Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 76[a]
For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a psalm of Asaph, a song.
76 God has revealed himself in Judah;[b]
in Israel his reputation[c] is great.
2 He lives in Salem;[d]
he dwells in Zion.[e]
3 There he shattered the arrows,[f]
the shield, the sword, and the rest of the weapons of war.[g] (Selah)
4 You shine brightly and reveal your majesty,
as you descend from the hills where you killed your prey.[h]
5 The bravehearted[i] were plundered;[j]
they “fell asleep.”[k]
All the warriors were helpless.[l]
6 At the sound of your battle cry,[m] O God of Jacob,
both rider[n] and horse “fell asleep.”[o]
7 You are awesome! Yes, you!
Who can withstand your intense anger?[p]
8 From heaven you announced what their punishment would be.[q]
The earth[r] was afraid and silent
9 when God arose to execute judgment,
and to deliver all the oppressed of the earth. (Selah)
10 Certainly[s] your angry judgment upon men will bring you praise;[t]
you reveal your anger in full measure.[u]
11 Make vows to the Lord your God and repay them.
Let all those who surround him[v] bring tribute to the awesome one.
12 He humbles princes;[w]
the kings of the earth regard him as awesome.[x]
14 When you see this, you will be happy,[a]
and you will be revived.[b]
The Lord will reveal his power to his servants
and his anger to his enemies.[c]
15 For look, the Lord comes with fire,
his chariots come like a windstorm,[d]
to reveal his raging anger,
his battle cry, and his flaming arrows.[e]
16 For the Lord judges all humanity[f]
with fire and his sword;
the Lord will kill many.[g]
17 “As for those who consecrate and ritually purify themselves so they can follow their leader and worship in the sacred orchards,[h] those who eat the flesh of pigs and other disgusting creatures, like mice[i]—they will all be destroyed together,”[j] says the Lord. 18 “I hate their deeds and thoughts! So I am coming[k] to gather all the nations and ethnic groups;[l] they will come and witness my splendor. 19 I will perform a mighty act among them[m] and then send some of those who remain to the nations—to Tarshish, Pul,[n] Lud[o] (known for its archers[p]), Tubal, Javan,[q] and to the distant coastlands[r] that have not heard about me or seen my splendor. They will tell the nations of my splendor. 20 They will bring back all your countrymen[s] from all the nations as an offering to the Lord. They will bring them[t] on horses, in chariots, in wagons, on mules, and on camels[u] to my holy hill Jerusalem,” says the Lord, “just as the Israelites bring offerings to the Lord’s temple in ritually pure containers. 21 And I will choose some of them as priests and Levites,” says the Lord. 22 “For just as the new heavens and the new earth I am about to make will remain standing before me,” says the Lord, “so your descendants and your name will remain. 23 From one month[v] to the next and from one Sabbath to the next, all people[w] will come to worship me,”[x] says the Lord. 24 “They will go out and observe the corpses of those who rebelled against me, for the maggots that eat them will not die,[y] and the fire that consumes them will not die out.[z] All people will find the sight abhorrent.”[aa]
Judgment on Israel
37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem,[a] you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you![b] How often I have longed[c] to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but[d] you would have none of it![e] 38 Look, your house is left to you desolate! 39 For I tell you, you will not see me from now until you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!’”[f]
The Destruction of the Temple
24 Now[g] as Jesus was going out of the temple courts and walking away, his disciples came to show him the temple buildings.[h] 2 And he said to them,[i] “Do you see all these things? I tell you the truth,[j] not one stone will be left on another.[k] All will be torn down!”[l]
Signs of the End of the Age
3 As[m] he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, his disciples came to him privately and said, “Tell us, when will these things[n] happen? And what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” 4 Jesus answered them,[o] “Watch out[p] that no one misleads you. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’[q] and they will mislead many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. Make sure that you are not alarmed, for this must happen, but the end is still to come.[r] 7 For nation will rise up in arms[s] against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines and earthquakes[t] in various places.[u] 8 All[v] these things are the beginning of birth pains.
Persecution of Disciples
9 “Then they will hand you over to be persecuted and will kill you. You will be hated by all the nations[w] because of my name.[x] 10 Then many will be led into sin,[y] and they will betray one another and hate one another. 11 And many false prophets will appear and deceive[z] many, 12 and because lawlessness will increase so much, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the person who endures to the end will be saved.[aa] 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the whole inhabited earth as a testimony to all the nations,[ab] and then the end will come.
