you;
Know therefore and see that it is evil and (L)bitter
For you to forsake Yahweh your God,
And (M)the dread of Me is not in you,” declares Lord Yahweh of hosts.
20 “For long ago [e](N)I broke your yoke
And tore off your bonds;
But you said, ‘I will not serve!’
For on every (O)high hill
And under every green tree
You have lain down as a harlot.
21 Yet I (P)planted you a choice vine,
A completely true seed.
How then have you turned yourself before Me
Into the (Q)degenerate shoots of a foreign vine?
22 Although you (R)wash yourself with lye
And [f]use much soap,
The (S)stain of your iniquity is before Me,” declares Lord Yahweh.
A Request for Status
20 (A)Then the mother of (B)the sons of Zebedee came to Him with her sons, (C)bowing down and making a request of Him. 21 And He said to her, “What do you wish?” She *said to Him, “Command that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine (D)may sit one on Your right and one on Your left.” 22 But Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (E)to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They *said to Him, “We are able.” 23 He *said to them, “(F)My cup you shall drink; but to sit on My right and on My left, this is not Mine to give, (G)but it is for those for whom it has been (H)prepared by My Father.”
24 And hearing this, the ten became indignant with the two brothers. 25 (I)But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. 26 It is not this way among you, (J)but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, 27 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; 28 just as (K)the Son of Man (L)did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His [a]life a ransom for many.”
