Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Yahweh Is in His Holy Temple
For the choir director. Of David.
11 In Yahweh I (A)take refuge;
How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your (B)mountain;
2 For, behold, the wicked (C)bend the bow,
They [a](D)make ready their arrow upon the string
To (E)shoot in darkness at the upright in heart.
3 If the (F)foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?”
4 Yahweh is in His (G)holy temple; [b]Yahweh’s (H)throne is in heaven;
His (I)eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.
5 Yahweh (J)tests the righteous,
But (K)the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates.
6 May He (L)rain [c]snares upon the wicked;
(M)Fire and brimstone and (N)burning wind will be the portion of (O)their cup.
7 For Yahweh is (P)righteous, (Q)He loves [d]righteousness;
The upright will (R)behold His face.
Yahweh Will Empty the Earth
24 Behold, Yahweh (A)empties the earth to destruction, eviscerates it, distorts its surface, and scatters its inhabitants. 2 And the people will be like the priest, the male slave like his master, the female slave like her mistress, the buyer like the seller, the lender like the borrower, the (B)creditor like the debtor. 3 The earth will be completely emptied to destruction and completely plundered, for Yahweh has spoken this word. 4 The (C)earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and withers; the (D)exalted of the people of the earth languish. 5 The earth is also (E)polluted [a]by its inhabitants, for they trespassed laws, violated statutes, (F)broke the everlasting covenant. 6 Therefore, a (G)curse devours the earth, and those who inhabit it are held guilty. Therefore, the (H)inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men remain.
7 The (I)new wine mourns;
The vine languishes;
All the glad of heart sigh.
8 The (J)joy of tambourines ceases;
The rumbling of those exulting stops;
The joy of the harp ceases.
9 They do not drink wine with song;
(K)Strong drink is (L)bitter to those who drink it.
10 The (M)city of chaos is broken down;
(N)Every house is shut up so that none may enter.
11 There is an (O)outcry in the streets concerning the wine;
(P)All gladness [b]turns to gloom.
The joy of the earth is taken away into exile.
12 Desolation remains in the city,
And the (Q)gate is struck down to ruins.
13 For (R)thus it will be in the midst of the earth among the peoples,
As the [c]shaking of an olive tree,
As the gleanings when the grape harvest is over.
17 By faith (A)Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had (B)received the promises was offering up his only son, 18 to whom it was said, “(C)In Isaac your seed shall be called.” 19 [a]He considered that (D)God is able to raise people even from the dead, from which, [b](E)figuratively speaking, he also received him back. 20 By faith (F)Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, even regarding things to come. 21 By faith (G)Jacob, as he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and (H)worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff. 22 By faith (I)Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the exodus of the sons of Israel, and gave commands concerning his bones.
23 By faith (J)Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child, and they were not afraid of the (K)king’s edict. 24 By faith Moses, (L)when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to (M)be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, 26 (N)regarding the reproach of [c]Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the (O)reward. 27 By faith he (P)left Egypt, not (Q)fearing the rage of the king; for he endured, as (R)seeing Him who is unseen. 28 By faith he [d](S)kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, so that (T)he who destroyed the firstborn would not touch them.
