Psalm 29

The Voice of Yahweh

A Psalm of David.

29 (A)Ascribe to Yahweh, O [a]sons of the mighty,
Ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength.
Ascribe to Yahweh the glory of His name;
Worship Yahweh (B)in the splendor of holiness.

The (C)voice of Yahweh is upon the waters;
The God of glory (D)thunders,
Yahweh is over [b](E)many waters.
The voice of Yahweh is (F)powerful,
The voice of Yahweh is full of splendor.
The voice of Yahweh breaks the cedars;
Indeed, Yahweh breaks in pieces (G)the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon (H)skip like a calf,
And (I)Sirion like a young wild ox.
The voice of Yahweh hews out [c]flames of fire.
The voice of Yahweh causes the wilderness to tremble;
Yahweh causes the wilderness of (J)Kadesh to tremble.
The voice of Yahweh makes (K)the deer to calve
And strips the forests bare;
And (L)in His temple everything says, “Glory!”

10 Yahweh sat enthroned over the (M)flood;
Indeed, Yahweh sits as (N)King forever.
11 [d]Yahweh will give (O)strength to His people;
[e]Yahweh will bless His people with (P)peace.

Ecclesiastes 2:1-11

The Vanity of Pleasure and Possessions

I said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with (A)gladness, so that you shall see good things.” And behold, it too was vanity. (B)I said of laughter, “It is madness,” and of gladness, “What does it do?” I explored with my heart how to [a](C)stimulate my [b]body with wine—while my heart was guiding me wisely—and how to seize (D)simpleminded folly, until I could see (E)where is this good for the sons of men in what they do under heaven the few days of their lives. I made my works great: I (F)built houses for myself; I planted (G)vineyards for myself; I made for myself (H)gardens and (I)parks, and I planted in them all kinds of fruit trees; I made for myself (J)pools of water from which to water a forest of growing trees. I bought male and female slaves, and I had [c](K)homeborn slaves. Also I possessed flocks and (L)herds larger than all who preceded me in Jerusalem. Also, I collected for myself silver and (M)gold and the treasure of kings and provinces. I provided for myself (N)male and female singers and the pleasures of the sons of men—many concubines.

Then I became (O)great and increased more than all who preceded me in Jerusalem. My wisdom also stood by me. 10 (P)All that my eyes asked for I did not refuse them. I did not withhold my heart from any gladness, for my heart was glad because of all my labor, and this was my (Q)reward for all my labor. 11 Thus I turned to all my works which my hands had done and the labor which I had labored to do, and behold, all was [d](R)vanity and striving after wind, and there was (S)no advantage under the sun.

1 Corinthians 2:1-10

Paul’s Reliance upon the Spirit

And when I came to you, brothers, I (A)did not come with superiority of word or of wisdom, proclaiming to you (B)the [a]witness of God. For I determined to know nothing among you except (C)Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. And I was with you in (D)weakness and in (E)fear and in much trembling, and my word and my preaching were (F)not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of (G)the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not be in the wisdom of men, but in (H)the power of God.

Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are (I)mature, a wisdom, however, not of (J)this age nor of the rulers of (K)this age, who are (L)being abolished. But we speak God’s wisdom in a (M)mystery, the wisdom which has been hidden, which God (N)predestined before the (O)ages to our glory, (P)which none of the rulers of (Q)this age has understood; for if they had understood it, they would not have crucified (R)the Lord of glory. But just as it is written,

(S)Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the heart of man,
All that God has prepared for those who love Him.”

10 [b](T)But to us God revealed them (U)through the Spirit, for the Spirit searches all things, even the (V)depths of God.
