Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 126[a]
A song of ascents.[b]
126 When the Lord restored the well-being of Zion,[c]
we thought we were dreaming.[d]
2 At that time we laughed loudly
and shouted for joy.[e]
At that time the nations said,[f]
“The Lord has accomplished great things for these people.”
3 The Lord did indeed accomplish great things for us.
We were happy.
4 O Lord, restore our well-being,
just as the streams in the arid south are replenished.[g]
5 Those who shed tears as they plant
will shout for joy when they reap the harvest.[h]
6 The one who weeps as he walks along, carrying his bag[i] of seed,
will certainly come in with a shout of joy, carrying his sheaves of grain.[j]
13 You march out to deliver your people,
to deliver your special servant.[a]
You strike the leader of the wicked nation,[b]
laying him open from the lower body to the neck.[c] Selah.
14 You pierce the heads of his warriors[d] with a spear.[e]
They storm forward to scatter us;[f]
they shout with joy as if they were plundering the poor with no opposition.[g]
15 But you trample on the sea with your horses,
on the surging, raging waters.[h]
Habakkuk Declares His Confidence
16 I listened and my stomach churned;[i]
the sound made my lips quiver.
My frame went limp, as if my bones were decaying,[j]
and I shook as I tried to walk.[k]
I long[l] for the day of distress
to come upon[m] the people who attack us.
17 When[n] the fig tree does not bud,
and there are no grapes on the vines;
when the olive trees do not produce[o]
and the fields yield no crops;[p]
when the sheep disappear[q] from the pen
and there are no cattle in the stalls—
18 I will rejoice because of[r] the Lord;
I will be happy because of the God who delivers me!
19 The Sovereign Lord is my source of strength.[s]
He gives me the agility of a deer;[t]
he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain.[u]
(This prayer is for the song leader. It is to be accompanied by stringed instruments.)[v]
The Parable of the Two Sons
28 “What[a] do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ 29 The boy answered,[b] ‘I will not.’ But later he had a change of heart[c] and went. 30 The father[d] went to the other son and said the same thing. This boy answered,[e] ‘I will, sir,’ but did not go. 31 Which of the two did his father’s will?” They said, “The first.”[f] Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth,[g] tax collectors[h] and prostitutes will go ahead of you into the kingdom of God! 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him. But the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe. Although[i] you saw this, you did not later change your minds[j] and believe him.
