Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 111[a]
111 Praise the Lord!
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
in the assembly of the godly and the congregation.
2 The Lord’s deeds are great,
eagerly awaited[b] by all who desire them.
3 His work is majestic and glorious,[c]
and his faithfulness endures[d] forever.
4 He does[e] amazing things that will be remembered;[f]
the Lord is merciful and compassionate.
5 He gives[g] food to his faithful followers;[h]
he always remembers his covenant.[i]
6 He announced that he would do mighty deeds for his people,
giving them a land that belonged to other nations.[j]
7 His acts are characterized by[k] faithfulness and justice;
all his precepts are reliable.[l]
8 They are forever firm,
and should be faithfully and properly carried out.[m]
9 He delivered his people;[n]
he ordained that his covenant be observed forever.[o]
His name is holy and awesome.
10 To obey the Lord is the fundamental principle for wise living;[p]
all who carry out his precepts acquire good moral insight.[q]
He will receive praise forever.[r]
David’s Final Words to Solomon
2 When David was close to death,[a] he told[b] Solomon his son: 2 “I am about to die.[c] Be strong and become a man! 3 Do the job the Lord your God has assigned you[d] by following his instructions[e] and obeying[f] his rules, commandments, regulations, and laws as written in the law of Moses. Then you will succeed in all you do and seek to accomplish,[g] 4 and the Lord will fulfill his promise to me,[h] ‘If your descendants watch their step[i] and live faithfully in my presence[j] with all their heart and being,[k] then,’ he promised,[l] ‘you will not fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’[m]
5 “You know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me—how he murdered two commanders of the Israelite armies, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether.[n] During peacetime he struck them down as if in battle;[o] when he shed their blood, he stained the belt on his waist and the sandals on his feet.[p] 6 Do to him what you think is appropriate,[q] but don’t let him live long and die a peaceful death.[r]
7 “Treat fairly[s] the sons of Barzillai of Gilead and provide for their needs,[t] because they helped me[u] when I had to flee from your brother Absalom.
8 “Note well, you still have to contend with Shimei son of Gera, the Benjaminite from Bahurim,[v] who tried to call down upon me a horrible judgment when I went to Mahanaim.[w] He came down and met me at the Jordan, and I solemnly promised[x] him by the Lord, ‘I will not strike you down[y] with the sword.’ 9 But now[z] don’t treat him as if he were innocent. You are a wise man and you know how to handle him;[aa] make sure he has a bloody death.”[ab]
10 Then David passed away[ac] and was buried in the City of David.[ad] 11 David reigned over Israel forty years; he reigned in Hebron seven years, and in Jerusalem thirty-three years.
7 A Samaritan woman[a] came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me some water[b] to drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone off into the town to buy supplies.[c])[d] 9 So the Samaritan woman said to him, “How can you—a Jew[e]—ask me, a Samaritan woman, for water[f] to drink?” (For Jews use nothing in common[g] with Samaritans.)[h]
10 Jesus answered[i] her, “If you had known[j] the gift of God and who it is who said to you, ‘Give me some water[k] to drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”[l] 11 “Sir,”[m] the woman[n] said to him, “you have no bucket and the well[o] is deep; where then do you get this[p] living water?[q] 12 Surely you’re not greater than our ancestor[r] Jacob, are you? For he gave us this well and drank from it himself, along with his sons and his livestock.”[s]
13 Jesus replied,[t] “Everyone who drinks some of this water will be thirsty[u] again. 14 But whoever drinks some of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again,[v] but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain[w] of water springing up[x] to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw[y] water.”[z] 16 He[aa] said to her, “Go call your husband and come back here.”[ab] 17 The woman replied,[ac] “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “Right you are when you said,[ad] ‘I have no husband,’[ae] 18 for you have had five husbands, and the man you are living with[af] now is not your husband. This you said truthfully!”
19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I see[ag] that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain,[ah] and you people[ai] say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Believe me, woman,[aj] a time[ak] is coming when you will worship[al] the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You people[am] worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews.[an] 23 But a time[ao] is coming—and now is here[ap]—when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks[aq] such people to be[ar] his worshipers.[as] 24 God is spirit,[at] and the people who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (the one called Christ);[au] “whenever he[av] comes, he will tell[aw] us everything.”[ax] 26 Jesus said to her, “I, the one speaking to you, am he.”
