Psalm 111[a]
111 Praise the Lord!
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
in the assembly of the godly and the congregation.
2 The Lord’s deeds are great,
eagerly awaited[b] by all who desire them.
3 His work is majestic and glorious,[c]
and his faithfulness endures[d] forever.
4 He does[e] amazing things that will be remembered;[f]
the Lord is merciful and compassionate.
5 He gives[g] food to his faithful followers;[h]
he always remembers his covenant.[i]
6 He announced that he would do mighty deeds for his people,
giving them a land that belonged to other nations.[j]
7 His acts are characterized by[k] faithfulness and justice;
all his precepts are reliable.[l]
8 They are forever firm,
and should be faithfully and properly carried out.[m]
9 He delivered his people;[n]
he ordained that his covenant be observed forever.[o]
His name is holy and awesome.
10 To obey the Lord is the fundamental principle for wise living;[p]
all who carry out his precepts acquire good moral insight.[q]
He will receive praise forever.[r]
David Picks Solomon as His Successor
28 King David responded,[a] “Summon Bathsheba!”[b] She came and stood before the king.[c] 29 The king swore an oath: “As certainly as the Lord lives (he who has rescued me[d] from every danger), 30 I will keep[e] today the oath I swore to you by the Lord God of Israel: ‘Surely Solomon your son will be king after me; he will sit in my place on my throne.’” 31 Bathsheba bowed down to the king with her face to the floor[f] and said, “May my master, King David, live forever!”
32 King David said, “Summon Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet,[g] and Benaiah son of Jehoiada.” They came before the king, 33 and he[h] told them, “Take your master’s[i] servants with you, put my son Solomon on my mule, and lead him down to Gihon.[j] 34 There Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet will anoint[k] him king over Israel; then blow the trumpet and declare, ‘Long live King Solomon!’ 35 Then follow him up as he comes and sits on my throne. He will be king in my place; I have decreed[l] that he will be ruler over Israel and Judah.” 36 Benaiah son of Jehoiada responded[m] to the king: “So be it![n] May the Lord God of my master the king confirm it![o] 37 As the Lord is with my master the king, so may he be with Solomon, and may he make him an even greater king than my master King David!”[p]
38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites, and the Pelethites[q] went down, put Solomon on King David’s mule, and led him to Gihon. 39 Zadok the priest took a horn filled with olive oil[r] from the tent and poured it on[s] Solomon; the trumpet was blown and all the people declared, “Long live King Solomon!” 40 All the people followed him up, playing flutes and celebrating so loudly they made the ground shake.[t]
41 Now Adonijah and all his guests heard the commotion just as they had finished eating.[u] When Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he asked, “Why is there such a noisy commotion in the city?”[v] 42 As he was still speaking, Jonathan[w] son of Abiathar the priest arrived. Adonijah said, “Come in, for[x] an important man like you must be bringing good news.”[y] 43 Jonathan replied[z] to Adonijah: “No![aa] Our master[ab] King David has made Solomon king. 44 The king sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites, and the Pelethites and they put him on the king’s mule. 45 Then Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anointed[ac] him king in Gihon. They went up from there rejoicing, and the city is in an uproar. That is the sound you hear. 46 Furthermore, Solomon has assumed the royal throne.[ad] 47 The king’s servants have even come to congratulate[ae] our master[af] King David, saying, ‘May your God[ag] make Solomon more famous than you and make him an even greater king than you!’[ah] Then the king leaned[ai] on the bed 48 and said[aj] this: ‘The Lord God of Israel is worthy of praise because[ak] today he has placed a successor on my throne and allowed me to see it.’”[al]
17 Now I urge you, brothers and sisters,[a] to watch out for those who create dissensions and obstacles contrary to the teaching that you learned. Avoid them! 18 For these are the kind who do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By their smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds[b] of the naive. 19 Your obedience is known to all and thus I rejoice over you. But I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil. 20 The God of peace will quickly crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.
